I guess he doesn't wear those gloves and water-proof overalls for nothing! =3 As for why he doesn't get a cold... I'd say his thick moustache keeps his mouth warm enough. If you want to start questioning Nintendo logic, here are some more mind-benders:
1 - Why doesn't Mario's hat float away when he's in the water?
2 - Why doesn't Mario's hat fall off when he does the spin jump while he's invincible?
3 - How big can Mario's wallet possibly be to collect all those coins?
4 - How can Mario hold his breath underwater forever?
5 - How can Mario throw fireballs underwater?
The list goes on... ;)

Good points! XD And indeed you are correct, as we ARE questioning a game where a fat man can jump like 8 feet in the air, turtles and raccoons can fly, fungi can speak intelligently, flowers that can somehow generate enough heat to melt ice, mushrooms that can double your height, and tyrannical turtle kings can breathe fire. Wow.
