He's too technical and looks at the industry side of things, while Gary will analyze tech with the consumer in mind. Case in point-he actually reviews the base model of every tech since that will most likely be what the average consumer will be buying. He's one of the goats of tech reviewing. Such a gem.

I know this is only my personal anecdote, but the thing that made me get an iPad over a laptop is that you can download shows on streaming apps. Only the mobile versions let you do that for whatever reason. I needed lots of onboard storage and the ability to download videos and shows because I live in a rural area. Yes, that’s a mostly entertainment use case, but that was the deciding factor for me in my personal life! People who use these for work or creativity will have different needs.

The pencil makes some differences. For illustrators, the Apple Pencil is a tool that don’t have equals. The new iPad with that ram, can be a beast for illustrators, retouchers, etc. The display is an advantage too. I hate to pay that money, but for pro work, portability and apps, the iPad it’s my choice. I have first gen iPad Pro, and I use it 99 % of my time. I have both the iPad Air and MacBook Air M1. I use the MBA for work and my iPad Air is my personal computer. My uses on the iPad are portable gaming, photo edits, answering emails, responding to job posts, and media consumption. The MBA is better for work because of connecting to external monitors, web conferencing, and file management. My workflow consists of being able to do everything through the Safari web browser, and in my opinion, Safari is still better on macOS than iPadOS.
I will however be turning in my Air for the 11inch iPad Pro as it is more portable and I am curious about the direction Apple will be taking the m1 on the iPad, so like everyone, I will be looking forward to WWDC.

Great video. I ended up getting both the 8GB M1 MacBook and iPad Pro w/magic keyboard in 2021. Both of them are still working great, though I ended up favoring my iPad Pro for most tasks. The versatility of my MacBook diminished a bit as I began to hit the 8GB bottleneck in some applications on MacOS, while the iPad actually improved when Apple FINALLY added external monitor support and other features that allowed me to use it for more of my workflow.

Awesome video as always! The main reason i went w the iPad this year is obviously what my needs r. Being a photographer that display is insane but also due to finally having the M1 chip as the MBP does I’m hopeful that even though its still running IOS it will finally have the full legit applications such as LR, PS, as well video programs for editors! I believe this will come at some point this year since it can now handle applications like these being powerful enough! I’m also a contractor so i used my 2020 11” with the pencil & folio keyboard case lot to sign contracts. But it was a MUST for me this year to upgrade to the 12.9” along with the magic keyboard!!! And there’s nothing like having the combination of the keyboard along with a touchscreen!!!!!

Love your content. I ended up with both. I got the iPad on a whim because there was one available at my local store. Using it to write this actually. With the 1st gen magic keyboard which fits the new 12.9 just fine, it’s just a little heavier when it closes. Anyway, the MBA M1 basically replaced my desktop computer setup connected to a 32” 4K monitor last winter. I was able to trade in my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 so I basically got this new big boy for half the price with 256. The new iPad is a couch computer. I use it for airplay, RUclips, emails, social media… The most basic shit, because I’m retired, but I wanted to see this screen so bad and it does not disappoint. Not a thought of regret. I’ve been using this thing in the same way since the magic keyboard launched last year. External support for iPad with M1 is a joke. WWDC better fix it by giving us hope. We deserve full screen 4K airplay mirroring. There’s so much power, especially with the new 2021 Apple TV. Sorry for all the words.

I love creating 3D models on iPad Pro (2021 & 2018) and the main reasons are touch screen and pencil. To be honest, the upgrade from 2018 to 2021 does bring a better screen, but the CPU shines to be bored, even with Shapr3D modeling, which works perfekt on 2018 too. I have an M1 base MacBook Air and a 2018 iPad Pro. I have to say, I'm not very impressed with how my photos come out when I use the MacBook for photo editing. I think I'm going to stick with the iPad in the future because photo editing is so important to me. Plus, one must consider how the iPad is a more secure device according to what I've read. The iPad's screen ratio is also more native to photo editing.

Bought the base M1 MacBook Air and upgrade RAM to 16GB… then pulled the trigger on the 12.9 M1 iPad Pro. I have had the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 2 with my 2018 iPad Pro so it’s nice those accessories work with my 2021 12.9. I will say, though many people compare the M1 MacBook Air to the M1 iPad Pro, they serve very different roles for me. The iPad Pro is my every day multi purpose device for school-Notability, email, web, videos, some occasional Office apps, RUclips. I use my M1 MacBook Air for exams, majority for PowerPoint, Word, Excel, which are far better on macOS than iPadOS, and Anki. I have to have a macOS device for school so it’s nice to have the pair. When I am done, I’ll probably only use whatever iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard/Apple Pencil combo is out. It’s just too versatile with the multiple ways to interact with iPadOS.

The Cray-2 was a supercomputer released in 1985. It was the most powerful computer in human history at the time, but it was the size of a large office cabinet and it needed to be submerged in a tank of circulating coolant in order to run without exploding. Excellent comparison Gary!
I have the 2020 12.9" iPad Pro and got myself an M1 MacBook Air. I love and use both of them.
However - and this is important - iPadOS and the iPadPro is a farcry from a real computer, Mac or otherwise.
Repeat after me: An iPad is not a computer - it´s a tablet that can be similarly used, if your use is fairly simple.
That being said, I love my iPad Pro and I occasionally use it instead of my MacBook - for video editing, design, even media consumption.
But, good luck managing your files, personalizing and managing multiple libraries, users, plugging in other devices...
If and when iPads are able to have multiple boot options (with and w/o MacOS) then we´re talking!
However, I have lower than low expectations on that front. I guess WWDC will maybe shed some light on this next week.

      @@thewatchmanstudios6257 more power to you!
When I hear and think computer, there are quite a few things the ipad and ipad os don´t fit.
I agree that you can do marvelous work on the ipad, especially if you´re a creative. I use mine for video editing, photo editing and design - this is not "simple work" - but, the workflow has to be fairly simple - create/ import file, work on file, export file - here is where the ipad experience falls apart, in my experience. I used 4-5 different design apps (from simple drawing to complex pixel and raster design) - and you know what, when you export the file, you are limited by the apps settings and by the files app/ ipad os capabilities. Never struggled with files, cloud drives, or even airdrop?
I love how easy to work with the ipad is in general, how mobile you can be with it. But unless WWDC brings some serious macos-like features to it, I refuse to call it a computer. You can do (almost) all the things on ipad with the iphone, even with an ipod touch, some things even on the apple watch - you don´t call them computers, do you?
Granted, iPadOS has made big steps toward being a fully fledged general computer OS - but it´s not there yet.

i know iOS and what it can do and can´t, giving the user a traditional computer experience is not one of them. ask any ipad user who just uses an ipad instead of a laptop "is this a good alternative for your laptop?" - i doubt very much that 1 or 2 out of 10 would say "yes it is, just me and my trusty ipad" - if they stopped and thought 5 seconds anyhow.
