Nikon just released the 35 f 1.4 lens for 600 USD. It is very compact, has an (electronic) aperture ring etc. But one thing I find strange, is that yes the f 1.2 primes are gigantic, but their 1.8 primes are very compact and most of their lenses have been created to have very low breathing for video. A lot of Sony lens have very bad focus breathing.
I think you have jumped out front in terms of knowing what is really shaking up the market and you’re not afraid to take that leap. With Nikon buying Red it’s going to be an interesting future… ❤
Maybe now Sony won't release slow readout sensors on the lower end the way they did with the A7IV.
It is a third party system, they won't advertise this. They just a released a 35 f 1.4 for $ 600. Their is a rumor for a 50mm F 1.4 version coming. They also have a full set of lens, so people have choices now and the chinese brands are also on Nikon Z.
Thinking of selling my Slow Sony A74, very slow On/Off, very slow writing on Tough cards. Disappointing for hybrid photo & video.

I have heard lots of people talk about the Z mount and how adaptable it is. I have been shooting Nikon since 2010 though.
So true, buying red is the real ticket here! A clear future eco system once the technology mixes each way. R3D into the Nikons and ibis and autofocus into the Reds. Though, I do think professional Sony shooters have what they need and are good with that and so most of the new uptake will be from new users or users who aren't too deep into the Sony ecosystem. I'd be shocked to see a fx9 user swap over to Nikon at this point.
I have a Nikon D7200 and a Z5 and I love them! The next will be for sure the Z6III, here in Argentina is so expensive but some day I'll get it.

So thank you for this video. I shot Nikon DSLRs for photo for over a decade and felt frustrated with the lack of mirrorless or video options. Then when the Z series debuted, the af-d lenses were no longer able to AF, and they had some epic lenses. I felt abandoned and went to Canon and then to Panasonic. It’s like soul searching.
Nice video, Brandon. I have one question about your gimbal. Which unit do you use in this video, and would you recommend it? I prefer to keep my rig down to the bare minimum to keep as compact as possible as I mainly shoot stills, but more and more, I asked for some B roll footage. Thanks

As far as lenses go, I think Nikon's gift to users with the Z-mount was the flange distance and width of the mount. As a 20-year Nikon user, F-mount sucked so badly in that regard. You couldn't adapt anything to it, and adapting F glass elsewhere was also a terrible experience as everything was full manual. Now with Z (almost) everything adapts to it with electronics as well. I'm perfectly happy adapting cine glass and more video focused lenses
(it's also completely plausible I'm just so traumatised by 20 years of F-mount I'll put up with just about anything)
Love if you could list the accesories on the z6 iii , the 2nd handle the movie part on front on the lense.
I pick mine up today to start testing in the real world but the Z6III appears to be the Z camera I’ve been waiting for. I’ve had a Z9 and Z glass for stills purposes and then finally they fixed the mode switch and memory banks so it’s become a more steady part of my video work flow, but now Nikon has given us a gimbal-friendly size with basically no compromise. Can’t wait to get started.
What do you mean fixed the memory banks?
@@martzallmedia The banks used to be shared with both the stills mode and the video mode. So when you made adjustments in stills (switched to Aperture priority for instance) then that setting would carry back into your video exposure settings. It was a big pain.

@@martzallmedia The Z9 is up to v.5.0 Lots of improvements along the way including much more sticky subject tracking in autofocus.

I own a Z8, but on the video side, I'm not sure I'd really call the Z63 entry level. In a lot of ways, it offers better performance than the Z8, like its readout speed. Suppose to get a Z63 tomorrow. Interested to compare them.
z8 has better speeds, relax.

@@joshkiddfilms1295 nono, for video too :) i just wanted to say, that z8 is better in every way. z8 is just kinda "slower" if you use full sensor and 8k. But it's not realy slower, because z6 is under 10ms just in fastest , all over are up 10ms. Where z8 in fastest is 5-6ms. Or you can turn off oversampling and all 4k is faster than z6 :)

@@Tmk969 oh no worries at all. I own a Z8, and get a Z63 tomorrow. I think they both are going to be great. I shoot a lot of N-raw, so doing mainly 24p at max res, or the downsampled 4k...which I thought was a little quicker readout on the z63, but I could be mistaken. I am also curious if the larger pixel microns of the z63, will yield better low light performance too. Crazy to me all that Nikon is offering for the price

Megadap ETZ21 Pro but there are two others available as well and allow autofocus.

This explains why canon dropped the price of the r6ii a few months back. Its basically an updated r6ii. This is going to be like the old days with canon and Nikon going back and forth. I hope they push Sony out lol. Not likely.

I think it will come with the Expeed 8 platform which will have the ASIC logic.
Disagree with you on the number of camera releases. They NEED to give more variety to the customers. And NOT just randomly, but differentiate their products more, i.e. more video focused vs camera focused cameras - and they have RED's technology to do that. With video focused, they can leverage RED's RAW codec with low-light beast sensor and internal ND filters (kinda like FX3,FX6). For photo-centric they could also borrow from RED's global sensor tech and make ultra fast and accurate cameras for professional photography (like the A9iii).
All in all, them purchasing RED SHOULD be the best chance to harness each other's unique technology to become competitive amongst its competitors... IMO
Nikon made it very simple. Panasonic GH7 - 2350 USD in Europe, Nikon Z6 III - 3300 USD in Europe. Used Nikon Z8 is 300-400 USD more, most expensive second hand Canon R5 is 200 USD cheaper.... Nikon Z6 III is NOT a good value, they are too greedy.
The Z8 is available used for around $2800, but for the video, I'll choose Z6III. The Z8 doesn't support 6K RAW video, only 4K or 8K, with no in-between option. 6K is the ideal resolution as it's more manageable.
We can't compare a GH7 M43 sensor to the Z6III. The Z6III is full frame, it has better low light, rolling shutter and 6K 60fps raw.
The only advantages of the GH7 are Open Gate and IBIS, and even then, 4K or C4K are the only mode with really excellent IBIS, but they have bad details rendering, if you want the best quality you need to record at least in 5,7K H265 which has worse IBIS. You can't even shoot 4K downsampled from 5,7K Proresraw. So if you need the best IBIS on the GH7 in raw, you must shoot in Pixel to Pixel (1,4xcrop), and getting worse details and low light performance.
@@slows728 GH7 is just an example of supposedly similiarly priced camera, to be released in roughly the same time, inciddentally it is the camera, I am going for from GH5. The price difference is supposed to be roughly 300 USD, but it is nearly 1k USD in Europe. So my point is that the Z6 III has bad value in Europe without going for deep sale, and is good value ONLY in US or Japan.

A7 III is a very old camera by today standards. Not even compareable to the feature set of the Nikon Z6 III which is miles ahead with video features (and without overheating).

Only some people could buy them, because they were generally more expensive than Canon or Sony. Sony was the brand they made fun of... Then they took the lead with the Sony a7iii and now there are many throughout the country. With this new Nikon many friends who are still with their d750 and d850 are going to take the leap. Because for them the expenses are only justified by the business. We are not a country with good payments.

Panasonic S5ii/X has better autofocus and better value for videographers. Overall Nikon is light years behind I’d invest in Sony Canon and now Panasonic best autofocus in 2024
having tried the autofocus of the s5IIX, which is very good but not sure that it is better than the z6III, there are terrible situations with the s5IIX where you have to press the screen yourself so that it regains focus and sometimes it totally loses its subject, when there are people on the screen. but I will test this z6III and I will come back to say whether or not it is better or worse. The Sony a7 IV was quite incredible in terms of Autofocus

Not true for Nikon cameras equipped with Expeed 7 processor like the Z8, Z9, Zf and the Z6 III. Just watch the Jared Polin video. He does sports and action.
