Ye because the piston rings over heat and over expand creating a better seal and thous higher compression but then they obliterate from the excess heat and friction lol. Steve could try putting a tea spoon of engine oil down into the suspect cylinder to see if it helps compression, if it does it means it's your rings, but if not it is the valves (could be from valve float). Either way there is enough second hand engine parts floating around on Ebay you could just hone the damaged cylinder wall depending of severity and then replace the piston rings. If it is a valve just replace it and then lap the valve.

There are plenty ST's running low 300 BHP dedicated for track use with stock bottom end and head... Something just gave and that's unlucky. Near me there is a dude with a 320BHP ST with gutted interior that he tracks atleast twice a month and the only mod he did to the internals is a pumaspeed block mod to prevent the ovaling of the cylinder bores and head gasket failure. Only real issue he had in 3 years of the car being stage3 is a broken 4th gear
Definitely rings over issues with the H.Gasket, might be worth picking up one of those cheap Endoscopes & having a look down the bore, see if there is any scoring of the cylinder, prior to you taking it apart. Great video though Steve, love your no nonsense & it is what it is methods 👍🏼
Im sorry for your loss Steve. I would love to see an engine rebuild. I think youve blown the piston rings, but id need to see more on the engine. When will you be doing the engine pull? possibly?
Feel so sorry for you Steve after all the work and great content you have put into the car. Luckily a man with your knowledge and determination can repair it.
A lad I work with his st started to misfire and smoke and showed no compression on cylinder 1 and found the skirt on the piston has broken and the liner was also oval he fitted a new engine to his with a block mod
I heard recent stories of the oil pump screen in the bottom of the engine on the newer ford engines are faulty and causing them to destroy the whole engine
Sad times Steve be interesting to see what's failed, for example would it have gone so quick if you was stage 2 and would a oil cooler of saved whatever has happened or has it just been pure luck something has failed. Would love too see time for open surgery
Sorry about the engine 😞 If I had to guess I would be a headgasket/ cylinder head went and washed the lubricantion out of Cylinder 1 and then took out the piston ring which tore up the block. Would love to see a postmortem of the engine. Please check the oils as if there is metallic parts the turbo will need to be cleaned or you will be here again.
Sorry to see that. The plugs are jet black - my first thought is that it is running way too rich and that contributed to increased temps and eventual mechanical failure.

Yes! So many blown stg 3 fiesta's!! Please find a way for our setups to live! Film a series on known failures and possible remedies! (On stg3's specifically)
Shims, bigger radiator, oil cooler, liners,... not a closed deck cause they seem to have problems with heat building up cause the engines cooling wasn't designed for closed deck.
Standard ST180 stuff when you mess with them, i lost compression on cylinder 1 aswell. The cylinders ovaled (4 was worse then 1 but 1 failed) causing the piston to fail. The side of my cylinder 1 piston broke off taking the rings with it.
Oil starvation will be the cause. Due to the extra power and grip from the diff its causing the oil to go to one side of the sump in the corners. For track use make sure you have a oil pressure gauge. I bet its spun a shell and caused ring damage.
Welcome to the (sad) club of blown engines... I feel your pain... Mine's been sitting at home with a blown cylinder as well, exactly the same as your car (oil coming out of ITG filter, white smoke on track, 0 compression on cyl. 3 but the others are fine, etc...) I will be pulling the engine out as well in a few weeks hopefully. Would be interesting to see what your findings are and I'll let you know what caused mine to blow.
I would say it your piston ring on one piston, hopefully you can do some of the work your self and maybe some mods to the engine, like harden vales and better piston too, good luck on your fix
Have you got an oil pressure gauge in the car? Didn’t lose oil pressure going round a strong corner and spun the bearings on cylinder 1 and cracked a piston?
Sorry for your engine going bang Steve and you've definitely got to tear down the engine Steve to see what's gone but I think it's definitely cracked the rings 👍 hope u get it fixed soon 👍
Until the engine is completely torn down are you sure it's a write off? Whip the head off and check for damage to valves etc and have a look down the bores, is the crank and bottom end ok? Can these engines be rebored or do they have to be relined? It would be great to find the cause and factor in strengthening that area on this or a future engine. Is it cheaper to just chuck in another engine? would you know the history of it and have confidence to tune it? Good luck and keep smiling!
i think the piston rings and pistons on these engines are more prone to failure than anything else, if im not mistaken the rods are forged from factory

Bad luck steve but onwards and upwards. Personally i would put my money on ringlands or cracked cylinder liner , most common problem areas. If your going to forge or rebuild then talk to my very good friend and master engine builder ian howell at area six developments . He builds ecoboost fully forged with intergrated liners with some little mods that most dont pick up on . He now builds all pumaspeed engines , storm developments audi 5 pot engines (arthur 1038bhp)as well as zetec turbos. Down side is there around 4k for a fully built block but you wont get it built better anywhere else better. Chin up mate and if you keep making vids i will keep watching.👍
I run the 2R Cat Safe, so hope it's not, but will be interested to see if running that had done any engine damage at all? Hard to find any concrete evidence it does damage to engines and not just your cat on the interweb. Hope all gets sorted soon. Been starting to save for x47r recently, but hearing more and more stage 3's have engine trouble now, definitely having 2nd thoughts. 2R is plenty for public road.
I think you first cracked a sleeve (overheating) then the ovaled out Cylinder allowed the combustion to push on the side of the piston and therefore it blew off the lower portion of the piston (happened to mine)
@@christianwright5479 Stock Block x47r with manual boost control to 2.3 Bar, obviously it was my own fault that it blew up..... Coming from the Abarth World where they have cast iron blocks i had to learn the Hard way what "open deck aluminiun block" means
Sorry about the blown engine fella. Ford don't give torque setting for the big ends on these sigma engines but some tuners do rebuild these. Might be worth rebuilding and forging it.
Id say maybe ring landings cracked Or the cylinder bore can u get a bore scope an have a look inside the cylinder see if u got any scoring down sides Or a hole in the piston Sad to hear the bad news hopefully see u build it back stronger than ever Maybe worth stripping first see if it can be saved Could build it with forged internals if block is reusable
Gutted for you and hope you sort something out to get the track car going again. With zero compression I doubt it's a ring problem, probably an intake valve damaged allowing oil etc up where it shouldn't go.

Awww gutted for u mate. It Was running sweet!! Hope your get sorted soon 👍
I think you first cracked a sleeve (overheating) then the ovaled out Cylinder allowed the combustion to push on the side of the piston and therefore it blew off the lower portion of the piston (happened to mine)
Seems likely.
What set up were you running Checcoo97
@@christianwright5479 Stock Block x47r with manual boost control to 2.3 Bar, obviously it was my own fault that it blew up..... Coming from the Abarth World where they have cast iron blocks i had to learn the Hard way what "open deck aluminiun block" means
Sorry about the blown engine fella. Ford don't give torque setting for the big ends on these sigma engines but some tuners do rebuild these. Might be worth rebuilding and forging it.
really interested to see what happened so worth pulling it apart!
Could be rings but a strip down will confirm what's going on fully shame its happened as you have put so much effort in with the car.
Id say maybe ring landings cracked
Or the cylinder bore
can u get a bore scope an have a look inside the cylinder see if u got any scoring down sides
Or a hole in the piston
Sad to hear the bad news hopefully see u build it back stronger than ever
Maybe worth stripping first see if it can be saved
Could build it with forged internals if block is reusable
Hope it’s just an intake valve so you can get aware with a cylinder head refurb. Definitely do a strip down video.
Gutted for you and hope you sort something out to get the track car going again. With zero compression I doubt it's a ring problem, probably an intake valve damaged allowing oil etc up where it shouldn't go.
