this is a live show in 1978. why do you think they'd have studio trickery or pitch-correction software that hadn't been invented yet on stage at a Californian megachurch full of hippies?
These guys helped get me through my divorce (after 16 years) back in ‘86. Drove miles listening to them Whiteheart, DeGarmo and Key, many others of that era but these were the main boys.
And here we are 44 years later and I will see Petra tonight out here in Enid Oklahoma. No way did any of these guys think that this band would still exist 44 years later!
I have Rob Frazier's Retrospect CD... a lot of great songs! Bob is always great on that guitar! The drummer, Mike Martin, is a very good singer. This is an excellent version of the Petra band.
Yeah, this is some good, raw playing. Very good performance! I like those old tunes. That soul man drummer is killing it on vocals. Bob and Rob are the only 2 I know out of this lineup.
I was saved at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in January 1970, and as part of the Jesus Movement, we were rocking out for Jesus all thru the 1970s! That's my buddy Jimmy Kempner who introduces the band at the beginning.
Wow! What happen to that “Taste and See” and “Why Should the Father Bother” sound? That is just a great raw solid sound without a bunch of lights and wind blown hair theatrics.
...and they had concerts like this every Saturday night at that church? Do these people have *any idea* how fortunate they were? In 1978, I never even heard of Petra, Phil Keaggy, DeGarmo & Key, Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill ... All I heard to that point was "O Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins singers, and "Amazing Grace" by Judy Collins!
I know right. All we had was Amy Grant 'Never Alone' from 1980 & an old Imperials LP. Then Michael W Smith came out with a couple a great albums - then we discovered Petra - 'Never Say Die' & 'More Power to Ya' and so so many more great Spirit filled bands. Not to forget the So Cal original 'Sweet Comfort Band' - which lacked Petra's legs - only an 11 year run 73-84, not 33 years, but those 11 years = 7 or 8 stellar Albums ! I still have a collection of 500+. Gospel Rock Jazz Pop Albums.... God used this music mightily in our lives...my 5 kids are fans of much of my 'old music' - Petra is their Favorite... PS the "Classic Petra - Back to the Rock - Album & LIVE Concert VIDEO from 2011 is GOLDEN. Greg X Volz & Bob H & band hadn't lost ANY of their ability.
I saw Rob Frazier play a solo set with a backing track in one of the small tent stages at Spirit West Coast in '97 or '98. I remember the entire audience groaning when he told the story of him deciding to go solo when it was obvious Petra wasn't going anywhere. That's a choice to regret. Anyway, Rob has a good voice.
I like this version of "Taste and See" better than the album version. I'm assuming this show was before they started recording for "Washes Whiter Than" (and of course Mike Martin and Tommy Bolles weren't on Washes Whiter Than).
Reading the Bible is a privilege granted to us from the past centuries. Leastening to Petra music... from those recent decades ! Bénis soient-ils. Bless them.
That was fun! This was just before we saw Petra live for the first time when Greg X was new and I believe he wasn’t even an official member yet. Wow, and it’s good to see Bob without his “hair hat”.
The people at this are stunned to be hearing real all out rock n roll in the church!! I don't think they know how to react to it or if it's even ok to listening to it. lol. Back in 78 it was a big deal to have electric guitars or electric anything let alone drums. But God is bigger than the boxes people so often try to put Him in. I'm so glad he is too because we people so often get our flesh in the way. Even today many are wanting to put music in categories of what is Gods kind of music or not.
THIS IS SO WONDERFUL. 40 years later, what stays ... Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever. So much history between but the same good god than in those super early days. Very good living and touching music. Wow. THANK YOU, BOB and PETRA !!

come on I wanted to hear Bob sing this I grew up in fort Wayne Indiana where the original petra members started Bob tried to witness to me but I was already saved.
Saw Rob Frazier and Oklahoma Baptist University in 1986 opening for Rick Cua and Steve Camp. Saw Petra on their Farewell Tour in Spokane at a local church....

LOL! I remember going to see these guys back in the day. In the early '80's. The opening band was local from South Carolina...a group called Sons of Thunder. Afterward, I remember LOTS of people complaining about how loud the music was. I had just seen Deep Purple a few weeks before and remember thinking "you think this was loud?" :D
my favorite Christian rock group, there songs rock and its like listening to a bible study, there like a fine wine get better with age. I met john schlitt once really nice guy.

Lyrical excellence as well. Pure Gospel rather than banal lyrics of hedonism and lust falsely labeled as love.

I took a pic with Bob Hartman in Brazil. Such a humble guy. The only one original former still in the band.

Wow. Even before Greg X Volz. Bob was the only one who stuck it out for the long haul.
Although he would later leave Petra, Rob Frazier had a VERY long run in Christian music as a solo artist as well as a songwriter.
Bob IS Petra. :)
John Degroff is still playing bass in band. He also writes for a publication.
Drummer is killin it on vocals and drumming!!
Absolutely, what a gem! 🙌
What a rare piece of Petra history! Never heard of Mike Martin before, but he kills it on Taste and See. Wish we had more of this show.
The first 2 albums were great! I just recently started listening to early Petra and it totally rocks!
loui Weaver came after the first 2 Albums. ..1981. When Star Song was introduced to the band that made Petra big
What a funky "Taste & See"! Love it!
It sure was. Pretty cool.
Absolutely wonderful! Taste, see and listen.. 🤩
Obrigado, meu Deus, por me permitir crescer ouvindo Petra: toda vez que vou tocar bateria eu lembro deles ❤🙏
Refreshing to see Bob unleashed to jam a little.

Don't be afraid of tasting something new
Your soul is hungry, nothing else will do
The bread of life will keep you satisfied
