_______________ Can You Put TOO Much Tape on a Cymbal? -- One of the questions that I've been getting asked a lot on social media and via email is about taping the ride cymbal. What does it do? Is it ok? Will it harm the cymbal? Is it normal? How much tape do you need to use? How much is too much?
So in this video I team up again with my good buddy Stephen Clark (aka The Non-Glamorous Drummer) and we set out to see if we can discover just how much tape is TOO much. We have a lot of fun in this one.

Wonderful video and collab that MUST have taken forever to shoot and edit!!!!! Thank you both!! I REALLY wish you would’ve had a practice pad on the snare so we could better distinguish the changes in the resonance of the ride, tough!!
Hi Stephen(s), I like this video because it brings up a couple of points of importance and is thought provoking.
First in the studio anything goes to get the sound you need....as long as it is moral!( Love that bit!😂) I agree 100%.
Part of the "art" of music making is in the creation of the tool required to overcome and succeed.
Another thing I'd like to point out about this is, in my opinion, the 3rd version of the cymbal was the last version appropriate for that backbeat. To my ears the wide open was best, but again, MY EARS & MY OPINION.
I could see where chokeing that cymbal more with tape might be necessary in a lower volume, "torch song" or soft ballad or possibly even live stuation where controlling the ride with stick technique might be a challenge and a darker ride is not available. It might have been a more instructive video if that had been demonstrated or at least addressed verbally.
Less experienced drummers may have walked away from this video with the idea that at some point that cymbal sounded like utter crap. And they no doubt might have been right based on the back beat you were playing.
Their inexperience may have kept them from considering or being aware that the extremely deadend sound might actually have a place in a studio or live situation.
The last thing I would like to point out is also for the less experienced drummers who have never played along to a click!
I'm sure you would agree that the editing for this video would have been an absolute nightmare rather than the seamless, dead on result you got if not for the click! Essential piece of equipment for any and every drummer, no matter how big your ego is ( aka internal metronome! Yeah, I said it!😜😅).
Hope niether of you or your followers take my thoughts as negative. This was just my take away of an excellent demonstration!
I should clarify my use of the term "less experienced drummer" doesn't mean strictly newbie drummers. As well, it includes those who have been playing for years but have not yet run into this situation in their journey.

I've taped a couple cymbals when I had to play in a bar where the floors, and the walls were all wood, and concrete. I also think that muffled tom heads work well for 70s style country. Personally, I think that 4-6 pieces of tape sounds best for muffling a ride cymbal. 6-10 might have some limited use for an 808 kit. But anything after 11 pieces just sounds horrible!
I ordered some gaffers for this very same cymbal. It’s my favorite ride but oh boy it’s a super lively cymbal that could use a little taming. Can’t wait for it to patina out.

I am not sure but for me, no tape on heads or cymbals. I have always scoffed at it. Maybe it is for drummers that play too loud, I don't know.
I bought a sticky hand to use for moongel, but I have never used it.
This comes in to play when you are in a studio setting. You simply can't always tune out the troublesome overtones that the mics are picking up. I'm with you, I love an open drum...but...there are times when we need to quickly kill a bad tone or deaden up a drum or cymbal. Whatever you have to do in the studio to get the sound the client wants...that's what has to happen.
I scoffed at the idea of tape, too. Then I had a Masterclass with the great Dave Mattacks (Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention and now Los Angeles session man). He's a really nice guy! I took my ride cymbal. He said it was a nice cymbal, but could use a little tape. "TAPE???!!!" I gasped. He said 'We all use tape. Every professional drummer I know uses tape - its normal, just don't use too much...' I can't remember his exact words, but that was basically it.
For some it's about controlling sound, for others it's a way to get a darker sound without changing heads, cymbals, etc.
So i can either put 14 strips of tape on the bottom of my ride, or alternatively use a spare piece of sheet metal I have laying around, good to know!
Fun video though, i'd love to see more stuff like messing around with drum sounds and doing bizzare things to kits. I could totally see some of these "insane" things getting people a specific sound they're looking for.

At first I was so confused, seeing Stephen Clark in the Thumbnail but the channel was Stephen Taylor
When it got to around 8 it started to sound like my artisan elite 22” . Dry and dead ... tape and T-shirt that was hilarious
I only really see tape as useful when mics are involved, otherwise the ringing overtones get drowned out by buzzing amps or blend into the horn sections. Also I don’t really want to cover my cymbals in tape at home because I’m just gonna forget to take it off till three years later, at which point the residue will be permanently part of the cymbal.
If you’re having to use that much tape to get the sound you want, maybe you need a different cymbal.

I've never needed to tape any of my cymbals or cowbells for that matter, I'd hate to try to get rid of all the left over residue from the tape.
I'm not knocking anyone who does, it's just not for me.
I have a Paiste Signature Series Medium Heavy 22 Inch Symphonic Ride which has great pinpoint clarity & a huge bell sound. If I need a more washy less loud ride, I have 16" & 18" medium crashes that double as quieter rides. I have put some bath plug chain hanging via a drilled hole from the wingnut, which hangs down around 3/4's the length of the cymbal as to not choke the sound too much. I get a real nice sizzle sound with plenty of sustain, it's cheaper than buying a riveted cymbal & only costs less than 5 bucks to make. Only drawback is unintentional striking of the chain, but this doesn't happen too often.
So is this a hack for muting a cymbal?!? I really need a low volume cymbal but I don't want to drill holes in it

New Ride Cymbal King Crimson 'Discipline' album cover at 3m+ mark. LOL "No matter how I break it down, I think I like it!" I have a couple of heavy Paiste rides that need tape in a recording setting and at some smaller venues. Usually just a 1x4" strip or 2.
Yea, one is usually all it needs. More than 2 really starts to affect the cymbal in a big way.

i use clear PP (polyprop) tape on bottom of cymbals.. has the same effect as duct.. but you don't see it ... also, taping just the cup of crashes can lower and control them ..

Great video! I have this same exact cymbal and I love it, but often it needs just a tad bit of dampening.
I have a question for you. When filming this, how many pieces of tape was your favorite for the groove you were playing?
None. But again, there isn't a musical context. Add other instruments, a song, etc...well, then my opinion changes based upon the sound needed.

Great demo guys! I've got at least some amount of gaffer tape on nearly all of my rides to dial-in the wash.
HOWEVER, I really would have liked you to play 4 bars with JUST the Cymbal ride pattern (no kick or snare) with a few crashes thrown in, and then at least 2 bars with a nice bell pattern.
And while that's a fun, seriously CRACKIN' snare drum, a few bars with a MUCH lighter touch on it would've revealed more of the delicacies of what was happening with the cymbal as you progressively added the tape.
Don't get me wrong, I know these types of videos take a ton of time & work to put together, and you gotta have some limits, so I definitely appreciate the time & energy taken to produce it...you definitely earned a 👍.

I could watch the Stephen and Stephen show every day. The Stephen+rdavidr show? Not so much...
I tape underneath with some folded gauze. It's focused just enough to pull the excessive ring out but allow the cymbal to still perform naturally. I start midway from the Bell.

+Stephen Taylor - I do have to admit, the additional extra tape on that Ride had an interesting effect ... kinda like a Giant Closed Hi-Hat.
Max tape sounds better than, say, the Z practice cymbals with all the holes in them.
Moongel works well too.
I think it stopped sounding like a ride at 3 strips of tape but with all that tape on it I think it would make a cool effect cymbal

Instead of taping my cymbals I use Cympads, they come in different sizes and don't leave any residue. Way better option in my opinion!

between 2 and 4 is perfect for jazz in my opinion. just enough wash to get out of the way quickly.
Absolutely...when I was playing a lot of jazz I kept one long strip under my 20" ride to dry it out and give it more definition.

After 12 pieces of tape, your cymbal sounded like a 22” Sabian Jack DeJohnette model I used to have
Man! The first church I played in had that cymbal. I called it the ride of death. Hated it. Then, I got in to jazz. I spent months looking all over the church for that cymbal...I wanted that dry attack sound. Come to find out, they had given it to a church in Costa Rica.
Stephen Taylor I honestly don’t know what happened to mine. “There it was, gone.” I suspect that my memory of the cymbal is somewhat romanticized, and I don’t think I could apply it to the music I’m making now. For example, these days my go-to ride is a 22” Sabian Manhattan Jazz, which is the exact polar opposite of the DeJohnette cymbal.
- If you think your ride is too lively.
- I you need to tape it up
- If what you actually wanted was a crash.
You might just have bought the wrong cymbal to begin with...

wow....i hate it....i tried some gels and i liked them....on my crashes and even on the hats, but right about #15 and up you are just KILLING the cymbal....and T shirt makes that gorgeous ride crash sound like a cheap piece of junk....im looking into this cos im bout to start recording, and mine are a little loud.....smaller sticks and gels from the dollar store are gonna have to do.
now if i can just learn top PLAY BETTER.....lol.....but you guys are entertaining and fun together.....two drummers....how could that NOT be fun?.
