Have you seen Geoff's interview with Elizabeth Zharoff? He talks about how he does an arrangement, and he said he listens to other covers so he doesn't do what everyone ELSE does. I think he NAILED this one. NO ONE else has done some of those chord variations.
What I like is that you are not a one and done reactor. You seem to realize while others don't that you need to hear more than one song from someone to get a feeling for who that artist is. Your in-depth analysis and your sense of humor are appreciated by this old guy.
Geoff has said that he doesn't need to warm up his voice as he's always singing. And Kathy would vouch for it. She has said that she always knows where he is indoors as she can hear him singing. :) You do know that there is no issue with copyright with Geoff and VP I suppose? They never block. But stopping for comment is a different thing.
They don't block, but will copyright claim, except for fair use. That's why reactors who analyze with pauses and explanations fare better than "watch someone else's product they've invested thousands of dollars in producing, and increase my views and revenue instead of theirs" type reactors. Jen, Peter Barber, Elizabeth Zharoff, etc. value add and so earn their portion.
@@randiskye4444 It is normally record companies who do that: invest thousands, and have copyright issues. I don't think Geoff or VoiecePlay have thousands to invest. The patrons do a great job but I doubt it runs into thousands. They pay copyright for every song they cover and Geoff has said that their Boy Bands in 5 Minures has never earned them a cent and never will because it cost them so much in royalties to produce. You can't put them into the same bracket with artists who are signed to recording companies.
I was waiting for you to do this one. FerretMom said earlier that the S&G version was the warning, Disturbed's was the anger and Geoff's the sorrow. Geoff has the uncanny ability to yank out all the feels of a song and smack you in the face with them. I'm a huge fan of his bass, but I'm really liking hearing him use his full range too. The background music/percussion/vocals just kept ramping up the intensity throughout the whole song. That final verse was amazing! He's just so talented and IMHO one of the best arrangers in the business, followed closely by Layne. I can't wait to see what's next!

I can kind of understand Geoff's reaction to this. I don't know if you saw the video where he talks about Kathy (his wife) and her deafness, but I would imagine it's been a struggle to deal with unwanted silence, especially for a musician. He has handled both this song and that topic with class and aplomb.
Thanx, Jen, for getting on this so quickly. I watched your face during the middle clash note section and could see the joy. Was glad to hear your comments after the fact. The most disconcerting thing about this cover was that the background Geoffs were never seen. This is the only time (so far) where he has sung harmony and not had the other guys make an appearance. I always love your reactions to Geoff and Voiceplay!

We need enough clones of this guy for a live performance. I think Geoff is under rated, a fantastic all round vocalist, his bass singing is exceptional and he has some amazing arrangements.
First I have to point out, that it is so strange to me that you have to keep saying that it is an analysis-video. If people don't like the way you are doing things, then they can just leave, why do they have to say anything about it... Second of all the more I listen to Geoff's cover of this song the stronger it seems to hit me emotionally, but the ability to amp up the emotions of a song is just one of the amazing things about Geoff.
Hello Jen, I have been listening to you for a while on Ytube, I have to let you know, I have just heard Geoff Castellucci s version of Man Of Many Sorrow,it is amazing.
Such a beautiful cover. This is so melancholy and sad, but there is a light of hope at the end of a long, dark tunnel. This song literally touches my soul and makes me cry every time I listen to it. There just are no words to properly describe how it makes me feel.
I mentioned because, in the opening sections he obviously keeps his smooth sound by not rounding the pharynx keeping a very smooth vocal fold under relaxed, but without that fry one might expect. Love your analysis. I will subscribe.
I love this version of Sound of Silence. Simon and Garfunkel's version is stored up on my precious shelf but I really do love Geoff's for most of my listening. Jen, VoicePlay dropped a new video today 9/27/24 - Be Prepared which is incredible.
Jennifer! Not terribly late today. Oh my Geoff really did take this one in a different direction, especially certain sections of it. But then I guess it's getting harder to do something fresh and unique with the song now that it has been covered a good bit. I was mostly hanging with Geoff until that "take my arms that I might reach YOU" ... he absolutely dropped into the abyss on that YOU didn't he? And I just love that you bravely keep trying to hit those lowest notes! 😂 I just have to laugh and say this is why we love Jen so much. 😊 What an amazing finish to an incredible week of videos Jennifer. Thank you so much for another awesome reaction and analysis! 😊
Awesome reaction as always Jen. This is a beautiful song and video. Voiceplay released their new video yesterday... Golden Hour. With a cameo by Kathy, Geoff's wife as a toy maker.
Great reaction Jen! As a former choir kid (fifth grade-senior year of high school) I love hearing your technical breakdowns of WHY and HOW Geoff does what he does. It helps me appreciate his work even more! And I love the new poster in the background! Looks like your dream role is Bobbie in Stephen Sondheim's Company, since that's what the poster represents. Would love to hear you take on a song from it someday on your channel. (I was also a theatre kid, and love theatre unabashedly). Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Voiceplay's newest!
Every man with some manliness in their voice loves to hum. The chest and head vibrate in a way it doesn't when we open the mouth. Girlfriends and dogs love to lay with their heads on our chests when we hum. 😄
Lovely reaction and analysis, I love all the small things you pick out from Geoff's arrangement here. You and Peter have become 2 of my favorite analyzers of music. Side question: What kind of mic are you using here in the video? In the market for new one myself for recording.
I have no idea what musical that poster is from, but, as a Dutchman, I very much appreciate the map of the Netherlands right beside it!😂 Also, I loved the reaction, as always. You are, along with Peter and Mortius, one of the reactors/analysts I always watch for Voiceplay/Geoff.
Those low backing notes are really powerful with a subwoofer. Maybe I have my sub cranked a bit high, but when there are any little scraps of cardboard (thanx to my cats using their cardboard scratching pad next to the sub) on the floor in front of the sub the scraps of cardboard dance around. Also when the cats are investigating, the start of the low notes makes them jump. My wife finds the low notes relaxing, she says it feels like they are massaging her brain. Does anyone know what waveform they are? I'm thinking simple sinewaves, but I can't be sure.
Could the poster be Brenda Russell's setting of "The Color Purple"? I remember a scene where Shug wears a red dress and holds a piece of birthday cake. Thanks for your thoughts on this one. As this gets more and more covered, the space of "unique takes" gets smaller, but I think Geoff managed to carve out a niche for himself by making it a post-disaster lament, as distinct from the S&G original warning, Disturbed's rage we didn't hear the warning, and Pentatonix's leaning into choral colors.
When I've heard Geoff's "Sound Of Silence" for the first time, I was thinking: "What Jen tell me about it? I'm sure she'll like the piano, his drops, chorus, oooos and mmmms, but what she tell me about it?" Now i know ❤ Great reaction and analysis, thank you so much. BTW: You look different, now 😊 Are you getting younger? Not fair 😋
It's hard, perhaps unfair, to compare performances because each artist brings their own perspective and strengths to a work. I think I still prefer Simon and Garfunkel's original version and (was surprised!) Disturbed's cover was equally good. The Pentatonix cover and Geoff's (this one) are good, just not as good, not as impactful. I feel it is a high bar to meet. Good analysis as ever and it's always a pleasure.
Yet another great video. Love your breakdowns of videos like this, picking stuff up most people wouldn't. Fantastic. Please check out "blacktop mojo" and their cover of "dream on". Would love to hear what you think of it. Hope you enjoy it 😊
This is a very good cover, but not my favorite. I did enjoy the BV Geoffs when they came in with that very low occasional rumble that just tickles your brain. The original came out when I was in college and it will always be my favorite. My favorite cover is the duet from Peter Hollens and Tim Foust which is on Peter's channel. And The Hound and the Fox do a very nice version with Adam Chance. Neither the PTX nor the Distrubed versions made a positive impression in me. Far too theatrical and noisy for this (mostly) soft song. Loved your reaction and the insights to technique, as usual. Have a great weekend! Oh! I like your new poster. Not a clue what it's from, though.
Geoff’s version of this is not The sound of Silence and let’s called it: The sound of Volume: mixed of loud and silence in this of different dynamics he using. Are you with me?
I think Geoff is always super creative when doing his covers. I wasn't sure about this one but every time I hear it I like it more. Still not a huge fan of how pop he got towards the end but give me a couple more weeks and I'll prob love that, too 😂
THANK YOU!!!! I was starting to feel like I was going insane and no one else could hear the off-key note he holds at the end of the second line for “again”. I’m not sure what his deal is. He can obviously carry a tune and stay on pitch… ALMOST through an entire song. I just don’t know if he can’t hear it when he goes sharp/flat or can’t/doesn’t want to re-do a video before putting it up when he does it. If you notice, he NEVER drops any sour notes in his more heavily produced songs where he layers over himself? (Just an explanation: I just call any bad notes that are bad for any reason, on any instrument, including vocals cords, sour notes. Kinda like fruit- if it’s not good, it’s bad, does it matter if it was not ripe yet, overripe, moldy, eaten from the inside by a worm, or started fermenting? No. It’s just bad and not good). I don’t know if he’s trying harder because he HAS to harmonize with himself or if it’s auto tune (I REALLY REALLY hope not), but it’s still a problem. He drops a sour note in House of The Rising Sun on the very first word which threw me off so bad (because I thought the first word was setting the key for the rest of the song but it was the only note that was OFF key for 2 lines) that it took a while for me to recover and catch up with what he was singing… then dropped another in the 3rd or 4th line, I lost track because of being thrown off by the first word being off-key. I have so much trouble understanding the contradiction of this man’s pitch that I can’t appreciate anything about his singing except that he has an excellent voice. Which just makes me more frustrated because IF HE CAN SING WHY DOES HE KEEP DROPPING 1-3 SOUR NOTES/SONG? It literally hurts my ears like nails on a chalkboard or when someone screeches in your ear as a not-funny joke to scare you. I’m not trolling here, I’d truly appreciate answers if anyone has them about what his deal is with it? I WANT to listen to his songs but I’ve had too many “jump scares” from the sour notes and I’m afraid to try it anymore. This was actually my last try, when he hit “again” so badly off-key and just held it without even trying to correct it I couldn’t reach my phone and had to yank my headset off and LITERALLY listen to the sound of silence for a good 5-10 minutes to get my ears to stop hurting and my brain to stop playing it on loop back to me. I know I have perfect pitch and have some trouble hearing HOW FAR off a note is rather than just being off vs correct, but these sound sharp and flat enough for most people to be able to hear. So are people hearing and it doesn’t bother them? Is this some kind of test to see if people care if you’re in tune if your voice is good enough? Aaaand we’ve circled around to the beginning where I feel like I’m going insane.
i have listened to this already and it is good but I don't think it is Geoff's best. Disturbed did this 10 x better than the original imo and that version is my go-to when I want to listen to this song. Geoff's version left me a little cold and felt a little lifeless.
For me it's the exact opposite. Not that S&G's left me cold at the time, but that I've heard it so often, it has lost much meaning for me. I didn't like the anger of Disturbed's. We'll see what Jen thinks, but for me, Geoff's version leaves me feeling the utter loneliness and disconnection from the world that the Silence brings. Of course, different people hear things differently and each are valid.
Yeah I'm going to disagree with you there but that's why musical enjoyment is subjective. Disturbed had a great version no doubt but this is just next level, moved me to tears.
@@vvoof2601 It's definitely subjective and everybody is moved in different ways. it would be a dull world if we weren't and we would learn nothing new.
Sorry.! I can't handle Geoff.! To me he's just noise.! Tim and Avi are the best bass singers for me. Nothing against Geoff .! He seem a very nice guy.!
Love me some Geoff, but I'm not sure that I enjoy the vast differences and variations he puts on it this time. The song is already a legendary, emotional mover, and it comes off flat when you're expecting certain notes to come and then they're completely off. This isnt a song that I want to be jarring or to take me out of that emotional trance. Gonna pass on this one.
I really don't care for this arrangement-sure it shows all Geoff's vocal abilities but it destroys the simple beauty of this song. It jumps all over the place with voices coming in, trills, jumping octaves that don't make sense, Very disappointed!

Geoff’s version of this is not The sound of Silence and let’s called it: The sound of Volume: mixed of loud and silence in this of different dynamics he using. Are you with me?
is it Annie ?
Mary Poppins
Please react to new voiceplay cover please please
Jennifer, Could you Please do a Review of DIMASH, "Sinful Passion"?? ( I Hope you Love it too)! New Sub Here in Missouri!
hi.. 😍
please reaction Cakra Khan - Mariah Carey - Cant take that away from me, thank you
I think Geoff is always super creative when doing his covers. I wasn't sure about this one but every time I hear it I like it more. Still not a huge fan of how pop he got towards the end but give me a couple more weeks and I'll prob love that, too 😂
내가 가끔 트름 할 때 나오는 소리네..
Have you seen Tom ball perform this song on AGT audition?
Yeah I'm going to disagree with you there but that's why musical enjoyment is subjective. Disturbed had a great version no doubt but this is just next level, moved me to tears.
@@chandleraskew6496 just listened to that and it's not for me.
@@vvoof2601 It's definitely subjective and everybody is moved in different ways. it would be a dull world if we weren't and we would learn nothing new.
Does not compare to Disturb’s version, the deep deep baritone sound is strange to listen to.
Sorry.! I can't handle Geoff.! To me he's just noise.! Tim and Avi are the best bass singers for me. Nothing against Geoff .! He seem a very nice guy.!
YOU ARE TALKING TOO MUCH JENN
😁
