Hey, you there, reading the comments -- it's become clear that I was WAY OFF in my guess at how old this particular Christmas song was (I'm also laughing at myself lol). I appreciate everyone taking the time to correct that error, but no need to be the 100th person to do so -- the first few comments settled that score very quickly 😂 I hope you enjoy the rest of the analysis!!

And then there are those carols that are really old, but people think are modern (as I've seen in reactions to Home Free's "Go Tell it on the Mountain")-- I think it all comes down to what you first heard the song. If it's part of your *own* early memories, it seems like it should be early in history. Also, to be fair, the melody is written in an "old sounding" scale, compared to most pop music.

Mark Lowry wrote this, in Dec 1996
Tim and Chance have been working together, so that may be the reason it sounds like Tim. 307 Reacts heard this song in concert, and said Chance was doing the bass, and that it sounded the same as the studio version, so I think it’s Chance doing the bass.

I also suspect that those deep, rumbling, rolling bass tones you hear sporadically throughout (to such great effect, such as at the end of "the great...I AM") are being done by Adam Rupp because I've heard him do those exact tones in his recent beatboxing solos on stage in concert.

Home Free did such an excellent job with this!!! This has been a great month for innovative covers of old/traditional songs (big shoutouts to Geoff Castellucci and Tomi P + Casper Fox for their amazing covers as well). I really, really like how much artistic freedom they took to make this piece their own, while also staying true the core of the song. Bravi, tutti!

All the guys are remarkable, but I personally think Chance is the most underrated voice of the group. He does all the bass on this, and many others, but with a 4 octave range, his natural baritone just contributes so much, whether coveirng bass, harmony or lead. Having 2 quality basses, and 3 quality tenor voices, just gives them the flexibility to do just about any thing in any genre. Love this!

Chance is technically a bass-baritone. This gives him a stronger than average baritone range, while being able to actually go slightly lower than an average bass, too. An average bass only has a strong vocal weight to D2; Chance's vocal weight is still pretty strong to a B1. He can go slightly lower than even that, he just doesn't have Tim's vocal weight.

"Hundreds of years...?" Try 1991... That may seem like centuries ago to a whippersnapper such as yourself, but for us old folks (57), that makes this a new song... This is one of the relatively few contemporary Christmas songs that I really enjoyed performing in a large men's chorus. Anyway, I couldn't help but get a chuckle from that chronological faux pas. Thanks for the comic relief...

Peter, I’ve listened to several of your reactions and interpretations of Home Free songs, but without a doubt, I think this one for’Mary, Did You Know?’, is really one of the best!!
I love Home Free, I really enjoy this songs & their messages ❤and as far as I’m concerned, you’re one of the best!!
Here’s a suggestion - get their video of HF doing ‘Pretty Woman’.
They are dressed to the nines w/gold lame’ jackets ’ (not sure how this is spelled - being a former Reference Librarian over 30 yrs. in Dallas & Salt Lake City, you’d think I’d look it up and verify !!
Oh! I almost forgot a very important item in this video, Besides the gold jackets. They’ve all got pompadours!! Whoever styled their hair, and I think it was wives & girl friends, did an incredible job. They must have gotten a lot of laughs that day.
Blessings and best wishes - and get well soon.

Really nice to hear a reaction from someone besides Elizabeth Zarhoff who is picking up the little things that are happening in the background of these songs. The thing that sets HF apart from PTX, to me, is Adam Rupp. You mentioned his beatbox sound effects in the vocal stops around the phrase "The blind will see....";, etc. You are the first reactor to notice this and I've watched a LOT of reactions. You never know what to expect from Adam. One thing you didn't mention (no one has, I don't think) was the choice to use the VERY OBVIOUS vocalists' taking breaths in the opening section. Most of the time, you don't want people to hear you breathe in...this time it was very obvious and an excellent arranging choice. Really enjoyed your reaction....subbed.

Thank you for your wonderful reaction. I'm glad you picked up on the crazy beatboxing sounds that Adam had going on. There's no logical reason those sounds should work in such a traditional sounding song. But they totally work! As to the bassline, it's getting really hard to tell who is doing it unless you actually see them singing the part. Also, Adam Rupp has some very similar tones in his arsenal of vocal treasures. Again, so hard to say unless Home Free confirms it. Have a safe trip home. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

it is really hard to tell who is doing what and truthfully that's part of what I love about them. It gives them so much flexibility and fullness to their sound. They can have one singing bass, one doing the bass line, and one throwing in a bass drop all at the same time. Similarly, on the high end, you can have any 3 to 5 of them singing tenor at the same time. It's what makes Home Free unique

As someone who's a huge fan of Home Free and Voiceplay and developing her own acapella arrangements, I really appreciate your technical explanations of technique. It's really helpful to understand the underlying concepts better, and you do a great job of breaking everything down in ways someone who hasn't gone to music school can understand. Thank you so much for your videos! I've been watching and subbed for awhile now but idk if I've ever commented. Between you, TCV, and Mortius, I feel like I'm getting such a better perspective on how my favorite acapella role models compose their covers.

Thank you Peter for another great analysis! As a frontline hospital worker, the past few years have nearly broken me but I've found comfort in getting back to my vocal roots and allowing music to soothe my soul. As a contralto, I've always been drawn to the lower notes and I appreciate your insights as a bass singer. If you're looking to branch out a bit, I'd love to get your take on Johnny Cash's version of Hurt (originally written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails). It's not the most technically proficient vocally, but in my opinion, it is one of the most heartfelt, raw, and beautifully haunting performances of all time.

As an elderly aunt from OZ please don't shatter. I understand (mostly) how hard it is for northern Americans and their carers. But from us in Oz full support and appreciation for all you do. We all "know" how important you are at this time.

You were asking about Chance's bass range - there's a track he did with Street Corner Symphony called Stay With Me where the comment sections says he's singing A1s - I'm no expert to be sure, but it sounds very good, whatever the exact note.

  • @virginiaholcomb9033

Listening closely, it sounds like there is some layering on this track. There is a section where you see all of them singing the lyrics but you still hear a sustained bass underneath. So I think that you are hearing both Tim and Chance.

In 1984 Mark Lowry thought of the song but it was played first in 1991 while he was with Gaither Vocal Band. I think Chance had the bass because Tim was singing

Hi Peter, as always, your analysis is insightful and I learned something. Thank you.
I would really love for you to do the reaction/analysis of Tim‘s recent solo Come go with me (actually, I‘d love your take on the whole album, as it get‘s freakier and freakier with each song) and Tim and Austin‘s take on My Maria. I‘d like a bass singer to explain to me, in small words, what‘s goin‘ on, cause I don‘t understand. Please and thank you.

Nope, this one isn't very old. Written by Mark Lowry in 1984. Music in 1991 by Buddy Greene. And originally recorded in 1991 by Michael English. This 'tube vid is in mono, for some reason. Sounds much better in stereo.

When you said those base "boom, boom, boom." had Tim's feel to them.
Watching the video we can see Chance move his head down with the notes.
He can hit those notes well. If you've seen Mayday, you know what I mean.
But yes, I thought that was Tim just hearing it too.
They seem to have started working that in more.

I love the way you analyze these songs in your reactions. You say so many things that I'm thinking when listening to these songs. I would love to see you do a reaction to Tim Fousts rendition of Cant help falling in love. It is a very beautiful cover and I love what he did with his vocal arrangements in that song! This is a great rendition of this classic song but I think Cee Lo's version hits the hardest for me emotionally but the I love the way they arranged this song and the ending is beautiful. I would also love to see you a reaction to one of William Singes songs. I would love to hear your take on his vocal arrangements.
