Another fan said that the original S&G was the warning, Disturbed's version was the anger and Geoff's was the sorrow. I totally agree. Geoff is a master at bringing out the emotions of a song and this one hit all the feels. As a contralto I'm drawn to bass voices, and Geoff's in particular, but I'm loving hearing more of his upper range. The background music/percussion just added to the anticipation. I can't even imagine what we'll hear in the future because every time I think it can't get better it does.
Geoff is probably the most creative artist I have ever heard. His ability to make the cover his own is epic. Also his ability to make it look effortless is incredible. He literally took the most covered song of all time and made it awesome again! I'm always blown away by this man!
Something funny that I found out recently. I was telling my mom about Voiceplay and when I showed her one of their videos she paused the video and had his "wait a second" look, she pulls out her phone and it turns out that my mom is friends with Geoff's wife.
Welcome to Geoff Castellucci. 😊 He also sings with an awesome group named VoicePlay. Check them out - ain’t a bum on the bunch. I’d highly recommend their version of Nothing Else Matters and Dream On.
Consider too the poignancy of Kathy's hearing loss and his perception of her sounds of silence. Another layer of depth of meaning and the emotion he pours into this amazing cover.
I love how Geoff basically did every cool musical effect in 1 song… multiple Geoff’s, 1 Geoff, piano, background, really low lows, high highs, funky chords, background ambiance… he’s got it all
I’ve had multiple iPhones. This is the first one that blew a speaker. This is the first that was expected to play Geoff. I suspect there is a connection.
Someone on another channel posted that S&G's was a warning, Disturbed's was the anger that the warning went unheeded, Geoff's was the sadness afterward, and someone else added that PTX's was hope. After listening to all of them, I rather agree.
FFS, it's the same, damned comment on ALL of SoS videos. Post something original instead of copy-pasting the same, tired comments that half the other commenters are also posting.
dear elisabeth, i wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart that your channel exists, because as a non-musician, your videos have greatly expanded my understanding of music and everything that music needs. I watch your videos and have been enjoying everything so much more intensely ever since. Thank you for making this possible. And thank you for sharing your knowledge of excellent examples such as geoff, voiceplay, nightwish, etc. with us. Thanks 😀
I love that Geoff took the song and brought the sadness of the lyrics out. Love that you know so much about music and can explain the ins and outs of his rendition.
He's definitely an amazing singer and his low notes are ridiculous, but the real star here is THE ARRANGEMENT of this song!!! Omg I just love it. I could listen to this over and over again
he takes you in waves. every transition feels so natural. he can go from five belting voices crying out to the heavens, down to one somber gentle voice in the emptiness.
Love the song and Geoff's take on it. I wasn't sure how he would take something done so many times and make it uniquely his. It's fantastic. After listening to it several times, I can't help but think the elements he added is actually making "silence" a character in the song using the underlying "static". I hope that makes sense. Thank you again for your reactions. I learn so much!!
I honestly don't know where to begin with this piece. Between the incredible dynamic range throughout the pieces - and how dramatic the change from mellow, almost melancholy to HUGE presence with complex layered chords and right back down to a simple melody and simple piano was. Any more drastic and I think it would have been too abrupt, but Geoff balanced it perfectly. Then add in the deep, rich, low intonation of the beginning of the piece, and again, any more and you'd almost call it muddy, but it's just... balanced. Then the sharp rise into such a high range, which not only balances the dynamic change but also showcases Geoff's incredible range. No one could argue that Disturbed's cover was amazing, but Geoff's is my absolute favorite rendition now.
18:00 Geoff has been exploring these incredible chord structures since his cover of "Way Down". What he is doing is just incredible and an inspiration for bass singers like me.
I was looking forward to your reaction and analysis! He did such a good job with this song. It has an air of sadness, somberness, and self reflection to it.
I love how he takes a well-known song like this and confuses the listener, keeping us always guessing and paying attention. Where there's usually a major chord that brings resolution, he inserts a minor chord or slight sharpness or something and vice versa. Arranging a cover for a beloved song is challenging in itself, doing it justice while making it your own is masterful. Thank you both!
Geoff’s composition had me exhausted by the time he finished the last verse. My heart was pounding and I had to catch my breath. All I can say is WOW! Your analysis, my dear, was spot on. I so enjoy your attention to the tiniest detail. Between you and Geoff, I get a truly exciting workout, and this 73 year old asthmatic thanks you both!
@@joergojschaefer3521 S&G is a classic Disturbed's is filled with over the top anger. The lyrics are very sad to begin with & Geoff portrayed it beautifully.
In the comments on his RUclips video, someone said S&G (original) was like a warning, Disturbed was the anger, and Geoff's is the sadness and reflection that comes after
He had the pedal down on “sustain”. So all the piano sounds sustained. That’s bold. For me, this creates a “heavenly” feeling. By heavenly, I mean a sense of infinity. Genius.
Thank you so much for your great reaction to this masterpiece! You help me understand even more of the magic that is happening here! Also glad to be on Geoff's patreon!
I like how this version makes the listener truly listen every note and word, unlike the Disturbed cover, which I feel just builds and builds in intensity to make itself heard.
The basic song is elegant in its use of words, telling this short story of emotion. Geoff Castellucci's version adds a sophisticated layer of talant and production skill to it. Makeing it an outstanding version that I doubt will be out done in quite some time. This may be in some ways better than the Pentatonix version, but thay had 5 people and Geoff just had one. Wow that's a good song.
WOW that part in the middle with "writing songs" gave me goosebumbs! What a surprise hearing additional voices and the incredible play with the meaning!
That introduction reminds me so much of Malukah's "Reignite", her tribute to Mass Effect. the pace, the opening bar... it's quite eerie! (Also someone you should check out if you have time! Frozen Sleep and Reignite are personal favourites). And is anyone surprised that this is yet another phenomenal piece by Geoff? Dude was granted a voice from the heavens, looks that could make an angel blush and a personality that warms the soul.
I always loved his highs. He can go so low it would be understandable if his high notes were not as full...but they are and that is awsome. I also always appreciated the composition in his videos. Like you mentioned, this is totally different than the other covers. There are conceptual meta things going on here that make it so much more interesting and thought provoking.
This is an amazing interpretation of an amazing song. I especially loved the section with the high notes, showing how truly extensive Geoff's range is.
See, I come to you to find out WHY it's as wonderful as I know it is! I loved the clashy, jazzy, DeBussy section! He is a great vocalist, obviously, but the fact that he does those complex, beautiful arrangements is amazing!!
I'm so glad you covered this one right away! I think this is Geoff's best solo piece yet. You're right; the arrangement he made -- the melody adaptations and the harmonies -- are spellbinding. Of course Geoff's impressive range, especially the low bass notes, and the smoothness and quality of his voice are amazing and top-notch.
Thank you for a very insightful analysis, so many interesting observations that make me appreciate this extraordinary rendition of The Sound of Silence!
@The Charismatic Voice and Elizabeth I just have to say through your channel I have found and started to love acapella groups and Geoff's bass is something many of us guys would love to have. Hahah. So we spoiled you with metal, and you us with different styles. Thank you for these years so far, hoping many more to come.
I think this is the most animated I've seen Geoff in any video. Layne got very animated in The Hall of the Mountain King, and here Geoff is really going to town. It seems they are both becoming more at ease in this sense. I love this. He's such a talented guy.
@@dmccarthy100 Yes, with that one he did say he had no idea where it had come from and almost apologised for it, because he's far too humble. I think this time he just let himself go. :)
For me, the shift came with Ain't No Sunshine. Prior to that he tended to be low key, emotionally. Sly humor, like in Monster Mash, but emotions were generally understated. Subtle. But after the anguish and desolation he showed in ANS came the blatant flirting and humor in Way Down. Had we seen him smile so much in a video before that? Not to mention the booty shake! Till Then is a ~gasp~ love song. Exploring a wider emotional spectrum could just be a natural progression in Geoff's artistic development, getting more comfortable in doing solo work and challenging himself, and having time to focus on storytelling in videos since VoicePlay isn't touring. But ... I think a contributing factor is spending time with Cesar. The newest member of VoicePlay has a contagious, effervescent joie de vivre that you can see in almost every video. He's very expressive -- funny, sassy, affectionate, yet can also make us cry like he did in Can't Make You Love Me. I think the new guy is influencing the "old and boring" guys to let loose (like Layne did in ITHOTMK) ... and I love it.
@@shirleykarr560 Yes you're right. And I agree. Geoff seems less ready now to describe himself as goofy. What I see most when he's not performing is the love in his eyes. He has a beautiful soul and needs to stop putting himself down as old and boring. :)
@@christinestromberg4057 Yes, he wears his heart on his sleeve when not performing, as a dad and a husband. In my romance novels, my goal has always been to get the hero and heroine to their happily-ever-after where he looks at her the way Geoff looks at Kathy. (A lot of people are going to sigh over the new VP video.) So sweet to see it in real life, especially after so many of my friends, both sisters, and my parents divorced. My hubby and I have been married 37 years but he stopped looking at me like that a long time ago. LOL!
Every time I hear another song done by Geoff, he pulls out something new from his bag of voices. There are a few truly extraordinary singers out there today and Geoff is definitely one of them.
I love Geoff’s interpretation of this and the arrangement is stunning. I really appreciate your analysis of it too as it helped clarify some things I was hearing and gave even more meaning to this version. I love it more and more each time I hear it! I think when you mention the dark, space/time feel it maybe sounds like the interstellar soundtrack. The score for that is incredible and has some other-worldly moments of being lost in time and space that I can hear Geoff bringing into his version now you’ve mentioned it. 😊
It's been said that Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning and Disturbed's cover was the anger that the warning wasn't heeded. I don't know why but with Geoff's cover, it feels like he's saying that there's still hope if we just try. The good and the bad. The highs and the lows. It's a part of life but if we just try, we might be able to get through this. But that's just what I got from it. His low notes are just magical though. It's like you're sinking into a nice plush chair and just getting surrounded by comfort. It's great, I love it. 😎👍
I loved the chord progression that you focused on in the fourth verse. I have noticed this popping up from time to time in his compositions (see Blackbird and Way Down).
I LOVE your breakdowns SO MUCH! You amp up my enjoyment and appreciation of these works of musical magic every time. Thank you Elizabeth. You are awesome indeed.
So. I am old enough to really know the original (love it), have heard Disturbed's (Very cool), and now this. Wow. I don't know any other versions of this, but the three listed are pretty much all I need. (That said, I can think of a few folks I LOVE to hear do this song!) Geoff is simply an astounding vocalist to me. Relaxed me so much.... btw- "Stupid low" 🤣 Happy Tuesday!
So glad you made it to this one so quickly! I've been in love with it ever since it dropped to Patreon. There are a million covers of this song, but it's pretty safe to say that Geoff made this his own. Beautiful and moving.
Gorgeous! I often say that S&G's version of this was a lament, Disturbed's version; a call to arms, and this version is incredibly uplifting! Amazing how the different renditions can also highlight subtle spins on the meaning of words. Thank you. 😊
I paused this right after you said Geoff was singing "sound of silence", because 1) I had no idea, and 2) I want to blind react with you❣️ I'm SO excited about this song!
It is an incredible experience to listen to Geoff and his arrangements. Considering how low he can go (ie Halo and Way Down) to his high register like in Voiceplay's Enemy feat alexa, as well as his solo cover of The Beatles song "Blackbird", he is a true vocal range master.
Thank you for going in deep. You were the only reactor to pick up and look at the interesting sounds in the background that piqued my imagination the first time I heard it. And those luscious jazz chords. Ooooohhhhhh ❤
I hadn't heard it before. Wow. Feels like I've now heard 3 different versions of the same lyrics, and each performance highlights a very different set of emotions. Incredible. Here I got huge vibes of: "It can be awkward to break the silence. But it will be worth it, you have something great to share." While the others felt like they were more focused on the listening part of it.
I would highly recommend Leonard Cohen's "Halleleujah" My favorite is Live in London. It was toward the end of his life and you can just feel the pain of his long life in the song. He was the original writer, but of course decades before. It's truly beautiful and emotional.
@@deeteenw I also love 'everybody knows.' It was the first song of his that I'd ever heard, in a movie called 'Pump up the Volume,' which was really fun to watch. Just as dark and sexy as you'd hope a Leonard Cohen song to be.
@@abbienormals1669 my first Leonard Cohen song was Suzanne, sung by Judy Collins. His version is much different ; just as beautiful, but a lot darker.
I could totally see this being a part of a soundtrack for a movie, but the way this cover hits me emotionally I think that I might end up crying at that part of the movie, because the more I listen to this cover I can't help by feel like it is not just the sound of silence, but the sound of loneliness.
Please review “the Caruso of rock” Roy Orbison. I’d suggest Running Scared from the Black and White concert. He was called the greatest singer in the world by Elvis, Springsteen, Jeff Lynn, and dozens of others. Rolling Stone said audiences would let out an audible gasp when they first heard his voice. He received 14 curtain calls when he opened for the Beatles.
You and maybe two other reactors have taught me a lot about singing. Your technical explanations and its affect on us has brought me a new appreciation for bands and songs I've heard so often. It is super educational. And you're so open about different music. Your background is so different from many of the metal reactions you do. But your vast knowledge has made me respect many known and loved musicians even more. Just great to learn something new about something I thought I knew. 🙂
Castellucci (seemingly) has it all...I actually got reverb on my eardrums ! I know individuals who have been buried shallower than his basal range....just, wow !
I've loved this song my whole life. My Favorite line : People writing songs that voices never share ... My interpretation of that line has changed the older I've gotten. What resonates for me now (age 57) is How each and everyone of us is doing that with the choices we make in our lives. Our Life is a song. How much do we share it? I believe that even the mistakes make our Song sweeter in the end. Maybe all that is just an old fart facing the shortening years? maybe. I guess you'd have to ask the people I shared it with. Thanks for Teaching
Very nice! That rumbling sound.. At first, I wondered if there was an earthquake or if someone was doing something weird upstairs. It is beautiful and also has a few surprises, which I love. (I like to be surprised by music) Thank you, again!
Wow such an amazing cover by Geoff, and pretty awesome to hear his range from the low notes to the high notes. And as always Elizabeth, you are so delightful in your way of being in your videos. You are always in such a good mood, with your smiling and laughing, and when you are talking about the vocal folds going waka waka, it always cracks me up, because it makes me think of the Shakira song Waka Waka. :)
Fred, many of us do. It only takes one note for Geoff to turn many of us devoted fans into giggling, quivering fan-girls thay cannot form a coherent sentence. His voice is mesmerizing.
My favorite cover is by Peter Hollens and Tim Foust collaboration. If you haven't checked it out yet - you should as it's amazing and the only cover that literally uses silence at the very end to finish the song. But this one from Geoff has taken the crown from that video and now reigns as my all time favorite! (I still love Peter's version though!)
Geoff's voice can shake your world. I encourage everyone, if possible, to join the premieres on this channel. Each Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 11 AM EDT. Hope to see you there for engaging chat.
Wow, so many negative comments on here! There’s no need for it, especially the rude ones! If you don’t like it, don’t comment on it and move on to something you do appreciate. Nobody is making you listen and then give disrespectful feedback. Geez…
I felt a ribbon of celebration that underneath the higher notes a ribbon of his deep notes appear that makes the end a little melancholy to me. The whole piece is phenomenal. Thanks for “breaking the bread” with this song. He is so , okay here goes, charismatic!
Thanks for sharing with your audience Elizabeth! I'm forever grateful that you're interested in my little corner of the world. Cheers!

The question I have is, what is Pentatonix's version? Is their version the acceptance of the grief? or is it the Joy of silence?

You should listen to Pentatonix version. Until this cover, it was my favorite.
So glad you made it to this one so quickly! I've been in love with it ever since it dropped to Patreon. There are a million covers of this song, but it's pretty safe to say that Geoff made this his own. Beautiful and moving.
This song holds a lot of attachment for me and Geoff's cover is by far the best I've ever heard.
Gorgeous! I often say that S&G's version of this was a lament, Disturbed's version; a call to arms, and this version is incredibly uplifting! Amazing how the different renditions can also highlight subtle spins on the meaning of words.
Thank you. 😊
Glad you like it!
I paused this right after you said Geoff was singing "sound of silence", because 1) I had no idea, and 2) I want to blind react with you❣️ I'm SO excited about this song!
Always learning new things when you host a reaction Elizabeth. Thank you !
Great reaction! You always think of things I never would have imagined without your analysis! Bravo!
Several points in there, especially that chord cluster made me stop doing dishes and rewind
Holy crud just wow his voice on this is so hauntingly beautiful just wow
It is an incredible experience to listen to Geoff and his arrangements. Considering how low he can go (ie Halo and Way Down) to his high register like in Voiceplay's Enemy feat alexa, as well as his solo cover of The Beatles song "Blackbird", he is a true vocal range master.
Thank you for going in deep. You were the only reactor to pick up and look at the interesting sounds in the background that piqued my imagination the first time I heard it. And those luscious jazz chords. Ooooohhhhhh ❤
Awesome reaction Elizabeth.
I'm on all 3 patreons of Voiceplay, Geoff and Pattycake Productions. And I love it. So awesome.
This is awesome and so are you! Thank you for your positive approach to al this!
How about "You want it darker"? I'm in love with it since I heard it on the outro of that "American Gods" episode.
This is going to be so interesting with his voice! I would suspect it will be awesome!
Good Lord, a lot of people in the notes clicked on this video just to ignore the song under discussion and ask for something else.
YES I get to watch one of my favorite singers have my favorite reactor/musical breakdown do a video! This is exciting for me.
Thanks for spotlighting Geoff's creativity! We can't get enough!
I could totally see this being a part of a soundtrack for a movie, but the way this cover hits me emotionally I think that I might end up crying at that part of the movie, because the more I listen to this cover I can't help by feel like it is not just the sound of silence, but the sound of loneliness.
I love hearing you break down geoff's voice. He is definitely a unicorn in the voice world. You should drop a cover of a song that is your favorite.
Omg.... i couldnt keep my eyes dry.. holy cow thats the absolute best version of this song ever imo brings so much emotion with his deep voice. WOW!!
You and Geoff, amazing both of you
Please review “the Caruso of rock” Roy Orbison.
Love his version of this beautiful song. 😊
The sound kind of like a creaking door opening is just before Geoff sings "Hello darkness, my old friend" so perhaps it was darkness entering.
Geoff's version is mesmerizing, dark and brilliant, all at the same time!
I can't wait to hear your opinion!
OH MY GOSH!!!! I'm seriously having an eargasm!!!! The harmonies are sick!!!
I'm glad you found this. As soon as I heard it I knew you would love it. I just wasn't sure how to send it to you
It's funny... You look like your going to have a voice-gasm
Absolutely incredible!
Eli is a master at subtle lighting.
Such an amazing voice!
The cover I never knew I needed so much. Now I want a Simon and Garfunkel, Disturbed and Geoff mashup. I feel like that would sound so amazing
The #1 thing I've learned from all of the Charismatic Voice videos is my vocal chords laugh in Fozzy Bear all day long. Wakawakawaka!
I love your videos. Seeing you so happy just listening to the music makes me happy in a way.
He is a human scale! Delightful on the ears.
Wow, so many negative comments on here! There’s no need for it, especially the rude ones! If you don’t like it, don’t comment on it and move on to something you do appreciate. Nobody is making you listen and then give disrespectful feedback. Geez…
thank you for introducing me to this artist, and this version of this song. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ok, the Eb1 is impressive but what is he hitting in chest right before that. Such a clear effortless note. That blew me away
I felt a ribbon of celebration that underneath the higher notes a ribbon of his deep notes appear that makes the end a little melancholy to me. The whole piece is phenomenal. Thanks for “breaking the bread” with this song. He is so , okay here goes, charismatic!
