Great reaction. This is my favorite cover of the song. He puts so much effort into each cover. You can feel the passion and see his dedication in each he does.
I'd bet that you would love his version of Shenandoah. Look up a video of Geoff and Kathy talking about her profound deafness that occurred shortly after they married. They had both been working as performers at Disney and Universal. It's a beautiful video with some humor and you'll find out lots about them.
I try to introduce them to the good stuff from "back in the day"...she's more receptive to it than the boys. Killian loves anything Post Malone. He's pretty good, but I don't like a lot of it. I try...LOL!
Damn! We are on a Geoff/VoicePlay binge this week! Not that I am compaining. More please...and thank you for the great reaction (and a wink back at Mini Relistic!).😉
Geoff's interpretation of this song is nothing short of brilliant. When you hear his arrangements it's clear that he gives a lot of thought toward the lyrics and intent of the song, as well the original treatment. It's unfortunate that Kathy, Geoff's wife, has both severe hearing loss and a condition which causes her to perceive a slightly different pitch in each ear. Geoff has done a video about this on his channel. It does feel like a bit of an injustice, especially considering Kathy's own musical background (a lot of that with Geoff). But she is still so supportive, and both VoicePlay and Geoff himself would struggle a lot more as artists without her hard work as their production manager. Behind the scenes, she is responsible for so much- sourcing costumes and proprs, assisting with video set building, tear down, camera operation, and more.
Thanks for this reaction with you both. I enjoy Geoff's "Sound of Silence." It's really tragic that Geoff's wife, Kathy, cannot enjoy listening to music. Not only does she have profound hearing loss, but even with her hearing aids she has a rare condition that causes her to hear a different pitch in each ear. Geoff has remarked that Kathy really can't enjoy music because of that dissonance. I cannot imagine being surrounded by fantastic singers and not being able to enjoy their music, especially since she was once a singer herself. She is still an integral part of VoicePlay's and Geoff's work.
I had an English teacher in college who had gone completely deaf in her 30s, first in one ear while preparing to go on sabbatical and then in the other ear while in Europe. She told the class about it (including going to the airport trying to hear the jets taking off directly overhead) as an “excuse” for the way she talked, although her speech seemed more influenced by her being from New York than by her hearing loss. And I say that as an honorary member of the Deaf Community. I was taking ASL classes at the time, and my ASL teacher was my English teacher’s interpreter. When he left after the ASL class was canceled for not having enough students, I interpreted for her for about a year. Then there was my 25-year marriage to a deaf woman. The saddest part for my teacher was that she LOVED the opera, but couldn’t enjoy it anymore.
@@DennisKovacich Geoff and Kathy posted a video on his channel about 2.5 years ago, "Hearing Loss (A True Story)," about Kathy's hearing loss. They hadn't been married long when she lost her hearing. She was probably around 30 at that time. So sad for anyone to experience that loss, but especially in the young. For music to be such a huge part of their lives and for Kathy to lose the enjoyment of music adds another layer.
As another commenter said his wife suffers hearing loss. They actually made a video about it and it's posted on his channel, wonderfully warm and humorous stuff and very informative. Really enjoying your reactions with your daughter.
If you haven't seen it, definitely react to a few of Voiceplays shorts, particularly River, Surface Pressure, Critical role and definitely Peaches (you'll know why). Quite fun to do a few shorts which will result in a similar length video to one main song.
🦹🍁🦹🍁🦹🍁 .. you can not go wrong with Geoff and a great song. He really is so so so impressive. You are teaching your daughter the things about music that most young people will never understand. I am so glad to see her , and you , enthralled by a true musician who is blessed with so much talent. Keep them coming please. 🍰🍰🍰🍰
So so wonderful that you are exposing Phoenix to such great artists on your channel. You are well aware of what the MSM industry is offering our children and the current generations, so let me say you are a wonderful Mom with a very smart daughter who seems to "get it". Need more parents like you who expose their children to the wonderful artists available to us all and do not just ignore what is happening and the crap being offered up to these young minds. Kudos to you Mrs. R. !!!!
Thanks so much for that lovely comment. I try my best... she's a bright light in my life and very aware of the trash out there. I'm blessed that she's nothing like I was at 16 😄
The "He plays piano you know" at the beginning had me laughing, cause my hubby asked when we watched this video: "God damn it, he plays piano TOO? Is there something this dude CAN'T do?" 😂 I answered: " I don't know! He sings like an angel or a demon (depends on the song), flexes up and down his range so quickly, plays piano/harmonica and a little guitar, cooks like a chef, he's an amazing arranger, a down to earth humble guy plus a great and loving husband and father" 😅🤷🏻♀️ My husband: "He couldn't have left some talent for us, no?" 😂🙈 P.S. Geoff's wife has a profound hearing loss, he made a video with her about that topic on his channel 😢 She had to stop her own singing career cause of that and I can only imagine how terrible it is to have a husband with such a gorgeous voice and only be able to hear him with your hearing aids 😔
That's the way I feel! Like, "hey, you wanna leave something for the rest of us?" Ha ha! Yes, I had forgotten about Kathy's hearing loss. I didn't realize it was so profound...and so tragic that she can't hear the art that he makes with is voice! I wonder if she lost it before she met him?
This is my second favourite version of this song... Disturbed totally own the top step on the podium as far as I'm concerned... Phoenix, do you know Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game "? Geoff takes it to a totally different level! And as for you Mrs R, you definitely haven't failed as a parent! It's great to see to see someone so young appreciating music from back in the day, and that's down to you! ❤😊
@@MrsRealistic There's a video about it on Geoff's channel. She's an awesome lady. Oh, and for some chills and thrills don't forget to check out Geoff's spooky narrations of such stories as The Raven, The Telltale Heart, The Headless Horseman, and more! Not as a reaction, just for your own enjoyment. Me, I love a good audio story with a hot bath and a glass of moscato (muscat).💙
"But my words, like silent raindrops fell, echoed (echoed) in the wells of silence" is the part of the song that sticks out for me every time I hear it - you mentioned it as well, that Geoff changed the chord structure of the song for that phrase. It's the single portion of the song that has some reactors going, "Hmm. Not sure I can go along with that." But to me, it's just one way that Geoff has of making his cover his own, not a carbon copy of every other version of the song that's out there, and he didn't do anything that changed the emotional impact of the song there. As long as the emotional impact and meaning of the song hasn't changed, Geoff can do anything he wants to with it as far as I'm concerned.
I can only imagine how hard it has to be fore Kathy not being able to fully enjoy hearing Geoff and the others sing. But she has mentioned she doesn't need to worry about finding Geoff, she can just feels where he is and followed the vibrations. What's even sader is she used to be a performer herself and now refuses to sing, at least in public.
