@@TheEmeraldSword04 It's mostly because it's obvious and the wiki is mostly serious with giving its info. It's like saying "eating pizza in real-life is slower than eating it in game".
Wow, you've done it, Sega finally knows who you are. Amy even called you the Lore Master meaning that Sega knows Cybershell is the Sonic Lore Master. All my respect goes to you.
Fun fact: Strong Bad HIMSELF uses and acknowledges this wiki in an official HSR video when he can't figure out a fan's intentionally-obscure Halloween costume and has to look up who it is
my favorite wiki is definitely the Super Mario Wiki, which has standards of quality and professionalism higher than literally any other fanwiki I've ever seen. basically every time I've used a Fandom wiki for something I've always had the thought "dang. this would be so much better if it was following the editorial standards of the Super Mario Wiki instead of what it's doing here"
The Mario wiki is so good. And they have pictures for EVERYTHING, every little enemy from Mario 64 has transparent renders, that must have taken forever.
@@yurifairy2969 That's the main gripe I have with the doctor who wiki. It has insane amounts of info all cited excellently, but the main thing it lacks is pictures. It has barely any images throughout the body of the article and the main one at the top is always a face closeup so its a terrible resource when you need image references.
Funnily enough, I went as "Anonymous Contributor" for Halloween one year, which actually made Strong Bad himself reference the wiki itself on one of the official "Fan Costumes" compilations.
I love how Amy called you "Lore Master" on 'accident'. Either they did their research or the voice actors or writers for that segment know you. Either way, on top of them making the reference, I can imagine hearing that felt pretty good.
i absolutely adore the splatoon wiki "inkipedia" cuz they got literally EVERYTHING about this game on here. translation differences, deciphering the in game language, pages about obscure characters only appearing in haikara walker its fucking great side note: man i've been seeing homestar runner related content a lot more lately
I think The Cutting Room Floor is my favorite to just browse here and there. It isn’t quite as extensive but the content they cover is so much fun to sift through. That and the pages can sometimes have some fun gags.
A few of my favorite wikis Stardew Valley's wiki is mostly written by Eric Barone, the game's developer, and is accurate to the point of speedrunners and challenge runners going by information on the wiki over their own memory The Ultrakill wiki is awash with jokes after a big RUclipsr made a joke about editing the wiki to change the lore The Super Mario Wiki is notoriously thorough to the point that when the official Super Mario Encyclopedia came out it had several entries that were partially or fully copied from the wiki, all of these instances of copying are documented on the wiki.
"runners going by information on the wiki over their own memory" What thats absolutley the reverse of the current reality?? For YEARS the admins have refused to change shit because speedrunners discovered them. "The Wiki is right" is literally a meme at this point???
Since you mentioned They Might Be Giants, I should note that there wiki is just as detailed the Homestar Runner Wiki. It's called This Might Be A Wiki and every song they've made has a page on this wiki, even each songs demos or released live versions. Each song page has all the albums it appeared in and when it was first performed live. There are also pages dedicated to every live show a song is played, song themes, a page where you can write you own meaning of the song, a page showing different versions of that song with links to pages of there own, guitar and bass tabs, and even a page about songs that have been mistaken as TMBG songs.
Hunters & Collectors also has a wiki like this, as does NIN. I’m so glad that there are fans living their best life like this, especially when it comes to listening to demos 😂
Logopedia is one of my personal favourites, because they have literally every logo known to man documented on it, the designers of said logos, and how the logo has evolved over time.
The Old School Runescape Wiki has to be my favourite, a wiki so essential that they baked a "lookup on wiki" function into the game's UI. It's not just useful and comprehensive, it's also right up there with the dwarf fortress wiki as one of the most entertaining things to read out of context. Just smash the random page button a few times, you won't regret it.
I was about to write up a good summary of the OSRS Wiki (RS3 has just a good wiki too since it's a sister site). Glad you mentioned it here, it deserves all the love it can get.
I think the worst wiki is the rs wiki. The admins are either paedos or corrupt and nepotistic. There's constant infighting, drama, backstabbing, and gossip behind the scenes that they don't show publicly, and my god they're some of the most insufferable people I've ever seen. It wouldn't surprise me if they got a notification from me simply saying "RS wiki," as I know for a fact they search and review every single mention they get on reddit. Do you understand just how up your own ass you have to be to do that?
I've always liked the Touhou wiki (the dedicated website wiki, not the shitty fandom wikia one that regularly gets vandalised). High levels of detail (even for fangames), lots of screenshots of spellcards, a really good article about how to run touhou games on Mac or Linux, and english translations of most of the print works.
Yeah, I really like that they also have transcripts for the games, lists of fandom interpretations of the characters and translations for the encyclopedia-type books on the characters only released in Japan. Really makes it easy to find info on any of the close to two hundred characters the series has.
It's got one major problem, and it's not including all the official games' art for characters in their gallery. The top of the page shows their most recent appearance, but it doesn't show older games' sprites so you can't compare and contrast.
I only wanted to check this comment section to see if someone would mention the Touhou wiki just once, deep down somewhere, if I'm lucky. Third comment I found. Glad to see people appreciate it as much as I do
For serious use, a Fandom wiki is always going to be inferior to a dedicated alternative; however, giving the ability to whip something stupid up in an afternoon for all to see is still great. Harkipedia is my personal favorite, dedicated to the king from the CDI Zelda games and creating a whole alt-history lore around him.
Personally I love the Sound Effects Wiki, it's a surprisingly thorough wiki about specific sound effects used in cartoons, shows, movies, games etc. If there's a sound effect I know in my head but don't know the name of I wanna use in a project of mine (especially if I can't find it in my personal SFX horde due to how said sound effect's file might be labelled), it's a great resource to find out what the sound is called and even what sound effects library it originates from. Once you get past the vibe of it being run by a bunch of weird autismos that get _really_ obsessed over sound effects used in children's media, it's a really fascinating wiki.
yeah, autistic people tend to overrun fandom/miraheze wikis. (i'm autistic, so anyone reading this shouldn't bother with the "THIS IS ABLEIST SPEECH!!" shtick)
I like fanon wikis that go into absurd detail about things that don't even exist. Of note is the Plants vs. Zombies Character Creator wiki, which has fanmade plants and zombies... but they also have a category which shows some entries that were made canon. Always accidentally of course, but sometimes the similarities between the fanon and the canon depictions are surprisingly close.
there is an entire wiki about hypothetical tornadoes, detailing fictional tornado outbreaks and storms, but the entire thing is subject to OC power creep so like 90% of the pages are overpowered EF8 Super Tornadoes with a death toll of 500 million and $50 quadrillion damage
I know the knock off fandom version of the Mario wiki would list Bowsers second cousins and distant uncles, from games like NSMBW: The UNDERGROUND and NSMBW: The HIGH SKY, everything I mentioned never actually existed.
The Mario Wiki deserves some credit for how well put together it all is. It was a pretty invaluable resource for my Yoshi's Island video. Each stage had its own small article. I also appreciate that it's lacking the Fandom stink a lot of other large wikis have. And of course there's the cutting room floor. When a RUclipsr needs to talk about prototype or beta content for a video game, tcrf is there too provide, lol
Seconding the Mario Wiki. I only used it for Super Mario Advance 4, but it had by far the most comprehensive info on the game, with each of the e-Reader levels (including all the Japan-exclusive ones) having their own articles with maps and pictures of the cards. The only thing it was missing was a deeper dive on the cut content, which is available on The Cutting Room Floor.
One of my favorite wikis is the hypothetical tornadoes wiki, people just create fake tornado events and go into extreme detail on events that never happened. Found it because it comes up when trying to search for real tornadoes lmao
As a Kirby fan and Wikirby editor, I find a lot of joy in working with them and just looking at articles. It's very organized and a lot more dedicated than the fandom wiki. I've made a lot of amazing friends there and I cherish every one of them (Hi Jelly, Sam, Kirb and everyone else!) 💜
It still really sucks that the Fandom-style Kirby Wiki gets placed higher up most times on Google searches. It's a good wiki, great even, but Wikirby's got that beautiful look, great formatting, and more!
I just could never exactly understand the beef Wikirby and r/Kirby had against the Kirby Wiki. Being an editor from the Kirby Wiki myself, it's a bit difficult to forgive and forget the disrespect that was shown to some of our members, and belittling both aforementioned parties doled out (having been around the Kirby Wiki since 2012 myself, I've seen much of it) instead of lending a helping hand, or pointing us in the right directions, instead jumping to posts and Thanks Kirby Wiki/Twitter to mock us or individual editors. I get things aren't necessarily like that these days, as it does seem to have tapered off (at least, I hope it has... admittedly I've never paid much attention to the drama that happened off the Wiki, I was just aware it happened/the knowledge was brought to me from other editors) and I've never believed in an "Us vs. Them" mentality that was pushed so frequently in the past by those two parties. I'm just happy both communities exist, I wouldn't be the same person without making the great friends that I have, all through editing on the Kirby Wiki. Let's see what the future holds for us, eh? EDIT: I do understand the way people feel about FANDOM... I suppose that people were unfairly taking their frustrations out on us because we were associated with FANDOM, which is a pity. At the end of the day though, even though we're different communities, we're still just regular people and Kirby fans. That type of stuff just shouldn't be happening...
@@dachel683 It's rather surprising at first, but once it happens a handful of times it just becomes unfortunately ordinary. Wiki's, no matter if independent or FANDOM supported, are still driven by ordinary people. There should be no type of drama at all between Wiki's... but then again, we aren't the only two communities with a history. Things like this just happen. Different people, different ideas, clashing interests... etc.
3:38 I wish transcripts were more common on wikis, it's one of the best parts of Halopedia whenever I want to reference or look up some obscure dialogue.
something ive always loved about the hrwiki is that it has a list of every font used in the toons, and examples of their usage. has been a super useful resource of good contexts to use certain typefaces
I absolutely adore the "kirby bulborb" wikia. it's a mostly solo ran site made by the guy who runs a youtube plush series of the same name. last time I checked, he actually updates it daily. it's incredibly thorough about subject matters that somehow all fit into the oddly extensive kirby bulborb lore. it's just always been fun rummaging around, trying to find the most absurd pages I can find. The dude is obviously incredibly dedicated to his art, and it's almost certainly some kind of outsider art. The plushy videos themselves are weirdly entertaining, too.
puella-magi wiki has insanely in-depth articles on everything Madoka magica, even random fan stuff. Its messy sometimes and many pages are outdated, but it's so thorough I wouldn't want it to change one bit.
My favourite wiki has to be the standalone version of the JoJo wiki. Every character has a list of appearances, their main color palletes across the series, and an in-depth gallery, and in turn each piece of JoJo material has a list of characters that appear within it, whether it be the anime, the manga, any Spin-offs, etc., they have character appearance lists going by part, by volume/episode or even by individual chapters. It even has pages for interviews with Araki, the many pictures he's used for inspiration for his poses, galleries of the model sheets used in the anime and in the Phantom Blood film, and even a page for detailing all of the times when a certain song was played in every episode of the Anime and the OVAs, going as far as putting timestamps for when they are played. It also has information about Araki's other works as well. The Touhou Wiki has to have an honourable mention here, it not only provides information about the official games, but also details fan content and info about certain series that are connected to Touhou.
The JoJo Wiki deserves more praise. They surely put their whole soul in informating the fandom, news, minigames, translations, interviews. It's a must-check.
TCRF has to be the best wiki to just hit random page and read. WiKirby is also great for condensing the world of Kirby lore. The Emulation General Wiki and the Official Terraria Wiki are also worth a mention for how helpful they were when I used them. Some of the most impressive I know of that I don't really use are UESP and ArchWiki. I've heard high praise for both of them.
The Silent Hill wiki is pretty good. It covers things like what aspects of the characters' psyche the monsters might represent - in the good games, anyway. It had an incident a few years back where a rogue admin started changing all the pages to fit his personal pet theory where the games are secretly about the trauma of circumcision, which was pretty funny to hear about from a distance.
@@rando843 gotta be honest, I don't read the wiki. I was just assuming there wasn't much to analyse in the precise enemy choices in Thing You Recognise: The Silent Hill Diablo Game. SH4 kinda mid though
The Smash Wiki is an amazingly comprehensive wiki on the whole series, documenting every character and changes made to them, single moves that each character has usually with their own individual page, weird glitches, single player modes, irl events and players (yes, which includes controversy) and more.
This Might Be A Wiki is the most extensive fan wiki for anything I have ever seen. It has every show the band They Might Be Giants has every played, every song (both released and unreleased). It’s insane how extensive it is.
The Jerma lore wiki is always one that’ll get a good laugh out of me and my friends, despite none of us ever watching any of his streams, and I’d say I think a lot of the NIWA wikis are quite good, in particular the Animal Crossing one has a ton of stuff on it given the amount of items, holidays, and other minor elements exist in those games. One that I know about, despite not committing myself to running it, is an entire wiki dedicated to guides of speedrunning Super Mario 64. Speedrun wikis are a bit of a rarity, but it figures that one exists for one of the most popular speed games of all time.
Personally my favorite wiki is Bulbapedia. Whenever I'm thinking about anything Pokémon related I can just look it up on there, whether it is to find out what moves a Pokemon learns or if something silly just comes to mind. One recent discovery I made is that Ariados can learn Psychic at level 63 in Pokémon GSC.
I'm surprised nobody brought up the Minecraft Wiki yet, it is very mechanically in-depth, complete with tutorials and references in case you wanted to implement the more complex ideas in your own worlds.
@@XanthinZarda Fandom buying things like gamepedia was the worst thing to happen to wikis as a whole Fandom is soaked in ads, bad design and a general lack of quality from the core
My personal favorite wiki definitely has to be the Puyo Puyo Nexus wiki. It’s one of the largest repositories for Puyo Puyo specific information, going into detail about each character, and every game. I made an entire presentation about Puyo Puyo in my AP seminar class just using information from the Puyo Puyo wiki. It was a constant read for me during my school years as it was one of the few unblocked video game wikis. Definitely recommend checking it out if you’re an American Puyo Puyo fan.
this wiki reminds me of the spongebob wiki, despite the fact it's on fandom. they are very organized and dedicated, they have pages for every character (including incidentals/bg characters, their original sheets, the ways those incidentals were named, etc), every episode, every track used in the show, entire transcripts, and every episode has a collection of nearly every frame from said episode. i really like it, and they are very dedicated to categorizing anything and everything spongebob related. you can even view the deleted scenes, storyboards, links to every track, etc. not to mention the subgenre of spongebob music which has its own community dedicated to ripping the unreleased tracks from the show. the list goes on, and i'd have to say that's my personal favorite wiki.
i like it a lot too, used to be very active on the social side of it (username's SwagM) but i do think it isn't as thorough as it used to be. like there used to be tons of really specific pages and plenty eventually got removed for being too specific lol
The Spongebob wiki is so useful if you remember a random quote but don't remember what episode it's from. If you just type the quote into Google, 9 times out of 10 a transcript of the episode it's from will pop up. Thank you Encyclopedia SpongeBobia.
I would also like to add that ESB is essentially a direct democracy, which sets it apart from other wikis. Any user has the ability to vote and comment on any wiki change, page deletion/merge, staff promotion, etc through a support/oppose/neutral system. It really makes it feel like an actual community effort to make the best SpongeBob database possible. I met a lot of good friends through this wiki in 2019-2021 and we still talk today!
I was extremely active on the HRWiki when I was a kid from about 2008-2010 - it was my first online community. Kinda weird to think that Homestar Runner was actually getting regular updates in those days, and the site has been in its dormant state now for over a decade.
I'm glad you gave TFWiki a shoutout citing its snarky writing, but when it comes to covering decades old franchises with multiple reboots, that site too is also unmatched in that regard. You have disambiguation pages for every reused character name/term, detailed descriptions of every TV show, movie and comic with listings of what characters appear in it divided by faction, listings for every toy and piece of similar merchandise a character has recieved, and pages for every piece of fan jargon.
My personal favorite wiki is the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages. It is such a useful resource on the games, along with all of the lore that exists outside the games. It has been around almost as long as the Elder Scrolls series has.
It's a pretty neat resource, for sure. One of my friends is on the UESP team, actually, so sometimes I get to hear about occasional behind the scenes stuff or weird niche things, like the recent historic change of Lore:Dragons being been moved to Lore:Dragon. Its been the former since before "Lorespace" even existed on UESP, way before Skyrim itself. Its finally been changed for consistency. Funny things like that.
The They Might Be Giants wiki (This Might Be a Wiki) has: Every show they've ever played over the last fourty years listed - including the amount of wiki editors that attended. A unique entry for the history and context of every song, both released and unreleased, alongside fan interpretations of the song. Guitar, bass and drum tabs for EVERY song, in case you want to learn how to play them. Info on every project the Johns have ever worked on outside of TMBG (I've learned so much about Flansburgh's work as a music video director!) It's just...so much information, and so lovingly put together!
I love how the Ed Edd n’ Eddy Wiki has every episode transcripted. You can quote anything from that show(unless it’s a mishear), and you can search it up and see what episode it’s from. It’s surprisingly convenient if you’re obsessed with the show, like I am right now.
Not a traditional wiki, I guess, but I think PC Gaming Wiki is one of the absolute best wikis out there for folks who wanna play old games on modern PCs. For practically every game I have that has released prior to 2012 I've gotten useful information on running them smoothly.
it can not be understated how important wikis are because nowadays a lot of information on subjects are being locked behind paywalls or make you Have to join a discord to get access to documentation which makes me personally very upset. Making it so you have to join a discord to get information that's hidden is so bizarre to me
so much video game stuff that would have been a gameFAQs text document 15 years ago is now either 75% ads on a Fandom-owned site or in some discord like you said
@@BB-848-VAC y'know why? cause editing is usually free and anyone can do it. very rarely will you look up the wiki for something that *no one* knows about. And hey, if you know stuff that isn't documented, you can always make sure no one is gonna be in the dark like you, right?
The Super Mario Wiki will always be my favorite, I used to spend hours browsing through obscure Mario information and characters back in middle school. It's just one of those wikis that makes you appreciate the whole idea of surfing a website, finding new things at every corner and learning useless knowledge that makes you happy
Back when this video came out, it actually got me into Homestar. I had never heard of the series before this video came out and now I'm a massive fan of it. Thanks, Cybershell.
My personal favorite HRWiki anecdote is that there’s a post on the wiki using spoons as an example of unnecessary wiki content (I’m not sure if it was from a mod or something), and linked on that page is a wiki article for spoons. On said article there is a line that states of “A main page pop-up says that, without this very wiki, The Brothers Chaps could not remember which toon The Cheat held a spoon in. The Cheat, incidentally, has never held a spoon in a toon. (The closest he gets is holding a whisk in yes, wrestling.) However, he does hold a spoon in Homestar Ruiner, as he mixes the Jela-Ton into the pool water.” Also, you got the official Sonic the Hedgehog account to both seemingly accidental reference Homestar Runner and refer to you as the lore master in one tweet?! That’s some neva-forgive action right there.
My favorite HRWiki moment is Homestar making a joke about rednecks that made no sense then saying, "Bwahahaha! dey do not weaw showts." And there was an argument over whether he said "Shorts" or "Shirts".
My favorite aspect of the Homestar wiki is the transcript for an unreleased cartoon called Soap Box Doiby. The Chaps came across the unfinished text at one point and just uploaded it for people to read.
When I saw the video title I had a feeling you meant the H*R wiki. As for other good wikis out there, TV Tropes (yes, it's a wiki) is excellent for it's pure entertainment value as well as being a decent resource for discovering new media of all types (though for certain minds it can lead to hours lost to unending curiosity). The Cutting Room Floor is also a strong contender for it's immense wealth of information and images of unused content in video games, as well as detailed lists of regional differences and the occasionally juicy tidbit about a game's development.
Tv tropes is great! I love discovering things through it and just getting loads of ideas from reading random trop- Whoops FUCKING 20 tabs opened send help i can't stop clicking on hyperlinks
I use "WiKirby" a lot as it's my favourite wiki. It has great documentation of the Kirby games, artwork, Easter Eggs and even has a listing for "The Book Meta Knight was reading in the opening to Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Deluxe)".
I run a fan wiki for Crazy Frog. Thanks for making this video, I love the concept of hosting your own fan wiki on your own website as opposed to just posting on Fandom
Try Breeze Wiki, its an alternative frontend for Fandom! Self hosting is a big step. If you choose to take it, it would be cool i love to see self-hosted stuff. But there's a lot of Free Wiki Hosting services as well, there's more options than DIY vs Fandom.
niwa (nintendo independent wiki alliance) is overall pretty snazzy, but wikirby to me personally is a wonderful and charming wiki with a great community backed with it. i've edited the wiki for about over two years now and it has been such a joy to see it grow back from the years it was desolate (it was founded in 2010 but only seemed to steadily pick up more traction around 2017-2019). it's lighthearted in places, while still taking its subject matter seriously. i love everyone there so much, and couldn't have asked for a better first community to become a part of... i met my very best, closest friend as well as other good friends there ❤ seriously, check it out. the community works hard to make it thorough and welcoming, with the coverage and userbase increasing consistently. it's one of the best communities on the net, in my opinion~
As soon as I started this video I was telling myself "man I hope he talks about Hrwiki, that's the best wiki on the internet forsure." I can't express how excited I got when you revealed it Homestarrunner influenced me so much as an artist, this rules. Thank you so much.
I don't often use Wikis, but shoutout to the Evangelion wiki for being there for me to deep dive for hours to try and make any sense of the plot of the final few episodes. Nothing like reading through a wall of text for an intangible philosophical concept, clicking a blue link halfway through, and starting a new wall of text on a huge robot that fights aliens. And as much as people shit on Wikia / Fandom wikis, you have to respect there being a free way to host consolidated knowledge for fans who simply don't have the money to host a dedicated site or programming experience to lay it out properly. Plus I've gotten a ton of mileage out of Fandom sites for niche games / shows.
The dustloops wiki is a great wiki that covers most of the popular anime fighting games. It's has good information but also plenty of humor to go along with it. Also who could forget the legendary character bios on the super combo (formally srk) kof 98 character pages, definitely worth a read.
I love that they have a page for a shitty Fist of the North Star game that has a move that is so poorly programmed that it has a chance to make the arcade cabinet burst into flames
@@Bighomie39 The move hits “an infinite amount of times” and it causes the machine to get very angry. It can either crash the game, softlock the game until the timer runs out, or in rare case it causes the machine to overheat and burst into flames
The non-fandom jojos bizarre adventure wiki is really great. Im also quite fond of the sonic robo blast 2 wiki, it makes learning how to mod the game incredibly accessible. i also occasionally like to think about the weirdly invasive mike and melissa fandom, as well as the back in the barnyard fandom that enjoys talking about udders and milk a little too much on certain character descriptions.
I love JoJo Encyclopedia. They take the term Dedicated to a whole nother level. Coming thru my mind, vocal percussion on a whole nother level, coming thru my mind.
There used to be a long-running fanwiki a few years back called 1d4chan. It was essentially, like many other community encyclopedias, a place where people would post and share information; specifically around table-top games like Warhammer, DnD, and other titles. However almost every single page was filled to the brim with comedic humor and dialogue between fictional characters as though they were constantly fighting over who was in control of the article. There was also an archive for fan made stories and content which made the website far more unique compared to most wikis which majorly only focus on official work or media. Sadly, I think the website was shut down a while ago or suffered some server crash, so chances are all of those stories, pages, and work are long gone.
BIONICLESector01 is my favorite wiki - it’s the formerly-official wiki of the BIONICLE community. It has a competitor in the Fandom wiki, but the wiki has remained independent since its inception and the owner has repeatedly rejected *buyout offers* from Fandom. It’s kind of crazy. The Fandom wiki was started by a former BIONICLESector01 user who got mad because he wasn’t allowed to make things up and put them on the wiki. BIONICLESector01 encourages and enforces a citation system, something the Fandom wiki does not do, so BIONICLESector01 is really the only reliable and trusted source in the community aside from a newer one called The Great Archives that focuses on using direct and exact wording with every claim sourced. Because BIONICLESector01 is so old, there are wide and popular misconceptions present in the fandom that seem to have originated from there, and people *today* have to perform what is essentially digital archaeology to uncover whether or not unsourced rumors that started on the wiki are actually true. There’s all sorts of crazy stuff happening in the BIONICLE community
@@planescapedwhy would they get involved in a third party client? Not Wikimedias fault the teachers can’t update to adapt to modern tech. I’d prefer they fix the ‘citation needed’ bug first. Seems every day I get on I find at least three or four, sometimes in one article! Do better, Wikipedia
"Yes, I know you clicked this video to hear me talk about funny wikis and now I'm explaining the differences between the DVD and RUclips versions of a two decade old flash cartoon, if you have a problem with that; too bad, you can't leave now, the video is almost over. Sunk cost fallacy." LMAO, this cracked me up, definitely one of the best things I ever heard this year.
Encyclopedia SpongeBobia is essentially a direct democracy, which sets it apart from other wikis. Any user has the ability to vote and comment on any wiki change, page deletion/merge, staff promotion, etc through a support/oppose/neutral system. It really makes it feel like an actual community effort to make the best SpongeBob database possible. The site's theming is really appealing and professional looking, matching the aesthetic of the show quite well. It also has extensive information on the tracks used in every episode, character relationships, one-off characters that never appear again, SMASHED POTATOES THAT LOOK LIKE SQUIDWARD, even random objects nobody cares about. Not to mention the site hosts impressive documentation of the spin-offs and movies as well. My favorite part is the page on ESB's history, who created it and how the wiki came to be! I met a lot of good friends through this wiki in 2019-2021 and we still talk today!
This is such a timely video (though I'm watching it 7 days late) because I recently felt inspired to contribute for the first time to an obscure, niche fan wiki to translate and archive some content that maybe all of 10 people worldwide will ever search up. But at the same time, there's been so many times that I've searched for something and been insanely grateful that some random soul made a wiki page for it, so I'm glad to have finally paid it back.
If you need any more proof that the HRWiki is the most thorough and up-to-date wiki in existence, the brothers Mike and Matt Chapman, _the creators of the cartoon site,_ regularly use it to fact check themselves and keep the characters and timeline consistent.
Runescape / Oldschool Runescape / Runescape Classic have a great wiki. Each game has it's own wiki, but at any time you can click a button at the top of the page which will take you to the respective page for the other games if it is available. It's really cool for seeing the divergence in design and history of the game.
The Coppermind, which is the wiki of all Brandon Sanderson stuff is fantastic. Of course it is not a fandom wiki which is very cool. One feature I really appreciate is the time machine, which lets you go back before a book was released if you want to avoid spoilers for it. It is also incredibly in depth on all the ways the books connect, and also hosts Arcanum, which has a record of basically every time Brandon has ever answered a question ever.
It's probably not a true contender for the best wiki, but I've always appreciated how thorough the Spongebob wiki is. Each episode has a bunch of production notes, and lists things like what songs played during the episode. What's more, if you go to the page for any given song, it has the song itself, the dialogue spoken while it played, and visuals of that moment. Because of how deeply engraved some of those moments are in my memory, it's really cool to see a compilation of all that. It makes you realize how prevelant certain songs, or even certain instruments, really are.
My personal favorite Wiki is probably TV Tropes. I don't know why but I can spend literal hours reading about how my favorite media uses certain tropes that also show up in other media (learning more about storytelling, fun facts and such in the process), not to mention the obligatory rabbit holes I end up going through that leave over 30 new tabs open in my browser for the next couple weeks.
I remember accidentally stumbling on a fanfiction section of a page once, and laughing my ass off at some of the crossover fics listed. I didn't even read them all the way through (just the first few pages), the crossover choices were just hilarious and I was in total shock that this existed.
I like this Digimon fanwiki called ‘wikimon’. It has a whole detailed list of every evolution a Digimon has. Plus all their attacks, weapons and the materials their armor/body is made of
The cwcki is definitely the most engaging, you read through it thinking that there's no way it's true. But alas, a quick search proves you wrong, and then you get sucked deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole
Shoutout to the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure wiki, incredibly thorough with both Jojo and the author’s other works, pages going over references to and in the series, galleries of a ton of the series art, and its not a nightmare to navigate on mobile
I absolutely love the jojo wiki and personally believe it’s the best wiki on the internet because of how comprehensively it covers JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure as a series, with in-depth pages for each and every thing, even the individual chapters
They have transcripts to most Araki interviews which is very welcome as a source to combat people lying about the series with fake facts that no one bothers to look into. There is still one missing last I checked, one interview that supposedly was where Araki said he intended for Lisa Lisa to beat Kars' ass a lot more than in the final version but the editors didn't want that. Still not sure if that one is real but it was cited there.
I really enjoy the Wiki Biosector01, a wiki dedicated specifically to Bionicle. It uses its own domain rather than being hosted on fandom, and does a fantastic job cataloguing and citing the most niche of Bionicle lore. It's been quite useful for my own endeavors in the community when working on lore for fan projects or just looking for details I didn't know. Even if you're not big into Bionicle I recommend checking it out to enjoy the site layout and UI!
the dustloop wiki is really good to me. theres jokes for a lot of character attacks that is just a treat with all the raw data you get. I also think kiranico was invaluable to monster hunter players back in the day.
The UESP is a pretty good wiki, it's got most things on the lore and, for skyrim at least, it's got breakdowns of every single interior with every single item in said interior.
Hell its even got a page about Oblivion's broken leveling system 😂 But yeah it has taught me a lot about Morrowind's mechanics and general lore. I've been stuck on so many quests I had to resort to UESP for help.
a game on roblox called lumber tycoon 2 has a very dedicated wiki with every bug, item, mechanic, or any other corner of a game you could think of documented. every dialogue of every character is down, it’s pretty solid.
I really like going to the Super Mario Wiki since it has basically everything, it has all the characters in the entire Mario series, even obscure ones. And the funniest part is, I found out the signs in Mario Galaxy are actually characters instead of objects as shown on the character page. And whoever created the Homestar Runner Wiki is the true Homestar Runner fan.
I quite like Bulbapedia and MMKB (Mega Man Knowledge Base) myself lol; just great wikis all around filled with tons of information, and it's always just fun for me to go through them just to see something random, even if I'm just looking into something I already know Also these aren't ones I tend to look into very often, but the Super Mario Wiki, Sonic News Network, and the Kirby wiki are also very nice too, and aren't a bad way to look at something from each of those franchises whether I have the itch for it or somethin'
cybershell, i love this video. recently ive watched through nearly every piece of homestar runner content and ive used the wiki extremely often. the show means a lot to me so having such a dedicated resource for homestar runner information has been truly great. its a really amazing wiki.
Some of my favorite wikis include: the spongebob fanon wiki that basically writes custom seasons of the show, going to such extreme heights that the show is being written to last for literal centuries the Spongebob S wiki, a wiki about a now deleted crossover fanfic between Spongebob, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Godzilla, Pretty Cure, and Mortal Kombat. I want to archive as much of it as I can as it is endearingly off the wall. the mips hole wiki. A wiki centered around "every copy of mario 64 is personalized" type shit but to the utmost extreme. It's a compilation of tons of random things ppl have crafted from that weird genre of mario 64 stuff, like a fucking weather system, new enemies, new floors of the castle, an oni that patrols Peach's Castle, a Dorrie boss fight, its all just so fascinating how people have turned mario 64 into a canvas for weird horror.

A few of my favorite wikis
Stardew Valley's wiki is mostly written by Eric Barone, the game's developer, and is accurate to the point of speedrunners and challenge runners going by information on the wiki over their own memory
The Ultrakill wiki is awash with jokes after a big RUclipsr made a joke about editing the wiki to change the lore
The Super Mario Wiki is notoriously thorough to the point that when the official Super Mario Encyclopedia came out it had several entries that were partially or fully copied from the wiki, all of these instances of copying are documented on the wiki.
"runners going by information on the wiki over their own memory" What thats absolutley the reverse of the current reality?? For YEARS the admins have refused to change shit because speedrunners discovered them. "The Wiki is right" is literally a meme at this point???
"all of these instances of copying are documented on the wiki." lol
Mario Wiki is fantastic, I love how they list the references to previous games on every game’s page.
Concerned Ape made the wiki himself? Massive respect honestly
Barone is based for essentially writing his documentation in a wiki format and making it public
TMBW is great!
Hunters & Collectors also has a wiki like this, as does NIN. I’m so glad that there are fans living their best life like this, especially when it comes to listening to demos 😂
Weezerpedia is also good
They have pages for live versions of songs from a live CD they sold twice at shows in 1994.
expeeeremental fiiiiiilm
Logopedia is one of my personal favourites, because they have literally every logo known to man documented on it, the designers of said logos, and how the logo has evolved over time.
The Old School Runescape Wiki has to be my favourite, a wiki so essential that they baked a "lookup on wiki" function into the game's UI. It's not just useful and comprehensive, it's also right up there with the dwarf fortress wiki as one of the most entertaining things to read out of context. Just smash the random page button a few times, you won't regret it.
Came here to say the runescape wikis too
I was about to write up a good summary of the OSRS Wiki (RS3 has just a good wiki too since it's a sister site).
How do i like the game, idk what to do nor what i could want to do, im lost.

Glad to see people appreciate it as much as I do
@@hereniho That’s in the gallery.
Shoutout to the Chinese variant of the wiki just for being way more detailed than the western counterpart for some reason
Thanks for telling me about this, it will be a resourceful tool.
Ah, I remember that website. It was like a fever dream for my oblivious 10 year old ESL brain.

The Mario Wiki deserves some credit for how well put together it all is. It was a pretty invaluable resource for my Yoshi's Island video. Each stage had its own small article. I also appreciate that it's lacking the Fandom stink a lot of other large wikis have.

That’s my choice. I feel like I learn something new every time I look at it.
TCRF is lacking beta content for a lot of obscure of games though. But it’s a good resource overall
@@Dylan-xx2tk what im surprised about is people getting into fights over wikis at all
@@dachel683 It's rather surprising at first, but once it happens a handful of times it just becomes unfortunately ordinary.
Wiki's, no matter if independent or FANDOM supported, are still driven by ordinary people. There should be no type of drama at all between Wiki's... but then again, we aren't the only two communities with a history. Things like this just happen. Different people, different ideas, clashing interests... etc.

I was going to say this. There’s even a page compiling all of the people who have worked on the series. They’re super dedicated!
jojowiki writers would get their own little stands all about gathering in-depth information about people.

The Smash Wiki is an amazingly comprehensive wiki on the whole series, documenting every character and changes made to them, single moves that each character has usually with their own individual page, weird glitches, single player modes, irl events and players (yes, which includes controversy) and more.

The They Might Be Giants wiki (This Might Be a Wiki) has:
Every show they've ever played over the last fourty years listed - including the amount of wiki editors that attended.
A unique entry for the history and context of every song, both released and unreleased, alongside fan interpretations of the song.
Guitar, bass and drum tabs for EVERY song, in case you want to learn how to play them.
Info on every project the Johns have ever worked on outside of TMBG (I've learned so much about Flansburgh's work as a music video director!)
It's just...so much information, and so lovingly put together!

it can not be understated how important wikis are because nowadays a lot of information on subjects are being locked behind paywalls or make you Have to join a discord to get access to documentation which makes me personally very upset. Making it so you have to join a discord to get information that's hidden is so bizarre to me
so much video game stuff that would have been a gameFAQs text document 15 years ago is now either 75% ads on a Fandom-owned site or in some discord like you said
Yea. As someone who refuses to use discord it's kind of a bummer how much shit is 'paywalled' by it.
The problem is a lot of the time the info is confidently incorrect or incomplete or biased but nowadays its treated like an actual encyclopedia
@@BB-848-VAC y'know why? cause editing is usually free and anyone can do it. very rarely will you look up the wiki for something that *no one* knows about. And hey, if you know stuff that isn't documented, you can always make sure no one is gonna be in the dark like you, right?
@@SoupwithSeafood A wiki is a reliable and trusted source, most of the time. And it collects all the information onto one website, so there you go.
(The closest he gets is holding a whisk in yes, wrestling.) However, he does hold a spoon in Homestar Ruiner, as he mixes the Jela-Ton into the pool water.”
Also, you got the official Sonic the Hedgehog account to both seemingly accidental reference Homestar Runner and refer to you as the lore master in one tweet?! That’s some neva-forgive action right there.
My favorite HRWiki moment is Homestar making a joke about rednecks that made no sense then saying, "Bwahahaha! dey do not weaw showts." And there was an argument over whether he said "Shorts" or "Shirts".
@@reillymcwriting Yeah, that one’s good too. Did they ever even really resolve that? I remember it just being noted at the bottom of the page.
My favorite aspect of the Homestar wiki is the transcript for an unreleased cartoon called Soap Box Doiby. The Chaps came across the unfinished text at one point and just uploaded it for people to read.
There’s also “Sbemail 136 Alternate Versions” and “Proposed Peasant’s Quest Sequels.”
I'm glad you found some way to immortalize being called the Loremaster while also getting the Sonic cast to answer a Homestar Runner reference.
I love browsing TV Tropes, even though i mostly just look at the pages on video games. They can have some really interesting trivia on there
Tv tropes is great! I love discovering things through it and just getting loads of ideas from reading random trop- Whoops FUCKING 20 tabs opened send help i can't stop clicking on hyperlinks
Finally somebody said it!
TV Tropes is mostly good but the people running the site are like fucking insane and make some of the worst changes known to man
@@rando843 Hence why I prefer the All the Tropes alternate.
1:20 As someone who forked a wiki from Fandom a while ago, THANK YOU.
Bing-bing!
@VisualPlugin the Multlingual Programmer ....instead of realising no one under 69 has seen ads online in 20 years?
@VisualPlugin the Multlingual Programmer I think he's referring to the fact that adblock has been a thing since 2005.
Try Breeze Wiki, its an alternative frontend for Fandom!
Self hosting is a big step. If you choose to take it, it would be cool i love to see self-hosted stuff. But there's a lot of Free Wiki Hosting services as well, there's more options than DIY vs Fandom.
you run the funniest site on the net?
niwa (nintendo independent wiki alliance) is overall pretty snazzy, but wikirby to me personally is a wonderful and charming wiki with a great community backed with it. i've edited the wiki for about over two years now and it has been such a joy to see it grow back from the years it was desolate (it was founded in 2010 but only seemed to steadily pick up more traction around 2017-2019). it's lighthearted in places, while still taking its subject matter seriously. i love everyone there so much, and couldn't have asked for a better first community to become a part of... i met my very best, closest friend as well as other good friends there ❤
seriously, check it out. the community works hard to make it thorough and welcoming, with the coverage and userbase increasing consistently. it's one of the best communities on the net, in my opinion~
Agreed~!
So true.
The MUGEN database.
1. I'm not biased.
2. It counts.
As soon as I started this video I was telling myself "man I hope he talks about Hrwiki, that's the best wiki on the internet forsure." I can't express how excited I got when you revealed it
Homestarrunner influenced me so much as an artist, this rules.
Well, there you go
The dustloops wiki is a great wiki that covers most of the popular anime fighting games. It's has good information but also plenty of humor to go along with it. Also who could forget the legendary character bios on the super combo (formally srk) kof 98 character pages, definitely worth a read.
so true! love dustloop and supercombo, also mizumi
I love that they have a page for a shitty Fist of the North Star game that has a move that is so poorly programmed that it has a chance to make the arcade cabinet burst into flames
"Unfortunately, no longer blows out your speakers" - Tyrant Rave, Xrd
@Toxic-Pyro how do you program a game so badly it not only breaks the game, but breaks the machine itself?
@@Bighomie39 The move hits “an infinite amount of times” and it causes the machine to get very angry. It can either crash the game, softlock the game until the timer runs out, or in rare case it causes the machine to overheat and burst into flames
8:53 "Pirating this knowledge" is such a delightfully dystopic sentence. You unlocked new future DRM fears in me, thanks!
Nah, this has been a racket since the textbook publishers got all huffy.
@@XanthinZarda I was thinking more: "You need to pay 4.99$ to unlock the CPR knowledge to save your grandma"
0:36 next time you see that, look up how much money Wikimedia and Jimbo Wales make.
Absolutely based take
That's awesome and embodies everything Bionicle stands for. To hell with Fandom and their shitty ways.
Holy shit he's back and he's now doing content everyone's favourite video game. Wikipedia.
I think I played that game back in highschool. Though they still hadn't patched the whole "valid source" glitch that teachers had.
Indeed, Sakamoto-san
So true Sakamoto
@@planescapedwhy would they get involved in a third party client? Not Wikimedias fault the teachers can’t update to adapt to modern tech.
I’d prefer they fix the ‘citation needed’ bug first. Seems every day I get on I find at least three or four, sometimes in one article!
Do better, Wikipedia
@@planescapedFuck those teachers there are some dedicated motherfuckers who just sit there and edit wikis for free. Valid source my ass.
"Yes, I know you clicked this video to hear me talk about funny wikis and now I'm explaining the differences between the DVD and RUclips versions of a two decade old flash cartoon, if you have a problem with that; too bad, you can't leave now, the video is almost over. Sunk cost fallacy."
LMAO, this cracked me up, definitely one of the best things I ever heard this year.
Any day with a new Cybershell video is a good day.
He's back
YAY HES BACK
It's a good day to have a good day
Runescape / Oldschool Runescape / Runescape Classic have a great wiki.
The Boss Baby Wiki admin here, haven't watched the video yet but I'm excited to see the wiki get the attention it deserves
:(
It's probably not a true contender for the best wiki, but I've always appreciated how thorough the Spongebob wiki is.
I didn't even read them all the way through (just the first few pages), the crossover choices were just hilarious and I was in total shock that this existed.
there's some really in depth articles for things you have never heard of on there, it's nuts

I'm surprised there's no mention of Encyclopedia Dramatica
Probably because it’s basically an hate site
My favourite wiki is whichever one helps me with the game I'm currently playing, especially if it isn't on fucking Fandom Wikia.
I absolutely love the jojo wiki and personally believe it’s the best wiki on the internet because of how comprehensively it covers JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure as a series, with in-depth pages for each and every thing, even the individual chapters
The staff is truly the definition of dedicated.
Dustloop and Mizuumi are such perfect wikis and I wish that other genres of games other than fighting games had such comprehensive and practice wikis.
I really enjoy the sonichu wiki. It's amazing how much you can know about an individual that you never met.

I've been stuck on so many quests I had to resort to UESP for help.
it even catalogues popular mods like Tamriel Rebuilt
a game on roblox called lumber tycoon 2 has a very dedicated wiki with every bug, item, mechanic, or any other corner of a game you could think of documented. every dialogue of every character is down, it’s pretty solid.
This Cybershell video contains another reference to the Homestar Runner Wiki.
I quite like Bulbapedia and MMKB (Mega Man Knowledge Base) myself lol; just great wikis all around filled with tons of information, and it's always just fun for me to go through them just to see something random, even if I'm just looking into something I already know
Also these aren't ones I tend to look into very often, but the Super Mario Wiki, Sonic News Network, and the Kirby wiki are also very nice too, and aren't a bad way to look at something from each of those franchises whether I have the itch for it or somethin'
cybershell, i love this video. recently ive watched through nearly every piece of homestar runner content and ive used the wiki extremely often. the show means a lot to me so having such a dedicated resource for homestar runner information has been truly great. its a really amazing wiki.
Surprised the CWCKI was not mentioned. Like I know we'd want to all forget someone exist, but it deserves credit for how in-depth it is.
Some of my favorite wikis include:
the spongebob fanon wiki that basically writes custom seasons of the show, going to such extreme heights that the show is being written to last for literal centuries
the Spongebob S wiki, a wiki about a now deleted crossover fanfic between Spongebob, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Godzilla, Pretty Cure, and Mortal Kombat.
