    You said he was singing with passion. He said in his Patreon introduction that he didn't expect this one to be very popular, but that his wife, Kathy, liked it. That was good enough! It was only him and Kathy in the studio that day.

      @@JenniferGlatzhofer, Geoff has a video where he and Kathy talk about her hearing loss and how they’re dealing with it. • @Badger77722

    "Smooth". I think that may be the best overall description of Geoff's voice, when he's not actually rumbling around with sub-harmonics (which, simply because they rumble so much, I couldn't really describe as smooth). But in his normal range, all the way up to his tenor range, everything else he does is just so smooth that if you didn't want to keep listening, you might use it as a lullaby to put you to sleep at night.

    I really enjoyed your combined reaction and analysis. This was very enjoyable. Please do it again occasionally. Geoff was complaining that this piano was not tuned to the correct Hertz which made him work harder for notes that are normally known to him. Being off a quarter or half tone must be tricky. Shenandoah was done as a request from his wife, Kathy. Peter Barber just had a chat with Geoff which is an hour of interesting bits. He talked to Geoff about his assertion that he is really a baritone. Peter wouldn't have that and that was worth the price of admission. Bye, Jen and Ethan!

    • @EthanDrewMusic
      @EthanDrewMusic Год назад +2

      Prior to the 1920’s, the A4 note was tuned to 432hz, which is why music prior to this time seemed to always be slightly flat/lower in pitch. During the roaring 20’s, the music industry began gravitating to a tuning of 440hz for that same note, A4, which raised the pitch slightly, and resulted in all subsequent music sounding a bit higher/sharper in pitch. There were artists who continued to sing/perform in 432hz tuning; however, they were few and far between after the 20’s.
      Since almost no one alive has seen the days where 432hz tuning was the norm, it is completely normal for artists today to have some issues sticking to the pitches, seeing how 432hz tuning is a foreign concept to a number of them. 🙂

    Geoff’s voice suits this song beautifully, doesn’t it? Out of curiosity I read a bit about this song, as it has been around a long time. I think you might find this “analysis” from an old book about American folk songs interesting:
    “The sonorous succession of long vowels and soft and liquid consonants blend perfectly with the romantic air.”
    I live in an historic town right on the Missouri River. Listening to this has me looking forward to the cooler days of fall when the leaves are awash in color and the air is crisp, taking a walk beside the wide Missouri River. ❤

I love when he layers, echoes, and those chords he mixed in to the original to elevate it. Geoff never disappoints in arrangements and of course his VOICE. Side note: I'm so glad Peter Barber finally made it clear to Geoff, he is NOT a baritone, he is most definitely a BASS (and a low one at that). Finally, someone explained it to him from a professional bass singer perspective and not just fans in awe by his subterranean voice!

    This is such a wonderful piece of music that leaves room for many interpretations. Peter Hollens has covered it in his higher voice, and it sounds beautiful. “Tennessee” Ernie Ford has a cover version done from his TV show in the 60s that is pitched even lower than Geoff that is awesome (Geoff references Ernie Ford in his interview with Peter Barber, specifically in reference to the song 16 Tons, also performed quite famously by Ernie Ford). An absolutely excellent performance by Geoff and a very, very interesting and informative analysis by you and Ethan.

    Geoff is definitely a bass, even if he doesnt see himself as one.
    Peter Barber explained it well. There are different types of bass: some are louder, some have more agility, some are better at singing long lines...

So many little details in this song, though between you and Ethan I think you caught most of them. 😁 There was one point (12:35) where piano Geoff dropped the half step on the word "Shenandoah" to briefly take the sound minor rather than stay major. I've always been a sucker for key changes, and found the one in this song more thrilling than most. As the new key is resolving, there is what I think of as a cymbal "shimmer" followed by the introduction of the low bass instrument (string, synth?) which really put it over the edge for me. Love your analysis and looking forward to more Geoff and Voiceplay.
