And once again, music has made me tear up while shooting a new video 😭"Shenandoah," this beautiful American folk song, has been a staple in my musical listening and performing experience since I was a young child. Geoff's version brings new life to it, and captures the essence of the piece while also making it his own -- in my opinion, that's the whole point of making a great cover song. As always, a big shoutout to Geoff for being the best in the biz at what he does. Please enjoy!
I think it's sweet when music makes you cry, it's refreshing to see a man be secure in his emotions and to freely express them ♥
Geoff is also from Virginia . He moved to Orlando when he was eight.
Diana Ankudinova, please, for the love of low voice!! 😁
Fellow JMU Duke here! My husband is also a JMU Music Ed grad. (We are much older than you though 😂😂)
I've also loved this song forever and it always moves me.
A beautiful version of this song was sung by a small, local choir in Charlotte NC, called Carolina Voices. It's a home video, but the feeling of the song comes through. Give it a listen:
ruclips.net/video/LM9ASFftM4Y/видео.html
We know he could have pit-vipered the crap out of the song, but the fact that he didnt, makes it a better song and him a better singer.
Very well said!
Geoff is originally from Virginia & his family moved to Florida when he was a young boy.
Geoff Castellucci cannot create anything that’s not unbelievably incredible. His “Shenandoah” is one of my favorites. Thank you for this analysis.
Shenandoah is such an old beautifully written song and Geoff did it as he should, simplistic, and deep! It's a timeless piece! I'm 63 and have been sing this song from childhood in grade school and still love it! Good job Pete and great job Geoff!!!
I loved when he changed keys and the piece became more powerful. It was such an emotional choice to add that instead of staying more traditional.
I absolutely love it when Geoff sings in his higher (baritone) register. One of the reasons I like this so well (aside from the beauty of it) is that he sings so much of it in his baritone range. There notes are cool, but the baritone is gorgeous.
It's just so pretty isn't it? In every way. Makes me tear up every time I hear it.
Seeing you become emotional while listening made me feel better about tearing up when I watched it before this analysis.
I first heard this sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford on his TV show in the '60s. I truly enjoy Geoff's version. Right there with you made me cry. He did this one for Kathy. Said she loves it and that's what matters. Smart man keeping the wife happy.
And smart wife, getting him to record this song! 💜😁
YES to the commentary on tasteful riffing!!! Totally agree!
I’ve been anticipating this reaction video since I watched Geoff’s premiere. 😍😍😍😍 I love it so much. Thank you for being amazing Peter!! I learn so much from watching your channel.
Man, I would love to see you and Geoff do a piece together, it would be so amazing (just my thoughts as I watch lol)
It definitely felt like Geoff was experimenting with riffing in this, and I quite liked it.
Geoff introduced me to this song, and I deeply love it! His voice is so smooth that it gives me a sense of peace, and almost like floating on a calm river, if it makes any sense. I admire his arrangements, he creates more of a new song than a cover, but keeping the original meaning. Personally, I think sometimes he throws in those real lows to please followers and reactors. This has a perfect balance, and the harmonies are epic!
Thanks for another great analysis, and I'm really glad you enjoyed it too, Peter! 😍
This is such a beautiful and calming cover. I really love Geoff's interpretation of the piece - this has become one of my favourite things he's done. Thanks for the analysis!
I’ve sung this in Chorus as well and thrilled to hear Geoff’s arrangement. It’s like he’s singing a lullaby…❤
I have watched many of your critics but this is the one that has convinced me that you are the best that RUclips has to offer in artist criticing artist. Music is a passion of mine in many ways and I’m very knowledgeable about the subject so I appreciate it when I find those whine I can learn from. Thank you. Keep up the good work🌸😉
He has such a way of just moving you with every note. So smooth and silky, I too had tears with this song as well as the famous Geoff inducing goosebumps. It doesn't matter how many times I've heard it, same results each time! That's what makes this so amazing is that it can have that effect EVERY time. He is so respectful with his renditions of songs and thus far have been some of my favorite versions of these songs he does.
His range is so impressive, I love his lower range but he also has a very beautiful upper range as well, it doesn't break or crack and it's so smooth from one to the other.
Took us to church!
Thank you as always for your in depth reaction analysis of this! I love to see how much the music moves u as well.
As an old lady that has NEVER been able to sing and has always wanted to I most of the time have no idea what you are talking about. But you are so interesting and knowledgeable and after checking you on google I know that you know what you are talking about. I have all my life loved base and Geoff is my favorite, and between his singing and your great reviews, well SUPER👏👏👏👏👏
I've listened to it at least 15 times in the past few days and it literally sooths my soul. Beautifully done.
The devil’s interval….my new favorite phrase. 😃I learn so much musical theory from watching you! Excellent!
I heard this earlier, and have been waiting for you to cover this one. Now in an interview Geoff revealed he was born in VA, grew up in FL. So, he has some VA roots like us. But being a Southerner, I'm sure he grew up singing this song too.
Geoff at his best .
There is a small town in Iowa called Shenandoah as well, and I always think of it when I hear this song. And it is only 40 miles from the Missouri River.
Yay! Another "Tuesday Treat". I was hoping you would do an R&A for this one as soon as I heard it because Geoff did such a beautiful job with it. It's been one of my favorite folk songs since I was a kid, too. And *thank you* for what you said about riffing in "The Star-Spangled Banner"! It's a pet peeve of mine when a singer goes nuts on it.Thanks for another great R&A.and I'm looking forward to the next!
He did fantastic as always. Have listened to it many times.
This is a beautiful arrangement and sung beautifully as well. Love the harmonies in this. Thanks for your analysis and reaction
Oh MAN!! Got all wrapped up in this and burnt my 🥓!! 🤣 Now I have to go listen to the piece straight thru!
17:30 think of this chord as minor subdominant, which in key of D is G. Very common turn. Flat 6 is called the nostalgia note, (not official) xxd. Or in this case is more like II.7 chord, but with that nice flat 6. So it creates sound of half-diminished chord. And of course you can use chord inversions by changing the bass note. I'm sure you know that, but if not, or somebody was confused.
I liked this analysis. Overall music theory goes over my head, but even without understanding the theory, because you stop to discuss it I notice new things. And you addressed a lot about about the arrangement which is so much of what makes his work so amazing.
On his Patreon page he revealed that the piano he used in the video was one half step flat from the piano he performed on in the studio. Then he gave us the “treat” of listening to both at the same time. Horrendous!
Another terrific analysis bro. If you haven't already, you must check out Tim Foust's latest drop. It's. Mash up of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" & "Stay". It's unreal
Agree 👁👄👁👍
I third that!
I fourth that !
I’m a Virginia boy too and it’s so awesome you’re from there too! I had so many friends go to JMU and I’ve visited it many times tho never went. Shenandoah is the most beautiful place on earth
Thank you so much for the Glenn Miller mention. I don't know why it's made me so happy but it has.
So beautiful.
I love your reactions. They are true and honest. Your voice is also just easy to listen to.
It’s wonderful to see that emotion, and know the song touched your spirit as it has so many others. And hearing little bits of singing while you give analysis is so much fun! Thank you for taking the time to do this one, it’s so helpful in understanding the nuances of the song.
Thank you for a great review. I do learn a lot of techniques from you. Your explanations are easy to understand. That is appreciated. PS. Geoff is a gift. Thank you.
Frank Ticheli’s band arrangement of this song actually did things to me, man. One of the best things I’ve heard.
It's one thing to hear someone honor the work of another exceptional artist. It's another wonderful thing entirely to hear one honor his work with a lot of work by the analyst. I really appreciate the time Peter takes to educate us about the things that make Geoff's work great; it helps me understand how better to support my own exceptionally talented daughters in their musical journey, since I have no musical talent (but great appreciation) myself. Good work, Peter, and many thanks; you legitimately earned my sub.
This was so beautiful, thank you for helping us appreciate Geoff's vocal capabilities even more!
Very -- Very Tasteful!!! This is one of my most favorites from Geoff! (I know, I'm a yr late) Be Safe
I totally understand and relate to the idea this makes you tear up. I also have known and sang this song (or heard it sung) throughout my life, and Geoff's brought back so many memories and made me teary too. I love this version, and I agree, it's the perfect "non-showboaty" way to breathe some new life into this song. Great breakdown/reaction as usual. :)
Enjoy your content very much. I was shocked at how many people did not know this song, reading comments on his video and other reactions. Folk songs are so malleable. They are from a time when music was mostly non-professional.
I think I detect some homage to Tennessee Ernie Ford's version, but Geoff definitely made it his own. Love his chord choices, and I agree about tasteful riffs, although I'd put Gladys Knight's 2021 super bowl version a titch above Whitney's. Notes should not multiply indiscriminately like unto bunny rabbits.
Thank you for all these. I’m brand new to Geoff and all these RUclips music video productions in general, but wow I am obsessed. I even joined Spotify so I could get more Geoff music on the go, however, I’m so involved in listening that I can’t just put the playlist on and go about my work. I have to stop and listen. When Geoff goes really low he reminds me of Harold Reid of the Statler Brothers, another favorite, and yet another Virginian. Thanks.
I couldn't wait for you to react to this video since I first saw it. Geoff did a brilliant job with this old favorite. So beautiful and, I agree with you that, it brings a tear to the eye. Thanks for your superb and heartfelt reaction and analysis. 💙
Yay, thank you for reacting to this one, and for letting us see it move you! It's a beautiful, beautiful song to begin with, and this version uses so many of Geoff's talents in just the right ways.
Love the vocal analysis, of course. Not having much practice differentiating placement/color/etc. in low voices, it's great to have help in listening for those things, so I can more fully appreciate mastery when I hear it. (I do feel a little pleased with myself that I have just enough of an ear, and have learned just enough from your videos already, to be pretty sure that that slightly push-y "a-cross" just before the modulation would grab your attention for a sec. 😁)
Really fun watching you make the same faces I do along with the chord changes, and of course, always enjoy explanation from someone who understands how the harmonics and chord structures and stuff actually work. Fantastic stuff!
I learned this song back in the late 50's and sang it in chorus throughout school. Have enjoyed dozens of pro's versions but Geoff had me feeling like putty. The absolute favorite rendition in my experience. Your analysis was spot on, and your honesty in commenting is appreciated.
I love this song he did. Watched it when it was released. So good.
Just listening to the way you speak, you have a very resonant voice.
Thank you for all your information - it’s one of the reasons I look forward to your videos. As a Canadian viewer I had never heard this folk song before but fell in love with it when I first watched Geoff’s preview video but thanks for giving actual details about it. Much Love from Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you for your interesting reaction. I really like your explanations. When I first watched the video I wondered how you would react. For me it seemed like Geoff listened to the critcs and tried make it better.
I love listening to Geoff's voice and the harmonies even though the song is a little bit too slow for me.
This man should be illegal 😭 so many feels!!!!!
This song, the background/stage that he’s on just fits together beautifully, his arrangement of this song was amazing, thank you for the reaction!
My music education has been on the percussion and percussive arts side of things. But I have learned so much on the vocal arts from watching your videos. It is truly a treat.
I really want to see you give his version of “way down” by Elvis! I want to hear your technical analysis of that one. I have grown to love love love hearing other singers/voice coaches, etc, react to these covers and yours are def my favorite man!
Like many I have been patiently awaiting your R&A. There was so much to enjoy with his arrangement however one of my favorite pieces was the ending down to a breathy low and then the tasteful sign off.
I tend to forget how low he actually is in some parts because it sounds so normal and natural in his voice.
You talk about how high and low these notes are and then sing them like they’re nothing. LOL. I was hoping you might talk about the rich undertones after that first key change. I’ve listened and listened. I THINK they’re vocal but they sound like they could be synthesizer as well. I really do think this last year Geoff has worked really hard on his singing. He’s pulled way back on singing in his mask. He still sounds like a country boy-none of those round elongated vowels you hear with classical singing, and yeah, a LOT of scoops. But it seems like his timbre has gotten even smoother if that’s possible. Warmer.
Anyway, I also hope Geoff is checking out your reactions because there’s a lot of good constructive discussion. You get what he’s doing and can pick apart the details and explain them. As always, this is a terrific reaction.
Waiting for your next tune!!
Hey fellow JMU Duke! Found your video/channel after falling in love with Geoff's stuff, really enjoyed it!
Go Dukes!! 💜💛
Thanks SO much for your review of Shenandoah! I've been awaiting your take on this great arrangement since Geoff released it and my checking out various other reviewers' reactions in the interim.
love yr review peter...love yr vulnerability to his beauty too...
24:42 it was the same chord as I've mentioned it's function is II. chord. So it goes Standard II. V. I. With some inversions. Root position of this chord in E is F# A C E. That flat 6 comes from it's minor scale. In minor scale it's reversed.
Had my tears welling also and being Australian I have no emotional attachment to the song. Along with John Denver's Country Road...Almost heaven, West Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains Shenandoah River....Music has no boundaries. Love this version. Geoff's voice & the arrangement is divine. Great reaction, love your voice too
One of my favorite childhood songs!!🙂i used to sing this in choir growing up in school ...always found it a beautiful song, but wow!!what he does to it is fantastically AMAZING!!great version.thanks for reacting to it!✌
This song has been in my chorus repertoire forever. It is definitely one of my favorites.
we all love Geoff here! 🏴
Incredible! But my favorite version is still by the King's College Choir from Cambridge, England.
Absolutely gorgeous. Loved your analysis.
Thank you Mr. Barber for another wonderful reaction....Very informative, and educational....I also like that he didn't showboat in this one.....It kinda sounded barbershopy near the end.
I have loved this song from Geoff since it came out, and also gotten emotional over it, but not knowing music theory it's hard putting the feelings into words. Thank you Peter for putting the theory on and voicing why this works so well ❤️
Always enjoy your reaction and analysis of Geoff's work. Thanx for being here for us!
Great...and I mean truly great....analysis. Your heart for this song could be felt.
This video made me subscribe. I love this song
I just made a comment elsewhere yesterday about that 'tasteful riffing'. Tim Foust does it with his cover of Can't Stop Loving You.
I would love to hear a reaction to Phantom of the Opera with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum, wonderful song and by far favorite movie.
Ohhh I've been hoping for this one❤️ stunning
Yessir, teared up myself. Great reaction and analysis!
Your analysis videos help me learn thing I might not have known existed in music otherwise. Thank you for the education. Stay amazing.
Geoff's range is bananas and bananas is good. Sometimes, he, simply, takes my breath away.
I've heard many takes on this song over my nearly seventy years on this rock we call home, some beautiful, some much less so, and Geoff's is right up there with some of the best. It's smooth and gentle and, even though there were a few flaws, I believe it's the flaws that make it so beautiful.
I, completely, agree with your assessment of Whitney Houston's singing of the National Anthem. We had to sing it when I was in glee club in grade school. That song is a bear to sing. Our glee club was made up of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders (I was in fourth grade) and, I hate to admit it, but we butchered it. I hated every second of singing it because we were brutalizing it. I couldn't wait to get away from there so I could hide. Then, again, I guess nobody expects a bunch of little kids to be pitch perfect. (Unless you're talking about the von Trapp family.)
Lovely video Peter!
really enjoyed this - thanks!
Your reactions are so excellent and informative
Shenandoah Valley in Virginia too! Graduated from Mary Baldwin in Staunton and been to JMU too! Graduated from HHS in Harrisonburg! Go Dukes!
sissel kyrkjebø has a wonderful version of this song as well. Way different style, but also very beautiful, thanks for the wonderful reaction.
I love this song and I am also from Virginia!! About to go to ETSU to study music education :)
Yes to the comment regarding tasteful riffing! You mentioned the Star Spangled Banner and my first thought was "OH GOD YES." It is so overdone most of the time and it's annoying.
Fine version of a great song, enjoyed the review. The "Star spangled banner" was mentioned - a Gaither Vocal Band version (video with plain green background that comes and goes on RUclips) is worth a listen...
This is my favorite song and Geoff really does it well. Tennessee Ernie Ford sang it well but I think Geoff does it better. Great reaction Peter
Peace, Love!
i did a performance @ DGN i miss That
I love everything about you Peter. What else can I say ?❤️
If you love this song, you have to react to Peter Hollens sing this! He's not a bass singer, but his version is absolutely breathtaking! Such reverence for this beautiful song. Make sure you listen to his solo version, not the duet (it's sped up too much). I can't rave enough about his version!
Nathan Gunn did my favorite C'est Moi in a bare stage version of Camelot by the Met. I was so pleased to hear you mention one of my favorite baritones.
In all truth, I like the Texas Tenor version slightly better. The lead tenor of the trio, John Hagen, is an operatic tenor and won an Emmy for his arrangement.
I liked the standing Geoff's (why do I keep thinking each Geoff is really a different person?) part best.
Oh, I so agree on Whitney Houston too!
how can you hear all the background singing so distinctively? For me they become very easily "the background". Is it the experience of singing as a bass and being the background for most of the compositions?
FYI, Tim Foust is now releasing some similar videos now that would be good to also react to.
E4 is on the high side of my chest range, too. I'm a girl. For a male, basically any male that isn't a counter tenor, E4 chest is impressive. To me.
You like Accapella and you like metal?
Heres a suggestion with the best of both worlds:
Van Canto!
They are an accapella Metal group. Yes, you heard right. Accapella, but with metal.
Songs i reccomend:
Battery (Metallica Cover)
Wishmaster (Nightwish Cover)
If i die in battle (i was in the music video)
the bards call
They got some newer stuff as well, but in my opinion those songs are a good entrypoint...
I know this is probably requested a lot, but why haven't you done Tim Storms - Lonesome Road?
Would really like to see your take on Diana Ankudinova, a young Russian contralto, with and exceptionally low and complex voice. She's not a bass singer but the closest you might find among female singers. Here's a shortened version of a classic sung for a Russian singing competition. "Can't Help Falling in Love" ruclips.net/video/M-znD6QKbrg/видео.html
You should react to Johnny Cash - Hurt
