One of my favorites. Adam Rupp masterfully arranged this piece.. I just saw the live twice this month and is pure joy to hear. The twinkle of Austin’s high notes and chest grabbing growls Tim gives are earth shakingly perfect. So many parts are just undefinable. I loved your reaction to this song.
This is one of my favorites, too. "Don't hear a lot of bassy stuff in Christmas music." Not many groups that sing Christmas music have a Tim Foust. 😉
The great bass Bing Crosby comes to mind (& his duet with David Bowie)
This arrangement is by Adam Rupp. I wish he would do more. Juicy chords and rhythms galore.
I think this is one of the most favorite songs for many Home Fries. It is a complex arrangement and thus there is so much going on in the background vocals and harmonies. It truly is a feast for the ears. Thanks for your reaction and Merry Christmas!
I love this arrangement. This video was shot in the Ice Castle in Minnesnowta that year. I believe it was in Eden Prairie that year. We usually have an ice palace every year, depending on the weather, and they are done in different areas of "the cities".
Unfortunate with the warm weather here in Minnesota this winter the castle has been cancelled 😢
This is my very favorite Home Free Christmas song! It’s so complex that I hear new little details every time I listen. Thanks, Peter!
I always learn something when I come into your videos, which is getting more and more difficult to do as I listen to yourself, Jen, and a few other vocal teachers/performers react and analyze the music that I love. Thank you for all your hard work, Peter, and for taking the time to come hang out with us during quite a number of the premieres as well.
For me one of the best arranged songs, or perhaps the best, of Home Free. So impressive! The phenomenal beatboxing/vocal percussion , the overwhelming bass(notes), the great harmonies, the sound effects, colors, etc. in such a beautiful but cold scenery. I could listen and watch this all the time. A lot happens, but not that it is disturbing. Just amazing.
So excited you're finally doing this one. It's my 100% favorite of theirs (Christmas or otherwise). It's interesting and clean, and just so beautiful, with a brilliant Adam Rupp arrangement, just wow. I also love following Tim's bassline after he's done soloing. I bet it would be pretty fun to sing. Thanks for reacting to this!
They've been doing this live. I was lucky enough to go to one of their Christmas concerts this month. It sounded great live as well.
Tim's low "growl" sounds more like "Dragon growl" to me.🐉🐉 Love it !! Austin's higher notes lend an angelic ringing sound to the song that is so beautiful. I love it when Tim and Austin go opposite directions and just seems to "Split" the sound barrier. The Angel and the Dragon.😆😆 Thanks again for a very learning experience and breakdown of one of my favorite Christmas songs and a favorite from HF. Have a Merry Christmas, Peter.
I'd heard Tim & Austin described as the yin and yang of singing but I love your juxtaposition of the "angel and the dragon"! They have 2 duets on Austin's channel ("My Maria" and "What's it to You" and both are terrific!).
Why do you think we dragons call Tim our Lord!
It's crazy how it sounds surprisingly the same when they do this live. It's incredible. Adam Rupp is an instrumentalist by training and you can definitely hear how that affects this arrangement.
Always enjoy your reactions Peter! I was able to see them in Minnesota a couple of weeks ago for their holiday concert, and they did this song. Fabulous, and Tim’s bass rattled the room😅😊. They were fantastic live!!
I was there as well
The crazy thing about this song is that even though in this video it is produced to perfection, hearing it live, it still sounds as good. It's crazy how they can do that. According to legend (read that as internet stories) this is such a complex arrangement that at first the guys were resistant to doing it live. Not sure if that is true or not. But as I have heard it live myself, they obviously have embraced it as one of their most beloved Christmas songs. I can really get lost in listening to the intricacies of it.
Yes, that is true. They would not do it live at first because it didn't live up to the quality of the recording. They will not perform any song live if it isn't up to full standard. When Adam started using a looper, then they could do it live. It is still ALL LIVE as Adam sets the looper live...(meaning not prerecorded into the looper)
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS, PETER ! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
This was my first introduction to Home Free, in around 2017. I listened to it and was completely overwhelmed by the complexity of the arrangement. It took several listens before I could really appreciate what they produced. I then didn't find them again until late 2020, and I realized what I had been missing out on.
Amazing Peter!!! I've listened to their song a lot and still learned something from your analysis. So now I can appreciate it even more as you say! Thank you so much. ❤❤
The Ice Castle in the video is in the area around Minneapolis/St. Paul. Adam says in the outro that it moves around every year.
This Christmas tune is decades older than “We are the World”, Peter. It was Bing Crosby that recorded this in ‘62 or ‘63 and it became a huge success and was heard in many TV shows and films since.
Bing has a lovely low voice, usually in the baritone register, but he took it down to the cellar now and again, so you might enjoy the original recording. Another fine analysis! 🙏
I was checking comments to make sure someone set this young pup straight on this score! (J/K, Peter, lol. Mostly.)
The Whitney Houston version is one that gets a lot of airplay around christmas, at least where I live 😊
@@olabergvall3154 Yes, Whitney’s was released just after the “We Are The World”, in ‘87, and is a lovely rendition!
Yes! Bing Cosby the legend breathing life into original Christmas songs that he recorded! Remember listening to him every Christmas season with my family! One of our “household staples” for the holiday season! ❤
Simply adore your analysis of HF videos. Enjoy hearing from a music professional!!
HF has the best sound system and sound engineers so it sounds great and feels traumatic LOL at the live shows. I've felt him way up in the cheap seats because they really do have the best crew making sure the power is there when it's needed.
I adore this HF video and I love how you noticed every little detail that makes it so special. Most reactors don't even notice Austin doing some 'beatboxing'. Really enjoyed your reaction to this one. Thank you.
Well, the group started out in Minnesota. At this time I believe they were still in the area. Due to the weather being so cold up there they do a ice castle thing in different towns. It was a great place to shoot a Christmas Song Video!
This analysis was great. I love learning new stuff from you.
This is one of their best Christmas song. Your reactions and analysis are always great and I really enjoy them Peter
Thanks for the analysis. I have always loved this arrangement and I’m glad you did too
These guys just do not miss. For me, they have the best harmonies. You are going to have to check out CHRISTMAS IN LA. ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL.
Lovely analysis. All the guys are amazing, Chris Rupp doesn't get enough credit, he has a wonderful voice, great vocal range, is a talented arranger and so much more.
@PeterBarber You're right about the notes from We Are the World. It's in one of the lines of the verses. The rhythm is different, but the notes are basically the same as in Do You Hear What I Hear.
I was never fond of this song until Adam Rupp's arrangement and beatboxing & Home Free's rendition of it. The channel 'Refried Home Fries' just posted a y/t of them singing it at a concert a few days ago (I love the live videos). BTW, Tim goes much lower in the live videos - he's broken sound systems a couple of times (Adam did so in a recent live video). Thanks for playing this & your comments.
They almost didn´t do this one because they were afraid that Adams [ amazing beautiful fantastic etc.etc.ect ] complex arrangement meant they couldn´t do it live i´m so greatful they did it much love and respect from Denmark 🥰🥰
You should react to What Child Is This by them, it is one of their best Christmas covers
Your analysis is very informative as usual. I recently heard them sing this live recently. It was spectacular and the highlight of the whole show.
An impressed Peter is always a pleasure to watch. Thank you for your wisdom, it was pretty interesting!
Chris talked about this when he reacted to it: when you were debating when Tim hit his second E1, the four vocalists actually doing the same phrase in four different octaves. Tim starts at an E1 growl (layered with it one octave up, he doesn't complete the "I say" in the first octave, but he does in live performances), Chris starts at E2 two beats later, Rob at E3, and Austin at E4 to cover five octaves in nine beats.
Easily one of their best arrangements, and it's crazier to hear it live.
So excited that finally he will hear this song
I love this group! My 1st a capella group was Straight No Chaser & Home Free was recommended when I was watching SNC videos. My 1st HF video was O Holy Night and I've loved them ever since! They are so talented, down home & personable. I just love them! ❤ 😊
I recommend checking out The Blenders. They are Darren Rust’s group. He is Home Free’s producer. Their version of O Holy Night is wonderful. These days they mostly sing with a backing band, but still do some acapella. Also, they only do Christmas shows these days as they’ve been around for 30+ years.
The Blenders (live) - O Holy Night ruclips.net/video/pq9jX2KVSBU/видео.htmlsi=IKAzVpBuoc5XUinV
Perhaps my favorite A capella rendition of a song to date.
Definitely learned many new things from your commentary. Many thanks!
This is favorite. Super creative arrangement
Great reaction. I really enjoyed your analysis. When you are searching for the key on a keyboard, I appreciate it. Don't feel like you're dragging it out. Those of us who follow these kinds of reactions love it. If I wanted another reactor just saying, "OH, THEY"RE AMAZING!". (we know that), we'd just do it ourselves. At least, that is my opinion. (My husband sings tenor in a concert chorale and we have participated in live music for many decades.) We appreciate actual analysis of what's happening vocally. So thank you!
Arranged by Adam (Rupp) who is rather obviously a whole lot more than a beat boxer. I think that this particular song really does show off each person's strong points. This is also my personal favorite out of their entire catalogue.
THANKS FOR THE ANALYSIS! CHEERS!!
Thank you! I love analysis where I learn things! Austin’s “guitar licks”, where he covers his mouth, are added to by opening and closing his hands over his mouth. It adds a sound like a Wawa pedal on an electric guitar. Fun. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!
My favorite version of this song!!!! Adam Rupp did an amazing arrangement! Great breakdown! Tim can hit the E1 a number of ways including chest but the growl made a sound almost like a pipe organ which sounded a lot cooler in this one! Great breakdown! Low bass Kenneth!
If you didn’t know, Tim can actually hit an F1 chest at every live show they do when they perform Folsom prison. He has a lower chest range than you probably think
I suspect Peter knows Tim's voice even better than we do. 😂
Hi already know that, you're to late. Hahahah, they are friends. So shut up
@@winstonbaculioofficial5010disrespectful twat
Winston, you should take your own advice if you're going to be a jerk!
Peter needs to see them live. ❤❤
Adam's arrangement is fantastic. Convoluted in the best ways.
Chris, at that point anyway, was a baritone. He has worked on his range and his cover of Amazing Grace starts out remarkably low. It startled me the first time I heard it.
It's always interesting to hear you break things down, but I believe this is the first time I've seen you give up on deciphering a chord! HF so often has unexpected chord progressions, suspensions, and just plain "What? Play that again!" moments.
Within the last year, between Tim and fairy voice mother yt channel, I unlocked a talent I didn’t know I had reaching way lower bass notes than I thought possible. Not f1 or g1 but ok on the rest of Tim’s stuff. Enjoying the exploration of this new discovery
Despite the rest of the lads not being super pumped given the complexity, Adam Rupp deserves some kind of award for creating this arrangement from a drastically less interesting original imho! The walking bassline is great, some chewy chord choices, the 4 octaves in 4 seconds round thing is a fun flex, Austin's quacky Strat-no-caster funk guitar line deserves a shout, & that Stevie Wonder -esque twist toward the end is #ChefsKiss Just *so* satisfying all round. Definitely one of my favourite Home Free productions. :)
This song is amazing live
Adam Rupp is to be congratulated for such a fine arrangement. Those years of studying music theory when he took his performance degree in trumpet paid off!
The Ice Castel moves every year it's built new at a new location it was freaking Cold the night they filmed this. poor Tim. Chris is a Baritone with tenor and Bass capabilities he just never felt he was consistent in his bass range. I think he's worked that out with 7th Ave and Cypress Fyre
This complex arrangement combined with the stunning video creates magic. I’m always interested to hear your analysis of Home Free. This is my absolute favorite version of this song.
This is amazing live too. I was in front row behind row of speakers, and Tim sounds like a subwoofer. Great reaction
Yes, Chris is Adam’s brother. Chris, Adam and another friend started the group in college, back in 2000.
I love this beautiful arrangement and performance of this song so much. Impossible to pick a favourite by Home Free but this one would be up there. Interesting to hear your thoughts.
Before the growl, you can hear Tim go up with the tenors. Then drops several octaves to the growl.
All the members of this group are amazing, but Rob is one of the most beautiful tenors I have ever heard. His sound is like butter and pure. Just so yummy to listen to.
I've been hoping you would do this one. It is one of my top Home Free songs.
I love this version. ❤ And Tim's low notes are just gold.
Thanks Peter!!! Awesome! 2023 has been a great year. Always the Bestest. Happy Holidays and a VERY Merry CHRISTmas to you and yours! Make memories! Be Safe
Thank you for your awesome reaction! Chris is a tenor but can sing in baritone range when needed during live performances. Home Free live version very close to the studio recording amazing! Adam’s phenomenal arrangement, my favorite Home Free cover! I love that favorite tenors Adam and Chris are highlighted, beautiful! Merry Christmas Peter!
This is my fav Xmas song these guys just nailed this!! Luv the reaction! 🤗
I was afraid Tim's voice was going to rumble destroy the ice castle.
Yaaaaas! I've been waiting for this foreverrrrr!!!
The song was written in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Used at Christmas time since.
really enjoyed this....glad you caught Tim's walkdown (actually, you really don't miss much and that's why I watch). When they did the "listen to what I say" with Tim, Chris, Rob and Austin (at 24:46) , they each came in an octave apart...Tim started in the sub-basement, Chris up 8, Rob up another 8 and then Austin on the roof. Very, very nice. Thanks for the always informative and entertaining video.
Learned a lot Thanks Peter !
I just watched this - so enjoyably interesting. You made the dissection fun.😊
My absolute favorite Home Free song. Best arrangement of any Christmas song, ever. I think that when you thought Chris was doing the bass while Tim was leading, it was actually a doubletrack of Tim. Chris says that in live performances he would take the bass, but for the studio version they would doubletrack because - well, Tim.
A favorite reaction to a favorite arrangement by my favorite a cappella group! I always enjoy your savvy explanations of exactly what's going on. This arrangement by Adam Rupp is particularly complex and displays the depth and breadth of his musicality. I've been listening to it for years, and never tire of it. Thanks for shining a light on it!
Great reaction Peter. ❤ Merry Christmas.
I'm sure they filmed this in MN. I know they have something like that every year here in MN
Love the "Elizabeth" mug!!
Absolutely loved your analysis! This is my favorite Home Free song of all time!
Another great R&A. This may become my 3rd favorite Christmas song - behind TBG's "All I Want for Christmas" of course, and Casper's "We Won't Let Santa Go Flat".
This song is so beautiful and it was written in 1962! I love this!
Jennifer will want to hear that anyone can do those octave 1 growls.
Watch Chris Rupp's reaction to this. Tells all about weather, etc.
Ive seen them live abd Tim sounds like this without processing.
Also Austin has a natural high and I doubt thats a falsetto. Check the new video by them, Austin brings it.
Sir Hairless just reacted to his. He has a great breakdown of that "Goodness and Light" chord you were wondering about. It's... complex.
Happy holidays! This is absolutely my favourite Christmas carol- it's just so dang good and different!
Amazing analysis of this song Adam Rupp is mostly responsible for Home Free even existing very early on there were times Chris wanted to quit but Adam talked Chris out of it this arrangement by Adam showcases the talent of the entire group including Darren Rust their producer who records their songs.
My fav! Stunning! Adam's arrangement is incredible
❤🤠😍 Great reaction.
This song was written long before We Are The World. It was written back in 1962 and was actually a Christmas song about the Cuban Missile Crisis! There was an ubiquitous choral arrangement of it going around in the 70's, and every school choir was forced to do it. I personally hated this song until I heard two versions of it: For King and Country's version and Home Free's version. I think Home Free's rendition is probably my favorite.
I always come away from your analysis video with alot more knowlege and enyoyment. This is right at the top of my Home Free favorites !! I have seen this performed live at their Christmas show 3 times and it sounds Amazing !! Can't wait for you do more reactions to Home Free. I wish Adam Rupp would do more arrangements, their are so complicated I have heard that the guys shy away from them, hard to believe, but I LOVE this one.
Great Post. This is one of my Favs.
Love this rendition of a classic. Thank you for your brilliant analyses and enthusiasm! HappyHolidays!!❤
This is so very awesome! Tim is a superstar! All the guys are so awesome! Love your reaction!
There is a duet out there with Chris Rupp and Tim Foust or you could just listen to Chris by himself
Chris actually has some nice bass in him! As far as we know his lowest chest is Bb1, and he's got a pretty strong C2 in his Amazing Grace cover! (There's even a G1 in that one, though I think I remember something about it being pitch-shifted, but I might just be misremembering)
Extremely hyped for it! I hope you kept an earthquake counter! 😁 And also one for Austin soaring high!
I absolutely Love when Austin's voice finds the rafters !!
I think this is my favourite HF song. I love your analysis, and I learn heaps from your reactions. Thanks, Peter. Merry Christmas from Australia 🎄🎅
Please do Chris Rupp's Shine it's the title track from the album he had out as he was transitioning out of HF in 2016. It's a good song great message in it but fun to sing along with.
Thanks for the R&A; this is one song that I wanted to hear your R&A. E1... now I know what note hurt my ear two years ago during my first HF concert! 😂 This is my favorite version of the songand my favorite HF Christmas carol. Just love the complexity. Merry Christmas! 🎄🎄🎄
Great reaction i was surprised on one Chris Rupp's video he was putting out some mean base sounds
One of my favourites as well. Love #HomeFree
Please check out Home Free and their piece done with Kenny Rogers right before he passed away! It’s amazing and there is an incredible backstory with it! You’ll be thankful you checked it out.
As always very informative. Your analysis has given me an appreciation for Acapella music. I've always been a classical music kind of gal.
