Old school Cavalier with a HUGE TURBO!

- A Turbo Cavalier isn’t something we come across often, especially one of the older body styles! While the Mickey Thompson’s up front are kind of a give away, it still has an unsuspecting sleeper appearance that we LOVE! We ran into this car and its driver at the I-29 Heads Up No Prep Series in Pacific Junction, IA at I-29 Dragway. Fighting for traction in the Front Wheel Drive class, this boosted V6 Chevrolet held its own as it battled others trying to ride the very fine threshold between power and traction! While the driver is typically a bracket racer, we hope to see him back at more no prep's in the future!

best looking cavalier body style imo
MostlyIrishCarGuy agreed
@Ultra CNC Beretta's weighed a couple hundred pounds more than a Z24 and the suspension is easily upgraded, among other things. I like both but it comes down to personal preference.
@Ultra CNC I've had several, both are fairly rare here and have long since plateaued as far as depreciation is concerned. Quality parts are dirt cheap and they'll last a long time when maintained which has always been my main interest in them. Rust is their main issue, I pulled my 93 from daily duty once the rear rockers started to rust until I get new steel for bodywork.
My parents had a corsica. I learned how to drive in that car.
87 Z24 - the square body I feel has better proportions/ for whatever reason they look cleaner to me as a total package. Especially when you come across one in good condition today- maybe their rarity makes them cool to me. I have to agree about Beretta's- what an underrated, often overlooked Chevy from the 80's/90's. They have aged well for sure; at the time they were the perfect compromise between a Cavalier and a Lumina. Wish the Beretta got the 3.4 DOHC back then. Hell I wish the LS4 was available back then... Could you imagine..
Even the guy was like "yeah ok man, I know you've never seen one before get over it"
I never seen anything like this before
yeah man can honestly say
Grimfate20 😂
thats his mom dumb ass!!!
Would be nice if the interviewer had some more original questions. Ask what tire size, what was the hardest thing to make this pos fast hahah
l wonder if he has ever seen a 90's Cavalier at the drag strip before?
ጬ I had a 97. The only strip that ever saw was the scale at the junk yard.
The world may never know.
ጬ 😥
@Ultra CNCright on ls swap turbo em all
I have to say man I had never seen a old cavy in a dragg before man
Gotta love how humble this man is! He's just happy to be there!
this not showing the engine bay thing is starting to get annoying.
whats to see, it's a turbocharged 3.5 liter V6
Yeah kyle wtf.
Adam olson some owners just request there engines not to be shown
Not everyone requests not to show the engine. None of their recent videos have shown engines. It seems like they are more concerned with the stickers on the car than what's under the hood.
.17 seconds you can see the motor .. Turbo on the drivers side
Glad to see some of our V6Z24 guys still at it!
Mad respect for having the balls to pour money into a cavalier
Why are they not showing video of the engine????????????????????
Jesse Vaughn i knowwww
Jesse Vaughn didnt show it on the omni either....
Maybe they've never seen one before.
or time
Video guy Is a dumb fuck!
See, you don't need 1500HP to have fun!
Most of the commenters here would shit their pants with 250WHP
Action Jackson why talk shit? Are you unhappy that you have a fat ugly wife or something? Did you get picked on when you were a child?
+Slavonic Seriously. I'm tired of people saying that most viewers would shit themselves at *insert low power value here*. I've heard it before guys, hate to break it to you but 500hp isn't much in the performance world, so no i wouldn't shit my pants if my car had 500hp. I've driven 500hp cars, they're fast. They're not something you should make videos about though. We simply don't like seeing 500hp F bodies 1000hp in one is alright. They aren't fast. 500hp mk1 golf or Sunbeam tiger or something, that's what we want to see.
Just for youtube smh.
+315Stain It's true that you don't need 1500hp to have fun. My car has about 300 and its fun as hell. But nobody wants so see videos of my car running 13.5's on the internet.
Love seeing the old gm fwd. the old 60° mpi motors were awesome. I had a high 12sec Beretta.
I'd rather modify a Cavalier or a Sunfire than a Honda Civic, since too many people already do all sorts of shit with Civics.
To those saying there's "no aftermarket" for these engines...you have no clue.
This is literally the LS1 of pushrod GM 60 degree V6's. I have no doubt he could bump to 30psi as there were a lot of forged internals in the 3.5l
100% lots of stuff, rods, pistons, cams, roller valvetrain. Later engines had roller camshafts. Heads accept off the shelf stainless steel valves with some minor reworking not expensive at all. There even off the shelf headers available for it. Most people just don't realize the potential, fits in lots of chassis too. I think a 3.5L Turbo Camaro was at Drag Week this year.
And the nice thing is that the 3500 bolts in place of the earlier 3100/3400 with very little modification except for the external crank trigger setup and some differing sensor locations. The 3100/3400 ECU's will even accept and run the 3500, although it's best to reflash.
The aftermarket has always been pretty strong for these engines if you knew where to look and the 3500 just continues the tradition. I'd be a little curious to see how much the block itself can take though.
Yella Terra 👍 Company in Australia, they make Whipple supercharger kits for the L67 3800.
That thing will catch so many guys off guard on the street
If you're going to have people shoot videos for 1320 at least tell them to shut up and show the car and the engine. This guys interviews make me cringe it's so painful.
Don't be a little bitch nobody cares if you cringe
Apparently,so far 16 people DO care that he cringes. XD

Oookayyy creepy fuck
I had a 94 V6 Cavi. I loved it. Pretty decent torque
I wish I kept my '92 Cav. I loved that car. Very dependable!
I love grass roots shit. That was cool.
People always told me these z24s were pretty good on streets back in the 90s, well done!
Sweet, brought back some memories of my 88 z24. It was stock, but so much fun to drive.
Man that Cavy was gettin it!Sweet build!
My first car was a 86 cavalier z24 with a 2.8 4 speed. Still have it
Roy Sancho it's the square one. rare and very valuable. keep it
Thats the first year they had the z24. Keep that thing.
How much do you want for it my aunt had one and I liked that car.
As a Sunbird owner keep it
I still have a early 90's 2 Doors Cavalier RS with the 3.1L OHV V6, basically a barebone Z24, no body kit, same power train.
This has to be his fun car and doesn't want to hurt it. He said he bracket races it. Keeping the tune a little weak, and still going through the 3 speed auto.
That civic was probably 500+ pounds lighter
Dude looks super humble. Him and his GF all smiles. Makes me feel fuzzy inside. Enough of the sentimental shit. Where's my fucking beer!
I actually really like this car a lot. Will always have a soft spot for older body style cavys.
Props to 1320 for featuring so many angles and drivers all in one event.
Who cares if you’re fucking first just enjoy the damn video
Takumi Fujiwara ikr
You care, obviously.
I guess your not compentative.
If you're not last probably was ford
Takumi Fujiwara, chill man chill and also why are u here? Aren't u supposed to race today?
had a 1990 z24 3.1 v6 bone stock went 16.12 85mph neat little car
A 2.5in exhaust will get you out of the 16's on that car. :)
This is kind of cant believe it moment. My first car that i owned was a 92 z24 i bought it with 57k miles on it and drove it til 226k. My second car that i bought was a 5th gen 2001 Prelude that i drove to 205k and sold it last year. This brings memories. Thanks for making this clip.
My first car was a '92 z24, and it was a fun car to drive
I had a 86 z24 caviler with the v6 even without turbo it still hauled ass. It was heavy in the front so had to change the front rubber engine mounts. They would usually break the rubber apart from the mount
Lol could have gone with straight metal mounts
@@mikepro-ww5fg yes could have
I would love to see more of the Cavalier
Cool, we saw the Omni yesterday, and now (almost) the rest of the story with the Cavalier! Great job 1320!
I had flashbacks when I saw the 3.1 badge of changing the water pump and intake manifold gasket
I had one of those back in the day! Back then that car was so nice looking.
I got a '84 Cavalier and it looks way more retro than that. Im only pulling 80 hp on a good day though lol
0:45 lol that face says it all
Some people love to do crazy $#!+ to unsuspecting cars because it's fun. If there's very little aftermarket support, it's a challenge to figure out what works. I have more respect for people who do this, than those who just buy a ton of off-the-shelf parts that everyone else has to fit in. Those of us who have these cars get creative because we are. Copy and paste is the easy way out. --> 91 Z-24 3.1 MT5 FWD -stock. If I didn't improve that, I didn't do it right.
I have a lot of good memories of that car. My buddy had one. Same color&trim.
Great guys at 1320. So kind you could pass for Canadian.
Gonna put a turbocharged 3800SFI in a cavalier pretty soon here. Glad to see that these cars aren't completely dead.
i notice the front head lights on the cavi kinda resemble head lights on the foxbody stang except the cavs are trimmed more narrow or thinner
Pretty sick car. Usually when you see one of these the driver smokes with the windows up and doesn’t use turn signals
Hey! That's my uncle! 🤣
Two oddball cars battling it out. Omni vs Cavelier
BAD ASS CAR I am also very happy you said up a Cavalier I had a Sunbird of that year I miss that car.... A+ build next a alcohol /water injection system & more boost.
"Did up a Cavalier" God I hate spell check.
I still have my early 90's Cavalier RS 2 Doors, 3.1L V6 OHV-MPFI, it's currently got approx 173,000 KMS. and kept it stock.
Needs a paint job and some rust repairs, hope to do that when the virus quarantine is finished.
Very cool 👍
I had one of these in high school. Red, 5 speed, z28. it was fun.
I like his shirt...
Those cavaliers with the v6 were sketchy under full accel. Torque steer due to unequal c/v shaft length.
I always called them contra cars, because driving them was like up down up down left right left right b a b a select select start, and by then it was pretty much a straight line, doing well over 90 on the on ramp.
Im glad to see one of these survive and tearing it up
I've always wanted to convert the Z34 to rear wheel drive when I was growing up.
It can be done, you will need to do tons of work on it, starting with relocating the engine, transmission, and other parts needed to make it work.
It's going to be easier if you can find the Pontiac Fiero, and you probably will have to modify parts here and there, and install it into the Z34.
lmao dude saying it was close at the end that eg greyhound bus length gapped that ass
Shaun Thompson ej there is no such thing as an eg coupé
I had one same color and everything minus the turbo!! 😁
That caliber was like not even going to waste the fuel
Ah I was expecting the Vauxhall lol.. thought it looked different in the thumbnail 😂 knew my memory wasn’t that bad from when I had one years ago
That cavalier EATS.
Wow that first run I thought for a second I was watching the first fast and furious lol
"I make EVERYONE uncomfortable with my lack of people skills"- 1320 guy
My brother had a white one that looked just like that one, back in high school. It had the 2.8 in it and we thought it was fast back then lol.
Dude interviewed him several times and never got an engine bay view. Even when he was standing right next to the damn thing with the hood wide open.
There's just something I dig about FWD V6.
I miss my '94 steel blue Cavalier coop. Wasn't very fast, but I sure drove it like it was.
that's the only good looking cavalier imo
well god damn!! thats what my engines capable of?!
I spent the entirety of my teenage years inside that generation of Chevy Cavalier while growing up near Lordstown, Ohio.
Good job, nice Cavalier!👍🏽👍🏽
Hey Fred, have you ever seen a cavalier on the drag strip? Please, tell me honestly.
dear god no that would mean we have to hear him and that other dweebs voices again..
This was my first car. Wild!
I love the car I had one who didn't never had no civic that's for sure!
i had one 92 z24, damn thing ran like stank down the 401 ;)
i Like that prelude.
You cannot tell me that this guy didnt go home, think about that day, and think "wow, that guy that was recording me was annoying"
Props for originality
I'm pretty sure I watch this guy at Julesberg all the time.
I had an 88 z24 , miss it so much
It's back!!!! The sleeper
I have ALWAYS wanted a 91 cavalier
I love Gm v6 engines 2.8 to 3.8 even the fwd 3x00 to 3500 engines.can make fun power. The 2.8 and 3.4 are interchangeable , you can put the fwd aluminum heads on those engines. I want to build one just to piss off someone but tuning is a big concern. I read a lot guys just use mega squirt but it’s always more too it . Nice vid by the way
That's exactly why I'm looking into them now, to piss people off 😂
I've always wanted one of these Cavaliers
Nice blonde
anewdimnsion yes they need to do a feature on her
anewdimnsion so his car is blown, and so is he !😄
She is cute as hell! Lucky guy there!
Capt Trdl hell no ! 😄
All right i can't wait for this race
Fuck, I guess I'm getting old when a 90's Cavalier is "old school"
what the interviewer does not know (and none of yall) is, that before he passed a gentleman named Steve Taylor won multiple thousands of dollars bracket racing a stock cavalier.. even beat box cars.
the interviewer is cringe worthy time for a new one 1320
I'm glad kyles social skills are a little better.
My favorite cavaliers of all of them
HAHA.. who would of thought I really like it there skin!! good build
I drove z24 cavalier same color in high school but I wish mine had been turbo lol. Still was a peppy car tho. Did many neutral drops white smoking the front tires lol
My home boy had a z24 they come from the factory running good
They don't run that good. Problem was gearing and the fact that GM didn't put a strong V6 into those things. The car with a V6 was heavier too.
Anthony Thomas wrong I had a 92 Z24 turbo and it ran like a top no problems....don't know what your talking about...3.1L 90° V6.
The Z24 never came with a turbo 3.1L. Also the GM 3.1L / 3100 is not a 90 degree V6. It's a 60 degree V6. The Z24 had between 135HP and 140HP depending on the year. That's not exactly fast...not even at the time.
Loren Husky V6Z24.Com and it shows how much you know about them....and yes they came in turbo but very few were made....read the website and learn a few things before sounding stupid....
It's funny you say that because I clicked on your link and it confirmed exactly what I said. The 3100 Turbo was never put in the Cavalier. It was an ASC Mclaren 3100 engine and it was put in the Pontiac Grand Prix Turbo from 1989 to 1990 which I already knew. Also you'll find on your link if you bother to read that the 3100 turbo was a 60 degree V6, as you'll see I said above before you called me stupid. Here is a direct quote from www.v6z24.com/specs/31turbo "Unfortunately, this engine never made it into a J-body. It was only used for two years, in the 1989 and 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix TGP."
So if yours had a 3.1L Turbo, it was either aftermarket turbocharged, or engine swapped from the Pontiac.
Any questions?
wow. my dad had this cavalier when i was 5 yrs old
ever notice how "first" comments are never at the top? Take note.
I'm pretty sure this car has been on 1320 once before, the video is titled "Z06 vs Cavalier???"
They both have a blue cage too
Sick cavalier!
Camera guy was bothering the dude no chill should join a paparazzi squad
Love me some Cav. action!
Damn the Vtec kicking ass again! :(
I'm assuming there is some secret underneath fwd hoods at this event, because we couldn't see the Omnis motor neither.
Nice build great footage
Here in PA, I've seen the next generation Cavalier converted to RWD, and a drag car.
Those were and still are popular in the NHRA
they do show the motor quick at the beginning. its an old school 2.8!
That's is a Badass build love the car props💪🔥💯
My childhood dream car
