I've been watching YT tutorials on music production for at least 4 years now. There's a LOT of garbage out there. Sean Divine's videos never disappoint, but this one got me to subscribe. Excellent video! Puts a lot into perspective.
This man right here helped me progress so much in my mixes over the years. Can’t ever thank you enough.
Appreciate you Sean!
Sending a huge thanks to you Sean. Another awesome video that I'll be carrying with me on future tracks. We appreciate you so much!
From rapping over your beats back in the days to learning how to mix from you. Always great to get content from you
Every single one of these is the hard truth, I have resolved for the longest time to know the rules but not be afraid to break some. Great video Sean, keep doing what you do, we appreciate you.
Awesome video Sean!!!! The problem I have with ‘RUclips’ video tutorials is that everyone is telling you that you need to do this or/and that and very few explain the why behind it. So, when the amateurs go to mix they try to follow verbatim and end up with crappy mixes and get frustrated. I particularly love your comment about the fact that things are quite different when mixing ‘in the box’. Thanks for sharing this video
Another incredible helpful video! Thank you so much for killing these myths!
Great relevant info for modern mixing and the beat you used to demo perceived loudness with the 808 bass is lit🔥🔥
Thanks Migi!
Thanks so much sean,I have been falling in this mixing trap all through but this toturial change that for ever,am a big fan of your channel you have tought me elot.
Love your tutorials, I'm always learning something new, thanks!
Great video!! I like how the song came in on the last tip. I will try my hardest to avoid the charge “Reckless Mixing” !! 😁
Great video, many thanks Sean - Had been having some issues with loosing transients (on drums especially) almost certainly due to over compression especially on the master buss - literally thinking about this yesterday while mixing tracks for a blues rock band... The mix in mono (or not) was really useful too. Now subscribed. :-)
In my opinion this is the best video you could possibly have done so far this year that is super dooper helpful for all of us regardless of our knowledge. I love your channel and your teachings.
thanks so much Cwilliam, glad to hear it!
Aye sean just wanted to say thanks your videos helped me alot a few years ago!
Damn Your mixes sound super clear! First time I've seen your video now I'm subscribed.
🙏
Good stuff as usual bro. Keep the grind going.
Appreciate all you do Sean
Just found you and holy crap can't wait to get back to my mix now!
Great video. Thanks Sean.
This was enjoyable to watch. Good advice overall.
Man love your beats! You sir are gifted and talent for sound design and layering. Just went over to your beats site. :) God Bless.
Appreciate that 🙏
Thanks you so much for sharing the knowledge! I always walk away with new knowledge after seeing your videos. I’m intrigued by your 808 processing. Can we see a video on that?
awesome Alex :) will see what I can do!
Super helpful! Thanks!!
I used to fall in all these traps & realized all My older tracks sounded better mixed vs when I used the methods floating around all over youtube & reddit.. I stopped reading reddit posts and unsubbed alot of misinformation channels. LOL Thank You for this video brother! Most people get carried away & lost in the technical aspect & dont focus enough on creativity.
Yeah, there's a lot of bogus advice on producing and mixing on the internet that can really set you back.
I think you should listen to top engineers in the field before any reddit or even youtuber. Dave Penssado etc. All the info you need
Amazing content as usual
Thanks Jay!
Very Useful ✨
Thanks to you the next few years your videos have helped me a lot to learn some plugins how to tabot thank you very much Mr. Sean
Glad I could help :)
I do agree mixing in mono doesn't make sense BUT checking yes because may phones ARE playing back in mono and soooo many pople listen on the phone nowadays. Regarding this topic, it's also a good idea to check mono at a really low bitrate as you sometimes can get really weird artifacts when having a 'phase problem' that you would never hear in stereo (in your studio or else). Cheers
Great video. Thank you
Useful stuff.
Great video! Got yourself another sub!
thanks and welcome!
Sean, always good stuff! especially the break people out of the box stuff like 32bit, and digital clipping. As CLA says, sometimes that's the sound! But as long as it is non destructive to the mix. :)
I did have a question, I was wondering.. what exactly do you use to send your out from your projects directly to your video. There are a couple plugins that I have seen, at one point I was using Sunflower.. but I wasn't able to get it working for Live Broadcast. I was curious as to your process/software and if you might share that? Thanks!
Unreal brother
I was actually part of the LUFS guys lol. Strictly stuck to the common streaming LUFS requirements but I still would not find my tracks as loud as mainstream songs. Thanks for the correction 🙏
There’s a good fabfilter vid that came out last week about loudness. Also worth a view.
@@CLdwyer thanks fam 🙏 gonna check it out
@@igorbeuk6298 Sounds interesting. I think however, loudness didn't begin gelling together until I began breaking down arrangement, psychoacoustics, etc. I think loudness really begins on a production level cuz it impacts what can be done in mastering and how much squeeze is enough. The fab filter vid really hits on the 2nd point.
Generally, we have gotten used to 8-10 RMS as a mastering level (6-8 for EDM) but just cuz you have that level doesn't make it "sound" impactful & loud. Could sound choked & flattened. I think theoretically, it's why more use of ambience & space has emerged in leading pop tracks. Because it permits greater use of push and pull and impactful dynamics whilst being at a loud RMS/LUFS level. 90's and 2000's was a drier period in music and that was all being smashed with L2's onto CD's with unregulated level.
@@CLdwyer outside of level, look up the Fletcher-Munson curve. Our ears are more sensitive to higher frequencies than lower ones.
@@tylerdengler6960 Agreed! They are.
When you told me my mix was in mono, I didn't know what you meant, until this vid. Thanks for seeing a need and speaking on it. Pro tips.
THANKS 🙏🏽
Love your videos!!! What video software are you using? Would love to use this for my music school.
thx for for your video make my mastering and my mix much better
nice, thanks!!!
Bro this guys sound...the drums...the bass...everything so dope..
Thank you, thank you :)
Amen brother.
siempre tengo problemas con el mito número 2, pienso como tu.gracias por compartir tu experiencia. saludos desde chile
I can see you like the Oneknob Louder. I like that. I also like the Oneknob Phatter.
Any way you could do a Multiband Master Limiting tutorial, specifically using Waves L3 Maximizer and how to preserve dynamics while mastering loud mixes?
using multiband limiting is simple. just don´t
Great subject matter.
Good to remind us again what not to do! I have a question: do you filter out the low end when you use a master bus compressor? It seems to me that if you use very light compression on the master bus, the low end might stop the rest of the frequency spectrum to be 'glued'? This being said, I usually find my mixes to sound better after mastering when I don't use master bus compression.
absolutely! if you look at the bus compressor in the video (this is one of my common settings), I use the S/C HPF set to 185hz
Your mixes are great bro! Question do you mix your drum samples? Or are they already mixed processed samples? They always sound great punchy and snappy! 👍🏾
thanks Reggie! I do mix my samples… that said, I think it’s crucial to select the right samples and some are already processed more than others. If it’s been done correctly, it just means less work will need to be done on them in the mixing process.
Thank you teacher 🙏 luv from India ♥️Bdw desperately need an indepth beat mixing video like u done before 🙏 plz very humble request and thnks for everything 💯🔥🙏
Hi Sean, these myths are exists because some RUclips’r want to make “interesting” video for being popular or being interested. Basically they are overrate every simple idea as if a new innovation or secret. Thank you for this video. I hope some people realise that not every video on RUclips for teaching but for increasing channel popularity.
Love it.. I was just with this thought about all these newbish or wanna be's youtubers showcasing their compressors with drum either buses or individual channels... They compress the whole "flavour" of the tone to a point where it sounds freking horrible and they are like "wowwwww"..... Wuuuuuuut? I like compressed drums very rarely because yes. Nowadays most of samples we use are pretty well sounding already. Cool!
Cool, 5 lesser-discussed tips that are useful
go for it seaaaaaaaaan !!!!!!!!!!!
That 1st beat🔥
🙏
Thanks
Hey Sean love the vid! Any recommendations for a versatile reverb plugin for a producer who makes mostly hip hop beats but wishes to dwell into vocal processing as well? thanks!
R verb or Valhalla vintage!
Would love to see exactly what you did to bring that 808 out so much
Cliping in analog is sweet man i got my neve summing board oute creme and mojo digital in a bit more careful
Thanks for the info, it definitely sparked some things to try in my next mix. So if you’re using processing techniques like saturation, distortion, etc. on your low end, which give it a fuller and richer low end, what are some good processing techniques to use on mid to high-mids to give that range more depth and sound more full? I’m struggling on one of my tracks and it just sounds thin in that mid to high/mid region.
Saturation and stereo imaging. Saturating the high-end introduces more harmonics to make it sound louder and giving it space to breath by widening it. Not so much where it sounds thin and washed out. Even boosting in the high-end with an EQ helps, but be careful that it doesn’t sound too harsh doing so.
Thanks for always teaching us this much it’s pretty helpful especially for beginners like myself can we get tutorial on how to eq male and female vocals like Accapella vocals to sound professional
It seems like you mix a lot of Christian hip hop and I think that’s really dope

Yo Sean, you killing the show as usual. Please remind me the name of the of the (unusual)delay effect you were advertising few months ago. I bought it through the link you shared. But now that my computer is ready i cannot remember the name of the plugin.
Thanks for the quality info you share.
hmmm was it Remnant by Creative Intent? 🤔
@@SeanDivine Lost and found. After you reminded me the name, I have asked and the company has sent me a new link to download the products I had purchased from them before.
Problem solved.
The real issue is the fact that people don't know when to or not to make use of these items properly. Everyone is so hung up in trying to put up a facade of looking professional or using stuff a pro used thinking it is plug and play. At the end of the day these are all tools we have in mixing, along with the most important tool: our ears. Mixing really is something where if you don't understand the ebb and flow of your decisions it will end up sounding like ass no matter what you do.
I agree that mixing 100% of the time in mono is bad, but I've also noticed that the best mixes by professionals always sound great in mono -- to the point where they almost sound identical when compared in stereo, just less wide.
It's a good point. It's just not going to sound AS good in mono when comparing in stereo... definitely want it to sound balanced in both though!
Yo Sean can you kindly make a video on your 808 processing?? I mean 4 channels 808 processing???!! I’m like what the hell is that??!! Lol 😂
💐
i’m in my iphone speakers in landscape and i’ve never heard anything so wide in my life 👀
The last one was big for me. I’ve always been leaving a lot of headroom before mastering. I aim for -6db for the elements I want to have priority. Do you shoot for a certain db? What’s your mindset when purely mixing and balancing levels? Thanks.
I don't generally aim for any specific numerical values, just what feels right... without being reckless, of course!
@@SeanDivine how do you know if your kick or snare from a pack is already processed in order to avoid unnecessary compression like you said?
it's usually very obvious to hear... you can also check to see if it's peaking just below 0, it's likely maximized / limited already
@@SeanDivine When you mix into a limiter, do you leave the threshold all the way up so it’s not engaged?
is VCA the same as grouped tracks in Ableton? I'm not super familiar with Logic
I remember hearing some big rapper saying he mixes in mono. That it was the secret to a hit song. I think he Meant they make sure it sounds good in mono. But I don’t think he meant mix and bounce to mono.
Yep! Referencing in mono 👍 Bouncing in mono 🤦♂️
Great video as always! How do you decide which setting to use for oversampling on the fabfilter plugins?
I haven’t experimented all that much with it… generally speaking, the difference in the FB plugins and others with oversampling is very subtle. I usually leave it on the default!
On Pro Q 3 for example, I'll have the plugin on low latency (fastest settings) when working live in the daw, then put settings to linear phase (max!) the highest for rendering. 👍💭
And on Pro-C on the bottom is simply "oversampling x4" (best for rendering/and use lowest settings live in daw). Possibly same idea for Pro-MB if it supports the same settings aswell as other similar plugins.
@@BodyOfPlayMusic Natural Phase sounds the cleanest to me on Pro Q3... it's my default for mixing.
@@eleven21_music how about for rendering, is linear phase a consideration
beat hard as fuck too
Just what I need after killing mixes and turning them into zombies
Adding reverb / delay to an entire mix
who is doing that?😧
@@zacari99 a lot of people. I like doing it. Only for certain things & super subtle.
Hey Sean thanks for the tips! Do you apply compression to electronic drums like the 808 flex in logic? Midi velocity is the same the whole time and ehat kind of processing do you appky to that type of drums?
Use parallel distortion on a aux send I like the fruity blood ovedive
The main reason I use compression on samples is to shape the envelope. I use it on live instruments/vocals to tame dynamics.
@@recordedbybrandon I’ll try that
@@NoQualmsTheArtist thank you
I want to learn, how you mix your kick.
Let's see what you got 😁👍
What’s the advantage of using VCA’s instead of aux/buss routing or just grouping tracks?
the main one is it leaves the balance of any sends you have on tracks in tact!
What app do you use please? And also what app do you recommend for growing artist and producers ?
He is using Logic!, it’s a Mac only DAW thats from apple but it’s honestly incredible, I came from Pro Tools Wich I also loved but Logic inspired me to be way more creative musically. If you don’t have the money for Logic the people who made it also have a free version called GarageBand Wich is the same just a much more stripped back version of Logic, but it Is perfectly fine for recording vocals, starting to make beats and learning to experiment with effects!
@@theboifromspace oh thanks alot
@SOUL SEEKER that's really helpful, thank you so much.
@SOUL SEEKER About the genres, It's tough to choose just one. However, I would say that I'm mostly into the r&b / trap type vibe as for now. For me, I'm less on a typical default song, I focus more on the art 'outside the box' aspect of that genre. I believe it's tough for me to choose one specific genre because I blend different features of other genres into trap/rap/r&b. If you get what I mean at this point, lol. And yhh standard equipment go a long way influencing songs... what type of affordable mic do you suggest I should buy if you have any in mind tho
I hear what your saying, but the thing is when there are a lot of tracks in a mix and the red comes up in the stereo channel, it often gives the impression that the mix is to loud. But this isn’t always true. So I end up bounding the mix down to a stereo file and then creating a new session in my daw. I check the new stereo file to see if it clips and I checks the waveform and transients. If it clips anywhere then I go back to the mix and analyse to see where the problem is coming from.
At the end of the day this is a music engineering job. You need to assess what is happening just like any other engineer.
17:47 About that tip.. what's the difference between turning it down in VCA and just turning it down on the master bus? Won't it achieve exactly the same result?
Turning down the VCA, you are still working within the DAW, i.e., you are turning down the volume before it hits the master bus. The master bus is like the finish line of a race, once you cross it, the race is over. Since no other processing or manipulation can be done after the master bus, there is no way to increase final volume output as all plugins on the master bus itself would be turned down. Therefore the fader on the master needs to stay at unity and all gain staging or volume manipulation needs to happen before it. Hope that helped!
Yes and no. Even if there are plugins on the master bus, aren't they pre-fader so turning down the fader won't affect the input to the plugin? Also, you said the race is over when the signal hits the master bus and leaves the DAW, but the master bus is still in the DAW so nothing is leaving until I bounce? So it all sounds like turning it down on the master bus should be still equivalent to doing it on a VCA, unless there is a limiter - which Sean advised to remove...
I Check My Mix In MONO Just To See Were My Kick Snare and Sub / 808 Is Sitting In Mix / Volume. For Me They Could Sound Fine When The Mix Is In Stereo But When You Make It MONO Sometimes Kick Snare and Sub / 808 Is To Loud Or Clipped Or Distorted and Not In a Good Way lol
👍👂
good -- I would suggest though that you make clear the distinction between VCAs and Busses in Logic, as they are not the same thing. Very good point about the whole 'mixing in mono' thing, that kinda drives me crazy. Check in mono sure, but don't mix in mono, stereo placement and soundstage is a huge part of what mixing is!
No one ever said to do the whole mix in mono. People have taken the monitoring in mono to get the balance right out of context.
@@illestofdemall13 Right. I thought that was kind of a straw man argument. Nobody is telling anybody to mix in mono unless you're going for some retro recreation.
I just seen this 2 months later lol but can you/anybody explain what a vca means ?

@@CaldoHits your welcome
How much headroom should i leave b4 sending a mix to be mastered?
@@SeanDivine peak or true peak?
The number doesn't matter. -0.1 to -10 as long as there is no clipping the mastering engineer can just turn it down a couple of db if needed. Always true peak to answer your second question.
occasional mono mixing is especially useful if you produce club music/music that is meant to be played in the club, because most sound systems in the club are mono.
No they're not. I've not come across any clubs where the music is actually part of the experiance where its only in Mono. The only Mono system I've come across is in a chain bar where its more for the social than the actual music.
@@samkitt think of it this way: If there is one venue where they have a mono sound system and your tracks are stereo, there probably will be some phase issues and your track won‘t sound good at all. With that in mind I‘d rather mix my track so that it‘s also mono compatible than just mixing it just in stereo because apparently ‚you’ve not come across any clubs where to music is actually part of the experience where its only in mono.‘
YES ON MIXING IN MONO, YES AND NO...... ON CLIPPING...
The only advice that I have to call you on is on the SSL mixbus compression. The knee on an SSL bus compressor is linked to the ratio. To get the famous SSL glue that you have heard on thousands of hit records it is a 4:1 ratio because of the knee this ratio has. You have to control the amount of compression with the threshold not the ratio.
Otherwise great video, there are so many ridiculous ideas perpetuated about mixing like EQ sweeping. It's nice when explained well like you did 😁👍🏾

Voltage controlled amplifier :) ruclips.net/video/tSuwq8ukdVg/видео.html
A lot of phone speakers are actually mono. That includes mine. Personally I like to mix in mono in the beginning. I put it on mono and have the master fader at a very low volume. In mono I can hear resonances and frequency clashes way better. So I like to do the first EQ moves on it. And in mono I can hear here better when I use too much reverb. Because suddenly the mix looses energy in mono if I have toouch reverb.
Might be because I mix with headphones...
You look like Fernando Alonso.
