- Tim Curry and the cast of the 1982 Drury Lane production of 'The Pirates Of Penzance' perform 'I Am The Pirate King' during the Royal Variety Performance.
Someone watched this and thought, "Let's add some muppets"
First of all: Yes.
Second of all: That's true of every scene of any work of musical theatre ever.
Third of all: And it's *always* a good idea to add Muppets.
Tim Curry is an absolute phonomenon! His voice is astonishing, he's drop dead gorgeous and a huge stage presence. Not many have all of his talents. He's just amazing to watch!
I was devastated when he had that massive stroke. Such an intelligent, vibrant, talented, and versatile actor, singer, and dancer to have to suffer this was incomprehensible to me. We just never know what life will deal to us. But I'm so grateful for all the shows and movies he left us with to watch and remember. I hope somehow he can get better with each day and know that he is still greatly loved by the world.
May he feel better somehow
@@miriamgreen3973 OHHHHH you need to check out some of the Con Meet and Greet videos on RUclips from the last couple of weeks. Aside from still being wheelchair bound his facial paralysis is almost entirely gone! Sense of humor, mental faculties and everything else we love about him is SO still in play. 💕💕💕
He is, all of that. Ive watched this video, well lost count.
He’s phenomenal ❤️
THIS is what charisma looks like and it can NOT be taught. He’s the gold standard. Period.
Have you seen the 1994 film with jon english
It's almost painful to see Tim in his prime like this and see what that stroke robbed us of. Damn, a world without a Tim Curry laugh or smile is a poorer one, that's for sure.
You better hold onto yourself because one of these years Tim Curry really will die and when that happens I'm pretty sure we're all going to Brake!
Mr. Curry is a treasured artist and man, we all slow down and face challenges in life. He once again shows what a man he is today with poise and determination! I salute you Dr.
He still has his wit and humor. With that we are blessed still.
Tim's speech is almost restored as of Sept. 2021. He has done a lot of work to gain his voice back and movement. Strokes are a tricky business, but the brain is so amazing at repair work!!!
and a world thats more saddened by what he is now than happy for what he was and gave is one he would not be proud of..
Whether he's doing rock and roll or light opera, when Tim Curry has a song, he really sinks his teeth into it.
He is great no doubt but this can't be classed as light opera. It's been reorchestrated and they are singing with microphones. It was written to be performed with a large orchestra (with only acoustic instruments) and no amplification. This version is essentially musical theatre.
@@multitrackjake8698 There was a time, not terribly long ago when musical theatre was performed without amplification. Some of us are still around who miss it.
@@kennethwayne6857 I hear you! I don't mind amplification in repertoire that requires it. The emergence of the big band musical in the 1960s was when it became necessary. Gilbert and Sullivan is opera though so I dislike it being amplified.

Very true.
Pirates: "I didn't know we had a king. I thought we were an autonomous collective."
Eyyyy
lol
Ahahaha
No you've got it all wrong we're living in a dictatorship!
I DIDN’T VOTE FOR HIM!
He truly is a professional pirate
I see what you did there.
When they picked him up, my brain automatically heard "Upstage, lads, this is my only number."
From a mad transvestite to a pirate king. That is show biz.
HAHAHA!!!! Well put!
He was magnificent.
He also played a satan in _Legend_
@sha11235 - Tim Curry was BORN to wear a corset!
No, that is art.👏😜
"I was the pirate who held Tim Currys ass" Damn he's so lucky!!
@Julian Shapiro Oh, I wish! I don't know him... Well apart from my in fanfics :D
😂🤣🤣
Add Ass Wranger to my CV
This man's range as an actor is just wild. There aren't many people as talented as him, that for sure.
Right on. Agreed!
2:53 You know Tim is awesome when he straight-up steals the man's baton.
Yeah, that was great.
I hope he got it back! I'm rather attached to my batons!
oh, Tim could steal my baton anyday.... ;)
That was originally done as improvisation in the 1980 Shakespeare festival production with Kevin Kline when he fought the maestro and stole his baton
his legs in those pants are amazing
Such a terrible shame that he's wheelchair bound now. What an amazing talent
Old age is a motherfucker
@@kongfeet81 It won't be for long. Sooner or later, there will be cures to make sure nobody becomes wheelchair bound. The Peter Pan Potion will be no exception. Tim Curry will revert back to walking again.
@@kongfeet81 It wasn't just old age - he had a massive stroke
@@reneastle8447 Could you send me a source for this?
We've been trying to find a cure for 16 years, but we're not even close. If you have a source I would be grateful, even more grateful if the source explained the science behind it, so we can make further work on it. Unfortunately my team hasn't found a way to even fully revive dead nerves, so your sources could help a lot.
@@FriendlyHomie I'll have to make appointments to scientists, doctors and chemists of the idea. I'm not gonna do it alone. I'll need all the help I can get.
I actually got to see Tim Curry in this production in London in the early 80's. Such a treat to see this video! I remember how wonderful he was on stage. He stole the show!
Tim doesn't steal the show. Tim *is* the show
Between Tim Curry and Kevin Kline's performances, being able to steal the show is something of a requirement to pull off that role
omg you're so lucky!
I mean, a pirate king should steal on a grand scale.
A living legend. He's good in EVERYTHING he's done.
To quote Nostalgia Critic: "For all the one-star movies he's been in, he's the reason it got that one star."
SWOON, what a hot man he was!
I saw this production in July of 82. I was visiting London and was lucky enough to have my cousin take me to see this. I was 19, fresh off the Canadian farm and this was my very first theater experience. Never has there ever been a better pirate king that Tim Curry. Love ya forever. :)
How he hasn't been knighted yet I'll never know!
#knightcurrynow
He must be
He pays taxes...and he also doesn't harass people...
Harry Kane got knighted for.. Nothing. This amazing artist has never even been considered. I think it's safe to say, being knighted means nothing now.
Sir Tim Curry does have a good ring to it.
Dang!!! those boots work for him, lol
I agree 100%%! He is so hot and I love him!!
It ALL works for him!!!!.....which in turn is really working for me!😉
Not just the boots
Almost as much as the corset in Rocky Horror 😁
Lordy lord, but the way he was bouncing around, you'd thing Tim didn't way more than a feather. Impressive!
Plus his sheer stage presence made him seem so SO SO tall, but those who *know him to be well under six foot are captivated none the less.
Trust Tim to bring us the campest Pirate King ever!
OH MY! You have no idea how happy this makes me! I saw this production at the Drury Lane Theater in June of 1982 in London and was floored! I love Tim Curry and we had no idea he was in it until we got there and he came on stage! Thank you so much for posting this!
I saw it as well while on a school trip in 1982, George Cole, Tim Curry and Alistair McCoy were the actors I remembered most, it was my first ever theater experience and I loved it.
Drury Lane is real?
Yes, it’s just near by Covent Garden. You’ll know it when you get to the muffin shops.
I also saw this production in May 1982, with Prince Phillip and Princess Anne attending. Tim Curry was amazing!
@@eggmannega6895 Where else would any self respecting Muffin Man live? ;)
tim is beautiful
Upstage lads! This is my ONLY num-BER!
I’m in love with this man.
Me too
He’s such an amazing actor and person. It breaks my heart seeing him move around so easily here but he’s getting stronger and thank the lord he can still talk. He’s one of my idols ❤️
He is getting stronger daily. I am SO happy about that, but yes he surely is!
Tim Curry is one of those rare birds who excel at all forms of visual arts: Theatre, movies, television. His body of work proves his enormous talent.
I wish there was a recording of the full show. I imagine his "with cat- like tread" is legendary.
That is one pretty man!!! And he's got a gorgeous voice. I wish I'd seen this production!
As a child, I saw this production in Drury Lane twice. It was BRILLIANT. I was so excited because the pirates came into the audience and one of them spoke to me!! He told me not to tell anyone they were there. Never forgot it and never will. Tim Curry, was and is a LEGEND. The actor playing Frederick, was none other than Michael Praed (Dynasty and Robin Hood fame) who you can see in this clip as well. Incredible memories of this, just wonderful. This is a production I would dearly LOVE to see again!!
I went to see this in London 4 times before I convinced a friend to come along and she loved it too. Tim can hold an audience just by being on stage
I wish we had the complete show with Tim in it recorded.
BRAVO! I love Tim Curry. His voice is magnificent. He is the quintessential Pirate KING!
See John English's Pirate KIng. Also very good.
@@mumi009 Thank you. I'll check it out.
I’m partial to Kevin Kline’s performance.
He would have been an amazing lion in a Wizard of Oz remake! That voice here reminds me how that actor portrayed the character.
I love this man. Great voice, beautiful, playful and so sexy.
My 18th birthday present, tickets to Pirates. An unforgettable experience Tim Curry was sublime.
Good for you sweetie!!!
I’m much older than you. I am a 60 year old retired Navy veteran nurse.
I was born and raised in New York City (1964-1985)
In 1980, my sophomore year in high school
Several close friends and I decided to go see this movie called “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”
It played in what is called the 8th Street Playhouse on Mark plaza in Greenwich Village in the lower East Side of Manhattan.
(New Yorkers simply refer to it as “The Village”
And that’s when I discovered the amazing, remarkable man named Tim Curry!
I loved and still do love the arts
Music, dancing, acting, singing, Broadway showtunes -
The whole nine yards
It’s nice to see a young person who appreciates artistry and the beauty in it
God bless you ❤
Bless you my dear. My 18th was in 1982, I’m actually 60 next week. Some performances stay with you forever. Tim Curry in Pirates, Yul Brynner in the King and I, Sir Ian McKellern as Richard III. Theatre was a huge part of my life, and I’ve been the luckiest girl in the world to have experienced the finest that London theatres can offer.
His vocal range gives me the chills! Damn, Curry! You win!
I watched the Royal Variety in 1982 just to see Tim, but turned on a bit late and missed him. We didn't have a VCR, so that was that. So pleased to see it, 34 years later!
God he’s hot as a pirate
Oh my word he's just so handsome
He possessed all the qualities of the old movie stars. He could act (in any role) he could sing (any genre) and he was a good dancer. His stroke saddened me, such a fine talented man and so handsome to be sitting in a wheelchair now wasting away. I hope he knows how much he is still loved.

♪ 'Cause when you're a professional pirate ♪
Tim Curry is a professional pirate.
Same orchestration and structure as Kevin Kline's version, but with that patented Tim Curry craziness as an added bonus. I like it! It's much more dynamic than sticking to the old operetta style of some versions.
Its like Coke and Pepsi. The taste is similar, yet each are different enough to make them their own thing.
Much prefer Kevin
Tim Curry can out-bless Brian Blessed any day, and twice on Sundays.
This just adds to his role of Long John Silver in Muppets Treasure Island.
Jesus, he was a handsome man.
Billy D. Bunny was?!? He still is 😍
Gods, this man is gorgeous. Absolute legend.
Manly if he wanted to be, flamboyant and at least somewhat feminine in the role of Frankie... The voice of a god and the grin of a demon. Love this guy ☠💋
Oh, gods, such a studmuffin! The look, the voice, his sheer Presence....Tim Curry is such a remarkable man with so much talent; what the stroke did to him was such a horrible blow, but he's still got the heart and drive he's always had. Goddess Bless and watch over him ❤️🙏
That swagger at the end.
He's so damn hot
At like 3:47 "BOX!" so he gets one pushed onstage for his next scene...too cute and funny. LOVE LOVE LOVE me some Tim Curry! ❤❤❤❤
You had me at Tim Curry
It is so wonderful to see Tim here in his prime. God bless him. A man of amazing talents.
Fan-girling so hard right now. I love this play and I love Tim Curry!
Tim Curry as a pirate is aesthetic. Tallying it up now it appears that he has been a pirate on three occasions, one being this, and the others being his roles in Muppet Treasure Island and the other being Pirates of the Plain. In my heart, it seems Tim Curry always plays a pirate though so the math does not add up between reality and my imagination. Tim Curry exudes pirate energy.
He Also Voiced Pirate Captain James Hook in 1990's Fox's Peter Pan & The Pirates Cartoon Show.
i never want kids but id so have Tim's baby
Elin Lloyd Me too, me too..I can completely agree.
someone needs to produce some soon, I would if he would of let me ( I may be fixed but I'm sure he hold the power to fix that and produce offspring lol )
Why don't you want kids?
Absolutely! Honestly I'm amazed the video itself doesn't impregnate anyone who watches it
@@justynjonn i know have a 18 months year old daughter never thought id have a child x
Bravo. magnificent voice. and hot as hell too
I am ashamed of myself. I loved Tim in “that odd movie” from the mid 70’s and had no clue what an amazing talent he possessed in SO MANY areas of media!! A magnificent voice, speaking as well as singing and that “R” roll-good heavens!!
And I couldn’t stop this thought from entering my head. Imagine what a phenomenal performance had Tim and Freddie collaborated!! It would have been a once-in-a-century shindig! I can’t help but believe they would both have made musical history! Ah, an opportunity there and gone.
Tim, thank you so very much for sharing yourself with the world and thanks to all who shared the performances here on RUclips.
Tim Curry was born to perform. Thank God he has gifted us with such a fabulous body of work.
Love you forever Tim! 💕
God, no matter WHAT this guy does he is Mesmerizing. You just can’t take your eyes off him!
I think he is the most talented man who has ever walked this earth, i want to thank him from the bottom of my heart for all the enterrainment he has given us. LORD BLESS HIM. It would have been great to see him on stage like he is in this clip.
Brilliant, bold Tim Curry! A superb all round entertainer, class, charismatic and an absolute treasure.
This was a fantastic production and the video footage isn't a patch on watching Tim do this live. He was sensational, matched by Michael Praed as Frederick, Pamela Stephenson as Mabel and George Cole the Major General.
A pirate king with a pirate cadenza, he’s such a star ❤
Just a superlative performance..... such a fine voice, impeccable tuning but with all the dramatic licence required of the character. Tim Curry is a treasure of our time!
He looks absolutely gorgeous at 0:45
Tim curry is so versatile he can do and sing anything he is majestic
Interesting how Captain Blood (Errol Flynn) set the look for the "heroic pirate" for decades--"The Princess Bride," "Cutthroat Island," this and the Kevin Kline version of "Pirates of Penzance;" all the lead pirates had to look like Errol Flynn, with the white blouse and short ponytail (unless the pirate was the villain, in which case he looked like Captain Hook)...and then Jacksparrow completely changed it up, so now all the pirates have guy-liner and rock-star looks (Hook from "Once Upon a Time" and Eddie Izzard in "Treasure Island.") Both looks are great for a pirate; it's just something I find interesting.
Captain Blood and Treasure Island will still be more timeless for pirates then the "rock star" thing and whatever that stays true in the swashbuckling genre until an bigger thing come along then it will changes again.
I often think about that, too. For ages the stereotypical pirate was Long John Silver or Captain Hook. Now Purates look like Jack Sparrow. It is interesting to see how media influences this pictures.
@@Ilma1984 Actually if you're going for a more realistic pirate look, the character Barbosa is probably closer to the real thing.
Even more interesting because the descriptions of Capt. Blood's clothes in the book sound very much like what we see when we think of Capt. Hook. Captain Blood is a bit like Percy Blakeney when it comes to clothes.
In America many of our founders were Legit pirates from what I’ve read but don’t quote me
I love how he commands the stage in everthing he does.
hands down still my favourite Pirate King. Curry sings this role like perfection. what i wouldn't give to have been able to see him in this role in the play's entirety
I love this so much!!!!
Big booming voice !!!
I love Tim so much
i am a huge fan of Tim, I loved everything this man has been in. I personally hate clowns, but Tim Curry for me will be the one and only Pennywise. .. He a treasure that for sure and I had a huge crush on him when I was younger.. :)
Tim puts everything into his characters and that's what makes him so special
Tim Curry, a consummate performer, in everything he did! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
He looks like he is having so much fun
he sings very well!
You know how much I'd pay to see him do "With Catlike Tread"? All the money.
I fucking needed this. I'm crying inside with happiness.
T.C. is a total badass.
He is a pirate King , alright . Tim Curry"s rules , hell yeah ! he is a winner .
When I was in highschool my mom and I vacationed in England to visit a friend and saw Tim Curry as the Pirate King at the Drury Lane Theatre. I think it was 1982. Michael Praed was Frderick. It was awesome. I have lkved Tim Curry since then.
Tim's mother was there watching him perform, it was the Queen mother's birthday and he was the one presenting the cake to her, his mum kept waving and caught his attention and he dropped the cake
Probably why he hasn't been knighted lol.
I've heard that story and it's very funny in my perspective.
It is a bit over the top when you're Brittish and always looking up to Royalty.
Tim Curry: The "Professional Pirate" King :)
i was definitely born to late
Curry - brilliant performer !!!
The best Pirate King i have ever heard!! Mr. Curry makes special everything he touches. HURRAYY!!
Brilliant voice in this great actor.
Oh wow! This is my all-time favorite role Kevin Kline ever played and Kevin Kline is still my favorite Pirate King, but Tim Curry is stellar in this piece and I wish there'd been a full production with him! Although this song perhaps ought to be transposed up a tiny bit for him, and also he deserves an audience that isn't so proper they miss laughing at all the jokes XD
Does Tim yell 'HOOPLA' at 1:10 ? LOL... if you know ... you know ;)
Him AND Kevin Kline - awesome
Tim Curry, Pamela Stephenson, George Cole, Oliver Tobias - amazing cast
Tim Curry... GREAT ARTIST, GREAT VOICE. GREAT TALENT!
Such a wonderful actor and talented singer! My favorite role is that doctor on the Russian submarine in Hunt for Red October. It’s a secondary role, but he really made it memorable. Anything he does you can’t take your eyes off him.
Is there anything this man is not brilliant doing! ❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
How bloody glorious is he
The most animated performer of the late 20th century this man was a gift from God... it was a sad day when he had his stroke and is now confined to a wheelchair. We lost his ability to perform like this you know what it's okay he earned his rest and we have some amazing memories
I adored him in the Rocky Horror Show. His speaking and singing voice blew me away. Can't believe we have been robbed of a wonderful man.
From what I've read (okay, mostly here from posters on other TC posts) he has continued PT since his stroke and has returned to voice over work as well as convention appearances, so we may all be fortunate enough to encounter this magical man again. ❤
