Been getting some comments about it, so I'll say it
I fumbled the Unleashed coverage, besides that NPC mission stuff I point out, I had no idea the "LVL" missions are from the Hot Dog stand and that they *actually* level up after you do them. Sorry about that!

No, the friends aren’t always in the same levels as you save them.
Tails helps in Chemical Plant, Rouge helps in Seaside Hill, Cream & Cheese helps in City Escape, and Vector helps in Crisis City.
It’s more accurate to say you have missions where they either help or fight you. And every single one has one of those missions in the level you saved them in.

  • @J.R.Unbound
    @J.R.Unbound 5 месяцев назад +2

Sonic Rush Adventure, weirdly enough, has all free of these game modes. The game has 100 missions (though mission 100 is just a reward for beating the others) that are quite simple (collect 100 rings, beat a stage under a time limit, beat the hard version of this boss, do a 12 trick combo etc) and are most akin to Sonic Adventure DX's missions imo, but I like them more here because Rush Adventure is a portable game that kinda caters to this style of gameplay more. Also, 7 of these missions are mandatory for the true ending because that's how you get the Sol Emeralds.
The multiplayer component is the same as the original Rush’s, where you race against another player (one player being Sonic, the other being Blaze). Nothing really to talk about here, except for the fact that Sonic is factually better because of how fast he is. It’s not nearly as bad as Silver stopping an opponent for the entire stage, but unless it’s a more vertical stage or the Blaze player is more experienced, Sonic’ll win.
The game is also somewhat infamous for its vehicle segments. You move left or right with the stylus to dodge obstacles or boost through them with the Jetski, where you can also race Johnny the robot to win Chaos Emeralds required for the true ending (that are almost impossible without grinding for upgrades), there’s a sailboat that has you tap the screen to shoot different projectiles and survive until you hit the goal, there’s a submarine that’s a… rhythm game that is actually pretty good?

5:38 To be fair, this made the game very valuable back in the game's release in the Gamecube, or even PC for those who aren't familiar with emulation.
19:59 Now that I think about it, Forces technically brought this one back as "SOS Missions".
20:29 Aside from completionists like me (sometimes), you can probably include PC players who want to experience playing as the console-exclusive characters through extremely limited modding.
21:32 Unlike the first two Riders games, Free Riders incorporates the "missions" as part of the story but it has some game modes, especially for multiplayer.
24:45 Well, the original SA2 also had multiplayer but very limited.
33:08 Btw, additional explanation for Race Stage. When you have the Emerald, your air depletes very quickly even when not doing anything, so you have to keep going as far as possible. However, if you don't have the Emerald, your air is almost impossible to deplete (I say "almost" because you can hold the jump button and keep pressing the boost button which will allow you to instantly execute as many boosts as possible) so you can catch up quickly.
33:56 Keeping the egg away from disappearing (like running out of air) will eventually grant you a buff that will last for the entire match if it hatches.
34:03 In addition, unlike the regular races, staying in the PIT doesn't make you invincible, so you're very vulnerable when refilling.
49:20 The Sega crossover racing games have arena-type of game modes.
52:02 Btw, the original Wii version allows you to play as your Mii on the Sonic Sim. Additionally, Ultimate technically adds the Metal Sonic rival races even if it's functionally a time trial since you can't even interact with Metal.
As for other games that I remember, there's:
-Sonic Superstars with the robot stuff for multiplayer.
-Sonic Generations has the Casino Night DLC pinball minigame. Also, the console versions has Sonic 1 as playable IIRC.
-Additionally, there's an Online Mode, which has Ranking Attack (leaderboards essentially) and 30 Second Trial (how far can you go in 30 seconds).
-Sonic Generations 3DS had Versus Mode, Missions and Time Attack.
-Sonic Battle has minigames for multiplayer only.

Sonic Origins' missions had some of the weirdest difficulty curves I'd ever seen, with most being ridiculously easy with some of the most lenient S rank times, and then it throws something so brutal that merely being able to finish it feels like an automatic S rank. (looking at you, those two Knuckles obstacle course missions, and that one Tails balloon popping mission) Shame it got lazy and didn't add any Amy missions (or Knuckles in CD) in Origins Plus though.

I remember Sonic Riders taking up so much of my time, as you mentioned, just to only do it so I could Unlock Super Sonic. Though I have beaten all the missions, completing is such a chore that I have yet to touch it again.

  • @Dark_0verlord

I'd like to give my two cents on the modes in this video I have played (really long comment incoming).
Sonic Adventure DX Mission Mode: I actually like this one a lot. I adore the concept of being given riddles that allude to a secret location in a level, encouraging both puzzle solving and exploration. Admittedly, not all missions are created equally, since some are incredibly simple and easy, and Missions 53 and 54 are quite bad (it's actually easier to beat Mission 53 using a glitch over the intended method). I'd love to see something similar to this return in a future Sonic game.
Sonic Heroes Extra Missions: Being the #1 Sonic Heroes fan, of course I'm gonna like these.
Team Sonic's extra missions are the worst since the time limit is very rarely an issue, so it's basically just another normal playthrough.
Team Dark's extra missions are easily my favourite, but considering that I am quite familiar with the level layouts and enemy locations, that isn't much of a surprise. I just really enjoy speeding my way through the levels, annihilating every enemy that comes my way, and since time is the only value that matters for the ranks, it makes the experience much more focused since I can form the fastest route that grants the most enemy destruction.
Team Rose's extra missions are fun since they are basically Team Dark's extra missions but with the focus being on rings instead of enemies. It's fun forming the ideal routes that give the most rings in the least amount of time.
Team Chaotix's extra missions are very cool, especially since they often let you see new areas of the stages you normally wouldn't go to (which is great since Team Chaotix has the most unique object layouts of any team).
If I were to rank the extra mission types from best to worst, I would rank them as such: Team Dark > Team Chaotix > Team Rose > Team Sonic.
Sonic Riders Mission Mode: Once you get over the game's incredibly steep learning curve, these missions can be fun. Some are better than others though. My favourites would be the grinding missions and the flying missions. Seeing new angles of levels and exploration are things I love in Sonic games, and these mission types definitely scratch that itch. The junk collecting missions are cool too. Not much to say about this mode other than "I like it".
Sonic Generations Mission Mode: These are quite good, and there is some nice variety between them. Not all of them are winners, but most of them are enjoyable enough. I agree that the doppelganger races are extremely easy though.
Sonic Adventure 2 Multiplayer: I didn't really play much of this one, but it's cool. The speed races are easily the best, but the treasure hunting ones are fun too. I didn't really care much for the mech levels, and the kart race can get repetitive. Being able to play as new characters is probably the best part of this mode.
Sonic Heroes Multiplayer: I will preface this section by noting that the multiplayer modes in this game actually run at half the frame rate of the main game, which is likely a part of the reason why the modes feel a bit harder to play.
I enjoy all 3 race modes (Action, Quick, and Expert) quite a bit since they all offer different experiences. One is short and sweet, one is substantial and rather long, and the other is a nice middle ground. There are actually a lot of ring boxes hidden throughout the Action and Expert Races, and they can be used to quickly build up Team Blast to screw over your opponent.
Battle Mode is definitely among the worst of the bunch, though the Team battles were already scuffed so it's no wonder the Battle Mode is as well. It at least can offer some quick and chaotic fun, so it's not all bad.
Since I play on the PC version, the Special Stages are much more manageable in the control department, but this mode still is rather boring and probably the worst mode overall.
Ring Race is strange. Egg Treat (the Egg Hawk one) is cool, Hot Elevator is alright, if a bit boring, and the pinball one is nasty, not because of the pinball controls, but because of the slot machines. It's literally gambling. The quality in this mode is quite varied.
Bobsled Race is cool. One of the best modes for sure. Collecting rings actually makes the bobsled go faster, so there is an incentive to collect rings during the races.
Sonic Riders Multiplayer: The mode where you have to stay close to another player is pretty good and it encourages teamwork, coordination, and cooperation. The Survival race is alright, but it's definitely the weakest of the three modes. The Battle mode is the most fun one to me. Scouring the level to find upgrades, dodging the level gimmicks, and trying to catch your opponents off guard is a fun game loop.
Sonic and the Secret Rings Multiplayer: I only played the minigames from the library. I never bothered to play any of the actual modes. Due to the forced motion controls, I found many of the minigames hard to play so I didn't enjoy it that much, but I appreciate the effort that went into this mode since it is quite fleshed out (a shame that some of that effort didn't go towards making the main game better).
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 Chao Garden: I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I'm not that big of a fan of the Chao Garden. Sure, raising a little guy is cute, but these modes can be very tedious for people who want to 100% the game. Having to grind for rings to buy stuff and animals/chaos drives to level up the Chao gets old fast. I assume that the intended method was to visit the Chao Garden every time you finish a level, but that just destroys the pace of the game, so it's a lose-lose situation. The races and battles themselves are also very boring to watch. I see the appeal of these modes, but they definitely are not for me.
Sonic Heroes Super Hard Mode: What's your reward for getting every A rank across 8 total playthroughs of the game? Another playthrough. Most would shudder at the thought, but I welcome the challenge. Since the Super Hard Mode levels do not have ranks, you can solely focus on getting to the end as fast as possible. The changes made to the levels can be pleasant surprises, such as the rail boosters making you go crazy fast, or visiting the spider web room in Mystic Mansion. My only problem is that you can't replay these levels without restarting the mode from the beginning.
Shadow the Hedgehog Expert Mode: It's basically Super Hard Mode 2. I enjoy this one less since there are a lot more stages, so the mode ends up dragging towards the end, but it's still a fun time.
Sonic Colours Sonic Simulator: They're average. I remember enjoying them, but that's basically it. Not much to say about this one. Some of the levels being based on Sonic 1 was cool though.
and here's an extra mode you probably didn't know about...
Sonic Generations 3DS Mission Mode: Unlike the HD version, the 3DS version's missions are completely optional. There are 100 in total, and beating them unlocks bonus stuff like character models, music, and artwork. Also they are bought using Play Coins, so get ready to do a lot of walking. There are various types of missions, and they vary in quality. Some of the missions actually have you refight the bosses which is a cool addition. Overall, I'd say it's a little worse than the HD version's mission mode, but it's still a fun experience.

Usually love your videos, but this one is a miss for me. Editing and presentation is great (as always) but why have you not completed so many of these mission types? Seems to me that you ought to have waited on this topic until you did that. For instance, I would have thought it worth mentioning how the "streets" area of '06 only shows up in missions. Or how Shadow has way more than the others for some odd reason. The unleashed side missions can often get pretty involved (like the Spagonia family mission, which has several parts). And what about Gens? Thats a really short game. It doesn't take that long to complete all the missions. Yes, most people haven't done it, but most people don't make hour long, in-depth videos about Sonic either. 15 minutes in and I'm wondering why I should keep watching when it seems like you don't care much more about this topic than the "5% of people on steam" who didn't give a shit about these modes either. Keep in mind, I'm in the minority of people who have played all the missions, so I do actually find them enjoyable.
