another spot that recently got my attention was right above the 1-1 portal in Kronos. That plateau is supposed to be accessible via a black wall but it never lights up, so you can only get there with a spin dash. This particular climb wall has weird behavior. The game has climbing disabled when you start the game, and it's enabled after you clear 1-2 for the first time and open up the first Emerald. So you can climb up the wall, but you still can't reach the top due to the invisible wall.

The strangest area in a Sonic game I can think of is probably the secret area in Big’s version of Hot Shelter in Sonic Adventure. Unlike the other secret areas, it’s actually a somewhat complicated process to get there, and once you do get in it’s full of unfinished background geometry, and is still mostly pretty pointless. You don’t even need to go there for the A mission because you can find all the fish you’d need in the main room.

As an 06 modder, it's my job to find these places and make them super unique when I can! The oasises in Dusty Desert are one of my favorite places, and I like to include them in levels I've made for LoS. Another one I really like is the backside of the castle before the mach speed section in Kingdom Valley, as well as the unused cave FAR into the left cliff near the castle.
I could go on and on about little places like this in 06. Maybe I should do my own video on it lol

And the entirety of Kingdom Valley drips with intrigue and atmosphere. The environmental storytelling of the brutalist castle ruins, and all the out of reach geometry I wished I could traverse... it's almost soulslike, if that makes sense.

This one's not really obscure but, Grind Race in SA2:B. For some reason it captivated me when I was little, so empty yet so detailed. The same goes for a lot of SA2 levels actually. I couldn't reach stages like Security Hall, White Jungle and Sky Rail in single player, so playing them in 2-player made them feel so special. White Jungle may have helped form my love of rainy settings in video games.

Really enjoyed this video! It was a fun tour of places i recognize, but usually never stopped long to take it all in.
Here's a few areas that came to mind:
-The little ledge after the boss in Angel Island zone. You can make your way up there and stand next to Knuckles as he crosses his arms laughing at you.
-The top of the mountain in Ice Cap act 1. As Knuckles you can glide slowly up the slope to reach the top, and even fly out of bounds.
-The very top of Hidden Palace in Sonic 3. As Tails you have just enough energy to reach a high platform, and it contains each of the power up monitors.
-The small walkable areas in Toxic Caves from Sonic Spinball are a favorite of mine. It's nice to stand still or walk a little bit since you spend the majority of that game being bounced around.
-Behind the big waterfall in Sonic 3D Blast. Not much to this one, but it's a spot i've always liked. In the Genesis version the water will hide you completely, but on Saturn you will be able to see yourself through the water.
-The "Knuckles Lounge" as i call it, recently found in Origins Plus CD. Have Knuckles climb over the big wall in Palmtree Panic 1, then drop down to a Knuckles-exclusive area.

A lot of the Sonic analysis videos on youtube tend to focus exclusively on things like gameplay, characters, and story, all of which are the most important things in these games, but so much more goes into each and every game, and every part of it deserves to be analyzed and appreciated. One I was surprised to not see mentioned was in Sonic Unleashed. In the hub of Spagonia at night, if you stand by a lit window somewhere in the hub (I don't specifically remember where, I think it was on a small bridge?), and turn off the music, you can hear the whistle from the announcement trailer as well as running water, implying that someone is probably just taking a shower. If everything else in the game didn't already help that world feel lived in, that truly did it for me.

In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, there's a ton of little nooks in Angel Island Act 1 to hang around in and kill time. There's a waterfall by the lincoln log platforms that you can get to. I also liked the spots where the special stages were placed, as well as the first boss arena after Knuckles tries to collapse the bridge underneath you. If you time it right, you can avoid it by jumping or flying back over to the stage. Loved to do that a ton.

The Chaos Emerald Shrine (Master Emerald Pillar shrine) in Sonic Adventure 1's past area. I loved visiting that place in the game as a kid. As adult its very easy to visit that place using the Mod Loader's debug menu. I love how quiet and peaceful it is. Theres no music there just relaxing rushing water from the shrine's pools and the pretty colorful gem textures of the Chaos Emeralds resting on the stone pillars and the Master Emerald. Visiting that place in the game makes me wonder what it was like for the Chao and Chaos to live there. There is also a very strange hole in the altar/shrine's stone roof as well, its a very weird detail.

sa1 and unleashed as a whole fascinated me as a kid with how many little areas you could access that had little to no actual purpose. if i had to pick a favorite area though, mystic ruins as a whole was just so cozy, from the odd caves with the chao garden entrance and the spot with knuckles' digging upgrade, tails' workshop and that upper floor with a sealed off door that i always tried to find a way to enter to no avail, the waterfall in the center, the jungle as a whole with it's winding paths and streams going all over the place, Big's house, the small platform way down below the cliff where you access the raft that takes you to the egg carrier, the master emerald shrine, and even the collision-less room underneath the river that only exists for that cutscene in Tails' story where he takes off in the Tornado-2. I just spent a lot of time when I was younger exploring the hub worlds and trying to access these strange areas, and it lended these games to feeling so much bigger than they really were. Nowadays I can cover pretty much all of it in a matter of minutes, but it still brings back a sense of discovery from when I was younger and made these worlds feel so lived in.
Also appreciate how in those games literally every NPC had something to say even though you're basically never required to talk to most of them. Some even have their own small subplots that progress as you go through the main story and it's a shame you don't see them talked about much

I can't explain just how I feel looking at small, closed-off spots or rooms like the examples you showed in Heroes. They're like the opposite of a liminal space. Whereas a liminal space is defined by being an area that people SHOULD be, made eerie by the lack of people presently occupying it, these areas are places that it seems like people SHOULDN'T be, but that you can be. There's something about the feeling of just going to places like these on your own, especially in a singleplayer game, or empty multiplayer server. Like your own little secret club that only you know about. Even if it's a spot that a million people already know about, it's so far removed from the actual intended gameplay of the game that it feels isolated from everything else. Maybe it also reminds me of when I was a kid, exploring areas in games like these.
I've never had that kind of experience with any Sonic game, but the spots shown in this video give me the same sort of feeling I'm talking about, and calls to mind some examples from other games I played as a kid. Maybe I should make my own video like this, but I don't think anyone else remembers the game that gave me that feeling the most, so I don't know who would care. XD

the jungle in sonic adventure also cracked my mind. It had so many spots, specially the place where you go to sand ruins and the paths near it. Also near Big's hut and the hut itself, and the hidden spots inside the jungle and the water stream, it was so neat idk why.
There is also that place in mystic ruins where tails set off with tornado 2, that is hidden below the waterfall area. And also the place where tornado 1 sets off near tails' workshop, where you could view the ocean when standing on the landing strip.
In station square i liked the place where the trail of the train is, that glass tunnel which Zero passes through carrying Amy. Also there is that area where you fight Chaos 2 as Knuckles, which looks like a restaurant or something, idk.
In Egg Carrier outside area, you could transform the ship in different forms so there where some forms which as i remember you set it to a specific mode and then took the monorail from inside area to outside. When you did that you would have access to sky deck mode, and it seemed very off for me idk. In normal mode there was also a place where you could go behind the pool area (still ouside) and you could have a view of the back of the ship.
There was the egg carrier chao garden whch had a missile/ship fallen, and a base with an antenn on it which i always triedd to enter
Also in lost World there was that outside path which you could see very low quality pyramids from affar. There was the dark room as well
Alo the whole past village which Tikal takes us and the emerald altar are interesting
In Heroes, at the end of Ocean Palace there was a giant palace which you could explore, but generally everyone just run directly to the goal ring. It was a nice place to see very beautiful.
In Casino Park there was a Vip area you could access (i dont remember how though) and it was a pimball with some different colors.
In Hang Castle/Mystic Mansion, there was a lot of places, and I know they were supposed to be rather obscure lol. But that Spider Web area which you could grind was very (????). And also when you enter the well and falls in a black shiny liquid/substance and had a lot of pumpkin ghosts , that place is very thingy for me. There was also the cave inside Mystic Mansion where you also grind, it was very mysterious. And when you get on the top of the Mansion, near the goal ring, the view was very weird and beautiful

Bit of an obscure one, but I like a section of '90s Boulevard from Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, where, normally the racers will land on a ramp that transitions to riding on the side of a SEGA building. You can brake on the building, or use Super Sonic/The Crazy board to drain all the rings to stand still. I like seeing through the building.
14:01 Big can access that area as part of the story since he can't jump high. The box isn't present there, so he can walk to it. Funny thing is that, in the elevator, once it closes, Big's tail will clip through the elevator, so a voice clip plays where he says something like "Ouch", meaning that his tail got actually hurt by the elevator.
21:41 I'm really glad that they brought Metropolis back for Mario and Sonic 2020. You actually get to see a little more of the city plus the goal area. It's weird to actually see the place in a more peaceful and festive situation.

I really loved this video, even tho sadly it is a bit shorter than the last one talking about the architecture, it still is pretty good and it's totally ok for it to be a bit shorter
I really love the attention to detail in Sonic games, even if most of the time, if you're not a player like me, you'll never notice those things, I just love exploring those areas, watching, exploring and feeling them makes Sonic's World feels more alive and imersive instead of being just another game, and it shows the passion and care they had making the game
And yeah, I agree with most of those places, having such crazy and cozy rooms is so nice, having a small island to just chill watching the ocean like the small island really far away in Rhea Island in Sonic Frontiers or the one you shown on Seaside Hill in Heroes, having a small cave to chill watching a lake or a waterfall, etc. most of the times, even when you're an adult and you know there is probably no colision behind all those stuff, or out of your view the things are not completed or generated anymore and it's just a void with nothing (like behind the metal grates in the sewer in SA1 and Planet Wisp or the streets and alleyways in Rooftop Run), you still feel like it is a place that actually exists, it make those places feels more alive
13:55 also, that area behind that box is Big's path to get into Twinkle Park, in his campain, at the end of the hallway that door is an elevator that gets you into that glass hallway that is the entrance to Twinkle Park

13:25 - You are correct. There is a powerup (Jet Anklet) for Tails in this room.
Call this a happy coincidence if you want. I'am currently in a middle of my first full playthrough of Adventure (I've played it before but only on 100% save file downloaded from the internet, so it does't count). Yet I haven't realised it is possible to get up there with Tails until I've watched your video. I plan to go for 100% completion so, it helps me out a bit. Thanks

This sort of thing definitely applied to me in the Garden dome in Super Mario Galaxy. I was fascinated by how open it was, despite how you were only confined in a small area, especially since it was somehow located in a tiny dome. The fact that it didn’t use the normal dome music also made me feel a certain way.

Rhea Island in Frontiers, the Chao Gardens (SA2 especially), New City in '06 and the entirely of Rooftop Run for the Generations version are my favorites places mentioned that I wish I spent more time than usual just to enjoy.
Also, great video as always, Cifesk. Thanks for that!

Bro I been thinking thissss. The way I see it, I always seem to think of the humans behind the game. They were just designing a level with the simple technology they had at the time and never knew someone in the future would analyze it so much, and enjoy the little areas made without much intention. That's why I like imperfect older games.
This kinda reminds me of Mario 64, it's like a room. Probably because it is. A room with pictures made to disguise itself as the sky, buildings, etc. A sky box.
I just love seeing the human behind old games

14:02 Big goes in there. Iirc you lift the box as him.
Also I think I remember glitching Knuckles in there too lol
SA1's Twinkle Park have a bunch of cool details, I loved exploring with Sonic's Spin Dash Jump! I've seem footage that if you manage to glitch there with Knuckles, a wierd red fog covers de entire stage, pretty creepy and I with I could do it myself!
Having Debug Mode or Free Camera is super cool, but as a kid, managing to do it yourself with pure skill just felt awesome, like you're breaking the game with your own actions xDD
I used to clip through walls and ground with the burger man, and enter stages with characters you were not supposed to enter with, Tails in Emerald Beach is a good example, and the fact that the stage was "slightly" different was cool in a way.
With Gamma, you can actually go under Mystic Ruins train area, and find a "string of blocks" that... honestly served no purpose, I loved standing there... in the void, listening to Mystic Ruin's theme. Also really liked the Forest Area too!
I'mma stop right here cuz, I just have so many memories with SA1! (I do love SA2 more tho! But for the glitches and exploration? SA1 was the coolest!)

Hey, awesome video! I loved the spots you picked. I played Sonic Heroes a lot as a kid, but if I were to make a video on the game, I don't think I would have remembered that little room you showed off first. Amazing find.
I LOVE the past version of the Mystic Ruins temple from Sonic Adventure. You could only see that place once or twice I think, yet in spite of that, it always stuck out in my mind as a cool place to be. You could go to the objective and leave in a second or so, but you didn't have to. You could just walk around and explore the whole space.
Also, just as I stumbled across this, I happen to be working on a tour for another Sonic game. I'm definitely in a Sonic mood these days, and I really liked your perspective.

In the Dreamcast version of SA2, the Dark Chao Garden has a big mountain with a cave underneath, and inside that cave there was a big ornate cauldron with bones in it and discarded skulls around it. I love the aesthetic, but they removed it in all of the ports, making the Dark Chao Garden weirdly flat. I think they removed it because it implied that the Dark Chao are predatory, and would hunt us for a meal. But that's the exact creepy-cute vibe I love about them, so it's still canon to me. 😈

The places that come to mind to me are:
    - Any of the Chao locations in Sonic Adventure 2
    - On Final Rush, there's a platform with a life on it that is not only a little hard to reach, but also hard to notice due to being way off screen unless you see it in the distance when you are earlier in the level. I only realised the platform existed when I watched a Score-Attack run of the level. The platform is near one of the golden beetle spawns in either regular or hard mode, can't remember.
    - Sonic Heroes, on the flip side of you liking Chaotix locations as team Sonic/Rose/Dark, there was one part in the spooky mansion (Act 2) which is used by Sonic, Dark and maybe Rose, but only sort of used by Chaotix. Its that area where you sling yourself between many tornado poles just before your have the segment where you run down the wall. Normally you're on a big circle platform and there's a tornado pole there, but as Chaotix the initial pole is removed, but the rest of them dangling over the void are present. As a kid I got stuck on this level as Chaotix, so I tried looking all over and eventually I wanted to see if I could launch myself over to the poles and tornado them. After many attempts of boosting as Espio, I eventually connected with the pole and it flung me to the next pole. I'm not sure what happened, but the next pole didn't work and I fell to my death. Maybe it had no collision, or maybe I needed to manually tornado it while in the air, dunno. But that area has stood out to me for that reason.
    - The Dreamcast version of the Sonic Adventure 2 chao gardens. I played gamecube growing up and was not aware the Dark/Hero gardens were majorly redesigned and imo far better than the non-Dreamcast versions.

Another amazing video Cifesk. I'm a bit late, but one obscure section in a Sonic game I had a strange interest in, is this one section in Sonic Generations Rooftop Run Act 2. After the grind rails on the lower path you can use some balloons to take you to a roof with an extra life. Something about it gives off a calm vibe.

The area behind the box in the sewers that Sonic can't get to is there because that's how you enter Twinkle Park in Big's campaign. The area in the sewers behind Twinkle Park in that room above them is where Tails unlocks the Jet Anklets.
