- Traditionally, Hexagon tiles only came in a small size like a 2x2 or 1x1 Mosaic. But a more modern format is now available in 8x8, 9x9, or even larger. These larger hexagon tiles are great for a small bathroom, laundry, entry or powder bathroom floor.
This video explains in detail how a beginner or DIY'er can install these hexagon tiles with great results.
In order to keep this video from getting too long, I left out some details but those can be found by clicking the links below:

We're DIYers and today's our fist ever tiling job, which just so happens to be in a similar size bathroom and with the same size hexagons and layout as you used in this video. So, this couldn't be more relevant and your tips are very helpful. Appreciate the extra time and effort that goes into sharing your content. Cheers!
Got lucky on that toilet flange if I didn’t watch the whole thing I would’ve guessed you did the layout off the flange lol nice job !!!
thank you. I install tile A LOT as a renovator and I think every time i watch one of your videos I pick up another helpful tip or nuance that I can use. Always appreciated.
Thanks for going the extra mile to bring us along in a way that not only makes sense but looks amazing. Your video quality seem to be a reflection of your attention of detail in your tile work.
Watched the whole thing! Awesome man!
Thanks Matt!
Man you’re so chill lol, just finished doing my small half bath with octagon Carrera tile and it was like a stress test haha. Looks great though so was worth it.
Nice Job. I’ve only ever done square or rectangular tile so this was great to watch before I tackle our bathroom. Mine is way out of square but I will definitely lay it out dry which is really good tip. Thanks for taking the time.
Solid video, some good fundamentals. Testing for square can be done pretty quickly with the 3-4-5 system as well.
Or a simple corner to corner.
3-4-5 is most accurate
3-4-5 method ?
@@jesseaguirre6827 measure 3 foot off your line 4 foot off the other should equal 5 foot like a triangle
Hes demonstrated the 3-4-5 before
I'm wife just picked out Hex tiles doe our walk in shower, this is going to be a big help thanks for that you do.
I’m really grateful for guys like you. The amount of time you put in the videos cannot be appreciated enough!!! Thx a ton
Excellent video, a good explanation of how to lay everything out. Thanks!
I’m so glad I came across this video. Your video is well put together, and easy for me to understand. I have done tile before, but not a floor. I am going to do the bathroom upstairs. It’s a little bigger than this but all in all I think I can get it done. I will let you know how it goes.
I like how you do it systematically. Nice. 👍
This is literally my next project, perfect timing
Good luck!
Thanks!
Thanks for your videos much appreciated from Australia 🇦🇺
Your video literally saved me so much time!!!
17:55 And I [We] so do APPRECIATE the extra time it takes to make these videos for us. Know don’t have/need to; so I greatly appreciate what you’re doing🙏🏻
Nice job on this little bathroom, and like the bigger hex tile compared to the smaller ones, little easier to cut; than again, just depends on the job itself, etc…😉
You have yourself a good day and hope things been going great for you, family, and your crews.
Just a quick question for ya, you been having trouble getting blue remodel electrical boxes (1 gang and 2 gang) as well over in CA?
Catcha L8R on the next, cheers Isaac✌🏻
Yes
I've watched a few of your videos and they are well done and very helpful so I'm now a new Sub!
Well thought out and good work sir.
Great video, thanks Isaac. Keep it up! Love from London.
It’s awesome ! Thanks coach
Thank you for this video. Exactly the tile my wife picked out down to the color. Very informative learning the square lines. I always mistakenly thought you work off a center line out. My only question is only 24 hours before grout? Interesting
checking the square is much easier with a laser level)
Good video!
Nice one. Hops your alright pal. Sounded a bit down at some points. Fab vid and content as always.
Do like the finer details you touched on. Pre prep ect. Alway interesting to see you guys have to deal with old chap also. 👍
Thanks again for sharing your time.
Thank you for this video it's awesome!!
Very good job. In production work we base off doorway and do not give importance to rear wall where toilet and vanity will be covering.
I’m just a DIYer, but if I don’t have a full tile where I step through the doorway, I’m triggered!
I really like the look of hexagonal tile.
Love your videos man. You've helped me with multiple diy projects
Perfect job, but to avoid the problem of cover lines with thinset, what I do it is once a time I instal the first tile or two tiles, I put the square laser on top of the first tile and just follow the laser lines !!!! Thanks
Every home owner I’ve ever met that mentioned hex tiles always gives off a “I miss my coke days in the 80s” vibe
super helpful great instruction
Planning on retiling my half bathroom in the near future. Thanks for the tutorial. The measuring is still slightly confusing to me 😂.
Excellent content.
Nice video...As a DIYer it would have been really helpful about 2 weeks ago as I did tiled a basement bathroom with hex tile. Still learning. Thank you
Love your videos
Great job explaining all your prep! Bro, you need a laser level that shoots an x!
Thank you for these excellent videos! Why did you backbutter the doorway tiles only?
Such a good job!
I watch your videos all the time and have learned a lot. I would like to see a video of how you do a linear drain. I have remodeled two shower already and moved the drains to accommodate a 24inch and a 36 inch linear drain with fantastic result. But I would like to see how you do it, since it's a little different from a traditional single drain. Thanks
Best tape measure 👍👍
Awesome job
Do you need to back butter those tiles? If you have 5x7 hex tiles do they need to be back buttered?
Killer work man
I check in with the wife. That was to funny u mention that. Lolz
Great video. Thank you
Keep making them!! Do it for Jesus! I appreciate you and making informative videos.
Great work 🤷🏽♂️
I love "TileCoach", I love "TileCoach". I bought the yellow bucket liner it recommended, but I found that I prefer the blue bucket liner one, which is cheaper and thicker.
Great video, very helpful since I'm about to do my first tile job and I have hexagon tiles. Nice squat btw. Are you wearing barefoot shoes of some kind?
This video is great to show why you should start at the door and make your way out. Most important place is when you step in. As you can see leaving it to last gives you half pieces there
Even if you get a sliver of a cut at the bathtub? There are no set rules to layout. All sides need to be considered not just one.
Do not turn with hex tiles...just go in straight lines towards the door
@@TileCoach Do not turn with hex tiles...just go in straight lines towards the door
You are wrong, dude... if you don't know what you are talking about (and you don't), you should probably just keep quiet, ok?
Thanks for the video, I'm grateful for you sharing your vast knowledge. I was waiting to see how you level the tile, is this not required? Thanks again!
Great Job 👌👌
Thanks a lot, Well appreciated.
Thanks for all your videos...so helpful! I'm tiling a bathroom right now with identical hex tile over ditra xl. At the ditra/tub contact my tile shop recommended waterproofing the joint by 'caulking' with kerdi-fix, then applying kerdi-band with All Set onto the ditra parallel with the tub. I just watched another of your videos where you show that Kerdi-fix is not a sealant but an adhesive and will wind up leaking. I'm wondering if I'd be better off caulking the joint between the ditra and the tub with silicone instead and then kerdi band before tiling. I'd really appreciate any help!
Came for the layout, stayed for the install.
I this situation I would get a center line in the room first the square off the center line and adjust as needed.
You can then adjust the lines from the center to get the cuts on all four walls equal from side to side!
I feel your pain on that last piece of tile!
Good support 👍
Dang. Now I want hexagon tiles in my home.
You should hashtag that bond braker. I couldn't find anything on the web when I ran across this on my master bath.
Laticrete Prime-N-Bond
hard to believe that toilet flange cutout was so lucky...!!! lol
한국이에요.
자막이 있어서 좋아요.
I wonder if taping lines with 1/4" tape and removing after mortar is spread would work.
You might to checkout the video, "trowel and error" the NTCA put on with custom building products. just a helpful tip.
Beautiful
Tile coach, what are your thoughts on the Guru shower system? Would you be willing to do a video on it??
I back butter every tile i set, especially on floors
So we were tiling shower walls with octagons. Tough! Recommendations on octagons against the Schluter?
Why did you not back butter the tile? Seems to be a preference things amongst tilers.
How lucky you were with that toilet flange (or was it luck)!👍
Hi @TileCoach
Is there a reason why you’re using those horseshoe spacers, instead of the ones that also maintain the tile level like the wedges for example?
Please upload a full video of drainage systems
Is there a reason for not back buttering the tiles?
Usually hexagon tiles are marked by some arrow on back side. Arrow shows proper orientation. Since this most correct way to install is "rear to front" row by row
Personally, I think the most someone is gonna inspect the tile floor is sitting on the toilet. I plan to put the rows going under and beside the toilet as whole tiles and work to the walls from there. 😊
so is that door swinging into the bathroom or the bedroom
If you were doing a corner hearth for wood stove, would you start from the front edge making your way back to the walls or the back corner forwards?
I should also ask if your corner is not at the exact 90° angle, what would you recommend for above question too.
I’d like to see a video like this where it’s not a “perfect fit” because that’s usually how my tile jobs end up, and I have to figure out how to fix it.
Do you have to back butter ?
@TileCoach What camera are you using for filming? How do you manage with angles in tiny rooms such as this? Wide angle lenses or built in camera features? Thanks!
Nice thanks!
What is it you apply to the floor before the mortar??
At about 12:25 in, you measured from wall out 11.5” and the measured from control line 3 1/8” to get where to start with first 2 full tile pieces. But, you ended up starting with half tiles from wall. So, why am l measuring out from wall?
I will be putting similar tiles soon in my bathroom. I have already poured 1/2 inch self leveling concrete over plywood subfloor and my question is do I need to use unmodified thinset or can I use modifed with polymer? Because based on the reading I have done so far I have understood I need to use unmodified. Am I correct?
Coincidence or karma? I’ve been subscribed for while now and have had a hex tile planned for just as long. Thanks!
I’m hoping to center my tile on the doorway if the cuts left and right don’t end up as slivers. I’ll find out soon….
Question: I noticed you back-buttered that last tile in the entry way, but didn't see you back-butter the rest of the room. Is that because the entry gets the most foot traffic?
How do you ensure there is no lippage?
hello how many time to do it please
Can you explain why you didn’t use an uncoupling membrane, I know it’s concrete, but concrete can crack or is it because it’s older and would have cracked already?
I'm guessing it wasn't in the customers budget
I think you only use uncoupling membrane if the surface is wood as wood contract and expand at a different rate.
Do you have to grout hex tile ?
No back butter?
No need because he had full coverage using that 1/4x38 trowel.
He did. Watch until the end.
I calculate 90degree lines. 3-4-5 is the tool for having right triangle where one corner is 90 degree. Google 3 4 5 triangle.. you can multiply those when having larger areas.
How hard do you press on the tile wen you install them
When to back butter?
Coach, How is it you aren't forcing the tiles down more? It seems you are just setting them on top of the mortar. Won't that leave a weak bond? Thanks!
Do you host any classes in LA?
Hi I have to put a terrace with tiles and I don't know how to give the waterfall ?? Any help or ideea. I have two drain pipes on the small side
Love your videos but wheres the level how do tou know theres not crowns or dips in your floor and if your out of level ?
Will you not have any lipage?
You love getting a check from youtube
