There's one dispute between the Netherlands and France, albeit not in Europe. It's on the shared island of Saint Martin, concerning the Oyster bay. It kind of dates back all the way to 1648, so that's quite fun to resolve. Another interesting (controversial) topic might be how Indonesia basically annexed Dutch New Guinea instead of letting the island unify as one independent nation, or the whole situation surrounding East Timor.

@EmreAnil ALTUNRENDE There is no dispute between turkey and Greece except the delimitation of the EEZ. The island of Imia that is mentioned at the video is obviously greek. Since turkey has no sovereignty at any island that is more than 3 nm from her coast.( except the island of imbros) Imia is about 6nm.. everybody that signed the treaty that ended the 1st WW ,( basically all the world) knows what is greek and what is turkish, but they choose to remain silent. Turkey also says that we don't have the right to extend our territorial waters to 12nm.(although everybody else in the world has asserted that right) ..They also say that the INHABITED ISLANDS!!!!! Have no right of EEZ. (Although is clearly stipulated by the law of sea, that they clearly have) .We had enough with the turks. BUT even more we had enough with our EU "partners " (except a handful of them) that they clearly support turkey's outrageous claims...

Iclaims to be “sovereign”, but ti is not a country. According to the Oxford English Dictionary and many others countries must have territory. The Sovereign Military order of Malta is not a Un observer state, as some “fun fact” sites tend to say, it is an observer, a position also held by organisations such as the International Red Cross and Crescent. Many countries don’t recognise Order of Malta passports, and those that do do so simply by tradition, and of course those countries’ laws apply to the people with those passports.

It's not entirely in Europe, but Denmark has a border disagreement with Canada: half way between Greenland (part of Denmark) and Ellesmere Island (part of Canada) is Hans Island. Both Canada and Denmark claim this island. And the dispute over the island is ongoing, with shots fired at irregular intervals. But shots are "fired" in a rather untraditional way: both countries every now and then have their respective navy visit the island, and hoist their own flag on the flagpole on the island. They thus remove the flag of the other country. They also remove the bottle of alcohol the other country has left, and leave a bottle of their own country's alcohol!
So in this border dispute, shots are not fired but drunk!

    BUT...
It turns out the town they were from was part of (In date order from about 1600)
    :~ 1600 Denmark
:~ 1620 Germany (although Germany didn't exist, they were part of one of the principalities that eventually formed Germany)
    :~ 1660 Denmark
    :~ 1690 Germany
    :~ 1715 Denmark
    :~ 1735 Germany
    :~ 1745 Denmark
    :~ 1760 Germany
    :~ 1780 Denmark
    :~ 1800 Germany
    :~ 1825 Denmark
    :~ 1845 Germany
    :~ 1865 Denmark
    :~ 1875 Germany
    :~ 1895 Denmark
    : 1919 Germany
    : 1945 Denmark
So are they Danish? or German? It all depends on which decade of which century you're talking about

The video discussed and explained nothing. You could have as well read a Wikipedia list. The thing is no one questioned China's sovereignty in that area for most of its history. The claims from other countries are fairly recent because the US military presence encourages them to, cutting off China's trade routes by sea. Also, incompleted WWII land returns and the ongoing Chinese Civil War add to that.

Also Romania and Moldavian republic have people on both sides asking to be united but political interests and Russian interest want to keep Moldavia separated. Even further then Moldovia, some Romanians ask for Bessarabia and a part of Bulgaria

    • @Alexandru_Iacobescu
      @Alexandru_Iacobescu 3 года назад

@@viktorkaposi8256 it depends a lot with what view point you come in to the discussion. I tend more on the EU side and eventually removal of borders and integration of rest of the European countries. If that happened it is irelevant what cultural autonomy any part of europe choose to have. But you know the point used against giving total control. With global warming we will have more and more emigrants that might ask the same off us all. Personally I am not afraid of cultural autonomy as long as it respects the law. But it is a little frightening the fact that you still are part of România but can't buy from a store or order at a restaurant because you don't know the language. Good thing that I know english. Maybe that is the future. We all speak english outside and our original language in the family/community. I am against patriotism as that permits wars and discrimination but we must also consider that in Transilvania we don't have only one grup of people there are several. For example what about gypsies, jews etc. Everyone should have autonomy in privat but in public we should choose what best fits all groups not just one.

    • @Alexandru_Iacobescu
      @Alexandru_Iacobescu 3 года назад

@sza A lot to unpack. First "Transylvania was given to Romania bc of the Romanian majority of the population." Not correct this was the result of the WAR. Romania had a choice if we allay with Germans we would receive Moldovia + Bessarabia which was the first choice of Romania but after a Quo near the middle of the war we changed sides so at the end we lost Moldovia and received Transylvania as long as we accept a procommunist party in Romania. You can say it is semantics but this is my point that the borders are were they are now not because of the people but because of wars and politics. Look at Russia today they just taken part of Ukraine and the reason that there are more people of x nationality in an area is just an excuse. If that was true Romanians are all over the world and some Areas of France, Italy, Spain, or England are majority Romanians should we get that small pockets of the country changed to Romanian control? I think not.
My political views are liberal and I would like to be an "world citizen" but I know that a majority will not approve. I think the reason is because the people in power use that normal people by appealing to the patriotism line so they can keep us separate. I think that patriotism is a bad trait, it is the reason terrorists attack and soldiers kill.
Language is not a reason for me to be afraid to loos in an united world. Language always die. It is going to become like Latin. I consider the advantage of all the world specking the same language much grater then then the lose of parts of culture. But that is me I don't speak for all. If culture is so important then i think there are ways to keep languages alive and for all to have a second language that is sheared (lets not go to much on a tangent)
The idea is: are better then our ancestors? We always think in tribal way. This is My tribe! This is My Land! This is My Faith! and I will kill, fight, and take advantage of others not in my Tribe so my Tribe can survive. We have protected our cultures with the price of countless lives and we have a "sunk cost fallacy" mentality about this "you know how many have died for our country". I can't ask others to sacrifice there language and culture for a world with less wars and divisions but I would gladly sacrifice my part of culture.
The argument of controlling traffic at the border for the purpose of controlling criminals at the borders I think is wrong. No big criminal is bothered by customs it is just an extra cost to add to the price of the end product. Borders just crate rich borders controls. and if you have the money or will you can go around any border. If borders worked we would have 0 immigrants and 0 illegal products. And if borders is the only way to stop crime why don't we split our country in more parts to stop criminals from moving around our countries ? More money should go to preventing crimes then to try to catch them.

And we asked some people here, they said that that nothing changed for them, but at least Russia builds schools and hospitals and tries to look after architecture of this place, so they enjoy Russian rule more. Spain does NOT recognize British sovereignty over Gibraltar, nor does the UN, which considers it a colony in need of decolonization. There's indeed a secondary issue on the border, because Britain occupied the neutral zone, but Spain only recognizes the "ownership" of Gibraltar by the Crown of Britain under Spanish sovereignty (as those are the terms of the treaty of some 300 years ago). As such Spain does not either recognizes that Gibraltar has territorial waters of its own either.

Thank you for including Rockall in your video. The dispute is, as you state, not about the rock itself but about the continental shelf west of Rockall which gives the country that claims it the exclusive rights of natural resources under it, including oil and gas. The continental shelf in this area is separated from the continental shelf of Ireland and UK but continuous with the continental shelf of Iceland and Faroe Islands. The governments of UK and Ireland, however, claim it based on their claim to Rockall since Rockall is located on the disputed continental shelf. In economic terms, this dispute might therefor be the biggest dispute of them all.
In the last 100 years, Iceland has once been occupied by the UK (May, 10th 1940) and the countries have also had series of confrontations, so called Cod Wars. Each of the disputes ended with an Icelandic victory.

    • @gruntymchunchy1527

Incorrect. Ireland does not claim it.
Ireland's position is that it is a rock in the middle of the sea.

And certainly no one can claim 'exclusive economic rights' to seas around it.

@@elnoideelsencarrecs8528 There is no mention of recognizing any claims. The only thing said there is that there shall be no violation of mutual borders, which in a way Spain has been doing ever since, as the treaty giving back Olivenza was never followed. But it's not like violating treaties is a first for Spain, right?

@@elnoideelsencarrecs8528 I don't care if Olivença is Portuguese or Spanish, but the treaty you mention specifically includes a list of treaties to be revoked on Article 12, and the Vienna Treaty is not part of it. "Inviolabilidade das suas fronteiras comuns e a integridade dos seus territórios" can be interpreted in several ways:
One of them gives you reason, as you could argue that "fronteiras communs" refers to the territory administered by each country at the time of signing.
Another reading, and the one I believe is correct, is that "fronteiras communs" refers to the borders as already defined in past treaties, including the treaty of Vienna.
All in all, that's not important, as the people of Olivença are happy with Spanish rule, but if you want to justify your point with treaties, be prepared to get other treaties thrown at you.
Ultimately, one thing is certain: Laws and treaties are a mess, and you and I are both irrelevant in all of this.

Also, on the Greek-Turkish dispute: In 1975 the Turkish army formed the "Ege Ordusu" (Aegean Army), headquartered in Izmir and covering the entire west coast of the Anatolia Peninsula. Up to that moment Greek islands in the Aegean Sea were not militarized. However, repeated military exercises performed by the Ege Orsudu, during which Turkish forces violated Greek airspace, triggered a response by the Greek State setting defense military posts across the Aegean islands in view of this "clear and present danger". This was a lawful step and had been executed under the provision of, and in accordance to Art. 51 of the UN Chart, where any member state retains "...the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence".

There were 3 Invasions, first 2 were quickly repeled, and the 3rd was successful, however the british troops, along with the remainder of portuguese forces, managed to retake the country. A comment on the Greek-Turkish "dispute" section: Article 12 of the Treaty of Lausanne stipulates that "...Except where a provision to the contrary is contained in the present Treaty, the islands situated at less than three miles from the Asiatic coast remain under Turkish sovereignty." In the absence of any such provision for the islands of Imia/Kardak and since they are beyond the 3 mile limit, this matter is not to be considered part of any territorial dispute.
