Personally I think calling it "Open Zone" instead of "Open World" makes perfect sense given how they structured it.
It's still a series of independent locations that don't physically connect to eachother in any way, they're just large and open-ended environments rather than courses.
Basically, imagine if they took the level design philosophy of adventure era treasure hunting stages, and just scaled them up to a ridiculous degree; that is "open zone"

I've been playing it and in my opinion I think it's the best Sonic game since the Adventure ones! I love the fact that you don't have to wait until a Last Story to get a Super Sonic boss battle, and the extra animations that get shown during the titan battles are interesting for sure! The pop-ins can be annoying, some of the cyberspace stages in the third update can be frustratingly difficult, and it sucks that the story made it be that Shadow has no reason to be seen or playable in it, (the Ultimate Life Form is only playable in Frontiers if you download a mod for that.) Good that the story isn't too childish though, and that the character personalities seem to be fixed up. I was so excited when I found out that 1 of the collectable jukebox songs was the main theme song of SA2, what an absolute banger that song is! I think that Frontiers was made as a bit of a test game so that when Sega would find out what parts of it players do and don't like, that company would know what should be and what shouldn't be put into the next big Sonic game that they will try to make.

    • @joeboosta6309

I absolutely loved this game, I think SEGA and Sonic Team pulled off the Open-Zone formula very well, and Ian’s Flynn’s writing was immaculate, especially with the Final Horizon. I’m sure whatever they’re cooking up for next year will be amazing! I would like the ledge-grab mechanic from SA2 back after 22 years though.

I mean it has a few issues like this is lack of polish etc..but I agree with most of the points you mentioned and despite with it's issues and lack of polish etc.. still managed to be an amazing game..I love this game to death
You know if they made this game a little more polished, fixed the pop-ins and make the physics more consistent well chaos island's physics in particular because the other islands have consistent physics but for chaos island yeah... it's abit inconsistent
And if they tweaked cyberspace's momentum..like when you let go of the control he stops immediately stop in a dime.. showing there's no momentum in cyberspace sure now don't get me wrong after the 3 updates the momentum and physics of the game improved like.. ALOT!! Including Cyberspace's physics aswell and im glad they did but I wish they tweaked the Cyberspace's physics and momentum abit more like sonic walking on loop-de-loops or when you're moving sonic litterally stop in a dime if you let go of the controller sure it could Work out in the open zone but not in the cyberspace..
In summarise if they could've just
Tweaked the Cyberspace's momentum and physics abit more
    Fixing the pop-ins
Making chaos island's physics more consistent...
And made this game more polished this game could've been from great to a perfect game.
And now with the 3 updates this game is almost a masterpiece but so far from an absolute masterpiece.
So my overall rating is 9/10 because of the updates

Sonic Frontiers relays the message of: “moving on”, and “ ew beginnings”. We see this as, the main cast are written with the knowledge of past games/events in mind. Key events like, the crisis on the Ark, Chaos nearly destroying Station Square and the world, Gaia and Dark Gaia, Sonic Heroes and Neo Metal, the mention of Sonic and Eggman’s bitter rivalry, the Echidna tribe, G.U.N. and the Black Arms, the Babalonyians, and finally, Eggman’s last campaign where he’d actually taken over Earth. The cast are written slightly more mature, in a grounded setting, with a serious story. The game ends on a hopeful note of looking to the future, and I believe, that’s just what Sega and Sonic Team intend: Marking Frontiers as the beginning of a new chapter for Sonic. Though for those that don’t know the lore, there are plenty of summarized lore videos about Sonic to check out. By fans, and officially on the Sonic RUclips channel. I recommend it.

The parkour and the speeding, doing missions, boss missions are good. Never dull moment. Don’t understand why people say it’s repetitive….

This game is awesome! I still play it and have poured hundreds of hours into it! I just love running around the open zones and completing those platforming challenges! While the platforms are scattered around with seemingly no cohesion, I think they're still well designed and add to that mystery of looking AI generated, which helps with the backstory of Sage, and I don't mind the platforms being suspended above the ground, as I still think the game looks great. There's just something about it, the aesthetic and the music, and especially the story, that makes me want to keep playing it. The enemy and boss designs are stellar. The titan fights are highlights, though gameplay wise, they are really easy. I agree about Cyberspace, and I don't mind them reusing old levels as long as they are fun. I wish the combat was a little better, and Sonic's parry timing should be changed across each difficulty. It's bizarre that they didn't do it for Sonic yet for other characters they did. With the latest patch, the physics are better, it's less buggy, but the difficulty has been eased, which was in response to the complaints from fans, but I wish they did that as a choice, rather than replacing the previous difficulty. But despite that, I think this is better than Shadow Generations. I think it has the soul of an open world Sonic game. Though I do wish they'd further update it a little more, as it would be perfect for me. Do you think they'll still update or patch this in the near future? I'd love it if they could fix the pop-in.
I can't believe it's been a year since the best Sonic game got the best update! I find all playable characters fun to play, though not as much as Sonic, of course. They made the platforming challenges much harder and more open-ended, less linear than previous ones, which were too simple and automated. The new ending is a mixed bag for me. But the story is even better than before. What makes this game better than others is that I think it does playable characters the best. It also doesn't waste your playtime with non Sonic gimmicks as much as otherSonic games, especially Adventures 1 and 2, and Sonic feels great and fast to control. I disagree heavily when people say it's a Breath of the Wild ripoff as while it's clearly inspired, it also has a lot of differences, and I think I like it more. I even like that some challenges make use of momentum and make you think outside the box. The puzzles are mostly not challenging, but more like movement exercises, and i don't mind doing them. Overall, a masterpiece ✨️
Yeah, I don't mind the reusing of level layouts as the new movement makes it feel different. I similarly don't mind the koco quests, with most being optional, as long as they're not too annoying or pacebreaking. The worst part is probably the pinball minigame or the laser puzzle or the crane task. Cyberspace looks exactly like Generations, but I do like how they at least added the digital effect to make it feel new. Also, I like the presentation. I think the animations are quite good in general, better than in previous games, and I don't mind the realistic artstyle. While it's a triple A game, I do wish there were some CGI cutscenes, but that's probably because of the day-night system, so everything runs in real-time.
As I said before, I really liked Frontiers, and it was almost perfect. In my opinion, it can only get better, not worse. Forces, while I think it's very overhated, and I kinda like it, I also find it kinda hard to defend, and I feel it was the dip in budget and quality and passion, it terms of both gameplay, design, story, and presentation, even though I don't think it's souless or lazy like many say. Frontiers, to me, felt like a high budget game, even though some corners were clearly cut. Not to be a blatant hater, but I don't think we'll ever return to that dip of content in the 2010s, as while I think saying it was the definition of mediocrity is a bit harsh, I don't think you could get worse than that. The next mainline game might not always be better than the last, but at least it won't ever be of that quality, let alone worse. Frontiers might have been great, but it can only get better, and that's hard to imagine!

Some people call it trash but this is a big step up, so idc what haters say about it, this game is golden and if Sega builds upon this idea for future games and Sonic fans are willing to be more open, then Sonic game quality should become as good as Mortal Kombat eventually. Not to mention open world seems to really work for him! And then the boss fights...Before playing the game, I love the music but had no clue if they played randomly or at a boss fight (except Undefeatable which I heard while on the Switch version (which was not a fun experience) before moving to the PS5 version). I was pretty young when Sonic 1 came out, but I played the hell out of that and Sonic 2 (arguably one of my favourite games ever). I watched the shows.... kind of pestered my parents about it. They got stuck watching SatAM with me because it was on after Batman but before X-Men (which my parents used to watch without fail).

Being open-world doesn’t give it as much replay-ability as most Sonic games (where you can replay the levels on a completed save file, which is fun in games like Unleashed and Secret Rings that are bloated with filler)
I just did the stupid of playing the game so much that I ended up liking it less, taking too long to realize that it’s not the type of game you can replay over and over and over again. So it’s my 3rd favorite Sonic game now, behind Unleashed and Secret Rings.

i laughed out loud when you said they designed this game for people with adhd because its just so real 😭 everyone complains about it being repetitive or boring and i dont understand how bc its so addictive to me. my adhd brain will happily do silly little tasks in the open zone for 8 hours straight.
my only complaint really was that the standard ending was so easy, which has more to do with the devs being rushed to finish than anything else, but also that they overcompensated for it with the dlc. im not a super experienced sonic player, my intro game was also sonic heroes on the ps2 at least 15 years ago and i suck at it to this day, so the new ending is nearly completely inaccessible to me 🥲 its a shame because 90% of the base game is so smooth, and i was able to play without getting stuck or coasting through too easily despite frontiers being the only modern sonic game i had played aside from heroes, sa2, and satbk at that point.
im still on the 4th tower in the dlc and i think it might be the breaking point for me lol. if its a skill issue i can accept that. at least i got to watch penny parker stream it when it was released.

Only halfway through the knuckles island, have had no desire to keep playing. Sonic feels so slow always in cyberspace, and the combat makes every enemy feel the same (not to mention the copy paste block designs floating in the air…). I feel like I’ve played all that the game has to offer after that first supersonic boss fight. Also, the non linear storytelling is dumb (maybe just cuz I’m not done with it though). Easily my last fav sonic game I’ve played, does it get better?

    • @ActuallyParty

ngl knuckles’ island was my least favourite as well, but if the movement isn’t clicking yet the game might not seem much better but i personally think it does. the boss fights are all very fun to experience and the final horizon dlc can be an actual challenge sometime. so overall id say i personally think the games gets better, but its all subjective in the end

While this is a passably decent video, I think there are some major problems with it. Most notably with the titling and framing of it. These sorts of videos tend to lead to greater polarization within discourse no matter what community or topic it is. Way too often have I found videos that have titles like "X is HORRIBLE" or "Y is AMAZING" and I know this is done for the reasons of clickbait and playing to the algorithms preferences, but I don't think prioritizing views over healthy discourse is a good idea long term speaking. We have already seen how this has damaged the internet in general and more specifically the Sonic community. People either think something is irredeemable or entirely without blemish and adopt extremely maladjusted takes which often then turns into hyper defensiveness or hyper aggression. But more on that later. Right now I want to touch on some of the points you made in this video.
00:04 - Most of us were and rightfully so. SEGA is fully to blame for the poor presentation that was initially given. For months prior all we had gotten was the same cinematic of Sonic running through a forest and when we finally got to see the game we were blessed with one of the most un-engaging gameplay demos. A part of this can be attributed to IGN just not showcasing the gameplay all that well, but it was very apparent that SEGA had provided outlets with a build that was from earlier in the game's development rather than closer to its release date. The lackluster demonstration can be chalked up primarily to poor gameplay showcasing combined with a lack of polish in the build itself. The textures looked bland, the lighting was somewhat off, and the gameplay loop was not well conveyed whatsoever.
00:09 - This was me when I initially had played frontiers as well on launch night. But that's primarily because my expectations were so incredibly lowered by the mediocre showcase that happened during E3 Week 2022 (E3 of course didn't happen but June is still considered E3 month due to all of the game reveals from companies around that time) that I went in expecting another Sonic 2006 quite literally. Many others did to. Most people were left under the impression that the game was going to be barely functional.
0:38 - I am not sure if this could really be considered a "boost game" in the pure sense. Sonic Frontiers plays much more like a hybrid between the Adventure formula and the Boost formula. Especially with the introduction of the spin dash that happened during the summer update.
01:33 - This is definitely an example of Frontiers' duct taped together physics system. Being launched like a rocket off random peddles or odd slope geometry was most certainly not planned and you can tell because Sonics model will just hover at a weird angle as he flies through the air. Many people complained about how you could hit a small bump in the road and be sent flying to neverland which- understandably- players found frustrating. I think being able to fly off slopes and stuff is cool and honestly makes one feel like that one opening cutscene section from Sonic CD where Sonic rushes down a mountain and ramps off it to land on the chain link to little planet, but it was most certainly not properly planned nor executed in Sonic Frontiers.
I am not sure why you included a mechanic like boost canceling in your review. It is not a vanilla feature or intended feature. It is a speed-running exploit. This is further backed by the fact that Sonic Team didn't even include a signifier for it being used by a player in time attack mode until one of the post update launches when they realized that people were using it to get faster times. So they then made an icon that would appear on time attack records to let a person know if the player used any speed-running exploits or not. I think the boost cancel is super fun to use but it's clumsy to consistently use because it was in no way an intended gameplay mechanic. This is like someone reviewing Super Smash Bros. Melee and talking about SHFFLing, Wavedashing, etc. One would only ever mention those if they are reviewing the game from a competitive gaming scene standpoint or talking about the speed-running community end of the game. At which point it's no longer a vanilla game review.
While generations most certainly has solid movement, I think both it, along with Frontiers suffer from the nature of a restricted camera was made for more linear gameplay. Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast (not the crappy DX version) still to this day has the most fluid movement of any 3D Sonic title. Even Sonic Adventure 2 struggles to match SA1 in that regards. While the camera in SA1 could be jank as well, it was much more tuned to follow the player in a smooth 360 degree rotation pattern than what later entries were willing to offer. Sonic 2006's camera isn't great either but not horrendous. Not sure about Sonic Heroes' though. I need to play that game again to see how it behaved. As for Frontiers' overall movement system, it does suffer from a fair amount of rough edges. Wall running is indeed buggy (no it's not just a skill issue on your end), homing attacks absolutely obliterate all momentum, boosting doesn't carry momentum into running, and the myriad of sliders that were added to have people D.I.Y. the game has been criticized as a problematic design choice.
Most people who are unfamiliar with Sonic will have ZERO idea what those sliders do, why they are there, and or why they should want to mess with them. Even as a Sonic franchise veteran I initially found the sliders clumsy to work with. No other Sonic game has had such a feature until now. And it seems like Sonic Team was trying to put a band-aid on the initial physics engine. That being said I am OKAY with the fact that they at least made an attempt to fix the physics or offer a solution to how the base game was handling physics when it came out. I just don't think this was the most ideal move however. Unfortunately a part of me gets the feeling that if they updated the physics engine post launch and tried to tweak the values something else permanently themselves, fans would have screamed endlessly that this or that feels off or wrong, so they probably figured "Fuck this we'll just give the player the option to decide how the game is supposed to feel" pretty much. Especially knowing how divided the Sonic fanbase is when it comes to physics and movement mechanics due to SEGA and Sonic Team's indecisiveness over the years.
There is plenty more in this video, but those are few points from the opening section I'll review. The only other thing I want to address is the way you're handling comments. Responding to toxic behavior with more toxic behavior is a horrible idea and just further perpetuates the insufferable discourse that has ravaged the Sonic community for well over 15 years at this point. If you find an immature comment, the best thing you can do is either encourage them to give mature response, ask them why they feel that way / felt the need to post it, break down their comment in analysis, or ignore and quarantine it. Anyways in terms of production quality and everything else the video is overall pretty solid so keep up the good work! :)

Hey man thanks for all the critiques on the video and sonic! Feedback is always welcome and everyone is entitled to an opinion. Like said in the video this was to get people who haven't tried the game yet to give it a chance if maybe the E3 trailer or anything else set them off. And while i know a large amount of fans still might dislike the game i personally find it very enjoyable even with it's major flaws. This wasn't meant to be a review video, more of a passion project, just me going over the highlights of my time playing. As for responding to comments, i'm pretty sure i've only responded to 1 negative comment and it was just a funny little jab at the guys YT handle, nothing serious. Most of the negative comments are just people saying they didn't like the game and i kinda just gloss over them because i don't really care. I apprecite you taking the time out of your day to express your concerns with the video and hope you stick around and watch me talk about other games I enjoy :) (EDIT: i replyed to like 3 comments all with playful remarks)

@@ActuallyParty No problem! I try to help offer advice wherever I think it might best fit / could be helpful. I guess it makes sense how the video was framed if you were trying to get more people to give the game a chance. But I think the titling could definitely be changed to something more welcoming and less polarizing. I think the audience that you are wanting to target with the project, those who might be on the fence about Frontiers or have a negative stance on the game, may be likely to avoid your video because of the title as many of those sorts of people will assume that you are being too biased towards the game. Not sure what others titles could work but maybe something like "The unexpected wins of Sonic Frontiers" or "Sonic Frontiers deserves another chance and here's why" maybe. Something that just sounds more vaguely inviting and not so overtly decisive. But of course those suggestions might not be the most clickbait worthy titles so it maybe won't net you as many viewers. But again I think it's worth improving the health of our media outlets over prioritizing numbers or success. Also, about the comments, I understand now why you responded the way you did. My only concern is that satire doesn't carry over the internet very well (and never has), so anyone who is just passing through at a quick glance will think your comments are 100% serious. I have seen this happen a lot online where something that was meant as a friendly joke or light hearted jab gets taken as a personal attack and people lose their minds over it. Just something to keep in mind for the future. Thank you for being super awesome and friendly! I'll definitely stick around and follow your channel to see it grow! :)

I think it’s aight, but I was expecting higher quality than “good enough”. This game does a lot right, but it does so much wrong that holds it back from greatness. Its not technically flawed, but it’s more of a core design philosophy issue.
The best aspects of the games are the controls and the music. Controls outside of Cyberspace feels great, and finally having the spindash and momentum finally makes the game feel as good as it should’ve. Music is consistently great with alot of variety. Good stuff
Everything else that’s “good” is “good*” as in its decent but has issues that can range from big to small. Combat is ok, my issue is the enemies are lackluster and not very engaging, not helped by the parry being as easy as it is. And the game wasn’t designed for a “perfect parry” system as shown in the DLC, which is more of a core design issue.
The open zone is fun to run around in, but I’d argue it’s empty and p boring otherwise. Aside from the automated rails and loops, there is only combat with enemies and that’s it. Nothing to really look for. Puzzles are unengaging and most of the time uninteresting. So combat and open zone are “good*” but have issues.
Cyberspace is good* but it’s reusing full on level design from other games 90% of the time. Like, I’m already annoyed at reused assets cuz we’ve seen these stage themes so often at this point, but the major issue is they double dipped and just ripped stages from better games. I’d argue it’s the worst part of the game personally.
Boss fights once again are with the combat, all style with little substance.
All the highs of this game are stylish and flashy, but it’s lacking substance imo. As a huge sonic fan, I don’t get the hype. Like, yeah, it’s better than the last decade of sonic (aside from mania) but that bar is so low, it’s not even impressive imo. The quality of this game is FINE but it should’ve been more imo. I could give it a begrudgingly low 7/10, but nothing higher than that.

Overhyped and undercooked, style > substance, but respect to those who really love the game, cuz there are aspects worth praising.

An update is still Downloadable Content which is what DLC stands for. If an update adds new content to a game then it is, by definition, downloadable content whether it is labeled that or not by the vendor. Party is correct for calling it DLC in this case. If the update was instead just maintenance patches then it wouldn't really be DLC but instead just strictly an update. All DLC are updates but not all updates are DLC. The Final Horizon update does happen to be DLC though.

The open world platforming is fun but later on it become so repetitive but that been fixed in update 3 so it's fine same with cyberspace.
A lot of potential this game has ashamed that sega always give sonic team almost 0 time to finish it i mean jut look sonic 06 and now p06.

I’m happy people like this game, but it’s not very good. It might be mid at best. It’s got an awful world design with directionless design. The fact that his friend said “it’s like they just put shit anywhere” or something like that is actually not a good thing. And having 2D sections in a 3D GAME is embarrassing. Sonic moves weirdly where if you trip on a stupid rock he flies like 20 feet away and jumping used to kill what little momentum this game had. The boss fights are a cool spectacle with little to no thought put in. Cyberspace stages are terrible with awful controls. The music is admittedly great with some of the best songs in the series, but the starfall island themes are kinda jarring when the edm and rock music fits much better. The story is bad and this is probably rogers worst performance with an out of place deep voice. Even eggman sounds bored. The spin dash is kinda fun not gonna lie so I’ll give the game that. But the final horizon is just plain awful. Amy the best one but her moveset makes no sense. Knuckles is meh. Tails has basically never had a good 3D transition and this game is probably tails at his worst. The final boss is ducking stupid and the trials are even worse. This game has good concepts but just terrible execution. I’m feel like the open world future is not gonna be kind to Sonic. He needs to go back to having adventure 1 movement with hub worlds and an actually engaging and fun level design. "and world 4 and 5 just reuse world 1 assets as they ran out of time to make the game."
This is not accurate. World 4 and 5 do not just reuse word 1 assets. They ARE world 1. Kronos was originally supposed to be Kronos, Rhea, and Ouranos, all combined together into a single island. That's why the island looked far bigger in the overseas beta previews that only got leaked like six or seven months ago. It's why Rhea is arbitrarily locked off from Kronos and why Ouranos is literally just Kronos and Rhea. If you run to the north side of Rhea you can weird cut-offs in the Island's geometry and if you pull off the infinite moon jump glitch in Kronos you will fly high enough out of bounds to where you will see an outline the ocean next to Kronos and Rhea that matches the exact shape of Ouranos. People have been working to restore the original Kronos Island as a result which I will link below. This also explains why Kronos is so much smaller than Ares and Chaos.

The combat in this game is awful, the game doesn't encourage me to do anything I could just spam the same moves over and over and over again with no engagement or challenge what so ever
if they wanted to make this combat aabout esperimenting with your combos then they should have made the combat about movement where you tie ovesm to sonic's movement the engagement there is NO direction I just hope they fix the combat for the next game

It would be better if you elaborated on why you think this game is a 6 out of 10 rather than just saying it is so and leaving it at that. I am not saying you are wrong for giving it that score, but it would be educational for others if they knew why you provided that score in particular. I too think Sonic Frontiers is a game that suffers from quite a few issues despite its improvements over the Sonic games of the previous decade, which is why I gave it a 7/10 (post all DLC being released). Before the DLC my score was hovering around 6.5 / 10 about two months after the game had initially launched. At first I was blown away by Frontiers, but that honey moon phase quickly wore off and about a month later the flaws started to really show through such as the terrible pop in, unresponsive controls in some segments, scripted events not always working properly, the bosses having a few too many QTEs that made the player into a movie go-er, etc.

    • @GameFreak164X

      Here's why it's a 6/10 for me:
It doesn't feel like a well conceptualized; placing random springs, rails, other sonic stuff, etc around some open plains feels lazy. It's like BOTW decided to place random hookshot targets all over the sudes of mountains instead of making it so Link can climb.
Sonic's physics lack the sheer exhilaration of the previous boost games while also not feeling as momentum based and fluid as the Adventure games. His controls just feel like the ghost of the boost formula.
The bosses are cool, but the DLC revealed how mechanically vapid they are.
The random stuff (besides platforming) you do around the world feels like a worse version of what BOTW offered.
The whole game really just reads as "Sonic, but open world" without much of a concept for making it fun beyond that.
I'm really not looking forward to this style being what Sonic is for the next however many years.

       @GameFreak164X
These are some of the most common critiques and rightfully so. You nailed it with this list.
"It doesn't feel like a well conceptualized"
This is one of Sonic Frontiers' biggest weaknesses. It had a good idea in mind. The concept was alright. But the execution of the concept is incredibly rough. I see Sonic Frontiers as a proof of concept more than anything else. I think the concept holds promise, but as you stated, the conceptualization of it here was just- not the greatest. Granted one could argue that both Sonic 1 and Sonic Adventure were rough first outings in their respective categories, but I think they each had enough vetted game design qualities to hold their own long term. I think in the next decade or so, Frontiers is going to have aged like milk. Similar to Sonic 1 and unlike Sonic Adventure which aged much better than its Genesis cousin.
"...placing random springs, rails, other sonic stuff, etc around some open plains feels lazy. It's like BOTW decided to place random hookshot targets all over the sudes of mountains instead of making it so Link can climb."
This is largely due to the development hell that the game suffered. Not making excuses here for the poor end result product. Rather explaining why it ended up this way. The open zone idea didn't really take form until part way through development when, in the summer of 2021, beta testers complained that the game had nothing "Sonic-y" in it. Apparently earlier builds of the game were just giant open fields and rolling hills with no boost pads, springs, bumpers, or any of the stuff you would normally find it a Sonic game. This is why the platforming elements aren't properly integrated into the environment but instead seemed to be slapped on top with horrible pop-in to boot. Notice how in other games such as Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Adventure 2, etc. the Sonic gameplay gimmicks and elements take on the environmental attributes of the stages they are set in whereas Frontiers fails to do this at every turn.
Instead of getting- say- rock arches as grind rails in Ares Island you get the same generic bland rails that you find on all the other islands. Whereas in Sonic Adventure 2, the gimmick of say- grind rails is contextualized within the environment. For city escape those rails are pedestrian hand rails. For green forest they are vines. For final chase they are cyber power lines. But in Frontiers all of the platforms, rails, bumpers, etc. are just generic objects that exist in their default context with no integration to their surrounding environment, thus making things INCREDIBLY jarring both visually and logically. I will also add that the layout of the objects is rather weird as well. It's like they realized that they need to add in something Sonic-esque at the last minute and decided to just throw in a ton of mini playgrounds that either function like a Sonic Colors 2D section or a Sonic Story Book Wii game roller coaster. Many people lamented getting forced into these 2D or roller coaster sections and having to break the game's mechanics to try and get out of them or else they'd be stuck in them unwillingly.
"Sonic's physics lack the sheer exhilaration of the previous boost games while also not feeling as momentum based and fluid as the Adventure games. His controls just feel like the ghost of the boost formula."
This sounds about right. The boost has been heavily neutered to where it doesn't give the same insane sense of speed that it did in Generations nor Unleashed and it doesn't have the smooth freedom of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. It never really committed properly to either formula nor did it refine the best parts of each formula for the end result. It is just sort of duct-taped together. This is why I think the spin dash, while a desirable addition, was a mistake. It doesn't feel like it was implemented with the proper care and attention primarily because the base game didn't take the time to implement adventure or boost gameplay into its system with proper care or intention. Sonic feels very choppy and stiff in Frontiers. Momentum doesn't carry, sometimes boosting over a pebble sends you flying, the camera gets locked on weird things, etc. Sonic GT is a perfect example of how momentum can greatly improve a 3D Sonic game. Someone even made a mod of Frontiers that implements true momentum into the game and it is like night and day. I'll link it below.
"The bosses are cool, but the DLC revealed how mechanically vapid they are."
They are style over substance and always have been. When I first played through them I was impressed. But I was impressed because of the cinematics. And once you see the cinematics once, they are no longer new and impressive. That's when you notice that for like 60% of the boss fights you're just doing QTE shit rather than actually fighting. And whatever combat IS there is just REALLY shallow. Which is more of a problem with the combat system itself than the design of the boss fights.
"The random stuff (besides platforming) you do around the world feels like a worse version of what BOTW offered."
It's pretty much if Breath of the Wild had no side quests other than collecting Korok seeds basically. I feel you a lot on this one. I remember people would just go play the fishing mini-game, farm all the in-game collectibles, and then just skip like 70% of the game's content. This is just bad game design. I went out of my way to collect all of the tokens, keys, etc. for a 101% run and I ended up with so much excess garbage. Tons of unused tokens, keys, etc. They definitely did not properly plan out the collectibles gameplay loop. That is without a doubt.
"The whole game really just reads as "Sonic, but open world" without much of a concept for making it fun beyond that.
I'm really not looking forward to this style being what Sonic is for the next however many years."
Well it really is just Sonic...but open world. It doesn't have much going for it outside of that. I think people liked the idea though of having an explorable hub world that you could access individual stages from. It's like an expansion of what SA1 did with Station Square and what Sonic 06 did with Soleanna. I can't say the idea is horrible but I can understand why you might not be too happy with this being the future template for Sonic. I think it could get better from here IF Sonic Team learns to reign in the scope creep, focus on making smaller detailed areas with tons to do rather than giant ass areas with nothing to do, and commit themselves to implementing a physics system that allows for true momentum which would really help both boost and adventure type gameplay shine through.

@@amzrosevcaYep, those are basically my feelings, just explained a lot better lol
It really is just "a step in the right direction" for Sonic. Which would be ok, if we didn't wait five years for it. It's easier to stomach "steps in the right direction" when they come once every year or two. Not when it takes half a decade tho.
When other franchises (Doom, Ratchet & Clank, Mario, etc) take that long to make a game, we usually get a bangar. It just pains that Sonic as a franchise seems to simply be cursed...

There are plenty of people who think that Sonic Frontiers is a good product that fixed a lot of the problems that Sonic was dealing with in the 2010s. People do have opinions after all. Whether their opinions are structurally sound or not is another story, but yes there are plenty of people out there who think the game is good or was a good move for the Sonic franchise. Just look at some of the market and press data for evidence. I will link the sources below. The game received a 7/10 from IGN and a 71% from OpenCritic. The user score for the game on MetaCritic is an 8.1 and the meta score matches the score of OpenCritic, giving the game a 71 rating. As of May 2023 according to game developer the game had sold 3.5 Million copies and who knows how many more had sold since the rest of the DLC waves dropped. It was also the fourth best selling game of its launch month when it released back in November 2022. Even as someone who has extensively criticized Sonic Frontiers, the game has been able to hold its own industry wise. It has a lot of severe flaws, yes. But it definitely managed to do enough things right to warrant some sort of market success. It is fine to voice disapproval for a product, but saying stuff like "Who tf thinks this game is good" is belittling and only just radicalizes more people as a result. This is basically how you get more knee-jerk reactionaries who then feel like any criticism of a Sonic game is a personal attack on them.
