His sound is like no other period. I must say his solo album Elegant Gypsy is sill one of my favorite fusion albums of all times for me. Still sounds amazing after all those years!
Return to Forever (Chick + Stanley + Al + Lenny) was THE most important fusion-jazz fusion band EVER. Genius Chick "created the sound", (Stanley's words). The rest is history. Al's guitar was the powerhouse for that amazing sound! Bravo Al!
Great show! Al and his band at their very best! One of my all time favorite tunes is "One Night Last June" - and how Gumbi joins Al's solo ( 1:06:28 ) with his triangle is epic! Thanks for sharing!
Can't even describe my joy....this man has given me the best years of my life... through his music....it's gotten me through too many things in life....bless this guy ..❤️
Al Di Meola is one of the very best guitarists. We're lucky to have him. I've only seen him play live once, back in '87 (or early '88?) in a now defunct Toronto club called The Diamond. After his incredible show, and after his band had already left the stage, he slowly walked up to the front of the stage and just really casually said hello to whoever wanted to chat with him. I was 18 at the time, went to the show by myself, and he was/is one the very best (as we all know). There were just a few people milling about at the front so I walked up and said hello and thank you for the wonderful music and he reached out and shook my hand. Al has a good soul and a good heart.
I see the show of The Al Di Meola Project at the Barrymorres in Ottawa on Bank Street in 1988 for the album Tiramisu. One of the most fantastic show in my life. I can remember the midi effects on the sound of is guitar. I'm happy, I'll see him another time at the jazz festival in Ottawa in june 26 2024. I just can't wait ! Thanks Al for the great music, your modesty and simplicity !
Wow…!!! I can’t believe it…!!!! One of the greatest guitar players of all time…!!!! Grew up listening to his albums in the early to mid seventies…!!! Simply wonderful…!!!!!
I have listened to allot of his music in my life. he deserves such a bigger audience than playing at a winery. but I would've loved to of seen him play in a small place like this.
I first heard Al when a friend of mine, a drummer, made a cassette copy of Casino, telling me I needed to hear this. The drummer, Steve Gadd is amazing. So I listened to almost the whole album totally digging on the drumming before it clicked in my head that hey, this guitarist is pretty good. Lol
Al i Meola ......You are the best and I wish you a speedy recovery thank you for all of the incredible musical contributions and to the band for this excellent show!
Oh man, neign a fan since the beginning with RTF and ever since, I would kill to be able to see this tour as Al's music was such a big part of my life! Wishing All all the best for his continuing recovery.
I had the honor to meet him in person when he came with his group to play at Blues Alley in DC. So himble and do genius at the same time. Fantastic show. Will never forget that. Now waiting until Friday to see him at the Birchmere. Can’t wait!
Just to follow-up. Saw Al and the band at Birchmere. Great show, did not disappoint in anything. The other musicians were fantastic, the percussionist brilliant. Another great night!

Saw Al in 1978 on his Elegant Gypsy tour at Southern Illinois University...WoW wow wow for the last 46 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
C. '76, we stood next to a tiny 2' high stage in a tiny packed Santa Cruz bar, Margarita's, for RTF. We got the weekday gigs between S.F. and L.A. They played a solid >2-hr. set and clearly dug it. That venue was an amazing venue...and then we spilled out into the chill, foggy sea air. Amazing times never to be repeated...
Bummed he did not play the full set like previous nights on this tour but still always a treat to see Big Al! Spoke with crew afterwards and they said he was not feeling well so cut the set short. Still recovering from heart attack. Prayers Al feels better moving forward.
well this is rather good isn't it-great to see the early albums getting an airing and some RTF stuff.I read he had a heart attack back in September so he's obviously made a good recovery.Come over to the UK with an electric band Al-please!!!
Practice Practice Practice,!!! AL, no it was the Acid!! I nearly fell off my chair laughing. Such a talent we rarely see anymore & those guys with him are on it big time & for a guy that has not played some of these old RTF songs he & they soar through them & they are as close to as exciting as thety were when Al was with Chick. Saw them twice once at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC in 74 when Al was like 18 or 19 years old & Billy Conner had split. & once at MDs Capitol Center with Santana & Buddy Miles. The mans a legend with fingers as fast as light speed. He can still make that ole Les Paul wail!!!
I can remember buying the original vinyl albums as they were released in the 70's, Land of the Midnight Sun, Elegant Gypsy and Casino in a tiny hole-in-the-wall music store in Plymouth UK ...Richard Branson's second store and before anyone had heard of him.
I remember when my music teacher played me the live record live in san francisco it blew me away i was in trance this music was more than heavy metal awesome guitar chops perfect harmony rock on forever maestro
"Casino" the best song of the all. The OG Al DiMeola tune. Still the wide open 100 WATT Marshall would have Done it the Justice. Maybe two Marshall 800 50 Watt in STEREO. Amazing he didn't play this live more often. His original band I am missing too. 1980 Santa Barbara Bowl. And the next night The Greek Theatre, Berkeley, CA. Two nights back to back. Carlos Santana shared both gigs. Santana overnight totally absorbed Every palm muted modal scale Al ever played. Seeing Al's eyes big as saucers watching Carlos blaze note for note with Al in the encore ???!!!!....AMAZING!!!!! Like two Bull fighters with Electric guitars..¡!!!?..?...!!!!???? I am for sure that the music fusion world is very happy to know Al is back playing incredible music again. The band is tight and the grooves are infectious. Thanks Al
Amazing! Al and the band sound incredible! The Wizard is one of my favorite songs and it is great to be able to watch a live performance of it. Thank you. Al is one of the greatest musical talents ever!
50 years ago I listened to an FM radio 📻 ad for Chick Coreas "Return To Forever" at the Paramount theater in Seattle and heard Jazz Fusion for the 1st time! This video is a gift still giving! Thanks Hippo 🦛 😁!
I've seen Al Di Meola twice. The first time was 1978 following the release of 'Casino' in Tucson, AZ. Absolutely amazing! Interestingly enough he opened for the fantastic band, Renaissance! Crazy pairing! Lol! As much as I love Renaissance, after Al opened the show, it was almost anticlimactic when Annie & the band took the stage.
Wow! 🤩That percussionist rocked my day (if not the week!) starting solo at 1:40:00! Every band-member incredible! Brilliant guitar sound, too! =)👌😃👍 Thank you very much for filming this!
