I haven't seen that stuff in a while. I once tried to clean it up with paint thinner. What a mess! That was before the Internet and easy access to information.
If you're like me and cannot get laticrete products in my area, the mapei ecoprim is a good product for the same purpose and works extremely well. Used it several times in this application and for plaster substrate for backsplash, (even though the Mosaic thinset says you can just go right over top of the plaster at the bond I do not trust it) and have had zero issues and great results

This is interesting because I just got off the phone with this company and they told me you cannot use prime and bond over existing adhesive and that it has to all be removed because you’re only as strong as what you’re sticking to and my tile floor won’t last if I go right over black mastic
I use the Mapei version of this. You can tell when tile was placed on top of the cutback because they sound hollow when you tap on them. The primer is very easy and simple! Thanks Isaac!
They also sound hollow when they're not installed properly... thinset skinned over, failed to back-butter, etc. One thing about tile over cutback though, is it's easy to remove!
I'd be curious to see a 30 day bond test done with either ceramic or porcelain tile. My basement floor has cut back over every square inch, I removed the old linoleum tile when I moved in. I think I'll try it as I've been wondering what my options are when I finally get around to putting in a new floor...

I removed old hardwood floor for LVT. I noticed after removing the hardwood floor that there is a vinyl floor beneath it. There is a significant amount of hardwood floor adhesive left on top of the vinyl floor. Do you think I can use this product to smooth the vinyl surface? Thanks
Will this work with sticky adhesive tile for a cheap route? But tried scraping old glue off and it's hectic in a room I'm doing. Or do I have to do like different tile to use the prime and bond
This Laticrete product says not to use over asbestos. PerfectPrimer is the one which is designed for asbestos. Not sure any of this matters at the end but just saying that black adhesive likely had asbestos in it.
Great video im having issues removing tile adhesive off a basement concrete slab...can i use this product right over it and tile using ceramic? Will it really bond to thin set?
Damn wish I knew about this years ago... Anyone know if you can set tile over epoxy pebbletech floors and if this product could be usefull for that? my old boss had me tile over one 5 years ago and as far as I know it never failed, well I have another job coming up in a few weeks over one.
80s adhesive made with asbestos, Usually people just grind the floor down until they get a smooth, uniform substrate. I’m glad there’s other ways to go about doing a tile job over this stuff. Laticrete should really sponsor isaac at this point lol
Hi, been looking at uncoupling membranes. Was being steered to Blanke Permat because the claim is that it adds substantial strength to the floor in using the mat. Nowhere have I seen any comparison tests on crack isolation or strength claims. Loved your tests on grouts ,very surprising. Plenty of people using these uncoupling membranes but no comparisons. Saw Sal DiBasi's endorsement of Blanke Permat. We may all be surprised in a real life comparison of products in tests.
From the spec sheet: "When bonding to cutback adhesive or other adhesive residue. Do not use adhesive removers, solvents or other chemicals that may penetrate into the concrete."
Often this stuff was mixed with asbestos. I hope you wore significant protective gear. When I dealt with it, I did the primer method (different company's product).

Thank you so much for that TC. Have an identical situation in my house and this infor will help much when it's time to fix the floor.

This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you!
I do asbestos inspections and testing, that looks like black mastic. Those vinyl tiles can also contain double digit percentages of asbestos.
