I've watched a load of videos about basin waste leaks and this is by far the best - brilliantly simple explanations that a novice like me can follow. Thanks!
Thank you. Very good explanation. Other youtube videos only show one method and i was left not knowing wich one was best. You were able to demostrate 4 methods clearly and concised, and that any of these methods are good. The tips were great.
Finally 1 complete video showing all possible methods. You only forgot to mention that if you choose 2 piece waste instead of 1 piece waste, you can rely on washers and don't need to use anything at all.
Great video Mike...you have explained the main options available and edited the video really well to make it easy to follow. The only guide anyone would need to successfully fit a basin waste 👏👏
Fantastic video! So many others only show one way and are contradictory. I'll be using the easiest way - #2 because no mess. If it doesn't work I'll get out the Plumber's Mait.
Very informative, and perfect timing as I have just fitted one of these at my sons house if it still leaks, I’m planning on using basin waste seal kit this afternoon 👍🏼
I tried plumbers mait (messy!) and pfte tape, thought I had it then 1 solitary drip after I've returned the pedestal and re-caulked the sink! Guess I'll be trying a basic waste seal kit next weekend!
Hi Mike, it took me several attempts. Your video really helped. I went from basic attempt with plumbers mate, then using the magic gadget. Still leaking after two attempts. Went back to basics, used plumbers mate top and bottom, no rubber washer on top,, plus cleaned sink carefully. Finally no leak. Fingers crossed, 😊
CT1 - The next plumber is not going to thank you - I would only use this for something that is non serviceable or not easily accessible, as that stuff is more like very very strong glue than sealant. It will definitely do the job, but good luck getting it back off again. - Great video apart from letting people know that the sealants are the worst option for re-visiting this job a few years down the line.
Brilliant video, you make all methods look so easy. I wish I'd seen your vid first, as I used Plumber's Gold to install my pop up sink, which leaked first time. I think the problem was I didn't tighten the nut underneath enough, when I tried, the sink pop up turned on the topside. I ended up taking it all off and cleaning the unit as best I could (from the sticky messy PG). I re-installed the sink pop up a second time, again with PG and left it to cure overnight. I'll soon be going upstairs to run the water and see if I've got it this time. Wish me luck!
Great video. Very clear and simple instructions. Quick question what size is that water pump pliers are you using to unscrew the big nut? Thanks subscribed
Really good video Mike, my only question is do you not use the washer that sits above the sink under the flange when using plumbers mate, or is there just no need ?
great video much appreciated! I wish I have seen this video before I tried fixing it on ad hoc basis which took quite a lot of time and effort! Having seen this video, I tried the PTFE tape as I only had that at the point when I tried and that simple one seems to have worked for me...
I'm sure the double sided technique will work for putty and silicone. BUT not needed. Silicone on top side enough that it sqeezes put when drain is pressed in, and pipe thread sealant paste form not tape, on threads and you will be guaranteed leak free and easy removal in future. Use 99% alcohol and paper towel to clean silicone off top side immediately after tighten. Can be used immediately. But 30 min cure would be even better. Your welcome. I install about a billion of these every week so I have a slight bit of experience id say.
Hello Mike and thanks for the video. My problem is that the leaks come when I open the water for a while and start coming for the counter top for the union of the porcelain base and the countertop of the bathroom. I don't know how to fix it! Can you help me?
With the silicone sealant is the waiting time around as far as I’ve been told it’s anything between 12-24hrs in all honesty I don’t have a scooby doo about plumbing lol.
If I use silicone on the top waste, which means no need rubber washer just apply on the metal things? From your video I can see you still put the rubber back at bottom after apply silicone but did see top part. Please advise
You can use either the rubber washer OR Sealant for the top part of waste, both of which will give you a good seal. For the bottom part I like to use the basin waste washer. You can pick them up from Toolstation or ScrewFix for a few quid. Hope this helps
@mikebolt9753 Thanks. I'm kinda new to this stuff, can you please also tell me the minimal required size for tightening 1 1/4'' nuts? I'm asking this because there are many models of wrench pliers out in the market in various sizes, and I don't want to buy the wrong size for this job.

One of the best VDO on this topic

Thanks, wish I'd seen this a few days ago, don't ask, subbed.

yeah but in the UK, 2 piece is not really a thing, most people won't understand your comment.... maybe you should make a youtube video to demo it.
You included three solution of leakage problem. Thanks brother.
You are most welcome
Really informative and comprehensive video. I learnt a lot. Thanks.
Hey, thanks for the comment. Glad it was helpful

Thankyou. This kind of feedback is nice to hear.
I love Wickes and the staff. The young lad at the Kettering branch is a real gem.
Wonderful.
By far the best vid on You Tube.
Mike, you are a top man! I used a combination of the methods you demonstrated and now have no leaks. Great video! Thanks.
Thank you. Really appreciate the comment.
Good video with the Basin Waste Kit or Plumbers Mate, but its easy to do the fitting on a vanity basin. Try showing it on a pedestal basin in situ.
nice one mike, i now can see what i missed, me not being a plumber or even done any plumbing, so very helpful , thanks mate
Glad to help
Thank you for this! I was driving myself crazy not being able to stop the leak until I learned I had options😂
Glad I could help!
If you choose a 2 piece waste instead of this 1 piece type waste you won't have this issue to sort out
Took a while to find you, just the info I was needing with plenty of details, thanks.
Fantastic video! So many others only show one way and are contradictory.
I'll be using the easiest way - #2 because no mess.
If it doesn't work I'll get out the Plumber's Mait.

Hey. Really pleased the video helped. Yeah it can be a little tricky sometimes getting a good seal. hopefully you will have no more leaks now.
Wonderful, very useful video covering possibly with all the methods. Thank you
Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful
I used a sausage of plumbers mait pushed right up around the thread with the nut tightened up hard on a rubber washer, works a treat..
yeah that'll work

Thanks for the help. Ours from the sink downwards has perished so I will get a new one.

Thanks for you advice. Cheers from Canada.

I thought the polystyrene washer on the basin seal kit went flush against the top of the sink. I haven't had any leaks yet.

Great video. Very clear and simple instructions. Quick question what size is that water pump pliers are you using to unscrew the big nut? Thanks subscribed
Thanks for the feedback and appreciate the sub. I think if I remember correctly they were 10 inch water pump pliers. Hope this helps :)
Great video, thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
hi mike personally my favourite method is plumbers mait easy to use and you can t use straight a way .
Yeah I like the plumbers mait method too.
Really good video Mike, my only question is do you not use the washer that sits above the sink under the flange when using plumbers mate, or is there just no need ?
Yeah you can do to be extra safe, but generally no need to do both.
great video much appreciated! I wish I have seen this video before I tried fixing it on ad hoc basis which took quite a lot of time and effort! Having seen this video, I tried the PTFE tape as I only had that at the point when I tried and that simple one seems to have worked for me...

Very Helpful thank you so much!
Also:
How do you produce the animated image of the under sink?
Thank you :). I use keynotes on my MacBook to do all the animation.
one of the best..👌tqvm..

Perhaps try some ptfe tape or some silicone sealant?
Do they make this rubber washer kit for 1 and 1/2 inch waste?
Yes I think so
Great video.
Thank you :)
Excellent
Thank you! Cheers!

Very good thanks
Most welcome
Very goor, thank u ❤❤❤❤ 👍👍
You are welcome. Thanks for the comment
Hi - I have a problem with leak which is happening just around the white adjustible nut - connecting the bottle with the waste - How do I fix that?
Probably need a new washer
If I use silicone on the top waste, which means no need rubber washer just apply on the metal things? From your video I can see you still put the rubber back at bottom after apply silicone but did see top part. Please advise
I like to use sealant on top waste and rubber washer on bottom waste.

What size and type of grips did you use in this video to tighten the Basin waste nut?
knipex wrench pliers
@mikebolt9753 Thanks. I'm kinda new to this stuff, can you please also tell me the minimal required size for tightening 1 1/4'' nuts? I'm asking this because there are many models of wrench pliers out in the market in various sizes, and I don't want to buy the wrong size for this job.
Just get a large 12 inch adjustable spanner. That should do the trick. @@BredoLab
Great video but why play that loud rushish music ?
just jamming out I guess lol
