    I used to be homeless, and the worst thing to do is gathering stuff, hoarding stuff, you're in a position where you just shouldn't have stuff where it overwhelms you. Till you find a way out of homelessness, stay light, stay mobile, don't get weighed down with stuff.

    • @Hollowpoint691
      @Hollowpoint691 Год назад +18

      Absolutely. We have a homeless encampment by the side the road in a very small community. People aren't completely heartless, but over the two years that it's been in there, more and more trash, totalled cars and car parts. It looks like a disaster. It's even started expanding onto the main roadway. Everyone I have talked to agrees if the site was cleaner and organgized they could accept it.

      I agree with you and was thinking the same thing...i was going to comment then i saw yours and here i am replying. When you are living the nomadic lifestyle regardless of wether you were forced to or it is your choice, it makes sense to travel light for your own benefit. Apart from a matress and containers/bags to store clothes and food and toiletries you really shouldnt have big items that bog you down.
      Living in a tent (with no car): you need to be able to pack up your tent and have your sleeping bag and a big backpack to store
      your items.
      Living in a car: things should not be spilling out of your car...you should only keep what you can put away in your car.
      Same with RV; dont have stuff strewn all over the outside of your RV. If you keep your living area tidy and free of stuff and litter then you shouldnt have to deal with these sweeps throwing out your belongings.
      I have no idea why nomads would need half the stuff i saw there. I pray these people get housed afcourse but i also want them to think about how they can improve this situation here.

    • @rainy.d7404
      @rainy.d7404 10 месяцев назад +5

      I dont understand why you need to hoard so much stuff when you are homeless. It's not a criticism , just saying it is more work to pack everything with the sweeps happening regularly.

    If you park & don't keep all of your possessions INSIDE of the vehicle, there is going to be a huge problem. There are plenty of people who live full time in there RVs who don't stay in one place & when they do, they try to blend in with the surroundings, they don't turn the area outside into a trash heap. May God bless them in their journey.

    I believe the cities do these sweeps because of trash that keeps piling up and eventually becomes a health issue. The homeless seem to be blaming others dropping off trash but from what I've seen is, they collect too much junk in the 1st place, one example I see often is how many bike parts do you really need? Who knows, maybe their collecting it for scrap but to make it worthwhile, you need a decent truck to haul it to the scrap yard.

      A lack of physical buildings to occupy isn't the problem. There's already more empty buildings than homeless people. They need to either simply be left alone if they're not causing damage to anything or one and or just time to get back on their feet so to speak.
      It's very true that a significant if not greater portion of homeless people are no different than any other "normal" hard working person who's just going through an overwhelming and often traumatic sequence of events in their life that they couldn't handle or keep up with. And with no support of family or friends, or perhaps stubborn pride that kept them from asking in the first place, sent them down a spiral of unstable living conditions that becomes very hard to pull up out of.
      It's a surprisingly complicated problem. Free living spaces do give some measure of help and i do reckon most people would be trying to get a job and than move out into their own home when they can. But the complexity of human psyche and structure of society make what may feel like a simple fix much less black and white than we want it to be.

      @@BelleOfAmherst thanks. I was homeless myself for a couple years when i was younger and unfortunately it's one of those things where it can be next to impossible for people who haven't walked a mile in their shoes to understand.
      A lot of the people who say the classic "just get off your butt and get a job" aren't necessarily terrible people, they just only know what they know from their own life experiences and have luckily never had to try to put their life back together from such a tattered state.
      And to be honest what I've seen and experienced with solving the problem is not so much about a particular person, as you mentioned hopefully seeing this, being able to do something about it. But rather what helped me and millions more was the kindness of average and good hearted folk interacting with down and out people in their community's. As being isolated from the community was usually a significant factor in how they ended up there in the first place.
      You seem like genuinely gold hearted person. Don't be afraid of interacting with the homeless to whatever point you feel safe and comfortable and maybe you will help someone when they need (and wanted) to get back on their feet. ❤

I come from a middle class home now I live in low income housing and I see a lot of people dying from OD . I think we have such a drug problem as well as homeless problem because people are falling through the cracks. The stigma is soul strong. To survive and come out thriving it's hard to hear how people talk about the homeless. I used a woman's shelter twice. For long periods. I wouldn't of be where I am today if it wasn't for the shelter. But also it's a double edge knife. Because shelters started black listing people. Addicts particularly. There was a lot of humanity given to them... unfortunately, this is just their job. I think we need to meet somewhere in the middle for this crisis... Playa Del Ray may not be the best place for encampments but I could tell you where swaths of land is inland, but there is this sense of "belonging" or just pure privilege that they belong there... as someone that's that 1 pay check away, I find it highly unfair that I have to work so hard for that view, follow rules, keep my home clean, stay out of trouble... but they got an RV parked beach front and deserve that...
    There's no right answer to this but give the workers some credit. They were very kind and respectful / plenty of heads up for these sweeps. It's all junk and trash they find from the trash anyways... We need to focus on the mental health part because that's the number one issue causing this. No one in their right mind wants to live like this, but there are resources out there and there needs to be a want to be helped as much as the want to help 😭 it's sad af but we can't even sit down and talk about anything in this country

    • @InvisiblePeople
      @InvisiblePeople  Год назад

      If we get people into housing, that’s humanity, and it solves the crisis. I’ve only once seen people in a homeless camps have a entitlement to a location, but it was more about this groups ideology than that they were homeless. People park of camp where they feel safe and there are resources nearby.
      While I do understand and even empathize a little with you saying you have to work hard for that few and it feels unfair to have to see homeless people, I hope you at least try to understand these people have no place to go. Bass and Park are going a PR dance around homelessness. LA has always been a shits how, and if we don’t take tangible actions now to get people the housing and support they need, homeless numbers are going to continue to get worse.
      Whenever I visit Oakland, I see the future nightmare of America. There are RVs everywhere. We have to stop that from happening in every city.

This is a result of greed pure and simple and lack of political representation for individuals. Only corporations are represented in our political offices and until that ends more people are going to become homeless and suffer.

    I have been homeless for 13 years and have lived outside for over 5 years. The first 3 years we were left alone and we literally built a small village. We policed ourselves, we kept our area neat and clean, we even kept the surrounding area free of trash. Then came the bulldozers. 6 times within 2 years. We have all been scrambling ever since and we are all worse off. Our shelters are inadequate, winds are the worst! No one wants to invest much time and resources because everything we do will be bulldozed. Instead of coming together and being supportive of one another, finding work, staying clean, eating healthier, etc. We are all back to the daily scramble to meet basic needs. No movement forward. This is never going to be fixed. Homelessness is going to keep getting to be a bigger issue until we outnumber the housed. Then what? Probably should have thought about all that much sooner.
