How Does a Yamaha 2009 FZ1n compare to a MT-10? The Bike that started the naked revolution.

  • Ok, been a few months, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year where ever you are in the world.
I made a few mistakes later in the Video. I say MT-1 instead of MT-10 and my previous bike was a 2016 MT-10 not a 2006 and a few more.
TeamMoto Yamaha Sunshine Coast had the bike, next video we will do a Dealer experience video.
The power delivery was smooth and lineal, kicking up it's heels after 4000rpm.
The red line is 12000rpm and I really felt the power was more than enough to satisfy my needs coming off the MT-10.
The 2009 R1 is the first Cross Plane Crank engine, The 2009 FZ1 has the inline four R1 engine.
273.58 klm or 170mph should please most people with brakes and suspension and handling to match performance.
    Can't wait ‪@WozzasSportsCruiserRides‬

Great to see you back at it with the videos Wozza! Hope the family's well.
Ever since doing my opens test on an FZ6N I've been keeping my eye out for one of them as a second road bike - just felt really good to ride and look really good for their age. I didn't realise you could get the FZ1N so cheap (especially with all those mods) - I might have to keep an eye out for these too.
    Ride safe!

I had two of these. Each was a 2008 US version with the quarter fairing. It was charcoal metallic with gold wheels instead of the green ones on yours. It was the best bike I ever owned. When I crashed the first one, I found an identical bike and bought it. It is very fast, very refined, very enjoyable. It is a definite gem of a bike and the motor is bulletproof if you change the oil and don't abuse it. It will do close to 100 mph in 1st gear. Mount a set of Metzeler 01SE tires and head out for the twisties.

    • @WozzasSportsCruiserRides

Mate, I know what you mean. The MT-10 is a great bike, I loved it, Lights were bad but easy to add a bar light, 140hp and exciting to ride, the short wheel base is direct and the front wheel a bit or a lot flighty.
The FZ-1 is half the price and only 10hp less, R1 based and easy to get more performance from this platform and seems easier to ride fast.
I've been looking a the BMWs1000r as the next ride or maybe s1000rr simply because I'm looking for 160 rwp and a bike I can do alot of miles on.
The Tuono would be nice, I'm just looking at how many klms I like to do and how many service center's and parts would be available.

Had FZ1NA from new in 2014. Had test ride on MT10 to upgrade in 2018 but thought better of it and kept the FZ1NA.
My FZ1NA (1 = 1000 cc; N = Naked; A = ABS) will keep up with most modern exotica bikes. It loves high speed cornering and tight twisty roads. Stable. It’s aggressive looks has road presence.
You don’t need any power upgrades etc. The only thing I would change is the standard exhaust which weighs a ton and metal brake pipes. High mileage not important. But tyres are if you want to get the best out of your ride. Check stator magnets have been changes. There was a product recall I think. Yamaha glued the magnets and they can separate.

I have both MT10 and 2006 FZ1, the FZ1 is well modded and in some ways is more of a handful than the MT10 and is also slightly faster.. But stock vs stock the MT10 is way better.. both great bikes

      @WozzasSportsCruiserRides  4 года назад +1

Thanks for your insight into both bikes. Having only ridden this 2009 FZ1 for 40min, it felt quick good. It does have those extra performance parts, Powercommander, Airfilter, Sprocket, suspension and dyno'd so to me, it felt very fast, all be it 10kg heavier or perhaps less with pipe.
The MT-10 should be and is a better bike given there 7 Years plus newer.
The short wheel base make the MT a real hoot to ride, mine had the Woolich racing tune.
The Front wheel always in the air under power, the FZ1 perhaps is more planted in the power delivery.
I'm really keen to experience the FZ1 more and of course I miss the MT-10.
A FZ1 can be purchased for half the price of the MT-10, the good thing is, it's not half the bike, Maybe 10% less, that's a lot of bang for buck.
I think if I was going new again I'd go straight to the 2020 KTM 1290. That is the bad boy.

Also that screamer engine once some restrictions removed with ecu and exhaust is brutal. It doesn't really matter about what people think, Most of these people don't even ride and then those that do can't ride that well, then those that are left don't bother. All the blokes today at the club ride loved the bike, thought it was a steal at the price, half the price of a second hand MT-10 and just as fast if not better in the corners.

Yes, the Fz is raw, no Abs, no traction control, slipper clutch or power mods.
It's an entry level bike from 2009.
The good thing is they can be remapped, the suspension just needs tuning to your weight and style of riding. The brakes a good.
On track the FZ1 is a bit slower down the straight and less drive out of the corners.
The MT-10 is coming down in price, the first model is 9 years old.
I could easily get a MT-10 again although a adventure bike might be the go for me next.

It's a Yamaha it will run forever just change the fluids. I know guys with Yamahas with 140 thousand kilometres on them and they still run like a top.

I had a 2006 FZ1 which was the worst bike I've ever owned. The upshift gear change was notchy and difficult to apply and according to the FZ1 forum, this was not an isolated incident. The Power Commander was woeful and friends following my bike at the time complained about the fuel constantly coming from the exhaust and this after the bike had just been serviced. Sold it and ended up with a 2012 Triumph Speed Triple 1050 which in my opinion is a vastly superior bike and well worth the extra few bucks it cost.
Good presentation none the less and nice to watch your vid again Waz!

Sounds like a bit of a dud, I didn't find any problems like that on this bike, a 2012 Triumph was a bike I was looking at and a 990, KTM 2009.
This bike seems well suited and loved by it's previous owner.
Thanks for your input, I'd be pretty pissed if this bike ends like that.

Yeah early models (06 07) have bad stock fueling and also the crack in the frame. What you experienced is a mix of bad map/no lambda sensor/no cat/no AIS. Later models with proper tuning are really good bikes.

Dont get me wrong, the fz1 is a good bike for someone on a budget that doesnt have a bunch of experience. Its plenty fast and handles okay. But it is absolutely not near the bike the mt10 is. Literally everything is better on the mt, by quite a bit. But like i say, if you are on a budget, or just starting out and trying to get some experience, then... whatever works, works. If you have $6k and can afford $120 per month, most people will be much happier with the mt.

I've spent 3year 10months on a MT-10, all the fruit, ride days at 3 different tracks. It's a great bike.
Short wheel base the same as a MT-07.
I think from my first ride on a tuned and sorted FZ1 it's not for someone with little experience and will definitely hold it's on in most sports bike or naked bike ride days.
Have you ridden both or owned either?

@@WozzasSportsCruiserRides Both are kick ass bikes. I apologize if it sounded like i was putting down the fz1. All in all the mt10 lacks a bit in the brakes and suspension also so, its not twice the bike the fz is or anything like that. I love them both and have experience with both. I have also had both on the dyno. Peak hp only tells part of the story. The important numbers to look at on the dyno are how quickly it generates speed. Like you said, its a different kind of power. An fz1 makes power like a great 90's naked bike. An mt is a little more modern when it comes to power delivery. Two bikes can have the same peak hp numbers but accelerate very differently. In my opinion a skilled rider would probably do better in the long run on the mt. But if you have $5 and dont want a payment... the fz is absolutely not a bad choice. One just needs to keep in mind that the limits are a little lower for the fz compared to the mt. If you do a track day on the fz1 id like to hear your input on it. An mt with an ecu flash and some suspension and brake work would be a tough act to follow, let alone catch. keep up the great work, your channel is sweet!

Thanks, I agree the MT-10 will jump straight away at 2500rpm and the Tourque in bmode on the 2016 with the Woolich tune was crazy fast but most people would struggle at bit with the short wheel base keeping the front down.
At the Strip there pretty hard to get off the line, still quite fast.
The MT-10 is of course a better more modern bike with traction control and and ABS.
Having said that a second MT-10 2016 should be around that $11,000 to $12,000, so the comparison is a Naked bike that's a great alrouder, does everything well, not perfect and around half the price, you can get the original supernaked FZ1.
I have had only a 20min ride of the FZ1 so not a lot of experience on it, I do feel that this FZ1 has been set up to ride fast and can't wait to ride it more.
I would love to put it on the Dyno to see how the powercommander and tune run in this bike, however the test ride confirmed to me it's set up very well, it's very fast and it's not for a inexperienced rider.
I miss my MT-10 , I do feel however this bike will be a lot of fun, Track days to come.

People usually work on their bikes. You can change the rear shock absorber and revalve the fork for cheap. Throw in a quality full exhaust and a good tune and you'll change your mind. The stock exhaust on the MT-10 also needs to be changed so you're only left with the suspension.
I really hate the transformers look all the brands are going for lately so that also makes me lean towards the fz1.
I wouldn't mind having cruise control available though

@@Beebzafreak I got this 2009 model because someone has spent the money on it with go fast parts. Coming from the MT-10 this bike is very fast. FZ1 is very fast and set up well. I can hop straight on it, ride it to a Track day, have a ripper track day on it and ride home. Good allrounder.
