Installed two new basins in my house. Made two attempts at installing both wastes with Everbuild trade silicone and the standard washers that come with the waste. Both times had leaks. Went to B&Q bought two cone kits and Tool Station for a tube of plumbers gold. No more leaks. Most valuable £10.35 I've spent on this job. Don't waste your time trying with other parts or silicone and do as this man says. Wish I had watched this first. Thanks for the help.
You're so right about them pop up wastes. After my third attempt failed with the supplied washer I was starting to lose the will to live. The embarrassing part is my customer was watching over me. Superb channel by the way, much appreciate you sharing your know how.
had a leak with a new popup, did exactly as you said nipped down to b&q and bought the basin seal kit for £2working perfect now, no leaks, you've helped me with a few tricks doing jobsjust to say thanks for taking the time to do your videos handyman
You pulled me out a hole with this mate. Had bother with a vanity basin waste and tried refitting etc to no avail. I've fitted literally hundreds of basins over the years but never had one this troublesome. Anyway, had a look on RUclips and yours was the first video on my search. Hallelujah! Fitted it dry and all was good. Cheers!
As you said to seal my basin waste was a migraine for me. I followed your instractions step by step and it was a SUCCESS!!!Thank you ever so much you are a wonderfull teacher. This is and extremly helpful video.
Thanks for the tips - after trying unsuccessfully to fix a leaking basin that had used the original sealing washers and lots of sealant, I bought the sealing kit from Screwfix (8795R) and now all is well. Getting the conical washer in place when the basin was already installed was a challenge, but with my wife leaning on the pop-up waste pipe from above and me wiggling the conical washer on from below, we managed in the end!
I can tell you from experience. I've tried many times to get this method to work, but by the time you get the basin-mate on from underneath, the silicone bed will be ruined. Besides, that amount of silicone is going to be SERIOUSLY messy. If you must use silicone, fit the basin-mate almost all the way BEFORE applying any silicone, then apply the silicone into the gap between the basin and the waste before pushing the basin-mate all the way on and bedding the waste in.
Its been ten years since you uploaded this video, and I am glad I found it and followed your instructions, I couldn't get the rubber seal from B&Q, but Screwfix had them. Job done, once again thanks for your help.
Watched the video for a bit of guidance- went straight to toolstation and bought a basin seal kit (£1.29), applied plumbers gold as you did got it all over my hands , wiped it off and fitted seal kit job done no leaks,
I did one of these 11yrs ago. The B&Q sealer is brilliant, only trouble is the pop ups rust and fail. It’s then a nightmare to undo the backnut, so I had to take an angle grinder to it. Never leaked a drop though, great advice in this video!
One point is that not much point in going OTT with the top part as any tiny leak will go to drain. You may as well use the seals that come with the unit. It's the lower part where the problem is and getting those threads sealed. Your solution is good.
This is the second time I've come across your videos when I am stuck! Could not get my Screwfix pop-up waste to stop leaking, so now I am off to get that kit from B&Q. Thanks again for your excellent videos
After fitting a new tap and waste and had it leak, I find and watched your excellent video, Purchase the Plumbsure washers and fitted those, the only problem I encountered was that with the thicker washers there was not enough room on the waste to fully tighten the P-trap, it waggled around slightly so the rubber washer didn't bed properly. So in the end I had the use a hacksaw and carefully cutting around the top of the threaded connector remove about 3mm I was able to get it fully tightened.
Great video, fitted new vanity unit and sink. three attempts at fixing leak all to no avail, bought the recommended seal kit and cured leak. straight away. t
Many Thanks. In your video, there are by far the best tips on fitting a a bathroom basin waste pop-up waste plug. The two great tips are the Plumbers Gold silicone plus the Basin Vanity bowl sealer. Great advice, brilliant thank you again. And a nice bloke too.
Thanks for posting this. Just remodelled our En-suite using one of these wastes on the basin. I assembled everything as per the manufacurer's instructions and woke up this morning to find a puddle downstairs. This was caused by the waste not sealing properly (just as you stated) and our nice new monoblok tap dripping slowly into the basin. Getting one of those basin seals from B&Q today and will follow your instructions to fix the problem. Now - how to get my nice new tap to stop dripping.
Maybe I've just been lucky but manufacturers' sealing washers have always done the job for me. That said, I always thoroughly clean the ceramic surfaces with trade wipes to ensure a good seal with the washer and backnut. On occasion I have had to sand down rough spots on the underside of the basin outlet before cleaning with a wipe. Same applies to toilet cistern flush pipe seals.
I had same problem unable to stop leak, my nephew tried for hours, found this video, a couple of quid later job done. thanks for posting here helped me big time
thanks for great bit of advice! and your warnings about aligning side exit holes (later withdrawn, because someone pointed out a relief in the basin) - well .... it is spot on as well. My basin didn't have relief and knowing about this potential problem saved me a lot of grief!
Thanks for the advice. I did use the washers that came with the pop up waste and sure enough it leaked. I found it was because the water runs round the thread on the waste because nothing to stop it. Your solution seems much better as I guess the new deformable washer squeezes into the threads and forms a good seal. Cheers.
Thanks for your response. I purchased the bits and fitted - it was incredibly awkward but - it's it and done. Just waiting for sealant to dry before i check! Big thanks for the reply and great video.
hi i was installing a bathroom suite for the first time. your videos have helped me so much. i could not seal my sink.had to take it out and do it again. even though i had tried it for leaks. i followed your guide went to baq and bought one of these, any one else looking for them you will find them in the plumbing accessories section. i also used plumbers mate on offer at the moment. i now have a leak free basin, thank mate. tony
I used the fittings supplied when l bought my basin and waste and it was leaking and totally hopeless and l wasted so much time . l have now followed your instructions and used plumbers gold and the basin mate and it is perfectly watertight . Thank you for the great video and advise.
Nice clear instructions. I took delivery of my new basin and vanity unit and this is a 1st for me and wondered how to get a good seal when installing so thanks.
I WANT TO SAY A MASSIVE THANKYOU FOR THIS VIDEO AND THE WAY YOU EXPLAINED IT..... IVE JUST HAD A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE X3 TRYING TO DO THIS EXACT JOB... THEN I SAW THIS, GOT THE EXACT BITS YOU SHOWED, AND NOW MY NIGHTMARE IS OVER..... THANKYOU VERY VERY MUCH 🙂🙂🙂
Very well explained and demonstrated thanks ..I was about to do my basin waste but was looking at the silicon washers thinking ..that's an accident waiting to happen...I will do as you demonstrated ..when I manage to get the underside silicon washer back off the thread...still trying very trying!
A plumber's son writes: thanks for this great video. The conical bung kit was the perfect solution to my leaking woes, although I have to confess, the hardened and split washer in the bottle trap, which I hadn't spotted, was a major leakage point! For £4, you can't go wrong with this. Not even a need for putty or silicone.
I have an ‘Instinct mushroom clicker spotted basin waste’. It has a rubber canonical washer, but looks like it’s supposed to be snug with the flange. Is that right? The canonical washer is upside down compared to what you used. I thought maybe it’s there so the metal doesn’t directly touch and damage the top side of the basin.
Thanks should have watched this before using plumbers mait and the washers which came with the waste (started leaking after 3 months) .... sealant and sealing kit all the way - worked a treat !
Hi, very helpful video, but can you help me. Just had one of these fitted in my basin, three days ago. Wife was cleaning and polishing the basin this morning and caught the cloth in between the waste and basin and now it isn't closing. Can I fix it or will I have to get the plumber back next week. Thanks John
Many thanks for your help. Much appreciated. I was ready to ring a plumber!...I bought the item from B & Q this afternoon and it worked first time. ..great little kit! I kept the original rubber washer for above the bowl but used the other bits below. I found it a bit awkward to stop the waste moving round and had to grip the collar hard as I tightened the backnut, to stop overflow inlet getting misaligned. Cheers!
Thanks you are an absolute legend. Every diy job I do I find a video by you and it’s usually the best! Got the rubber seal as well and all done for £15! Easy job!
Nice tip with the cone washer chez , i have never used one of those as i always use plumber's mate around the top to bed the waste in and i use Dow Corning sanitary silicone on the underside to seal it , never had a leak yet , i know you like to use that plumbers gold sealant but the dow silicone is just as good and its antibacterial the same as the plumbers gold but it's about three quid a tube cheaper..... : )
+yensabi Thanks, I'm not sure if silicone sealant has the same properties as plumbers gold. I must admit I like Dow Corning silicone though, it is normally very good. That cone washer has saved my bacon a couple of times LOL. I rarely use plumbers mait, but might give it a try next time ;-) Thanks for the comment ;-)
maybe a daft question but on the black rubber do you have the bigger groves facing up or down? Mine is a butler waste and the rubber part is at the top but not sure what way round the rubber goes, one side has deeper groves and the other almost none. Many Thanks
@Ultimate Handyman, if the slot of the waste is higher than the overflow, (I. E. The slot of the basin waste covers up the bottom half of the overflow hole and the top half is clear for water to flow through) is this going to cause problems/leaks?
Great video- is there any way to extend to waste neck since i know as soon as i add the vanity bowl sealer then i will not have enought thread to connect to the waste trap...?? Thanks
Hmm I'll wait for it to set as I've used the standard one. And then if it leaks I'll slot the doam on. It was so tight I had to cut it off . I've only re did it as just emptied the water when closed. It still went down the waste. I'm wondering if the bit you press down is making a good seal
I went to B&Q in Leyton and they didn't have it in stock so when I got home I checked online and I found it at their Tottenham branch. They don't use the Plumbsure description basin & vanity bowl sealer. They have it as Plumbsure Plastic & Rubber Basin Sealer for £2.02. I am using the plumbers mate at both ends to seal it. Lets see if it works. And thanks for the tip, as my first attempt leaked like it wasn't tight enough, but I couldn't get it any tighter.
This is the manufacturers fault for selling the wrong seals with the kit- it is obvious to everyone that the provided seals do not work! I'm sure yours will seal now. Thanks for the comment
thanks for that..that worked a treat..but because of limited base how can I fit the basin waste to the waste pipe without a waste trap as I have no room under the basin, it is only an outside basin in the outhouse..cheers...
Had a leak from the overflow slot down the threads. Only thing that worked for me was Plumbers Mait. Top tip - keep it in the fridge overnight before using, it becomes easier to work with (less sticky).
I'm trying to fit a pop up in my new bathroom sink, but the slotted waste holes sit higher than the overflow channel. Do I need a new plug? Surely water is just going to sit below the slotted waste holes or is that ok?
thank you so much for posting this - very clear video and instructions - life saver. I tried to fit the same fitting to a leaking sink but the sink is attached to the wall - quite difficult to get to - will be buying water pump pliers and the plumbers gold and washers - thanks for the tips.
Great video. Unfortunately you might find that some of the standard basin wastes are not long enough when using the excellent conical rubber seal - there is not enough projecting thread on the waste to connect the trap to. The only solution is to use an extra-long waste outlet and they are expensive at around £10. Even so, the conical rubber seal is the best solution.
Please use Plumbers Mait ,do not use sealants as overtime it will start to leak. Also you have to wait for sealants to dry before using the basin, not so with the PM
Hi UH! I changed the rubber seal that's at the end of the waste pipe that goes in to the wall (it was leaking). Now there's no leak, but some kind of air lock and the water drains very slowly...have you got any tips to correct this?? Thanks in advance for any help! James
Great Video. Had one installed (with a new bathroom) a year ago, and now it's stopped popping up/down. It either gets stuck down or won't stay down. I'm guessing it'll have to come out completely and replaced or can it be fixed somehow? Are there any known problems like this with click clack wastes?
Thanks for the helpful video. I am having big problems making my basin connection watertight. Would the vanity fitting work for a normal basin as well? There is just a hole in the ceramic. I have Plumbers Mait but it is more like putty than your Plumbers Gold. The ceramic surface where the washer goes underneath looks a bit uneven.
At last there is an engineering solution for a plumbing nightmare. The sealing washer kit ( £1.97 from B&Q) is all you need to ensure the waste won't leak and in my opinion you can forget about Plumbers Gold, Plumber's Mait , silicone sealant etc.
And there is no need to tighten the crap out of everything either, distorting any rubber seals. I made do with the supplied seals by sealing the thread using thick one-wrap PTFE tape. The supplied seal sealed against the basin, but failed to seal the actual thread. No silicone or putty.
Thanks. But is this the plug or the mechanism/spring you're refering to? I'm talking about the later. I don't thnk it unscrews at all. Not without breaking the seal etc!
This might have worked for me but the extra thickness of the washer meant that even when I fully tightened the back nut, there were only two or three turns of the thread on the metal waste section protruding past the back nut. In the plastic connection you need a minimum 5 turns to bring the internal sealing washer into contact with the end of the metal waste casting. So I would have introduced an extra leak hazard.
thank you I have given in for tonight ..{the thing I thought would be simple ] as been the hard part .I have had to re direct pipes from the downstairs loo sink .so I changed the waste as it was grotty .and I have had water leaking down the OUTSIDE of the thread ..now I know what to purchase I will have a rest tonight and go to the plumber in the morning and get the items that you suggest ..again thanks
Evening. Please advise. How long did you wait for the Plumber's gold to dry before putting the rubber washer on underneath? It's a tight fit and I kept on dislodging the plug. When I tightened the back nut the plug kept spinning too. Sadly, it leaked from the underside washer. I'm not in my wife's good books 😔
Afternoon. SO I stripped all the sealant off and started again with the waste plug. This time a rammed loads of sealant on the rim of the upturned plug, then loads on the bung. The latter lubricated the bung so it slipped on without anywhere near as much force. Then I walked away for 24hrs... AND IT WORKED! Patience was the missing ingredient! Thnx (BTW you sound like you have a Chorley/ Leyland accent, brother)
@@baboo36 Glad you sorted it 👍 I'm from Darwen, but have mates in Chorley! (Sorry for the late reply, RUclips comments has been playing up AGAIN, So I have just seen this)
Hi there. I followed your video and tried doing this myself with a new wash basin, but unfortunately it’s leaking! What do you imagine I did wrong please? Thought it was tightened enough, but guess not! Any tips on how to fix it please? Thanks in advance! Cliff
@@ultimatehandyman cheers for responding. I am pleased to say it just needed a good pair of pump pliers to tighten it up a few turns. All done now thanks 🙏🏻😃
I have just purchased a square basin my problem is with the trap, The Mcalpine S trap is it is not taking up the waste thread from the pop up waste. It is engaging from the waste pipe 40mm end of the waste pipe. Can you advise on the size that I should have to fit a 40mm waste pipe and also to take the pop-up waste. Thank you
Really good video with clear instruction. I can't find plumbers gold where I live and I found bathroom and kitchen clear silicone with anti mold. Can I use that instead or what can I use as an alternative to Plumbers Gold? What is it anyway? Is it a sort of silicone?
Plumbers gold is a special kind of sealant designed for sealing plastic components etc. You can use plumbers mait, which is a not setting putty that is often used when installing waste fittings to basins/sinks.
I've come across two of these rubber "Cone" fittings, Plumbase, is a harder rubber, B&Q a softer more flexible rubber, which one would you recommend I use.
+Qee Zee I try and avoid Plumbase as they normally charge extortionate prices to Joe Public. We have a branch in our town and if I need any plumbing bits I even drive to the next town!I know for certain that the B&Q one works well ;-)
Thanks for this. Have been struggling with a new pop-up waste leaking no matter what I tried. Basin's been in and out more times than a vicar's willy in a brothel. These are available at both Screwfix and Toolstation (cheaper) with almost 100% 5 Star reviews. Why on earth don't the waste manufacturers just include one in the box and save everyone the hassle?!
I can't find them on the B&Q website, but their search facility on their site is totally useless, so there is a chance that they still have them. Toolstation have them though- www.toolstation.com/basin-mate/p37534 Thanks for the comment 👍
I have a 1 and 3/4 inch basin waste hole, do I need a 1 and 1/4 inch waste or 1 and a half inch basin waste? They all seem to be one and a quarter inch.
I wish had watched this yesterday! I have installed the sink with pop up waste and now it leeks!!!! I'm not quite sure what to do as the sink is in place! Can I undo backnut and waste and try to put other bits on!?
you can do it without the b & q seal, but you have todo a good job of sealing it (easier with seal). First time i done it i had leaks, couldnt understand the problem but worked out it leaks down the threads around the outer edges. I siliconed it up overnight and it was ok, put a sliver around the top of the thread so it seals it What plumbers do I have seen it make a 'sausage' of plumbers mate and put it around the top, and tighten up.
the problem is always the water tracking down the outside of the threads.....just fill the threads with plumbers mate or other sealant and the problem will be solved.
Am I right in thinking that there was no rubber washer used on the top side of the waste? Just plumbers gold? Great video! This has probably saved me a load of hassle.
I've got a basin waste to install and I intend to try using one of those basin and vanity bowl sealer kits on its own. What I don't understand though, is why water can't come through the overflow slots (either from the actual overflow or by running down the waste as normal and then making it's way through the slot) and then make its way around the threads. Obviously the taper on the rubber bung makes a good seal with the underside of the basin but it doesn't seem like it will make a watertight seal around the threads, so won't water go between the threads and the bung? I hope that makes sense :-)
That makes perfect sense to me, I actually thought about that myself the last time I installed one of these. I think it is because the cone is tapered- when you tighten the nut it forces the taper into the hole on the basin which compresses it making a tight seal around the threads as well as the hole in the basin. Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman Yes that makes sense. Similar to the way that the tapered edge on a compression olive compresses the olive onto the pipe. Thank you for your reply.
Thanks for vid, had problems sealing my basin waste plus also very hard to get to because of pedestal & basin fixed to wall. Still trying to find a tool I can use to get behind to do up the plastic nut. So many different ways of doing this from different plumbers. All say to discard the rubbers washers that come with new waste though. Have heard the sealing kit you show is the way to go, but then can't use the foam washer, but have to buy the extra Plumbers Gold or mait. Why the hell can't they make the kit that actually works?
No I tried with my other hand holding a bit if it but failed , I can't believe the rubber dome is that stiff . As your doing it with ease on the video?
***** The basin waste was purchased from Screwfix ( I think, it was three years ago ). They still sell them now Product Code: 41691 I hope this helps ;-)
Great video. I installed a new basin and pop up waste today, it didn't seal using the supplied washers. I followed your advice and it's totally watertight now.
What kind of silicone do you use to seal/glue the gap? I have all kind of silicone that i dont even know what their specific purpose are and i use it anyhow on any object lol
I just checked the waste i bought for a small vanity and it actually comes complete with 2 Silicon conical seals, so i am guessing these will be find to use without the Plumbers Mait.
Installed two new basins in my house. Made two attempts at installing both wastes with Everbuild trade silicone and the standard washers that come with the waste. Both times had leaks.

I found it a bit awkward to stop the waste moving round and had to grip the collar hard as I tightened the backnut, to stop overflow inlet getting misaligned.
Cheers!
what is the name of the product? can find it on B&Q
The B&Q search is awful.
I've found it at Screwfix- www.screwfix.com/p/thomas-dudley-ltd-basin-waste-seal-kit-3-piece-set/8795r
Thanks you are an absolute legend. Every diy job I do I find a video by you and it’s usually the best! Got the rubber seal as well and all done for £15! Easy job!
I'm glad the video helped
Thanks for the comment 👍
Nice tip with the cone washer chez , i have never used one of those as i always use plumber's mate around the top to bed the waste in and i use Dow Corning sanitary silicone on the underside to seal it , never had a leak yet , i know you like to use that plumbers gold sealant but the dow silicone is just as good and its antibacterial the same as the plumbers gold but it's about three quid a tube cheaper..... : )
+yensabi
Thanks, I'm not sure if silicone sealant has the same properties as plumbers gold. I must admit I like Dow Corning silicone though, it is normally very good.
That cone washer has saved my bacon a couple of times LOL.
I rarely use plumbers mait, but might give it a try next time ;-)
Thanks for the comment ;-)
maybe a daft question but on the black rubber do you have the bigger groves facing up or down? Mine is a butler waste and the rubber part is at the top but not sure what way round the rubber goes, one side has deeper groves and the other almost none. Many Thanks
I think the bigger groves face upwards, towards the basin- so that they create a seal.
Thanks for the comment 👍
@Ultimate Handyman, if the slot of the waste is higher than the overflow, (I. E. The slot of the basin waste covers up the bottom half of the overflow hole and the top half is clear for water to flow through) is this going to cause problems/leaks?
You can also buy the same basin waste part from Toolstation Part No 37534 for £1.17

Thanks!

Thanks for the comment
I'm trying to fit a pop up in my new bathroom sink, but the slotted waste holes sit higher than the overflow channel. Do I need a new plug? Surely water is just going to sit below the slotted waste holes or is that ok?
Yes, you need to get a different waste! Or the water will go stagnant and putrid 👍
thank you so much for posting this - very clear video and instructions - life saver. I tried to fit the same fitting to a leaking sink but the sink is attached to the wall - quite difficult to get to - will be buying water pump pliers and the plumbers gold and washers - thanks for the tips.
You are welcome.

Will a 32mm diameter Cone basin washer fit a 38mm diameter waste ?
Your video helped me solve this exact problem - thanks again for making and sharing these 👌👍

Really helpful video and have followed your advice and method exactly. Thank you!
I'm glad the video helped
Thanks for the comment 👍
Great video. Unfortunately you might find that some of the standard basin wastes are not long enough when using the excellent conical rubber seal - there is not enough projecting thread on the waste to connect the trap to. The only solution is to use an extra-long waste outlet and they are expensive at around £10. Even so, the conical rubber seal is the best solution.
Thanks for the info! 👍
Please use Plumbers Mait ,do not use sealants as overtime it will start to leak. Also you have to wait for sealants to dry before using the basin, not so with the PM
Were can you get the lower washer kit can't find the size as mine is 32mm
Thanks a lot, followed your instructions and used the b&q seal, pleased with the outcome. Keep up the vids, they're really useful
👍
thank you I have given in for tonight ..{the thing I thought would be simple ] as been the hard part .I have had to re direct pipes from the downstairs loo sink .so I changed the waste as it was grotty .and I have had water leaking down the OUTSIDE of the thread ..now I know what to purchase I will have a rest tonight and go to the plumber in the morning and get the items that you suggest ..again thanks
Fantastic. Cheers for the video as this has been driving me mad
Thank you for the top tips, the cone washers worked first time, no leaks :-) happy days.
+Edge Effect You are welcome ;-)Thanks for the comment
I didn't, it was all done at the same time.
You have to use one hand to hold the waste from the top and your other hand to push the washer up.
@@ultimatehandyman I did the same thing. Oh well
@@baboo36 Glad you sorted it 👍
I'm from Darwen, but have mates in Chorley!

Hi there. I followed your video and tried doing this myself with a new wash basin, but unfortunately it’s leaking! What do you imagine I did wrong please? Thought it was tightened enough, but guess not! Any tips on how to fix it please? Thanks in advance! Cliff
These can be a pain, I’d just clean everything off and try again 😉
@@ultimatehandyman cheers for responding. I am pleased to say it just needed a good pair of pump pliers to tighten it up a few turns. All done now thanks 🙏🏻😃
Hello mate. Nice video. What happens if you don’t have a waste section on your sink?
Not sure what you mean, do you mean there is no hole for the waste?
@@ultimatehandyman sorry bud. Realised I ordered a slotted waste pipe. I didn’t realise there were two types. Thanks a lot for posting this vid!
@@veeb6970 Oh, no worries!

We have a branch in our town and if I need any plumbing bits I even drive to the next town!I know for certain that the B&Q one works well ;-)
Top man. Thanks for taking the time and making this video

Just used the B and q kit and the under neath seal is a log bigger and not the same as in the video?
Thanks for this. Have been struggling with a new pop-up waste leaking no matter what I tried. Basin's been in and out more times than a vicar's willy in a brothel. These are available at both Screwfix and Toolstation (cheaper) with almost 100% 5 Star reviews. Why on earth don't the waste manufacturers just include one in the box and save everyone the hassle?!
Thanks much for showing the direction of the slots should be directly towards the overflow hole

Hi... Thanks for the video.. Do you happen to know if BQ still stock those sealing kits?..Thank you.. John.. Bristol
I can't find them on the B&Q website, but their search facility on their site is totally useless, so there is a chance that they still have them.
Toolstation have them though- www.toolstation.com/basin-mate/p37534

Thanks in advance for great tutorial....was cleaining the sink and realised the clik clack is broken so i will be replacing it tomorrow. Thank you

Thanks for the video. Finally managed to get mine in and sealed thanks to your advice
Glad I’ve seen this video. I’ve been struggling for two days to get a seal on a vanity unit and now I know the answer!
Thanks for the comment 👍
you can do it without the b & q seal, but you have todo a good job of sealing it (easier with seal). First time i done it i had leaks, couldnt understand the problem but worked out it leaks down the threads around the outer edges. I siliconed it up overnight and it was ok, put a sliver around the top of the thread so it seals it
What plumbers do I have seen it make a 'sausage' of plumbers mate and put it around the top, and tighten up.
the problem is always the water tracking down the outside of the threads.....just fill the threads with plumbers mate or other sealant and the problem will be solved.
When using plumbers Gold how long after installing do you have to wait until you can use the sink and water?
I'm afraid it takes 24 hours to cure fully, although it will probably be ok after a few hours have passed
Thanks for the comment 👍
Am I right in thinking that there was no rubber washer used on the top side of the waste? Just plumbers gold?
Great video! This has probably saved me a load of hassle.
Yes, I either just use Plumbers Gold or Plumbers Mait to seal the inside of the basin waste to the basin.
Thanks for the comment
Thanks.
Since you are on line can I ask you what is the going daily rate to pay for hiring a bathroom Fitter with your experience?
Chez, thanks for that tip about the use of the bottom seal. Fitting a basin and was just off for wall fixing ķit, will add that other part to my list.

It's beyond me why they don't sell basins with a proper sealing kit!
Thanks for the comment 👍
Excellent, easy explanation and good knowledge, really helped
Glad it helped, thanks for the comment
No I tried with my other hand holding a bit if it but failed , I can't believe the rubber dome is that stiff . As your doing it with ease on the video?
I don't know what to suggest to be honest, I have done a few of these now and never had a really tight one yet!
Will the popup drain that you have work with a sink that doesn’t have overflow?
You can buy one specifically for non overflow units
Super clear and useful. Thank you so much for sharing!

The basin waste was purchased from Screwfix ( I think, it was three years ago ). They still sell them now Product Code: 41691

What kind of silicone do you use to seal/glue the gap? I have all kind of silicone that i dont even know what their specific purpose are and i use it anyhow on any object lol
+Meiji Jap It was Plumbers Gold that I used for sealing the waste. It's specifically designed for applications like this ;-)Thanks for the comment
I have just broken the spring inside after trying to 'fix' the plug not popping up/down. Can I buy a replacement anywhere, I haven't a clue!!
The ""Basin Mate"" what size waste is that designed to fit? Here in NZ our wastes are mostly 40mm.
In the UK a Basin is normally 32mm and a bath is 40mm
I just checked the waste i bought for a small vanity and it actually comes complete with 2 Silicon conical seals, so i am guessing these will be find to use without the Plumbers Mait.
where to get online the plier shown used to tighten the coupling? what is the size?
They are widely available, they are called water pump pliers - fave.co/3L3kGTG
I think mine are about 10" (250mm)
Can you do this on a Monday or is weekend the best?
Late on a wekend is best ;-)
