  • I love VoicePlay, it's no secret. So when I saw they released an acappella cover of one of my favorite Disney songs of all time, you KNEW it was coming to the channel! "Hellfire" is one of the darkest songs Disney has ever released, stemming from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and I'm just absolutely here for this. I am so excited to hear what they've done with this piece!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to VoicePlay performing "Hellfire" for the first time.

Something that puts VoicePlay at the very top of their genre is that both Laine and Geoff arrange for the singer. They do not compose a song based on vocal ranges. They arrange specifically for who they want to sing the part, knowing their range, timbre, and even sass. Occasionally causes an issue when a guest singer is not available, but I can imagine the joy and commitment in singing a part because it is perfect for you.

100% agree. And on top of this is that VoicePlay's level of musicality is immense. And at a level that is very difficult to teach in my experience.

This arrangement is a masterpiece and those that can’t hear it must be musically deaf. The way Layne used major and minor, tempo changes and the different voices to depict Frollo’s inner conflict was genius. I particularly loved Cesar’s little guitar riff and Eli’s super high belt on You Will Burn. Epic 🔥

I think that some - not all - who “can’t hear it” actually do, but for whatever personal reasons they have, pretend they can’t. Or they don’t actually listen. They’re locked into their preferred group so it’s part of their schtick to put down others.

I KNEW that if you reacted to this that you’d giggle when he got to “sin!”
Do you notice how Cesar breaks the fourth wall, glaring at the camera? And his solo-he starts matching Eli’s high note and then drops to baritone, leading in to J.None. And his guitar bit-think that’s an F#4-sweet!
I don’t know if Eli is into collaborating, but I’d love to hear him sing with Jonathan Young. And his acting-he looks like he’s crying at times. He just slays it every time.
Thanks for pointing out the perc during the Kyrie part-that snare/sizzle! I hadn’t caught that bit yet. Great reaction/analysis!

I LOVE EVERYTHING Voiceplay does because they *literally* get better with every video, every song...that to me is the sign of brilliance, that they never stop improving! I remember a time when I kept getting better and better, but since my super laryngeal nerve was cut in a surgery on my spine (they went through the front) I'm grieving the loss of my voice. Although I *was* a coloratura, I can now only sing in a Diana Krall range. I mean I love her but it's not MY voice. My greatest wish is to see these guys in concert someday, but they aren't touring. So I content myself with listening to these kinds of videos. Keep bringing these gems!

Tony Jay's (Frolo's voice actor) is up there on my list of favorite voice actors. He really defined a generation of animated villains. He doesn't appear to have done a whole lot of singing, but I'm certainly glad he did for this song. This song has long a special place in my heart. Delving deep into the passions and reasonings of a man struggling with temptations stronger than anything he's felt before. Blaming everyone but himself for what's going on. But at the same time being more concerned with his passions, than his murderous heart and allowing it to drive him further into the sin he's already accepted in an attempt to avoid the sin he has not.

Mischievous, sure, but not evil), and Frollo is one of those villains that absolutely makes my skin crawl. But Geoff brought it. I have to give him credit for stretching as an actor.
Obviously the song as a whole is amazing, as always. And also, as always, her analysis makes the song that much more enjoyable to listen to. Love to everyone involved!

Totally agree. The man definitely has range, and not simply musically. He gets some real acting done in these performances. For example, there are some moments in Jack's Lament where I'm wondering if he's been playing around too much with a Ouija board, the way he channels some of the darker elements of that character so effectively.
And then in the Paul Bunyan short, he's right back to his normal 'aw shucks' self! Range! :)

At the end, that "stuttering" sound Layne makes that you call a double down beat - great term - would probably be called double or triple tonguing in a brass instrument. I hadn’t noticed it until you pointed it out. Great percussion from Layne - of course.

Regarding the comment about the original piece having more dome than the cover - from what I recall from earlier episodes, you tend to associate that with classical training, operatic singing and the like. To me it would make sense for Frollo to sound like he has that classical training; he's very much the kind of character who uses his status and refinement and the perception of his importance, authority and sophistication to his advantage. Thus he should have that classically sophisticated style of singing. For Frollo it's merely a veneer of refinement and sophistication that covers an absolute piece of trash human being (which this song very much reveals), of course, but he clearly plays the game well enough to actually be convincing.

And yet another vocal analysis worth every minute of watching. I just love how you point out those little details and explain things I would otherwise miss, it's so great and gives me so much to focus/work on when singing myself! For me, your reaction videos really stand out, even from those made by vocal coaches. ❤❤❤

Compared to a wine-tasting at the very beginning, this reaction proceeded drop by drop. It was fun though!
Regarding subharmonics, Peter Barber mentioned in a recent analysis that it doesn't actually use the false folds, apparently it is just the chords, but vibrating according to a different pattern. Which matches my subjective impression from experimenting.

I had been eagerly waiting for you to cover this song and am so glad that you did. I learn so much about music every time I listen to one of your reactions and cannot thank you enough for that.
When I heard VoicePlay's version of the song for the very first time I had some trouble comprehending it, as it was literally the first time I heard that song at all and I had no idea what it was about. I just thought it was a very good song. Re-hearing it for several times and figuring out it was about the hunchback of notre dame, I began to realise that it was way more than just "very good" in capturing the athmosphere and the story behind the song. I eventually went for the original, but I have to agreee: It's an interesting song for a Disney movie, but VoicePlay went and made it epic.

Fantastic cover and great for the season as the guys are dressed like vampires (only enhances the video.) Lindsay is just amazing on the violin. If you don't get to react to it live, I definitely recommend you and Kirk listen and watch on your own. Pulls my strings everytime!!!! Still in love with music everyday. ❤

Your reaction always on point, so educative and so fun to watch. Much beloved and appreciated!!! Just a side note: "Kire eleison" (Κύριε ελέησον) is Greek Christian Orthodox chanting, not Latin 😊, but you are right, it means "Lord have mercy"!!!

Koine Greek. It's not specific to Greek Orthodoxy, although they also use it.

@@BartonBreen I specifically said that "Κύριε ελέησον" is a Greek Orthodox Christian chanting and not Latin. I did not discuss as a Hellin my self who is using my language in my country (more than 90% Greek-orthodox Christians, religion whise), or as known for a few decades as "common Greek" or "Κοινή Ελληνική γλώσσα" which was adopted as opposed to the most "official" or "intellectual" "Καθαρεύουσα", since the common one was used by the majority of the population. But thank you for your input.

It took me a couple of views to realize that while Geoff is Frollo, the other singers are each a part of Geoff's psyche. J None is begging Maria to protect him, Eli shows he desires Esmerelda and if he can't have her, destroy her, while Cesar is blaming God's plan. The final question is what part will Geoff succumb to. It is a stunning piece, evil, mesmerizing and unforgettable. Check out J None's solo Am I Here. It's heartbreaking the pain he shares with this ssong. Another one that is a blast from the past - VP dropped Friday - The Lion Sleeps Tonight. It started off as a mini but they were having so much fun that it is a full-length in mini format inside the mall and Pattycake.

That's because new Disney is borderline evil - and they're creative directors admit it in board meetings based on their self-described agendas. It's not about family friendly and politically neutral entertainment anymore.

Banjo, cello, guitar, mandolin. Sometimes a small kick drum, no other drum and none needed.
Their best known song is 'In Hell I'll be In Good Company'. I particularly like their version of 'You are My Sunshine'; it's the way it should be sung- not as a happy, perky song, but as a yearning, pleading song. They also have done The Doors' 'People Are Strange' and System of a Down's 'Chop Suey', among other covers. Who knew Bluegrass could be so versatile! Great videos with all those. too.

For the record... this is a wonderful cover. But no cover will ever come close. Tony Jay just had the most unique and amazing voice, and he was a wonderful actor. There's just something specific about his performance that makes it the most perfect version it can be. I grew up on the show "Reboot" where Tony played the main antagonist (Megabyte), and when I heard him sing this... I was terrified and I simply melted. It's THE performance of "Hellfire". This is a deliciously wonderful rendition, and does the song SO MUCH justice... but there is just no substitute.
RIP Tony. Thank you for your part in so many wonderful memories.
