Thank you for this. It's pretty much perfect. I wanted to let you know that the images aren't loading in your players guide, which is too bad. This is a perfect resource for getting started. I hope you are able to fix it, because you obviously put so much care and effort into it already. All the best! Thanks again.
I think this is the first comment I've ever made in a RUclips video...fantastic stuff, just wanted to publically give some kudos. Your videos convinced me to get Foundry
You sir, are a scholar and a gent! It was one of your video's that hooked me as a DM into Foundry....and your videos that taught me hw much potential there was to this tool and you just keep supplying absolute premium quality tutorials for how to use this lovely bit of software! Thank you so much sir!!!
Thank you for the video. I'm the (P2e) GM, but new to Foundry (which I will be raving about for weeks). Now I know about right-clicking the tabs to pop out, double-clicking popouts to minimize them, how to rotate tokens without going into the menu, and probably more that will come back to me as I play.
The best tutorial not only on Foundry but a tutorial, in general, I've watched so far:D Thank you! Also, you have amazing voice, I envy your party a bit haha
So I am not her because my DM was raving about it :) My group plays on a different VTT but I wanted to try this and see how good it is. I was pretty lost so here I am watching your videos! I am liking it so far and hope to run a champagne on Foundry as soon as I am proficient in it thank you for a clear and understandable video
Once again, I really appreciate this video that you put together. I noted in 6:04 that you show a Wild Magic table. I'm not sure if this part of the SRD ... it would be tedious to create a rollable table for it. Can you share how you put together that Wild Magic table? Thanks!
I actually put together that roll table myself but VTTA's DnDBeyond Import module will let you import the 'Class' page from the Player's Handbook and will automatically create a roll table of the whole Wild Magic table. It does put it in under the title 'Effect' though which I've submitted as a parsing error in the Discord and may get fixed before you try and use it. If it doesn't it should still be in there and you can delete the other tables that it brings in!
How did you accomplish the square-grid movement path seen at 9:42? When I ctrl+click following your instructions in 0.8.9, I get non-whole-number one-dimensional movement paths that do not respect the grid. Did you use a module?
Your videos are so incredible, and when my group makes the switch they will certainly be an incredible asset! One thing I've noticed by watching videos and playing around with the Web Demo is that certain measurement templates (for example, the 20ft radius for Fireball) looks a little.. different than I'm used to. Not sure exactly how to describe it, but the template I saw appear for your fireball is 9 tiles wide and tall. The one we use in our group is an 8 tiles wide/tall circle, so it seems like Foundry is giving them a larger AoE? Is there a way to modify how the templates appear when you use the measurement tool? I hope this makes sense, and thanks again for your incredible content!
Thank you so much for the kind words! So the template thing is a little complicated. Geometry was my worst math subject so I'm not really qualified to give a good answer here but my understanding is that RAW says that spell templates should have their point of origin inside the center of a square and not on the edge. Since it's in the center you wind up 'losing' a square of what would be part of the spell's area of effect and that's what brings in the 9th square. When I had it explained to me I got it, but only just barely haha. I hope that's enough to give you a bit of an idea at least. In terms of replacing the template you can change template size either after its been placed by swapping to the Template tool (the right angle ruler in the left hand sidebar) and double clicking on the template. You can also edit spells to have a different template shape by clicking 'edit' on the spell in the character sheet and going to its details. Hopefully that's enough to get you where you want to be!
This is looking very nice. Shall keep my eye on this, looks like a very nice program that contains some immersive tabletop features that are lacking in other programs. Am currently a Fantasy Grounds GM and have used FG for years, and am also using FG:Unity at the moment, of which I hope it will contain at least some of these map functions, so it is nice to see some worthy competition (and choices) that is showing how things should be done. Keep up the good work!
I've never actually gotten to use Fantasy Grounds before but I know there's some good stuff in it that Foundry could learn from especially regarding combat automation. Competition is always good so I hope they continue to improve as well! If you ever choose to join us on the dark side there is a developer who has a beta version of a Fantasy Grounds converter to Foundry :). Thanks so much for your kind words!
Thanks for this! Been debating picking this up but was having troubles finding any decent videos showing how everything worked and looked (barring the dev vids, but I'd rather see a normal person work through everything). You need to get yourself a referral link that people can buy it through ;D
Thank you so much for this video. You explanations are clear and easy to follow. Also, your voice tone/sound is fantastic. Your mic is super crisp. I gotta ask.. which mic is it?? lol
I'm so happy to hear that! It's a Shure SM7B connected to a Motu M2 (which is awesome) to get it to my computer. I'm a bit of a gear junkie so the channel has been a good excuse to dive into it :D. You can get a similar sound with much less expensive microphones though. Podcastage on RUclips has some great videos on microphones at different price points if you're into that kinda thing :).
This video is great, thank you for making it. I'm wondering if there might be a "crash course" or "fly-by" version that you make that is for those players that won't watch a full 20 minutes? Or even for the people who are starting a session, and didn't realize it was on a new platform so other people are waiting? IDK, maybe there isn't really a demand, but it was something that occurred to me. I'm finding your videos to all be very helpful while I get up to speed with Foundry.
There's a few minutes of content that can be skipped in this video (the webcam/chat section) and I tried to put both of them in the back end of the video so people could stop watching and not miss anything important. Without those sections the video is 17 minutes long and I'm not sure how much shorter I could make it while still covering the software with enough depth to be useful. I could make a simple 'This is how you move and open your character sheet' video but I don't know if that covers enough to be really useful. Out of curiosity what would you say is the bare minimum amount that you would want your players to know? I may not make a YT video about it but I could possibly record something and release it on Twitter or something.
@@EncounterLibrary I think you are right about the depth of what is covered, although I think you could trim down on some of the ruler tool depth a little bit. It might end up being more about how you present the info. In all realness though, you re providing a valuable public service with your videos, and players are lucky to have this resource from you!
Selecting targets is just what that second tool I selected does. In core Foundry all it really does is apply an icon around the token you've targeted. Some modules make use of the targeting system to automate combat but it's not something you'll need to worry about for core Foundry.
Since there's so many different ways that people can host their Foundry server I didn't want to get into that for a player video. If you're having trouble with your players accessing your world through the 'Internet' invitation link though be sure to reach out in the #installation-support channel on the Foundry Discord and you'll get some help. It's most likely a port forwarding issue. You might be able to solve it using this Foundry support guide that they put together as well: prezi.com/view/FeiO42h6cxdmoIsZvUlt/ Also, if you want an easier solution be sure to check out my video on the Forge which is a great hosting platform that removes all the headaches from getting your players connected.
Hi Sir, your videos made our group buy Foundry. We are still learning so much on Dnd and on Foundry. If you don’t mind, do you have the lay on hands pool automatic or do you change every time you acces the pool. Ty so much!!
I personally handle Lay on Hands manually but you could automate it with a macro that pops up a dialogue box asking how much you want to heal someone. The folks in #macro-polo in the Foundry Discord could help you with that!
Thank you for the videos, I want to create a shop/store, one that pops up when you click on the map. Do you have a video on how to create it in foundry VTT??
Hey! Question from a long-time GM VERY new to and inexperienced with Foundry. I've been using Foundry for Trouble in Otari and Abomination Vaults. One thing I noticed that I'd like to "turn off" is how Foundry displays health changes on the monsters. (I.e. if a monster takes damage, the players see the red damage amount appear on-screen "-8" or whatever... Similarly when the monster is healed, they see a green positive health gain.) What I'm finding is that Pathfinder 2e is a VERY deadly / "swingy" game (compared to D&D 5e, for example)... with that in mind, I find myself occasionally needing to tweak monsters during fights (especially "boss" and "mini-boss" monsters.) My players are seeing my tweaks if I modify the monster's hp (they see it as damage) and ask "where did that damage come from," etc. Is there a way to "turn off" that reporting of health changes, etc., so player's can't see? (Essentially "putting the GM screen back up," in table-top terms?) ... I feel like Foundry is showing the player's too much!) -- thanks!
I noticed that there were several actions for applying damage (double, half, etc) but didnt see the one that will probably be the most important and that is adding more combat die when you crit, which of course is not a raw doubling ...
I believe the half and double damage are more useful for things like vulnerability and resistance. If you crit on the attack roll when you press the 'Damage' button it will give you an option for 'normal' or 'critical' and will do the correct dice rolls :D. You can also hold the 'alt' key when clicking on 'Damage' and it will roll as a critical or while holding 'shift' to roll normally without the popup.
If you ever re-record this, I think the section in the middle where you're describing combat basics needs to be slower and more step by step. I couldn't follow along with how fast you were going and what each thing happening was. I'm okay though, just for next time.
I wish, near the end - when you went into combat - instead of narrating the keycombos you're using, just show them as bigger pictures (animated/...) and just go through combat slow motion, while the pictures can be absorbed and we enjoy the effects of a nicely cast fireball better ;-)
So the double damage button will double the value and is more useful for things like vulnerability to certain damage types. If you use the 'Critical' damage button it will apply the doubling correctly where only the rolled dice are doubled.
this seems to be interesting, the whole series is well worth a sub. The problem is that the demo available for players on FoundryVTT.com is very very buggy. All kinds of cryptic errors, that barely let me do anything (no dice rolling, no movement, faulty map loading etc.) - very disappointing (but of course not your fault)....
I believe there were some recent updates to the player demo server which might have improved the situation for you though I hadn't heard people having that many issues before hand. There are also a few other demo servers that you can try if one is having issues. These are GM Demos for example: dnd5e.doomnaught.com/join sws.doomnaught.com/join Hopefully one of those will work better for you. If not there might be an issue with your browser disabling WebGL or something like that so if you still have issues please let me know!
Hmm if I try to log on as GM and Player at the same time... The player can not click the Items "Attack", and "Damage" Roll buttons... From my GM Tab it works... I don't find an option for that permission or is that a bug?
If you'd like a real world example of going through combat I've recently livestreamed the first two parts of Clash at the Kobold Cauldron (available here on RUclips) and you can fast forward to the parts where I run combat. I think you're right that with all the complexities of combat it may be useful to have a more detailed view of how it works. Eventually I'd like to do a combat automation video going over CUB and Minor QoL and some other things but that's a big bear of a project and there's lots of other things I'm trying to cover in the mean time.
@@EncounterLibrary It isn't what *I* need - I have it figured out. Your stuff is plenty good enough for GM's, who have their install to play with. It is what my *players* need - except when my server is up for training or game sessions with them, they don't have a place to practice (the demo server, with view limitations enabled, makes it hard for them to see and understand what is going on, plus there is no combat.) And having GM stuff show up on the screen just confuses them. I have been conducting training sessions with them, which take about two hours to run through (including a 45 minute combat session).
As a new player, who doesn't know much about D&D - how do I find a game to play with Foundry? It's much easier with Roll20 and their game searching system or FG with their forums.
The owner of the license (gm) uses port sharing and a sharable link from the right-hand bar. The sharing link should be just above the log out button. You can share that link with your players and set an access key (password) for players to login to your game. Once your players are in, the fun can begin!
You can't with the default Foundry set up but there is a module called Maestro and with it you can assign sounds to certain attacks which I think would cover what you're trying to do :D.
@@EncounterLibrary It does get even better :). today I tried to game my first foundry game. I sent the invitation link (the one for internet) to my player. He copied pasted it to his browser adress line but he could not log in to my game. His browser said time is running out and that he does not get answer from the link site. (I guess with "link site" it means my pc) Did I something wrong? Is there any special preparation I have to undertake with my pc before foundry works properly and before players can log in by clicking on the link I provide?
@@klauszoidberg999 Some internet providers and some routers require a couple changes to enable people to connect to your computer. The basics for how to do that are here: foundryvtt.com/article/port-forwarding/ but it would probably be worth while to jump into the Foundry Discord in the #troubleshooting channel where someone can give you some more specific help. If you don't want to go through the process of port forwarding you can also host through a service like The Forge or Foundry Server and it will handle everything for you. I'm sorry about the issue you're running into!
The default audio/video in Foundry and Roll20 will probably be pretty similar as they're both peer-to-peer based systems so the performance will depend heavily on the connection quality that all of the players have. One benefit to Foundry though is that you can integrate a Jitsi server into the audio/video system which will route everyone's audio/video through a server and will greatly reduce the strain on everyone's connection and in my experience greatly improves the quality. I have a video on hosting it yourself if you're interested. Compared to Discord (which isn't peer-to-peer) both Foundry and Roll20 are probably worse (so long as Discord doesn't go down). I like using the built-in system though because it keeps everything in one window and its easier for my players to look at each and eases role play (at least in my opinion). The set up/complexity definitely makes Discord a really appealing option though and I play in a game that uses it and it's not a problem at all!
I didnt know that foundry also has a video option. I looked at it on the documentation, but I am totally lost. I am not a good pc afficionado, so I have no idea how to install the video even after reading the documentation carefully. Its full of professional speak. I would like to ask you and maybe I am not alone in my request: could you make one of your next tutorials a step-by-step process how to install video especially for pc dummies? That would be great. (For example I have absolutely no idea why I need a firefox browser SSL (or whatever this thing is called) when I dont even use a browser to play foundry?)
@@drunemeton yes. but I have no idea what Matt is talking about. Sorry to sound like a total noob, but these things with servers, host services and cloudworking is way over my level of knowledge. I am a simply pc user who has almost none experience with all this power user stuff. My ideal idea video/chat system for foundry would be a simple button which I can click to activate it. Then foundry uses automatically my pc camera and my headset. The same button for my players when they log into my game. Additionally maybe a button with a couple of preferences and how to blend in fantasy background pictures behind my portrait. Thats all I would need to be happy.
I had the same problem, don't worry. You can use the video options without having to host anything online yourself. You will probably want to port forward so players can connect to your PC when you want to play (this will be different depending on your internet provider's settings) but will require you to go into the settings of your router. Additionally you need to make a certificate that tells your PC its ok to not be as save as it could possibly be and your friends are not virusses. It's kind of a I know the risk I'm taking but I'm doing it anyway step so If anything does go wrong it's your own fault. What I found unclear about the instructions on the Foundry website is that it doesnt clearly state what to do with the Key once you have it. It needs to go into the Foundry/config directery. One should be the key and the other should be the certificate. Hopefully this helps :)
sorry to bother you again, but does anyone know if is there an easy way to tell the initiative tracker to roll a d6 instead of a d20 for initiative? (simple world builder) thanx for any hint
You're not a bother at all! The combat initiative formula is stored in a CONFIG variable (CONFIG.Combat.initiative to be specific). I think you should be able to make a macro or a module that does basically this: CONFIG.Combat.initiative = { formula: "1d6", decimals :2 }; and I believe that should work. Let me know if it doesn't!
@@EncounterLibrary cool! thank you very much. I have a friend who is more than me with computers. I will ask him, if he can put this into the config variable doculment of foundry. I will tell you if it works.
I'm unable to have my players create or choose a character when they connect. The only way that I can have a "player" select a character is if they are set as gamemaster. Only the "gamemaster" seems to be able to select from the characters that I've created. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Right clicking on the player name and selecting player configuration comes up blank and can only change the player color.
Nevermind just figured it out. In case anyone is having this issue: You add players to the game, create or add actors in the actors tab, then right click and click on "configure permission". Now you can assign any number or actors to a player.
@@EncounterLibrary Thanks for saying that, it's literally my first vtt as I'm pretty new to DnD. Everyone keeps comparing it to Roll20 but I don't know how accurate that is also hearing that it's become outdated. I'm excited to see what the modding community can do with Foundry. Thanks for making these videos, they've really helped to learn the software, I'm almost ready to host my first game!
@@Mars9982 That's awesome! Roll20 is a good service with a lot of system support built in but it definitely was made before a lot of modern web technologies came into being and the architecture and new feature development pace definitely shows that I think. It can definitely still get the job done if some aspects of it wind up working better for you of course :). Since D&D is new to you and you're starting with a VTT I'd love to hear if there's anything that's particularly confusing for you or that you'd like to know (whether it's Foundry related or D&D related)? I've been debating whether it's worth making a D&D basics series for people looking to start DMing but who don't know how to start or that DMs could give to their players that teaches them how to use the character sheet, what you can do in combat etc.. One of my major goals with the channel is to make it less intimidating by demystifying how things work or at least getting all the info in one place for you.
Helpful. So helpful. I appreciate the written reference because you move around and speak way too fast for me. Introducing foundry to our game was destroying the fun for me. Now I feel like I might actually be able to enjoy playing again.
Bizarre that you choose to use a visually complicated checkerboard floor pattern to demonstrate with, but aside from the tough visuals... a helpful tutorial.
Hey Jason, there's no need to buy it if you're just a player. Only one person in the group needs to own the software and everyone else can join for free :).
I'd encourage you to join the Foundry VTT Discord where there's a #gm-seeking-players channel and a #players-seeking-group channel! If you're interested in playing D&D but not necessarily in Foundry then checking the Roll20 forums and DnDBeyond's Discord might also be worthwhile. There are also subreddits for finding games as well if you'd like to stay off of Discord for whatever reason.
Hello, it's a nice video for my players! Can I add subtitle and upload it to a Chinese video website? All my players are in China, it's hard for them to use RUclips.
Sure. If you DM me on Twitter (@EncounterLib) I can send you the high quality original so it won't get recompressed. Feel free to download it if its easier for you to do that way though.
How to set this up as a client WITHOUT a license? As a player, but not the server. If someone else has already gotten a license and is hosting the game, there should be no reason why I would need to also pay for a license to download the VTT.
I appreciate the instructional video, I was looking into this VTT. Foundry has some great features, but I can't say that a good UI seems to be among them. My group uses FantasyGrounds, and it will determine hits and let you roll damage straight to a target or multiple targets, or automatically roll saving throws for a spell or similar. Opening a dozen dialogue boxes for each attack, and having to manually input damage on everything, is just absurd.
Out of curiosity what system do you play? I just bought the Pathfinder 2nd Edition core rulebook so that I can try it out in Foundry to get a better feel for how it works in different systems but I'm not sure what most people are playing. Thanks!
@@EncounterLibrary I just started to play Pathfinder 1st edition using Foundry (first session was 2 days ago) and I'm preparing for Vampire the Masquerade 5th edition. But really the main reason your video is not system agnostic is the time you spent on the character sheet, the rest was real nice.
@@Minillewella Ah that's good to know! How is the Pathfinder 1E system? I've mostly heard about the 2nd Edition system so I'm not too sure how well the first one is fleshed out. And how will you run Vampire out of curiosity? Is one of the other systems similar enough to make it work or will you just be using it for maps and/or chat?
@@EncounterLibrary Pf1e is usable with some tinkering. I can't really compare with 5e or pf2e as I haven't tried them but I understand there's a lot less automatization compared to those systems. For Vampire, I'm not there yet but as it's a theater of the mind kind of game, I only need to make a usable character sheet and a compendium and I should be OK I'll develop more things as I need them (and I'm waiting for the new 7.x dice API to improve on the special dice roller mod I'm relying on at the moment)
Hey Jean, if you would be interested in translating it that would be fine by me! I'm happy to provide you with my script or anything else that I can do as well if that's helpful.
You'll need to go to the 'Invitation Links' button in the 'Settings' tab of the right hand sidebar. The 'Internet' link is the one you'll want to send to your players. You may have to set up port forwarding for them all to be able to connect though. If you're not familiar with what that is you can reach out in the Foundry discord and the folks there will help you get it set up!
@@NightBlade58 There's lots of benefits to running Foundry locally (like that it's free) but some people's ISPs restrict port forwarding or they don't want to deal with the set up. Some folks also have poor internet connections and so serving the map files, the token images, and music can put a significant strain on their connection. If they host in the cloud the server will handle all of the complicated stuff and will serve the files which would be much faster than them trying to upload it to all of their players. I've got a video on the Forge which is one of the cloud hosting providers (I'm not nor have I ever been paid by them) partnered with Foundry VTT but there's also Foundry Server and Molten Hosting as well.
@@NightBlade58 It all depends on your set up. You can easily try running it on your own machine and having your players connect as a test. If things seem to be working just fine with loading and music etc. (after any potential port forwarding issues are dealt with) you can stick with that. If you run into issues or can't get the networking side figured out it's easy to get started with any of the hosting options. I try to be familiar with all the common set ups so I've run it locally, on the Forge, and on a VPS that I set up and honestly the only thing that changes is how everybody connects to the game and improvements for people who have low bandwidth/poor connections. If you don't have those issues then you won't notice that much of a difference.
It looks very much like roll20 Like at 09:30 "movement works differently than on roll20." Yeah, if you can tell in the few cases where it is different, it proves that it just is a lazy copy.
I mentioned Roll20 because I know a number of people are converting from it because they prefer Foundry. I also couldn't disagree more strongly with the argument that it is a lazy copy. That said, if the software isn't for you I hope that you have a great experience with whatever you do choose to use even if that's Roll20.
This is a guide for how to use Foundry for players not a DM hosting guide. For players there's nothing they need to do other than connect to the game with a link the DM sends them. If you're the DM and you want to host Foundry on your personal computer (and not using a cloud service or a hosting provider) then you need to run Foundry, go to the settings tab in the right hand sidebar, click on 'Invitation Links' and copy the 'Internet' link and send it to your players. I would recommend having them connect before your actual session though to see if there are any issues. You may need to port forward for them to connect properly. There is some information about that in the Foundry troubleshooting Prezi here: prezi.com/view/FeiO42h6cxdmoIsZvUlt/ Since it varies by router and some ISPs have more specific settings that they need I would recommend reaching out in the Foundry Discord in the #installation-support channel if you have issues with setting up port forwarding.
Just to make sure I'm following, you're having an issue adding cantrips to your character in Foundry? If so the process should be as simple as opening the Spells compendium and dragging the spell onto your character sheet. Is that not working for you? If it's not I would recommend jumping in the Foundry discord and posting a question there because it will be a quicker debugging process but feel free to post back here and I'll do my best!
If you prefer reading or want a quick reference for your players check out the Player's Guide here: www.encounterlibrary.com/collection/players-guide/ it's complete with screenshots and WebMs to make it fast and easy for your players to follow along!

Pretty straightforward, ty!
How did you accomplish the square-grid movement path seen at 9:42? When I ctrl+click following your instructions in 0.8.9, I get non-whole-number one-dimensional movement paths that do not respect the grid. Did you use a module?
Just found you and you have some amazing and instructive videos. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge
Another great job. Thanks for all the tips.
Excellent video
really great video, would love to see something of this quality and speed/length for each VTT
Shared with my players
likewise
thanks for this video ... (from a GM who now has to prepare 1 thing less)
1:58 what is "select targets" and where will I need that?
Selecting targets is just what that second tool I selected does. In core Foundry all it really does is apply an icon around the token you've targeted. Some modules make use of the targeting system to automate combat but it's not something you'll need to worry about for core Foundry.
Ok, I think you've just sold Foundry to me lol
I hope that you like it as much as I do if you try it!
I'd have loved this to start with how to sign into a DM's world haha. I'll come back once I get past that wall.
You might be able to solve it using this Foundry support guide that they put together as well: prezi.com/view/FeiO42h6cxdmoIsZvUlt/
Also, if you want an easier solution be sure to check out my video on the Forge which is a great hosting platform that removes all the headaches from getting your players connected.
Similarly when the monster is healed, they see a green positive health gain.)
What I'm finding is that Pathfinder 2e is a VERY deadly / "swingy" game (compared to D&D 5e, for example)... with that in mind, I find myself occasionally needing to tweak monsters during fights (especially "boss" and "mini-boss" monsters.) My players are seeing my tweaks if I modify the monster's hp (they see it as damage) and ask "where did that damage come from," etc.
Is there a way to "turn off" that reporting of health changes, etc., so player's can't see? (Essentially "putting the GM screen back up," in table-top terms?) ... I feel like Foundry is showing the player's too much!) -- thanks!
And nowadays it still evolving and becoming the leader - Roll20 is a goner I will not miss it
Thanks!
Where do you get tokens like those that show which way they're facing?
I noticed that there were several actions for applying damage (double, half, etc) but didnt see the one that will probably be the most important and that is adding more combat die when you crit, which of course is not a raw doubling ...
I believe the half and double damage are more useful for things like vulnerability and resistance. If you crit on the attack roll when you press the 'Damage' button it will give you an option for 'normal' or 'critical' and will do the correct dice rolls :D. You can also hold the 'alt' key when clicking on 'Damage' and it will roll as a critical or while holding 'shift' to roll normally without the popup.
Man, the George Clooney joke went right over my head on the first watch.
If you ever re-record this, I think the section in the middle where you're describing combat basics needs to be slower and more step by step. I couldn't follow along with how fast you were going and what each thing happening was. I'm okay though, just for next time.
Thank you so much for making chapters.
Dude, why are you calling me out in the first 15 seconds. DAMN! LOL
I can only call it out because I know that I did it as well :D
I wish, near the end - when you went into combat - instead of narrating the keycombos you're using, just show them as bigger pictures (animated/...) and just go through combat slow motion, while the pictures can be absorbed and we enjoy the effects of a nicely cast fireball better ;-)
This guy is awesome
Not being a D&D player the character sheet description was superfluous for a players guide to foundry.
Which mod do you have installed which shows the 3D dice roll?
That's the Dice So Nice module :).
THANK YOU
Does the "double damage" right click option work correctly for critical hits? (the entire damage should not be doubled)
These are GM Demos for example:
dnd5e.doomnaught.com/join
sws.doomnaught.com/join
Hopefully one of those will work better for you.
Hi! What game system is Foundry?
It is helpful. It might be more so if it were all in the context of a game, particularly it might help to go through combat MUCH more slowly.
Hi there, I think this might be missing the very start. Does a player need to download Foundry as well? how do they connect?
The owner of the license (gm) uses port sharing and a sharable link from the right-hand bar. The sharing link should be just above the log out button.
You can share that link with your players and set an access key (password) for players to login to your game.
Once your players are in, the fun can begin!
thank you. May I ask you if I can assign in foundry a sound effect to a fireball template? (or a graphical effect?)
You can't with the default Foundry set up but there is a module called Maestro and with it you can assign sounds to certain attacks which I think would cover what you're trying to do :D.
@@EncounterLibrary cool. Thank you very much "mr. Dwarfenpriest" :) (yes. I watched the whole 4h episode of your game with atropos - very amusing)
@@klauszoidberg999 I am sorry that you put yourself through that haha :D. I'm glad you had fun though!
How would you compare the audio/video of Foundry to Roll20 and Discord? On par, worse or better?
The set up/complexity definitely makes Discord a really appealing option though and I play in a game that uses it and it's not a problem at all!
can I use this on a projector?
I plug a Chromecast into my projector and cast to it.
what program do you use for dungeon making?
I use DungeonDraft to make my maps, I also have some videos on how to use it if you're interested :).
Your voice is too smooth!
What mic do you have?
It's a Shure SM7B that I have running into a Motu M2! The channel has been a great excuse to succumb to my long time tech gear habit haha.
Klaus Zoidberg Have you checked out: ruclips.net/video/uSLM9wASduU/видео.html ?
I have the same problem. why is it not as simple as in Roll20 ?
sorry to bother you again, but does anyone know if is there an easy way to tell the initiative tracker to roll a d6 instead of a d20 for initiative? (simple world builder) thanx for any hint
You're not a bother at all! The combat initiative formula is stored in a CONFIG variable (CONFIG.Combat.initiative to be specific). I think you should be able to make a macro or a module that does basically this:
CONFIG.Combat.initiative = { formula: "1d6", decimals :2 };
and I believe that should work.
I'm glad you were able to get this figured out!
I'm new to dming but I still got foundry because roll20 was just too janky and I didn't like the subscription paywalls
Bizarre that you choose to use a visually complicated checkerboard floor pattern to demonstrate with, but aside from the tough visuals... a helpful tutorial.
I came here to get the answer DO I need to buy it to play in a game?
Hey Jason, there's no need to buy it if you're just a player. Only one person in the group needs to own the software and everyone else can join for free :).
YEAH but how do you FIND a game to join if you do not own the software?
Can I play with you? I speak Chinese and English. I'm in Philippines. Same time zone as China. My WeChat is Garry_G89
Foundry requires HTTPS to make video and audio chat possible, could you make a guide how to make it work from local host, for free if possible? :)
How to set this up as a client WITHOUT a license? As a player, but not the server. If someone else has already gotten a license and is hosting the game, there should be no reason why I would need to also pay for a license to download the VTT.
You've probably already found an answer by now but, you don't have to buy it as a player. You connect in your web browser.
Immediately calling out the DMs who come to watch this before showing it to there players, huh.
Nice. A bit too 5e centric to show to my players as it would probably be too confusing for some of them, but a good video nonetheless.
@@Minillewella That's good to know! I'm glad at least the first half can be useful to other systems then :D.
You guessed correctly.
Hello, This video is amazing but my players don't speak English... I have to explain them everything. Would you be interested by French subtitles?
Hey Jean, if you would be interested in translating it that would be fine by me! I'm happy to provide you with my script or anything else that I can do as well if that's helpful.
Super dumb nooby question.... how do I connect other players to my game?
I can do localhost:30000 but that’s only for me
You'll need to go to the 'Invitation Links' button in the 'Settings' tab of the right hand sidebar. The 'Internet' link is the one you'll want to send to your players. You may have to set up port forwarding for them all to be able to connect though. If you're not familiar with what that is you can reach out in the Foundry discord and the folks there will help you get it set up!
@@EncounterLibrary so why would you do the cloud? Debating on how to do this
@@NightBlade58 There's lots of benefits to running Foundry locally (like that it's free) but some people's ISPs restrict port forwarding or they don't want to deal with the set up.
@@EncounterLibrary what would/you do? I don’t mind paying, but is it worth it?
It looks very much like roll20
Like at 09:30 "movement works differently than on roll20."
Yeah, if you can tell in the few cases where it is different, it proves that it just is a lazy copy.
I mentioned Roll20 because I know a number of people are converting from it because they prefer Foundry. I also couldn't disagree more strongly with the argument that it is a lazy copy. That said, if the software isn't for you I hope that you have a great experience with whatever you do choose to use even if that's Roll20.
the lazy copy with doors right ? :) 🤣
This shit is so much. Step by step what do I have to do to get my players in and start session zero?
This is a guide for how to use Foundry for players not a DM hosting guide. For players there's nothing they need to do other than connect to the game with a link the DM sends them. If you're the DM and you want to host Foundry on your personal computer (and not using a cloud service or a hosting provider) then you need to run Foundry, go to the settings tab in the right hand sidebar, click on 'Invitation Links' and copy the 'Internet' link and send it to your players.
I would recommend having them connect before your actual session though to see if there are any issues. You may need to port forward for them to connect properly. There is some information about that in the Foundry troubleshooting Prezi here: prezi.com/view/FeiO42h6cxdmoIsZvUlt/
Since it varies by router and some ISPs have more specific settings that they need I would recommend reaching out in the Foundry Discord in the #installation-support channel if you have issues with setting up port forwarding.
I cam here because I can't add my cantrips. And this guy dind't explain it, nor has he cantrips. So yeah
Good information, but you spoke and moved on way too fast.
holy crap why not play an actual video game at this point? this is so overwhelming smh
Does your group want to use this? Perhaps they know you won't want to keep playing.
