Hi Mustang Man - Thank you for your comment. And yes, they can be a bit tricky at times. Most times, if you already have a license, it's easier to just go through. But be sure the light hasn't already turned before you proceed through the intersection. All the best, Cheers Rick
I just failed my first road test last week because of yellow lights. She said I parked perfectly and was driving really good until the last 15 minutes of my test and I hit three yellow lights in a row. The first one I was going to run through but she yelled at me to stop, the second one I made a very rough stop and had to slam on my breaks and half my car was passed the stop line and after that I was so upset because I knew I failed that my driving just got really bad. Now I have really bad yellow light anxiety
Hi FrankieO7 - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. You've got a great attitude and we're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick PS - you'll have a different examiner on the next attempt. Also, have a look at this video my friend: ruclips.net/video/GRX7iW4Jqcs/видео.html
Why they simply won’t adopt a blinking green before it turns to yellow like in Europe? Or at least to install a timer on each traffic light which shows how much time you have left until it turns to yellow
Hi adilusa - Thank you for your comment. The timers are coming my friend, but they are slow to convert over my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Where I live, they don't have a timer but they got a sign that'll flash about 200 ft away from the intersection when the light is red or about to turn red. Basiclly, if you're going the speed limit and the sign is flashing before you pass it, you're going to hit the light.
Easy answer: the US is not 1 country! There are 51 legal autonomous self governing entities. Each one has legal oversight for traffic signals and road standards. Furthermore, each county has a transportation management and budget and different priorities. There is no way, past the national standard for Red, upper light, orange middle light and green, lower light. There are federal standards on US roads and Interstates as to lane width and markings. That’s why there are 1930’s speed limit signs for 2 lane roads that are totally inadequate for multi lane expressways. Try asking about one specific traffic light location as to who is responsible for maintenance and operational specs like the length of time for the Orange light. Good luck.
Flashing green cannot be adopted in Canada (which is where this video is) because flashing green has a different meaning in most provinces here. If you see a flashing green then that means you are the only one in the intersection with a green (everyone else is red).
They don’t have timers because the lights don’t change on a schedule. They change when sensors sense traffic arriving at the light and every other lane with traffic has had its chance.
I find this an issue in real life. hard stops come with risk as vehicles behind you may have heavy loads or weaker brakes than yours, the roads could be slippery or they may expect you to cross on the yellow. Also as an apprentice mechanic I believe it puts a lot of stress on your brakes. I believe the yellow should be longer so nobody feels like they have to slam on the brakes.
Haha this was always what I worried about before I did my road test. I prayed that I would not get a yellow light just at that time when you are indecisive whether to stop or no. I feared that if I got into that situation, if I stopped, it would be aggressive and the examiner would not be happy, and if I went through the intersection, he/she would have said you should have stopped. Luckily, I did not experience this situation on either my G2 or G test. Great video though in case it happens.
Hi Kyle - thanks for your great comment - yes, that is the fly in proverbial road test ointment. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does students have to be able to make a split second decision as to whether to proceed or go. And it is nerve racking. Little doubt these take some practice. I'm heading out to Ontario here in a week to visit my folks. Has it been hot there? All the best, Cheers Rick
Traffic lights give me so much anxiety! I failed my test the first time because the light turned yellow on me at the exact time when I was turning and I failed to yield and now when I’m approaching a traffic light, I get so nervous lol. I take my test in a few days so hopefully the traffic light gods are on my side.
Hi ki! - Thank you for your comment. I know it's hard, but move past your first test - think of it as a practice run. You're going to do awesome. Remember to breath during your test; that will cause your body to relax. Good luck on your road test! Be sure to let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick
I have the same problem. I've been lately just practicing a lot. I decelerate if the light has been green for a while and I'm just approaching it, that way if it turns yellow, I can slow down or stop.
During my road test 2 days ago, I was making a left turn and there were 2 cars turning left in front of me. Right after the 2nd car drove off, I drove forward a bit and got into the crosswalk a bit, but then the light turned yellow. I know I should've kept going and turned, but I chickened out and stopped haha... I did pass though -- your videos were SUPER helpful -- thank you!!!!!

Good for you! Exact same thing happened to me, - 2 cars in front and everything. However, I was already about passed the crosswalk when the light turned yellow and I kept going because I wasn’t gonna stop in the middle of the intersection? My instructor screamed STOP and made me reverse lmao. Don’t make this mistake. Just freakin stop

Yeah they are really, really, really strict about the yellow light. I just failed my G test because I didn't make a FULL STOP at yellow when I had to make a right turn. Worst part is, it was essentially the last part of the test.
Hi Azon - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. We're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Yes. I've had many times where the green light at an intersection kept deceiving me every time and it turned yellow JUST when I was right by the stop line! I wonder if I should slow my car down every time before I come into an intersection on a skills test, because some of those green lights are mean!

I remember one time When I was driving, the light had turned yellow. I got so nervous and slammed on my breaks. 😌 so what I do now is pick a point of no return. If the light turns yellow before I reach the cross walk, I stop. If I am in the cross walk when the light turns yellow I go.
@@srimayierravelli5233 Omg i can relate ! the traffic lights are giving me so much anxiety! I feel like my timing is always off. I ran a red light today too :/
This reminds me of a crosswalk traffic light system. Green = Safe to cross = walking guy Yellow = don’t start crossing, finish crossing if you started already = Flashing Red Hand Red = Don’t Walk = Steady Red Hand
Hi Saiful Abu - that is a awesome news. Thank you for letting us know. And congratulations for passing on your first attempt. This happened to me last week. my dad is teaching me how to drive, I'm going a bit too fast near the intersection then the yellow light pops up my dad was like "oops" I got nervous and stepped on the break but that was not my intention I would had gone through, since then I'm overthinking when I'm passing at traffic lights.
Hi Tupa c - Thank you for your comment and informational story. Little doubt, yellow lights take a bit of practice. And remember, for the purposes of a road test, yellow and red are the same colour. In other words, if you can get the vehicle stopped, bring the vehicle to a stop. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi TONY B the TECH TIGER - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. And yes, there is a bit of an art about whether to proceed at a yellow or stop. After getting your license it is often better to proceed with caution rather than slamming on the brakes and risk being rear-ended. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test no not really, I'm very bored being laid off from my job every summer for 3 months and there is unless you want to send a couple hundred dollars to a stranger to make it through the last couple weeks before work restars back up, lol just kidding lol.

I'm taking my test tomorrow and yellow lights are the one thing I fear, but this made things very clear and I will make every reasonable effort to stop for a yellow light.
Hi Faith Barlas - thanks for your comment. And we're happy to hear that the information cleared up your approach to yellow lights. Good luck on your road test. And remember to breath - you're going to do awesome. Let us know how it turns out. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hello Mr Rick, yes I have been caught at a yellow light at least once during my driving lessons and I had to brake aggressively. The thought of doing this during my road test makes me uncomfortable. I wish the lights had timer on their bodies to better understand and anticipate color changes changes. Thanks for making this great video, I really liked it.
Hi Umar Ali - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome. Little doubt there is some trepidation about yellow lights on a road test - it is a split second decision that can make or brake your road test. It takes a bit of practice. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Guido Mista - Thank you for your comment and confession. Yellow lights can be intimidating for sure my friend. Yet, there are a signs that the light is going to change. Look for those signs: the timer; the hand sign flashing; traffic lined up in the cross street. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I agree Sir. But I have seen someone handle these very smoothly in a semi With the right technique and practice we will overcome these challenges. Thx Rick for your teaching that is making a difference 👍

I was driving on a highway (with a learners permit, and a legal license holder in the passenger seat), at the speed limit of 55 mph and I came across an upcoming traffic light intersection; the light was green, but then quickly turned yellow and at this point I couldn't judge my "point of no return" and ended up running a red light at 35 miles per hour. I had to scan the intersection, and honk my horn to let other road users know of the impending danger, but luckily no one was injured and I have learned a hard lesson about yellow lights.
This is exactly what happened on G road test yesterday, I was coming at an intersection and lights turned yellow, I looked back to see whether I can make a stop safely, but there was a car really close to me in the back and if I would stopped, there were chances he/she would have rammed me. I took the decision to not stop and went forward on the "YELLOW LIGHT", examiner failed me saying you crossed on red light, which was actually and the car behind and the car behind that car went too safely.
Hi Anuj Agarwal - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. Unfortunately, there are decisions that you make to stay safe, but the examiner doesn't see it the same way. We're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick PS - you'll have a different examiner on the next attempt.
I did the same thing on todays road test. It was so frustrating because I did everything correctly before the last two intersection from driving back to the test center and that was the second time I attempted the test. I went through the yellow light because I judged it wasn't safe to stop but the examiner just said that I ran through a red light. I would've passed if I did it otherwise
If you’re approaching an intersection with a stop light and it’s green but all of a sudden right when you’re about to pass it turns yellow then red, how do you avoid “running the red light”?
Thanks Rick, Appreciate your videos. IMHO, A vehicles length is too short a distance to bring to a stop at a yellow light, especially if it is a large/heavy truck. What if I am able to bring my light car to a stop, but there is a really heavy loaded truck behind me which can not stop in that distance. What if the road is quite slippery/icy? A better way is to know how long the light will remain amber in the area you are driving. If it is fixed like 3 seconds / 4 seconds, adjust your speed way ahead of the intersection to your vehicle's stopping distance, given all the other circumstances. It is also important to be able to estimate the braking distance of the vehicle behind you, and the gap they are maintaining. There is a low chance that if you enter the intersection when yellow, you will hit something. However, if you brake aggressively and there is a truck behind you, who did not expect you braking hard, they will be rear ending you. Let me know what you think.
Hi irfanece - Thank you for your great comment. Before stopping your vehicle, always, always check the centre mirror to be sure that it's safe to bring your vehicle to a stop safely without a big truck parking in your truck. You're right, no vehicle can stop in its own length; therefore, if you're within one vehicle length, you have to go through the intersection. And it's not always the case the you're going to be safe if you charge the yellow. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Kayla Hess - Thank you for your comment. And with practice, driving is both easy & fun. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
IMO it is actually much safer for everyone when the traffic lights are equipped with countdown timer display, sadly the stupid law in my country forbid the usage of countdown timer display on traffic lights (making it harder for everyone to tell when a green light is going to turn yellow). Now I'm anxious everytime I have to drive & approach traffic light.

A trick ive found that USUALLY works. If there is a left turn lane there is a solid white line on the right of the turn lane. If you are doing the speed limit or less and not to the beginning of that line when the yellow light comes on you will not make the yellow and have to stop. If you are past the halfway point you may not be able to stop in time. Check your mirrors before you stop.
I have failed my class 5A test yesterday, because of theses yellow lights. He said, "I was driving very good and following the speed limits as well", but When I approached the intersection the lights turned yellow and I didn't have much time and space to stop. The instructor yelled at me to stop but I was already in the middle of the intersection so I kept going. Then because of that I felt even nervous and approached another intersection and it went yellow again and Unfortunately, I failed.
Hi Shivam Saragara - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. You've got a great attitude and we're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. I am practicing to get my driving license in Brussels, Belgium. The rule here, as I guess everywhere, is that if you get a yellow light and it's too late to stop safely then you go through. The problem is that in many intersections the yellow lights last very very little. The result is many drivers are getting flushed, having to pay 170 euros fines. Fortunately, I didn't have any fine yet but I had to hard break a few times. It seems that yellow lights are money makers for the state so drivers need a very sharp sense of how fresh is the green light.
Say if someone is tail gating you and it is a yellow light. If you stop the car could come super close to you but if you go through the car behind you could stop without chance of hitting your car, what do you do? Does it vary for each state? I’m in Idaho! Thanks
What if you're a driver that pays close attention to the drivers around you and is aware of someone following too close for several blocks, you come up to an intersection and you're getting close to the point where you will go thru if it turns yellow, and it turns yellow? (happened to me) I had to make a split decision, the car weighed on my decision and knowing I would safely go thru the intersection without the possibility of any vehicles being able to come close to me, my view was clear of the intersection because I don't tailgate, foot hovering over brake, I assessed that making a hard stop was more dangerous than me going thru the intersection as it turned red while I entered it. Just happened to be a cop car at the stop light. I was going a little under the speed limit and if I was fallowing close to the car Infront of me I would've made it thru without getting a ticket. I don't fallow close, I've always disliked tailgaters. I've never hit any vehicle and I've never been hit, and I would like to keep it that way. I know if the car behind me runs into me that it's their fault, but if they did hit me, it could push me into the intersection and create a greater possibility of injuries. If this ticket sticks after I go to court, I guess because of them I'll be a less safe driver (I'll be doing hard stops, I don't drive a semi, but it's still a big heavy full size crew cab 4x4 pickup). Then have to deal with insurance companies, repairing vehicles, possible injuries etc. The most common accident is a rear end one, 28% - 30%
I stopped aggressively for the first time yesterday before the yellow light and crossed stop line. Distance was more than one car and speed was around 45 miles. Hesitated between proceed or to stop
@@smartdrivetest Thanks for asking. Your videos are super helpful. Everything is fine but after that incident, when I see a green light I try to get and proceed intersection faster to avoid aggressive stops on yellow. I started to drive myself only a few weeks ago and until that I had asked my husband to accompany me. I mostly try to use interior roads than freeways. I am not good at expressways. When I drive in the right lane I become nervous from mergings. I need to yield or speed up.
Great adviCe bro!!!👍I have had my license for over 40 years now and if it iS safe for me to stop at the yellow light I do so...but if I am close to the intersection...I will proceed right thru aS I have noticeD about 90% percent of the time I have another car behind me not watChinG their stoppinG distance and I have alwayS tried my best to avoid beinG rear ended!!!👍DrivinG through yellow lightS truly involves followinG good road habitS...but also payinG attention to the driver behinD you by strongly relying on my Intuition to guage their behavior!!!✌☕☕☕
ALSO for the purpose of Cameras at intersection. I would would normally accelerate from 35 to 42 and then slow down after i passsed the intersections. Two tickets later, Im going to court to fight it. Theres a plenty of studies that show higher chance of back end accidents
So I came up to an intersection, Ive got my permit, and why whole family and dog were in the car. It turned yellow and I was just scared because I’m not sure if I would have to break hard or not, so I kinda floored it and right as I entered the intersection, the light turned red and my dad got pissed. I was so nervous so I just told him I did it because I thought I could beat the light.
So, my aunt is training me for my first driving test, and she’s been helping me A LOT so I pass on the first time. (I never had driver’s training) And, the thing we noticed that gets me the most, are these yellow lights!! I panic when I get to them. And I feel like they play tricks on me, and as soon as I get under the light, in the intersection, or just as I make it to the light, it changes yellow. I’m afraid I’m going to get rear ended by someone behind me if I stop suddenly. What can I do to help me feel better about stopping at them and not want to continue to go through because I’m so afraid?
Hi MicKayla Lynn - thanks for your great comment and query. I just want to clarify - you did pass your license test and now have a driver's license? This fact is going to determine my answer. All the best, Cheers Rick
Ok stop for yellow light and treat them as red light. But what about yellow flashing light? Do I have to come to a complete stop too? Or just slow down
Will entering an intersection on yellow light (with the truck) trigger red light camera? Taking into account the truck and trailer length, truck can't completely go through an intersection only during yellow light, the very last wheels on the trailer will certainly pass the stopping line when the lights are red.
I think we all got the miss information about the yellow light because we are so used to seeing people, friends, family going “slow” on a yellow but on the road test we are mistaken
What about during snowy/icy road conditions? Surely braking more suddenly for yellow could cause you to fishtail or skid since there could be black ice.
Hi GD Games - you have to make your decision according to the conditions of the road my friend. See this video too: ruclips.net/video/BPpRKeheX00/видео.html Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
If the student takes his/her right foot off the accelerator approaching the intersection during the test, & the light @ any moment is ready to turn from green to red, will the examiner take points off the student for taking their foot off the gas pedal just to cover the brakes?

Thank you Rick! what can you suggest to do if before you reached the stop line and it turns yellow ? Slamming the breaks seems to be an instant fail to the examiner and passing through a yellow light is also an instant fail.
Examiner gave fail decision when my from bumper was already at the stop line she told you proceeded in yellow, any comments would be great as I have requested review for the decision, intersection was clear
Hi Kuldeep S. Waraich - sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. Not knowing the specific information, it is almost impossible for me to comment. Unfortunately, a lot of these decisions are up to the discretion of the examiner. And as well, it is unlikely that anything will come of your review. I would suggest to just forget it and invest your energy in taking another test. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hello sir, I did my G2 road test today but I didn't pass because of confused traffic yellow light. I think you recommend make sure just slowly stop right? otherwise, the examiner will count violation. I will do my another test on April 8 and focus on watching this video.
Rick, I failed my driving test the other day, because i was going to do a left turn on a signalized intersection, i had to wait for the light to go yellow and complete the maneuver, as i was passing the light turned red but i was already committed and the examiner said I passed a red light and i failed. what do you think ?
Hi iman gharraie - Thank you for your comment and query. Without being there it is difficult to comment; however, if you are in the intersection, you have to clear the intersection. See this video: ruclips.net/video/QQskdDGE6LY/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi, I was curious on day if like a car is coming very fast behind you and your in the drivers test and the light turns yellow but a car is super close and if you stop it couldn’t end up super close to your vehicle, what would you do. I’m so scared for my test
I failed my road test because I didn't stop for the yellow light. the yellow light during my test lasted like only 2 seconds, and when the red light turned on, 2/3 of my car had passed the stop line, but the officer told me I shouldn't pass the red light. WTF. I have the same question as you do. My strategy for the next time is driving slow when following the front cars, and prepare to stop at the yellow light because if i am driving slow, the cars behind me would also be slow.
Just letting everyone know! A yellow light does NOT mean the same thing as a red light. Yellow lights mean “stop unless unsafe to do so” so if you feel as if it’s unsafe to do so. Keep going. Because sometimes there is situations where you pull into the intersection to make a left turn and you wait so long the light turns yellow, that is fine. It happens all the time.
The problem with USA driving rules are most of the turns are not controlled. You have to yield and you have bunch of impatient people behind you. The lights have no count downs. In my country you can only turn when it is green for you. So if it is green you are good to go. More than half of lights have count downs. We have lights around roundabouts and crosswalks are right after lights not before lights. So your limit line is right under lights before intersection not far from lights after the intersection. This way yellow lights are not an issue and pedestrians are safer.

Yellow lights is the one thing I am concerned about on my road test. Since stopping to aggressively is a fail, go through the light it turns red sooner then you thought you fail. Kinda hoping all my traffic lights are red on my test.. no confusion there lol

Hi Kati Swan - For the purposes of a driver's test, RED & YELLOW mean the same thing - STOP. Unless you've already moved into the intersection, no - bring the vehicle to a stop. This skill will take a bit of practice leading up to your road test. But with a bit of practice you'll get the hang of it. Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rick.I Live in Texas and our traffic light is different whenever you make a left turn on the intersection the yellow light blinks on some Texas traffic lights and also when I was making a left waiting on cars to clear the light turn yellow so I panic a little bit then the light turn red. fast and i quickly make that left turn and looking at my review side mirror looking right and think make this left before the other traffic on my right goes ahead because sometimes these Texas traffic lights. switch fast😯😑
Hi Taneisha Johnson - Thank you for your comment and query. And yes, some traffic lights appear to go "straight" to red. This video may give you a bit more information: ruclips.net/video/QQskdDGE6LY/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
i hate yellow lights. in some cities, the pedestrian light will have a number that count down, in that case it's easier to predict whether to stop or not. in some places, the light just suddenly turn yellow and the speed limit is 80km/h. how am i suppose to know if i can stop safely.
Hi XempireX18 - Thank you for your comment and query. You need to look at the signals that indicate that the light is going to change: 1) the hand signal for pedestrians is flashing or solid; 2) the traffic is back up on the cross street; and 3) there aren't any pedestrians crossing the intersection and are waiting to cross the street. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest Hi, thanks for the reply. These are good indications. But there are some intersections that doesn't have any pedestrian crossing and have no hand signal. The traffic cross street doesn't have many cars backing up because the street is a small street. They are in the rural area with speed limit of 80.
Hi XempireX18 - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your reply. In the instances to which you're referring, the light on the main road doesn't change that often. In many instances it only changes when there is cross traffic. In that case you can be fairly sure it isn't going to change, however, if you think the light is going to change, cover the brake and proceed through the intersection. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hey Rick thank you for the informative videos, I was hoping that you could do a video on tailgating and the safest ways to handle that situation during day and night, thanks rick.

Hey what must you do if you are driving and there is smooth traffic, the way is clear all ways and you need to make a turn to the left but the yellow light appears? Are you supposed to turn or stop?
Thanks for the instruction, Rick! I have a question about the yellow light. Today I failed my road test because I did not stop before the yellow light. I didn't mean to pass through that, but the green light lasted a short time, letting only two cars in front of me to pass. Then, when I was right on the stop line, the yellow light just popped up lasting like only one second, then it turned into red. It looks like half of my car had passed the stop line when the red light turned on, but the officer told me I shouldn't pass a red light... So next time if I see the yellow light, I should make a full stop, but what if rear-end collision happens because I stop too abruptly? Will I fail because of that? Really appreciate your response!
Hi Yiming Chen - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. You've got a great attitude and we're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. Yes, yellow lights a tough one my friend. And yes, if there's a car behind that's tailgating, you're going to have to proceed. But know that a vehicle won't stop in it's own length. Have a look at this video too: ruclips.net/video/NiDn0pYIvO8/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick PS - you'll have a different examiner on the next attempt.
So what you're saying is that for the driving test, you should drive dangerously? Slamming on the brakes for a yellow is dangerous, and often causes evasive maneuvers for the car behind you.
That's NOT what I'm say at all my friend. First, when driving, you must know the signs of "stale" green lights. The countdown timer near zero, the STOP hand flashing, cars backed up on the cross street, no pedestrians, and most cars have moved through the intersection on your street. And when driving, you need situational awareness of what's around your car on all 4-sides. As well, know that yellow mean "STOP, if it's safe to do so." Thus, if you do make an aggressive stop so you don't run a red light, you already know if there is a car behind you because you've been implementing your scanning pattern and know what traffic is to the rear. For the scanning pattern, see this vid: ruclips.net/video/TrtgVbd87SY/видео.html And see this vid for unexpected events on a driver's test: ruclips.net/video/afkc2fNjbnU/видео.html Drop us a note if we can help further. I was making a right hand turn as the light turned yellow. A car on my right passed me on the sidewalk and I hit her. My company said it was my fault because the light turned yellow and I proceeded to turn. Was I at fault?
I was driving a 53 foot tractor trailer. I was half the distance of my truck and trailer from the intersection when it turned yellow. The police said it wasn't my fault and no ticket but my company charged me with a chargeable because they say I should of slammed on my brakes when the light turned yellow and I then wouldn't of hit the car passing me illegally on my right.
I got failed just because, I stopped before the stop line instantly, as the green lights turns yellow, as it was dangerous move. I wanna ask for you what to do when green lights blinking to for which turns into yellow and then red?

The other day I was about 4 or so car lengths from an intersection as the light turned yellow, so I slowed to a stop. But the person behind me was right on my tail and ended up hitting me... I already really struggle with how to handle yellow lights, so what should I do in the future if someone is following too close when the light turns yellow in that distance? I really want to avoid another collision like that...

In a case like you showed us where you conducted an aggressive stop, for the sake of a road test, would any difference be made if another vehicle were following closely behind? Would the instructor likely forgive going through the light from a slightly longer distance or would they expect you to conduct the aggressive stop regardless of whether someone is on your tail?
Hi G&G Films - Thank you for your comment and query. If someone is tailgating you, you have to increase your following distance in the front. And yes, if there is someone on you "tail", you will proceed through the yellow, because as you stated, you don't want to risk being rear-ended. This answers my previous concern about the FedEx driver tailgating the Mirage. However, if you speed up, and they speed up, and a cop sees it, aren't they going to typically go after the leader of the pack (logic being that you need to set your pace to the established flow of traffic)?

hello i have question if any person cross the red light then he stop ,can he back to correct position before he cross the light.if his lane is no car on it.

THANK you very much for replay i mean in real driving not in the road test ,sometimes the person not recognize well ,so if the road empty behind me and i pass red light by few meters can i back to line before traffic light
Hi Mohamed Fathel - Thank you for your comment. And no, you should never back up in traffic - it's dangerous. Hi Rick. This is what I have been afraid of lately. Can you please suggest how to handle this situation well? Do you still drive at the same speed limit when you see the flashing hand 50- 100 metres away or do you need to slow down to prepare to stop for yellow light?
Hi goijung1 - thank you for your comment and query. If you see the flashing hand, be prepared to stop by covering the brake and scanning the intersection. As you get more and more practice, you are going to be better equipped to know when the traffic light is going to turn yellow. And no, I wouldn't slow down, just be prepared to stop, and if you are pretty sure that the light is going to change, then you should be prepared to stop. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test Thank you so much, Rick for kindly answering my questions and always being there to help. All the best to you and your family! Thank you from bottom of my heart.💖
I disagree with this information to a degree. Heavier vehicles take longer to stop, so if you're in a small car and able to stop within your own vehicles length, yet the FedEx driver is practically tailgating you (they shouldn't be, but they are the most disturbing thing on the road in Missouri), it might be a bad idea to slam the breaks even if you're undergoing a driver's test. Stop only if it is safe to do so, you can always retake the test so long as you are alive to do so. My vehicle stops on a dime so I have developed a "lazy eye" that is always on the rear view while I drive to see how far up my... lane... someone is before slamming the breaks on yellow. It's like Stephen King except I don't drive Christine, I drive a Mirage.
Hi Nesseight - Thank you for your comment and query. We're not disagree, however, any vehicle--even a big truck--will stop in its own length. And as you said, you have to check traffic to the rear before coming to a stop. If it's not safe to stop because another driver is tailgating, some times it is safer to go through the intersection. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

She said I parked perfectly and was driving really good until the last 15 minutes of my test and I hit three yellow lights in a row. Same brother, just failed because of it today
@NuraChung youre not alone i feel that way too
Traffic lights give me so much anxiety! I failed my test the first time because the light turned yellow on me at the exact time when I was turning and I failed to yield and now when I’m approaching a traffic light, I get so nervous lol. I running yellow light all the time, this is a wake up call, thank you Rick!

You make driving seem so easy
Hi Kayla Hess - Thank you for your comment. And with practice, driving is both easy & fun. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
taking my road test in 4 days.. freaking outttt
This is inspiring he had to look around just to find a yellow light that’s a lot of work thanks
Yes, I do caught out with yellow light and it makes me anxious at time especially when there is high traffic volume or road crossing pavement poor
I’m taking my road test later today and i am scared that imma do something wrong at a yellow light. But thank you for helping.

Thanks
Good point Rick to deal with Yellow traffic lights in my incoming road test.
It's always a bit daunting the first time you do that. You're okay...car's okay? How's the driving going? Cheers Rick
Thank you so much for this information!
Hi P¡nkPanther420 - you are most welcome my friend. Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
But, my aunt also says it’s better to slam on my brakes, and lose a few points, rather than to proceed through and automatically fail.
Hi MicKayla Lynn - thanks for your great comment and query. I just want to clarify - you did pass your license test and now have a driver's license? This fact is going to determine my answer. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi MicKayla Lynn - I'd like to respond - could you answer my question above please?
@@smartdrivetest can you describe both scenarios having a license and not
sir is it possible you can post a lot of clips of you crossing or stopping at yellow light? this will help us a lot i am still new to driving
I got caught out by a yellow light with my dad I didn't know if I should stop or keep going.I slow down then I ran off the red light
it's a tricky one to understand for new drivers to figure out but it didn't take me that long to
I think we all got the miss information about the yellow light because we are so used to seeing people, friends, family going “slow” on a yellow but on the road test we are mistaken
This is so helpful.

what can you suggest to do if before you reached the stop line and it turns yellow ? Slamming the breaks seems to be an instant fail to the examiner and passing through a yellow light is also an instant fail.
Sa' am that was a highway stoplight that is why I have no idea it will turn yellow
In a intersection like yellow and it turns red before you go under the light what happens

Can I still make a turn in the direction of the flashing yellow arrows? Particularly on a road test?
Hi Kati Swan - For the purposes of a driver's test, RED & YELLOW mean the same thing - STOP. Unless you've already moved into the intersection, no - bring the vehicle to a stop. Hi Rick.I Live in Texas and our traffic light is different whenever you make a left turn on the intersection the yellow light blinks on some Texas traffic lights and also when I was making a left waiting on cars to clear the light turn yellow so I panic a little bit then the light turn red. fast and i quickly make that left turn and looking at my review side mirror looking right and think make this left before the other traffic on my right goes ahead because sometimes these Texas traffic lights. switch fast😯😑

i hate yellow lights. in some cities, the pedestrian light will have a number that count down, in that case it's easier to predict whether to stop or not.
in some places, the light just suddenly turn yellow and the speed limit is 80km/h. how am i suppose to know if i can stop safely.

Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. this comment is 3 years old but I just wanted to say your test officer is dumb..how frustrating!
What vehicle were you driving? What did the police say?
I was driving a 53 foot tractor trailer. I was half the distance of my truck and trailer from the intersection when it turned yellow.
The police said it wasn't my fault and no ticket but my company charged me with a chargeable because they say I should of slammed on my brakes when the light turned yellow and I then wouldn't of hit the car passing me illegally on my right.
How can I proceed when I approach the left intersection and the light still green and then turn yellow
I got failed just because, I stopped before the stop line instantly, as the green lights turns yellow, as it was dangerous move. I wanna ask for you what to do when green lights blinking to for which turns into yellow and then red?

In a case like you showed us where you conducted an aggressive stop, for the sake of a road test, would any difference be made if another vehicle were following closely behind? Would the instructor likely forgive going through the light from a slightly longer distance or would they expect you to conduct the aggressive stop regardless of whether someone is on your tail?
Hi G&G Films - Thank you for your comment and query. If someone is tailgating you, you have to increase your following distance in the front. That's an awesome way of explaining it my friend. I can see that on a meme!! All the very best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rick, when turning on left can I enter intersection on flashing yellow or has to wait behind the crosswalk line till I get the clearance
I failed my class 5 today. I saw the countdown and stopped too early on green
Hi thanks alot for your videos, but I have question for my friend that failed , and can you explain what does that mean (( v- entered intersection on amber from stop position)) ?!
😤 I am having the same problem, and my test is next week
Hi Lindani Mpilo Mthembu - Thank you for your comment. You're going to do awesome. Remember to breath; that will cause your body to relax. Good luck on your road test! Be sure to let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick
