I have to disagree, it also depends on which monitor you are watching the resulting photos. I use a calibrated monitor with 10 bit colors and Xperia looks more unnatural to me. It has much worse color recording. For accurate comparison we need calibration test (take a color spectrum for which all values are known and then measure them) Natural colors are somewhere between the two compared devices, but the Pixel is a little closer to reality.
The xperia has a larger sensor on each lens. 1/1.7" 24 mm, 1/2.55" 16 mm and 1/3.4" 70 mm versus the pixel's 1/2.55" wide and 1/3.6" telephoto. This means that in capable hands the xperia' s images will be better. A larger sensor means more information that results in better detail, better dynamic range when getting detail back in editing RAW images, higher light sensitivity and shallower depth of field. On the other hand Google's software does any post editing you would make with the xperia in camera for you.
@@bjure8111 my xperia 1 does have raw support for the main sensor just not in the default app. You need something like adobe lightroom to take advantage of that. As for the mk II they said the photo pro app would recieve an update to support raw (probably only for the main sensor as well) and a night mode.
This was good. Honest review, you came straight off and stated what you did and what your personal preference was. Most don't do that and state their preference as fact
I am totally surprised, I seriously thought that the Pixel 4 was going to run away with these photos, but the Sony was right there with it producing some amazing shots as well, I also like the videos from the Sony Xperia 1 Mii much better than the Pixel 4 XL. The pixel 4 XL is good and like it a lot, but I really need to get myself an Xperia 1 Mii.
So, I've owned numerous Sony smartphones and I have both Pixel 3 and 4 XL. My reason for deciding to stay with the Pixel 4 XL? When I point and shoot, the images reflect the colours I see. It seems to capture the absolute perfect reflection of reality. I own a Canon G1 X mk II and have also tried Motorola and Nokia. I love photography and your photos, thanks soo much for this and your Low Light review of these same champions, prove to me my smartphone choice is the Pixel 4 Xl. I viewed your images on a 55 inch Sony Bravia TV and paused each, 'side-by-side', perusing in-depth and for me Pixel 4 Xl won all but two (both videos, this one and your Low Light) comparisons (more than an hour's viewing). The two comparisons it didn't win were dead heats. Thanks again for proving to me, Pixel 4 XL is still the undefeated champion. Btw, why do I want to see reality in my images as opposed to "bluer skies"? The future. Photography is all about looking back.
@@gopanski5330, you own the phone, too? Yeahh, I bet you do. You probably aren't and just a bit delusional. I've literally just taken a selfie and it turned out great. I can even see the pores in my skin. The people slandering the front camera are full of BS.
Some Pixel images look oversharpened and maybe oversaturated. Would rather have control over it as in Xperia image. Background blur in Xperia is superior too.
Background blur on Sony Xperia is what you expect from a small sensor camera with a relatively small aperture relative to dslr or mirrorless in a given depth of field. They don't do Apple or Google AI bokeh/background blurring tricks.
Based on what I'm seeing is that the both phones have great cameras... The Sony has a more natural look to it. The pixel looks like it's had enhancements done to it. Both are solid option but all in on the Sony though and especially the 70mm tele lens it's just the right amount of zoom it seems
Agreed, I thought both did well and it does come down to which approach to camera and image processing you prefer. Thanks for watching and leaving your thoughts.
I think Sony's colours are nicer. They really need to tune up that video software, it is terrible like a placeholder at the moment imo. The Pixel has better computational processing for certain scenes, but other times it just looks off compared to the Sony photos.
Great comparisons/photo selection ! For me the xperia 1ii seemed to edge ahead at 2:24 by retaining that strong purple hue of the flower whereas the pixel one went a bit yellow/purple. + xperia shot looked more natural at 2:53 whereas grass looked over sharpened on pixel as it did on the dog fur too later on. Thnks also for your insights on the usability of these cameras too + yes see what you mean about the blue hues too - had not noticed that !
@@GrantLikesTech You are most welcome Grant and this was such a good camera review. Would be fab if you were planning a similar one for the upcoming Samsung note 20 ultra too...
The camera is debatable but everything else is better on the Sony Xperia 1 ii, the display, battery, video recording, performance and speakers. Pixel is a great camera phone but that's it. Sony is more than just a camera, it's an entertainment product.
true, I'm enjoying the overall experience. The fingerprint sensor isn't the greatest, no face unlock option and the display needs to be brighter outdoors.
For me, its hard to compare between x1m2 with other phone(photo/vid) when sony has the special apps. If there is a smartphone who has the same ability like sony is, then i think why not..when people see sony auto camera is mehh, while the other looked super, they forgot this sony can do better with photo pro/cinematic pro, which has auto/manual like sony alpha.. So how can they compare.. But this still look nice tho both looks great
My personal preference is the Pixel. But the Sony images are nice as well, a little bit of work in post could make the images equivalent. Thanks for the coverage on the cameras Grant. Can't wait for the low light comparison.
I was going back and forth with these phones I thought they both did a nice job! Video portion I like Sony, it seems to lean more to the cooler side in its color reproduction. Great Job!
Nice video!! I think pixel camera its still the King for me, natural colors with good contrast. But about video, I dont get why people say pixel video is bad. Maybe its not the Best, but i think is vety good for a 2019 phone, good stabilization, fast and accurate auto focus, nice detail...
Thanks! Pixel video has improved to the point where saying it's bad is just a poor stereotype at this point for those who haven't bothered to revisit it.
wow, that's the best cam vs cam review i've ever seen! very nice thx!! 👍 i had the pixel 4xl and now the Sony Xperia 1 II, but i go with Sony. The natural look in combination with the pro app and the really nice screen is for me my dream. But i am also a big pixel bliever, i loved the pixel 4xl.
Outstanding comparison! I share your thoughts with regards to the aggressive bokeh on the Sony. I was thinking to myself that portrait shots probably should be done in the pro app with regards to the 1 ii. But I carry two phones and would be satisfied with a point and shoot pixel and a pro mode Sony. Thanks for the video Grant, it's obvious that it was a lot of work!
I am impressed with Sony and I think they have a strategy in mind with their flagships but I think it depends on the sales. The point and shoot camera is very good and it can be compared with the best out there. The manual mode is something very special not only in quality but 8t gives the possibility to learn the basics in photography. The simplicity and the bare bones of the UI, the night mode where I don't see that they can improve as much as the competition, the slow charging rate can be a problem in the sales. The superb camera, the display, the battery protection and the jack(witch can't be compared with Lg and HTC DAC) and the surprisingly good battery life can help the sales. This will be my next phone.
I really appreciate you putting this comparison together. I absolutely love pixel phones, as I have the original pixel XL and looking to upgrade. Sony's xperia 1 ii has so many features and hardware that I love [yes, including headphone jack], but I do admire Pixel's computational algorithms for picture taking. I was hoping Pixel would eventually bring back the headphone jack. For point and shoot, hands down Pixel because they know how to make pictures look out of this world. Sony's full manual control for a picture using the Pro app and Video control for the Pro Cinema make it very desirable. What to do...what to do....they need to make a Sony Pixel, lol
Lol, thanks. Always tough to decide on convenience vs. flexibility. I rather take convenience in a phone camera and have an actual camera on hand when I want more.
@@GrantLikesTech As much as I wanted the Xperia I ii to win, I have to agree Pixel 4 XL for point and shoot greatness. I feel I will miss too many shots of my kids with the Xperia 1 ii
Hey Grant. People have been giving the pixel grief for not having 4k at 60. Personally I use 1080 at 60 for my s20 ultra and I am fine with it. I am not a blogger and just take videos on occasion for fun. But do you see a big difference when using 1080 and 4k? Personally I don't see a need for 4k when it is barely noticeable to my eyes. I just think the video for the pixel 4xl is just good enough.
Depends on what you're using the video for. On smaller displays most won't see much of a difference. Sometimes the colors are actually different between 4k and 1080p once you take them off the phone.
This is why I tend to prefer your photo and videos comparisons. I'm sure the Sony has way more features inside it, but in normal point and shoot, I thought the Pixel won almost everything except portraits. I wasn't that crazy about the portrait shots on the Pixel though. Thought it failed to blur the background too much, and the blue sky in the one Pixel shot looked almost like a navy color to me. I preferred the portrait shots on the Sony. Wasn't as detailed as the Pixel, but I felt the Pixel shots looked too dark at times when the lighting appeared to be lower. Sony still struggling overall in the camera department to me though.
Thanks Artdog, always appreciate your support. I find the Xperia blows out the background with the front camera into any light, but I can see how you don't prefer the Pixel as it has always been "darker" with more contrast that isn't for everyone.
Natural vs over processed, same way Photoshops can make the regular pictures look dull.. pixel photos look better but the xperia videos look better...pixel videos are still behind the competition
Nice I know how hard these are to do you did an AWESOME job and we appreciate your work on this one! I like the video better on the Pixel and the still shots on the Xperia does that make me weird?
I prefer the softer bokeh on the Sony compared to the Pixel. Maybe that's due to the sensor size. In videos though, I had expected Sony to win. But the Pixel was right up there, and even bested it in quality a few times. I'd go with Sony though as I like shooting manual.
Into video: I like the colors a little better (more HDR, though less natural than Sony) in the 4XL. Audio is far better in the Sony, as well as the details/sharpness. Sony 1 - 0 Pixel. 2.35min in , horrendous bokeh on Sony's capture. 4.50, your Portait is far more detailed and vibrant on the Pixel.Hat details ? Selfie images on Pixel are in mirror mode ? Did you do it (mirroring) for the video or was it straight from the device ? Selfie cam video on Sony blows out the whites, apart from not having enough details. As an audiophile, Sound capture seems atrocious on the Pixel, For this whole reason, I would not get it. Enough commenting. Initial thoughts on current firmware ? Neither of the phones is satisfactory to make me get a new device. Changes have been incremental over the last years, so I am hopeful that with patience, next year we may see some worthwhile improvements. Thank you, Grant.
Too unfair, Sony doesn't use aggressive HDR processing in the standard camera app. Besides, there's a full Auto Mode on Photo Pro app as well, and that one brings an Auto HDR mode that delivers exactly what the Pixel 4 can bring and then some more. Either way, I don't think everyone will be sticking to just purely the standard camera app alone for taking photos, because a real smart user will find his/her own way to solve his/her problems, especially with this camera setup, and for that, Sony has the option for both natural and untouched images, as well as to overprocessed ones (by having GCAM as well), while the Pixel is only limited to Google's style of overprocessing, which can be good for those that don't care or have entirely no idea about pro photography, but not a good choice to those who are willing to learn about it or want to mess with things for a little while. Right now I'm using a Redmi budget phone, and while I prefer the superior camera hardware on this thing, I definitely do miss the full manual controls on my old Asus Zenfone device, where I can control everything from the camera and produce remarkably better photos than even my current phone can do. So yes, the winner here is the Sony for the greater amount of options that a person can do with it. The hardware is also much more advanced, and there's the presence of an ultrawide camera, which no software processing could ever replicate. Add the crazy fast burst shots with continuously working AF and AE, and the 1 II goes up to be some serious contender for smartphone camera of the year.
How is this unfair? I used the Photo Pro app with auto HDR. I also explain the differences in approaches Sony and Google take with similar information you describe here. I may prefer the Pixel for day to day use, but that doesn't make me wrong as that's my preference. Just like you're not wrong for preferring the Xperia.
What, I thought you said you used them both on their standard camera apps, and left everything as they are. I have nothing against what you said about preference, but this one certainly felt a little bit leaning towards the Pixel as it is programmed to be performing lots of processing in the background, and would've been better if they were also tested in their manual modes to truly test the pure hardware quality of their cameras, but we know it's impossible to do it with the Pixel, so again, Xperia wins here for its broader range of capabilities. Like I've said, there's already the presence of GCAM that, when used on the Xperia, can deliver results almost entirely similar, or even better than the Pixel phones, but the same laid back image processing on the Xperia simply can't be had on the Pixel. Again, I know preferences, but flexibility is what we're talking about, and the presence of the ultra wide camera on the Sony alone makes it the winner. Anyway, you did a great job explaining things, so props to that.
Excellent comparisons there. Sony can produce photos as good as Google Pixel but their approaches becomes readily apparent from 4:27 - 4:33 with bokeh reproduction. Sony will give you full control over your images - this is what the Photopro and Cinemapro apps are for with very little in-camera image processing on default. Just like how dslr cameras work, those overblown highlights can be underexposed a bit using Sony's extensive controls (either by sliding exposure value to negative or increasing shutter speeds) - you can put your trust on Sony sensors to capture details on dark areas and brighten them later on edit. If the Pixel is automatic transmission, Xperia 1 II is the stick shift.
Hello there! Thank you for comparison! Which phone has more natural colors and lighting? EDIT: also, Grant, you can have 4k60, but only in CinemaPro app.
Generally the Sony will be more neutral in color, but it can be too aggressive with the blue skies. I managed to find the 4k 60fps option while doing my camera test video, but it really needs to be in the stock camera app too.
Excellent jobe Grant! As someone who would never buy any of those 2, I must say both did well. And that is expected. But phone isn't just the camera. One has too high pixel density but dim screen, the other is too experimental and hardware wise weird, and both could use some more juice in battery capacity. None has LG lvl of 3.5. or even better, why not. If they both corrected their flaws, my choice would be Pixel. I'm not manual mode guy:)
Thanks Goran! It is a shame that Sony also doesn't put more effort into their audio given their audio prowess. I'm glad they brought back the 3.5mm port, but it's not close to the LG audio quality.
I thought the Xperia 1ii is all hype but it turns out the camera is really really good. Not much camera can be significantly better then pixel. Usually Pixel is the one that looks better and more natural then others but here the xperia 1ii clearly is more natural and not over processed. The bokeh is very smooth and not as busy as the pixel too. The color and sound of the video is a clear in for xperia 1ii. I'm really surprised. If only Sony comes out with this kind of quality sooner.
You said the Pixel 4 has more natural background blur, and that's simply not true. Both were natural bokeh from the cameras, and the larger optics and sensor on the Sony definitely gives off that more shallow depth of field. Pixel 4's natural DoF is just about as good as can be expected from a typical smartphone camera, while the Xperia 1 II's is ahead, that it could even be mistaken for a DSLR or mirrorless camera.
Sure it's true. I don't see how a preference or opinion can be wrong. A shallower depth of field doesn't necessarily make one better,. especially when it's all one blurry mess. It may look nice, but layering the blur based on the distance of the background objects seems nicer to my eye.
Well that's certainly the main point of the shallow depth of field, so that the viewers' eyes are focused on the main subject that's in focus and not get distracted by anything in the background. Perhaps you could've moved back a bit further so that the effect wasn't as dramatic.
I preffered just about every still image from the Sony. The Pixel images all looked over-processed, to my eye. Colours often looked dialed up, especially in the sky (when it wasn't blown out) and it was too contrasty and over-sharp. It looked like a smartphone trying hard whereas the Sony looked like a camera. The Xperia had a natural, understated, accurate look.
you have to put in mind that the Pixel is 1 year old , with tons of updates and improvements , while Sony is just few weeks old , so there will be definitely some improvements
Pretty sure I mentioned in the video. Photo Pro used for photos. Cinema Pro is only 21:9 and requires color grading. Have some samples of it in my Xperia 1 ii camera test video.
Not a fan of this computational thing, too overprocessed sometimes and a bit unnatural. The Auto mode of the Photo Pro does better in my opinion. And pretty surprised by some pictures, they look really good. Since last year I think, you can confidently trust the Sony processing and it does a good job. And given the Auto mode, I'd always shoot with photo Pro.
Well, I'd say stab was on par. Indeed there is something wrong with focus, but portraits it's a matter of taste in my opinion. But in terms of colors and details Sony is better (don't confuse details with oversharpening that Pixel does). And what about HDR?
Pixel is switching lenses during recording and by default it uses HDR in video so sony was at a disadvantage, the focal length change is really obvious at 9:26
Oversharpning sometimes make the photo look bad But imagine sony hardware + pixel software The audio on pixel is great on videos Sony can do 60fps 4k in cinema pro app Sony did a great job this year compared to older Sony devices, hope they improve the front facing camera in next xperia phone
Thanks, I found the 4k 60fps option while doing my camera test video, but it really needs to be added to the stock camera app. Sony clearly made improvements this year. Hopefully they keep m making improvements to the stock camera app and front camera for the point and shoot crowd. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
Because the X1ii doesn't have the sharpening like other phones it really doesn't look like it's coming from a phone. It looks a lot cleaner like it's coming from a much bigger camera
Thank for compression, Sony bigger sensor give creamy bokeh which normal on pro cam its not software thing i really love my 1 ii amazing phone and battery life
Did you mess around with the basic camera app on the Sony at all? If so, can you tell me what the main differences are between using the basic app in auto mode in the photo pro app in auto mode?
If you're just asking about auto mode, then not much since you're just doing point and shoot with no manual adjustments. If you want to see the difference in photo quality, then I have comparisons in my camera test video: ruclips.net/video/bzTiSqGNGQE/видео.html
Grant S that’s EXACTLY what I was looking for, thank you. Overall, the photo pro app seems to take much better pictures... when HDR kicks in. Would you recommend just leaving HDR on all the time in the photo pro app?
I expected a lot more coming from sony, especially when this phone came out half a year after pixel 4. Was really looking forward to potentially getting mark 1 but now probably not.
zoom in on the crops and then you see the real picture - 9/10 the Sony is superior, I have seen this on other comparisons such as the S20U and IP 11 , if falls short in other areas like HDR and Bokeh but we need to remember that the Sony has just hit the market and a few tweaks will sort it, I agree the standard camera app needs improvement, it' seems they put everything into the pro features and forgot about the quick point and shoot and also the front camera which is horrendous - I expect both these features are being worked on and will be sorted on a future update, all in all I want one.....badly
Im writiting this from my Xperia 1ii and i much prefer the pixel 4 camera overall, And now matter what i do, the videos and sound capturing is Always better on the Pixel. Im returning my experia ro get a new pixel 4 XL
Yeah depends on what you like to see. Pixel is definitely still the point and shoot option for me and the video isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
Both phones capture amazing photos compared to other phones the winner i think will be the one that captures the most realistic images and only the guy who shoot the photos can decide which is more realistic 👍👍👍
Xperia 1 ii stills are better! Audio probably Pixel. I have the Xperia 5 and I find the pictures I take are pretty good, is the mark 2 worth the upgrade? Thanks
"What makes you think the camera from pixels is good?" Is the green or the green faded or the yellowish green.. I don't know why the color is on the pixels. When you take pictures of selfies I'm sorry about earlier whether your face is black.. But why is it so black in your face? Is it because the hdr software is too much.. That's why I always thought pictures using HDR are not all good.. Sorry bad english
The sony wasn't bad at auto at all. just every single reviewer out there might prefer the auto super duper AI enhanced pixel. but definitely it's not bad
Sony's approach is traditional what you see is what you get approach and it doesn't cater to IG crowd. It's creator's device. I will definitely pair this up with snapseed app for my own post processing.
Sony 4k 60 FPS is in the cinema pro mode only. But that mode is best used as a studio shoot, as it won't adapt to light changes once the video starts playing for some reason
I already have a Pixel 4 XL but it has started to act a little buggy recently. It probably only needs a wipe but its actually the touchscreen that seems to go out in the corners/edge of the display. Anyway if I can find a decent deal on the Xperia 1 ii or even 10 iii I think that's what I'll replace my phone with. Sony quality plus it not being made in China (even though I know some parts are sourced from there) is a pretty big deal sealer for me.
Sony portrait mode struggling with trees at the back of your head - it can't tell whether that's hair or not. Pixel portrait shots are too contrasty and sharp but they do give that immediate 'oh wow' moment.
I love the pictures from the mark II's main camera, but when it comes to video and the front facing camera, it was just sad. I don't understand why sony doesn't get those things right.
They didn't bother to update the front camera, but it did better than I expected. Probably since I had such low expectations based on previous experience.
I guess Xperia has very good dynamic range and better natural color, and pixel social media ready with punch of color and contras. 3:42 I prefer Xperia
sony 4k more than Google and 1080 30 But 1080 60 I don't know, telephoto lens google more than mark2 but Main camera sony good different color sony The colors are more real More details of the main camera telephoto lens samsung cmos so bad..
Sony wins big in background defocusing!! that's the kind of the blur you can get from a larger aperture lens. Pixel's bg blur is very unnatural and digital. Sony's coloring is also way more natural!
Holy crap, I have been on the Google line of phones right from the nexus (on a pixel 3 xl now) and I was waiting to see what the pixel 5 delivers before I upgrade but this might be the phone to get in 2020 irrespective of what pixel 5 delivers..
@@GrantLikesTech no I was thinking of getting the 5. I usually upgrade ever 20-24 mons. But I might skip the 5 and get the Sony if they are comparable. I am sure in a couple of months there will be deals on the Xperia and its cost should be comparable to whatever the Pixel 5 might be. I heard they are not going for the highest chip set etc. on the Pixel 5 so cost should be $899~ or so I would imagine.
Lot of sony fanboys lying in this comment section 😂.. Don't cheat your own eyes..Pixel is still king of photography.. This video is better example for it..
Actually, Sony photos are less processed as this is the closest image you can get straight from its sensor. Pixel and others use mostly software based - computational photography to do it for you so that means they are the ones cheating your eyes, not Sony. hahaha
@@BatAskal lol 😂.. then you can buy 2012 smarphone, no computational photography.. so funny fanboys 😂💔.. sony still not better in image processing man.. trust it.. don't cheat your self.. 🤦
@@dellwhite9153 I won't get a 2012 smartphone either. They are too slow on autofocus and the sensors don't have a good dynamic range although I can make the most out of it with the current software we have today especially Snapseed. I can do exposure bracketing for increasing dynamic range and image stacking techniques to remove noise. Sony overexposing subjects? Easy, dial the exposure value to negative and underexpose it. You can recover shadow details on post and even apply sharpening. Sony's sensors are that good capturing lost detail. I would rely on histograms to find out the brightness distribution of the scene and base my exposure dials on that info displayed in Photopro app.
It hasn't been ages when the phone released two weeks ago. Might be ages since they said it, sure, but it makes no sense they would actually make a thing of an update dropping long before release, aka no one would ever know it didn't exist. So in those terms, it hasn't been ages, cuz it can't be.
Sony has more aggressive bokeh.... I think it does similar to the human eye. Pixel made photos that almost made pain on my eyes, because flowers were too sharpened, and it felt like I am drunk. I prefer Sony, but sometimes Pixel did better
Details are really impressive with the Pixel despite the small sensor (1/2.55 inch) BUT it definitely losses when it comes to DOF, something software can't really match. P.S. The audio is really impressive too on the Pixel. The 1 ii though isn't bad. I just hate the portrait mode of Pixel & Iphone. Seriously, am I the only one who thinks it looks like a badly done photoshopped image.
Yeah, the Xperia did pretty well to me. True, the larger sensor clearly delivers a shallower depth of field on the Sony. Thanks for checking it out and leaving your thoughts.
obviously im biased as i have a pixel 4 xl but i found those photos to be better than the xperia everytime so far. Im up to minute 3 of the video so far
Most of the Pixel photos look like garbage once on a large display. The overly sharpened edges really look bad, the overly saturated colors are completely unnatural and fake looking, The Pixel's A.I. computational photography algos produce some of the crappiest photos I've ever seen, they may look OK on a small phone display and or Instagram, but they look terrible on a real display and or a print. I like the direction Sony is going, just do everything in actual hardware optically! No A.I. trickery and nonsense. As a photographer myself, the result coming out of the X1ii is MUCH more usable than the Pixel. Especially if the X1ii produces raws! (when the update is finally released).
As I said, two opposite approaches to cameras so it'll depend on what you want from a phone camera. It totally makes sense for you to gravitate to the Sony.
@@GrantLikesTech I agree about the opposite approaches. But this is why the X1ii cannot be compared to the pixel. It's like comparing a hammer to a drill, different tools for different jobs. I'd argue that the X1ii is more comparable to prosumer grade Sony cameras (A6XX series).
Best way to describe is this is to use the following analogy: (funny considering sony do consoles too) Filthy Console Peasants, akin to phones of Spamsung ,Apple, PIXEL etc just want to point and shoot and have the thinking done for them and handed on a plate via the AI. Then we have the GLORIOUS PC Master Race =Sony Xperia, those who like using a PC, want to use their phone as a TOOL to learn and grow and to utilise the BEST AI on the world.........the Human Imagination and eye. They are the type that knows that their PC inst just for silly games but to create great things from and use for video, editing, overclocking, 3d studio max work etc . Essentially Sony xperia =Glorious PC Master Race=FTW Apple,Pixel, SamDung AI=The Suxxors.
Sony looks so much more natural, which I prefer can't wait to receive my Xperia 1 ii
Hope you enjoy it, Ryan!
I bought one too, this phone just stands out w/ the 4k display, headphone jack, and most importantly, camera quality
I have to disagree, it also depends on which monitor you are watching the resulting photos. I use a calibrated monitor with 10 bit colors and Xperia looks more unnatural to me. It has much worse color recording. For accurate comparison we need calibration test (take a color spectrum for which all values are known and then measure them)
Natural colors are somewhere between the two compared devices, but the Pixel is a little closer to reality.
Pretty much my thoughts I shared at the end of the video on the difference between the two. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts as well.
There is one thing.. The sony doesn't support raw files yet.. Yep you read that right..
@@bjure8111 my xperia 1 does have raw support for the main sensor just not in the default app. You need something like adobe lightroom to take advantage of that. As for the mk II they said the photo pro app would recieve an update to support raw (probably only for the main sensor as well) and a night mode.
Sadly, the Pixel destroyed it here. Almost every photo. The Xperia pictures were too soft. Dynamic range was bad as well.
bjurra raw is supported in all 3 lenses...yep you read that right 😬
This was good. Honest review, you came straight off and stated what you did and what your personal preference was. Most don't do that and state their preference as fact

Wow, thanks for taking the time to analyze in such detail, Gary! Glad you seemed to find the videos useful.
Too much over sharpening on the pixel, however, to think smartphone camera can go that far 😀, sweet.
Ha ha, yes. I can see how the Pixel look isn't for everyone, and it is impressive what these smaller sensors can do these days.
Yes that's true. The only real disadvantage in the Sony phone is the selfie camera
@@gopanski5330, what's wrong with the selfie camera? I own an Xperia 1 II and I've taken great selfies with it!

Agree, and that Pixel's bokeh is so distracting.
Fair enough.
I am subtly addicted to post editing, so, 1 ii for me, although I own a 4xl.
Fair enough.
3:34 - Natural Bokeh due shallow depth of field on the left image.
True, and thanks for the real time comments. 😉
Fair enough. Sony didn't focus on video other than their Cinema Pro, but not everyone wants 21:9 video and have to color grade.
Thanks, appreciate the comment. Well thought out and always good to hear others constructive perspectives.
3:44 - I'm very much surprised to see Pixel 4XL blowing out and whiting sky, compared to better dynamic range at left.
But this still look nice tho both looks great
Thanks, Sony definitely gives you the flexibility with its Pro apps.
In short,
noob know nothing about this 🎶
I'll be waiting for low light comparison ✌️ very nice video just love it. Thanks
Thanks, just dropped the low light video and hope you saw it.
My personal preference is the Pixel. But the Sony images are nice as well, a little bit of work in post could make the images equivalent. Thanks for the coverage on the cameras Grant. Can't wait for the low light comparison.
Thanks Brian. Sony does give you more flexibility for sure.
I was going back and forth with these phones I thought they both did a nice job! Video portion I like Sony, it seems to lean more to the cooler side in its color reproduction. Great Job!
Thanks Robb! Appreciate you stopping by.
exceptional exceptional portrait shot from the xperia, those are the shot which you would expect from a dslr, very natural colour with dslr like blur
Xperia definitely has the shallower depth of field in its main sensor.
No nonsense, amazing camera review yet again with great music too match. Subbed! 🙌
Thanks for the sub!
2:07 - How unnatural is that green colour with boosted and saturated leafs besides & behind the flower. Compare that to previous photo.
Sony much much natural-looking, it is realistic!
Pixel 4 is over vivid, but not hell-like punchy color as Huawei/Samsung /Apple.
i had the pixel 4xl and now the Sony Xperia 1 II, but i go with Sony. The natural look in combination with the pro app and the really nice screen is for me my dream. But i am also a big pixel bliever, i loved the pixel 4xl.
Same here...xperia 1 II is almost stock so its ok for me:)
then you have the best of both! Appreciate the kind words and for taking the time to leave a comment.
It’s so hard to spot a difference both these are so impressive it blows my mind, but I’d go with the Xperia 1 ii
Thanks Barry, appreciate the kind words and for sharing your thoughts on it.
It's not aggressive Bokeh though, it's a much larger sensor leading to a naturally more dynamic Bokeh. I preffered it.
Definitely more to a phone than the cameras. Hope you enjoy it!
Great comparison video. I think the right word for this comparison is between Pixel and Xperia. I mean not with the whole Google and Sony.
Thanks, appreciate that.
Pixel 4xl the best...
@@GrantLikesTech oh ok. Thanks for the feedback
The thing is Sony has better detail and Pixel just overshapens everything.
Nice I know how hard these are to do you did an AWESOME job and we appreciate your work on this one! I like the video better on the Pixel and the still shots on the Xperia does that make me weird?
I totally agree 👍
Lol, no wrong answers here, but some may think you're weird for picking Pixel video since they all say it sucks. 😉
Thanks for checking it out, Kymmi!
Grant S I've always heard it sucks... Never owned one. Call me shocked!
I prefer the softer bokeh on the Sony compared to the Pixel. Maybe that's due to the sensor size. In videos though, I had expected Sony to win. But the Pixel was right up there, and even bested it in quality a few times. I'd go with Sony though as I like shooting manual.
Fair enough. Sony definitely gives you more flexibility and you can probably get more out of it if you know what you're doing.
I know this is an image comparison but I really want to just say how much cleaner and better the audio sounds from the left.
It's a full camera comparison, so it's all fair game.
Thanks JD! Yeah, selfies from the Pixel weren't mirrored. Appreciate your opinions on this one.
Great analogy and I definitely agree there.
Hello there! Thank you for comparison!
Which phone has more natural colors and lighting?
EDIT: also, Grant, you can have 4k60, but only in CinemaPro app.
He said at the end of the video that the colors in Sony were more natural but the blue color of the sky in Pixel 4 was more natural.
@@bendror8302, yeah, my bad. Wrote this comment before video was finished. :)
Generally the Sony will be more neutral in color, but it can be too aggressive with the blue skies. I managed to find the 4k 60fps option while doing my camera test video, but it really needs to be in the stock camera app too.
Pixel King💪😎

@@GrantLikesTech maybe next year:) Sony is slow:)
Yup, I thought both phones did well and it comes down to which approach to the cameras you like more. Thanks for watching and leaving your thoughts.
Grant S Are you a pixel fan?? You're an HDR photo admirer??
Sorry bad english
I preffered just about every still image from the Sony. The Pixel images all looked over-processed, to my eye. Colours often looked dialed up, especially in the sky (when it wasn't blown out) and it was too contrasty and over-sharp. It looked like a smartphone trying hard whereas the Sony looked like a camera.
The Xperia had a natural, understated, accurate look.
you have to put in mind that the Pixel is 1 year old , with tons of updates and improvements , while Sony is just few weeks old , so there will be definitely some improvements
True, but I can only compare them as they are now. I thought the Xperia did really well.
Have you ever tried the photo and Cinema Pro Apps the time you were filming this?
Pretty sure I mentioned in the video. Photo Pro used for photos. Cinema Pro is only 21:9 and requires color grading. Have some samples of it in my Xperia 1 ii camera test video.
Not a fan of this computational thing, too overprocessed sometimes and a bit unnatural.
The Auto mode of the Photo Pro does better in my opinion. And pretty surprised by some pictures, they look really good. Since last year I think, you can confidently trust the Sony processing and it does a good job. And given the Auto mode, I'd always shoot with photo Pro.
Fair enough. Pixel image processing isn't for everyone.
That moment when you realise the the Pixel uses more SONY sensors than the SONY phone
🤯🤯🤯
SUPER CORRECT KAPIL!!!
sony is by far better on photos , its more natural and camera like , pixel is the type of pictures i hate , smartphone overprocessing photos .
Lol, OK fair enough. Definitely different approaches so I'd expect most people to like one or the other. Thanks for checking it out!
The pixel won hands down. The xperia fell down where focus, portrait, stabilization & HDR is concerned.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Andrew.
Well, I'd say stab was on par. Indeed there is something wrong with focus, but portraits it's a matter of taste in my opinion. But in terms of colors and details Sony is better (don't confuse details with oversharpening that Pixel does).
And what about HDR?
Pixel is switching lenses during recording and by default it uses HDR in video so sony was at a disadvantage, the focal length change is really obvious at 9:26
Did you test the sony as point and shoot or did you go into settings ?
Pretty sure I explained in the video.
I was waiting for it man
Thanks for being patient.
Good job on the video. Thank you. I will have to go for the Sony, as it will give me more control.
Thanks, fair enough. Sony definitely gives you more flexibility.
Oversharpning sometimes make the photo look bad
But imagine sony hardware + pixel software
The audio on pixel is great on videos
Sony can do 60fps 4k in cinema pro app
Sony did a great job this year compared to older Sony devices, hope they improve the front facing camera in next xperia phone
Cool, respect the opinion

Nice comparison as usual
Thanks! 👍
I think 4k 60fps in Sony can be found only in the cinema pro app not in the native camera app
Thanks, yes, found it while doing my previous camera test video. Should be in the stock app too.
@@GrantLikesTech yes it's good to have on both app tho
Yes, their clear focus is on the Pro app experience. I hope they do improve the stock app and other features, but not counting on it.
Are the Xperia photos taken with Photo Pro app or with the normal camera app?
Photo pro as mentioned in the video.
Im writiting this from my Xperia 1ii and i much prefer the pixel 4 camera overall, And now matter what i do, the videos and sound capturing is Always better on the Pixel. Im returning my experia ro get a new pixel 4 XL

@TrolleLOL I don't believe your bullsh&t story! 😒
I guess I'll take Pixel. Selfie camera is very important to me, and I don't like selfies taken with Mark 2
Definitely don't go with Sony for selfie cameras. They haven't updated them in years.
Both phones capture amazing photos compared to other phones the winner i think will be the one that captures the most realistic images and only the guy who shoot the photos can decide which is more realistic 👍👍👍
Right, can't go wrong with either.
Xperia 1 ii stills are better! Audio probably Pixel. I have the Xperia 5 and I find the pictures I take are pretty good, is the mark 2 worth the upgrade? Thanks
It's definitely an upgrade from the Xperia 5.

Because we all see things differently and I tend to like the Pixel images. there's no right or wrong, only what you like.
The sony wasn't bad at auto at all. just every single reviewer out there might prefer the auto super duper AI enhanced pixel. but definitely it's not bad
I would pick Sony any day overy Pixel. More natural colors overall and better details (don't confuse detail with oversharpening that Pixel does).
@@peterdurum434 I myself prefer the sony. It's acting like a real camera.

totally agree
Im surprised how the portrait mode on your unit works well. Most reviewer's I've seen complains on the edge detection being horrible.
Portrait is adjustable, so the wider you set the aperture the worse the edges get.
Sometimes they rush the pictures and sometimes they do it on purpose to make Sony look bad.
@@The-Heart-Will-Testify that's so true, my friend. I've seen so many examples from the likes of SamsungSaf.
Sony 4k 60 FPS is in the cinema pro mode only. But that mode is best used as a studio shoot, as it won't adapt to light changes once the video starts playing for some reason
Thanks, I did find it when doing my camera test video. It really needs to be in the stock camera app.
Great comparison! Very close fight. Sony improved a lot but long term i will chose Google pixel any time of the day! 📸
Sony has that cleaner look but it's not as fine detailed as Pixel. Overall difference is quite subtle unless peeping both of them side by side.
Any chance we can get the RAW files to play with?
Yes, Sony isn't competing with the Pixel portrait mode but that isn't really their focus either unfortunately.
Most definitely go for the Sony.
Cool 👍
I love the pictures from the mark II's main camera, but when it comes to video and the front facing camera, it was just sad. I don't understand why sony doesn't get those things right.
They didn't bother to update the front camera, but it did better than I expected. Probably since I had such low expectations based on previous experience.
I guess Xperia has very good dynamic range and better natural color, and pixel social media ready with punch of color and contras. 3:42 I prefer Xperia
Glad you like the Xperia. I feel dynamic range is better on the Pixel and Sony's image processing doesn't like to be as aggressive with dynamic range.
sony 4k more than Google and 1080 30
But 1080 60 I don't know, telephoto lens google more than mark2 but Main camera sony good different color sony The colors are more real More details of the main camera telephoto lens samsung cmos so bad..
Pixel HDR and sharpening are better..
But Xperia color space was stunning
Sony wins big in background defocusing!! that's the kind of the blur you can get from a larger aperture lens. Pixel's bg blur is very unnatural and digital. Sony's coloring is also way more natural!
True that
as a Pixel 4 Xl owner i have to say... hopfully my Xperia 1 II will arrive soon!
Hope you enjoy it
Holy crap, I have been on the Google line of phones right from the nexus (on a pixel 3 xl now) and I was waiting to see what the pixel 5 delivers before I upgrade but this might be the phone to get in 2020 irrespective of what pixel 5 delivers..
You thinking of getting a Pixel 4? There's some nice deals now if you are. Or perhaps wait for the 4a?
Pixel and others use mostly software based - computational photography to do it for you so that means they are the ones cheating your eyes, not Sony. hahaha
Well, if you like heavily processed and oversharpened photos then Pixel is for you.
@@BatAskal lol 😂.. then you can buy 2012 smarphone, no computational photography.. so funny fanboys 😂💔.. sony still not better in image processing man.. trust it.. don't cheat your self.. 🤦
@@peterdurum434 better sharpness is not over sharpness.. 😅 then how about sony's overexposed images and videos? is it better? Ah?
Sony brown out the highlight on portrait shots while Pixel keeps the highlight nicely!
Very true
Sony said it is going to have a night mode and raw support through an update. I wonder when would that be. It's been ages.
It hasn't been ages when the phone released two weeks ago. Might be ages since they said it, sure, but it makes no sense they would actually make a thing of an update dropping long before release, aka no one would ever know it didn't exist. So in those terms, it hasn't been ages, cuz it can't be.
Let's hope that really happens
Sony has more aggressive bokeh.... I think it does similar to the human eye. Pixel made photos that almost made pain on my eyes, because flowers were too sharpened, and it felt like I am drunk. I prefer Sony, but sometimes Pixel did better
Cool, respect the opinion. Thanks for sharing.
I like the Sony better overall, but the pixel had way better skin tones in that one selfie.
Thanks for sharing your opinion. I also feel it isn't much of contest with the front cameras and the Pixel does a much better job to me.
obviously im biased as i have a pixel 4 xl but i found those photos to be better than the xperia everytime so far. Im up to minute 3 of the video so far
We all like what we like, so no wrong opinions here.
I think the color of sony is more accurate and natural..prefer sony than pixel..
Fair enough.
9:29 That switch was a bit jarring. Wonder if this is because it switched lens, or if it was a software implementation (sharpening)?
🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Pixel but barely
Video gave it the edge
Sony stepping up
Yeah I also thought Sony did well in this comparison.
Photo Pro App and Cinema Pro please
Overall Pixel 4 still holds the crown.
Cool, respect that opinion.
Plz sony xperia 1mark2 vs iphone 13 pro in photo pro thanks
where is the comparison of night mode?
I mention it at the beginning of the video, link a card, and it's linked in the video description. Enjoy!
