These two are my favorite. They are true analysts, not just enthusiasts.
@@martymiller9802 There are several others that are also analysts, but Jennifer is my favorite not just because of her engaging personality, but more because she demonstrates with her own voice. So many of the others, even ones who are voice coaches, just *describe*.
Peter Barber is also in my top three. He also analyzes technique and style choices. He got a lot more respect from me with his analysis of the "Nessun Dorma" by two of the Home Free guys. He pointed out and *demonstrated* why one of them was quite good, and the other was obviously out of his element.

Layne did the arrangement and Eli the amazing backgrounds. It was filmed, not green screen, but at a studio with immense (Full wall!) LED screens. Unfortunately, the guys were in leather and furs and the air-conditioning was not working.🥵
In My Mother Told Me Eli was a beserker. He obviously has recruited the whole group now. Even Cesar was scary. The makeup and a lot of the costuming is from MMTM. Among their tattoos are runes spelling out VoicePlay.
I really like that J began staring out across the water and came in later like he was returning home to his family of VoicePlay.
The music in the outro is the karaoke track. The percussion and background vocals could be a piece on its own because it’s so gorgeous.
The early part with J on his own may have been filmed later - apparently his flight from Washington to Orlando was 3 hours late, Kathy had to pick him up from the airport - then after this he had to fly back for a wedding!!
Don’t you just love that smug smile just before Geoff bombs us with a ridiculously low note? I also REALLY love that drawn out B0 sub. There are a couple times when he floats up a bit, can’t decide whether it’s a wobble or intentional (seems more likely intentional towards the end because it harmonizes well). But controlling a super-low sub that long can’t be easy.
And don’t you just love the added dimension when J sings with these guys? Something about his voice and his vibe-they just feel complete with him. And his presentation of that rap section-so good.
Cesar-it seems to me he has a very different vocal timbre from song to song-and here from solo to solo. We’ve heard that sweet innocent breathy voice a lot of times, more of a wail in Wicked and the short cover of Crazy, but this is the first time we’ve heard that fierce, throaty, gritty (no better word) sound. And the acting-he usually presents a really mellow, gentle vibe, but here I could imagine him throwing down-and winning, just because he won’t hold back. Seems like he’s just always all in, every song, whatever they need.
Eli-I’m less surprised this time that he’s a convincing, scary Viking and rock god, but still super impressed.
Layne-OMG. He’s just slaying it this year. We’re getting to hear him sing more, he’s crushing the beat-boxing, and his arrangements!
With Cesar, especially, I just keep thinking back to Nothing Else Matters where for the majority of the song he sits so still in one position, barely moving......and then this. He definitely goes all in and compliments the mood of the song no matter what it is. ☺
@@katthor7311 I’ve wondered a few times whether he is holding back more than he would like. As if he’s dying to bust a move or something but can’t because it wouldn’t work in the overall production. I have no idea how old he is, but I get a sense of youthful exuberance. LOL.
@@lkayh he is 33 as of one month ago, but he definitely has this joyful exuberance that is just fantastic.
@@lkayh I definitely agree about Cesar. He's a much better actor than most of Voiceplay's videos ask for. I loved his gritty (yet, at the end, eternally sassy) viking - comes to remind us not to typecast them 😅
@@reallollabunny Any of them. Eli normally comes off really chill-as do Geoff and Layne, but both of them can be fierce as well. J, too.
Geoff hits a low note - Jen starts to giggle 😄 and immediately I'm thinking that Jen and The Charismatic Voice should do a joint reaction and analysis to a VoicePlay or Geoff Castellucci song - it would be one big giggle-feast ❤

OMG I am SO in for the giggle fest!
I usually pick a favorite from each video but there was NO way to do that this time. Layne's killer arrangement and percussion, Cesar channeling his inner warrior, Eli the rock god and his amazing technical work on this video, J rapping his heart out, and Geoff the earthquake god with THREE B0s, the first one lasting 15 seconds! VoicePlay+Viking=EPIC! Even Miracle of Sound agrees--they reached out to VP and gave them a 10 out of 10 for their cover of this Assassin's Creed theme. I've been a fan a long time, but I still forget sometimes they're a cappella. Man, I love these guys!
Where’s the third B0 at?
1 ) I love how they have re-created their characters from "My Mother Told Me".
2 ) This is the second most intimidating Cesar has been, second to "Hoist the Colors"
3 ) I still say J None's voice has matured tremendously, with a lot more character and power than he had when he was a regular. His time apart has done him well.
Geoff’s sustained B0 sub is the ultimate flex.
This one is just outstanding. I have to say that Layne sneaks stuff in. The weird noises and the fills, caught them all. But I have to remind myself EVERY TIME, that when J None goes crashing through that wooden door and creaks as it shuts behind him - that's Layne. And when I say every time, I have to have watched this 100 times since it came out on Patreon.
All the costumes and "tattoos" are replicated from My Mother Told Me.

I love the costuming, makeup that set this up. And then the intensity with great diction just starts the goosebumps! What a production with amazing voices-love these guys!!
Cesar was my favorite in this one, he really got into that viking role 😂 and viking war horn geoff is back at it and better than ever

I knew you were going to love this song and video!! They out do themselves every time! I cannot stop watching this, it is amazing!! That first B0 Geoff hits lasts for 15 seconds!! Then Eli has become the Asgardian god of rock, Layne is a beatboxing god, Cesar has become a Berserker, and J None has shown us the rap indeed belongs in acapella! Great reaction!

It's the song Miracle of Sound made for the video game Assassin's Creed Valhalla. The J-None solo near the end was added by Voiceplay. Great reaction and analysis as always Jen 😊And it is a song about Vikings, hence the 'anger' in Cesar's voice and the high testosterone levels, lol.
Jennifer! Well I knew I'd be late this time. Wow ... LOTS of chances for low note practice here! You did take the bait a couple of times I noticed. 😁 I feared for your mic a few times when you mimicked those fierce gestures. 😅 And I saw what you did there at 15:25, talking about the "bell effect" in the music and concurrently popping the little notification bell reminder on the screen. I decided to watch all reactors to this song. The ones that know more about music stop most often, sometimes on each phrase. This is masterful. To me, Cesar was the star. One of his phrases sends chills down me every time I hear it. Geoff's long B0 at the beginning was insane.
I really love the line where he’s gritty and ends the line with plucks the strings of destiny. There’s just something about the way he sings destiny that gives me the shivers.

I’m wondering if you’d classify some of Cesar’s notes as gritty; it does feel like it to me but I’m no expert. Definitely felt the berserker in him for this one. It feels like he really showed something different.

Hey Jen, you referrenced some of the mouth placements of Geoff on his lowest notes on this song... specifically those side/cheek pulls. You'll catch this technique with Tim Foust too. Check out the similarity between their mouth placement when Tim sings the lowest verse on Folsom Prison Blues and Geoff's side smile.

This cover really gets your blood pumping. I ended wanting to work out or something. This would be great to have at a gym on repeat. I loved that they sped up the tempo, the original is a tad slower.
The guys are wearing the same face paint and similar if not the same clothing as in My Mother Told Me. Cesar wasn't in that video but he's wearing the same hooded cloak Jose Rosario had in the previous video. This one is more them preparing for battle, working themselves into berserker mode, especially Cesar and Eli.

Something I noticed with Eli's high solo. He's maintaining the sound by really widening and focusing on vowel shapes. Enough diction to let us understand what he's saying but those vowels are his focus, nice and open and supported, letting those notes ring clear.
I’ve always thought of Valhalla as the Vikings’ heaven but it’s much more intricate than that:
“It is described as a majestic hall located in Asgard and presided over by the god Odin. Half of those who die in combat enter Valhalla, while the other half are chosen by the goddess Freyja to reside in Fólkvangr. The masses of those killed in combat (known as the Einherjar) along with various legendary Germanic heroes and kings, live in Valhalla until Ragnarök when they will march out of its many doors to fight in aid of Odin against the jötnar.”
So the warriors are preparing for battle knowing they may be slain but offered rewards in the afterlife.

Amazing as always, my dear!!! I'm sure it's already well on your radar, but I have to let you know about Geoff Castellucci's "Man of Constant Sorrow" that dropped yesterday and cannot WAIT to see your analysis!!
All of them were incredible, but I especially loved 'fierce Cesar'! He doesn't get a chance to show his power that often. And even Layne managed to add some grit to his usually sweet, mellow tone during his solo! Eli's verse a couple octaves over everyone else just awed (someone said he was hitting an F5 on the last chord). And of course, Geoff ... well, he Geoffed. Nuff said.
Eli was hitting an F#5 on the last chord (Considering the arrangement is in B minor). It's layered over his B4, so you actually hear two Eli's on the last chord 😄
The absolutely most common uttering from any reactors I've seen to this: 'I wasn't expecting this!' as JNone starts rapping. No exception here, Jen 😄

This actually made having a cold more enjoyable this weekend, because I was _almost_ able to sing along with Geoff's non-sub parts. I say "almost" because I could still only hit G1 rather than F#1, but that's lower than I can usually get with any accuracy or body to the sound. I'm trying to follow Tim's advice to focus on my higher end, but Geoff keeps sucking me in...

Definitely one of the more creative covers I've heard. I rate it 10 raised alehorns out of 10 ). The air conditioner wasn't working in the studio they were recording in. They were sweating so much with those heavy costumes they were wearing. That is true dedication. I love Cesar cutting loose. Layne is the best ever. Geoff going subterranean. Eli the rock God. I usually love J. None but not the rap.
You described his voice as angry but seemed to be looking for another word. I think DRIVEN would be appropriate as the entire song is about heading to war.

They were all channeling their inner warriors to be sure, but Cesar was definitely veering toward berserker. And Geoff was channeling his inner God of (Bass) Thunder.

Jen, love your channel, great breakdowns, 1 note: compression is your friend. You seem to be accidently overdriving your mic, give yourself some headroom, and use your eq, your audio will thank you, as will your audience. Keep up the great work!

When you are thinking about the difference between Geoff’s chest voice and sub-harmonics look over at what Peter Barber’s reaction. He focuses a lot on Geoff every time. He says that the first F#1 is actually his chest voice, and one of his first in chest. 5:54

Are you going out later to slay a dragon? I always enjoy your videos Jenn. You are very entertaining. Here's an idea for a video somewhere down the road, "If Only" by Hiss, Alexinho, River and Colaps. It's a very cool performance by 4 beatboxers that go beyond what one might think. Do the official video. Even if you don't want to do a video on that, check it out on your own sometime, it's great. Have a great day and thanks for your efforts making these videos.
