As a teen, young adult, I was listening to Larry Norman, Keith Green, Mylon Lefever,,,,. Then Came Petra. First album I heard was "Never Say Die" From that moment I was hooked on Petra. That band, those songs, got me thru some tough days. Off at shool, all alone, listening to Petra saved me. Well, actually Jesus saved me, you get what I'm saying. Can't ever say enough about how good that music still is today. Timeless and classic.
My cousin turned me on to Petra in the 1980’s, sent me the CD’s and encouraged me to keep going. I was just converted at work in the middle of the night and didn’t want to give up rock and roll. He opened my eyes to Gods will and that rock and roll wasn’t evil. I am 66 years old now my heart is alive with his spirit.
Was not religious and stuff but in the 80s, i came across some Petra tapes in the mid 80s and they sounded really great. I have listened to them for hours. My favourite was "this means war". That was a great album. Was so nice to find this video.
I went to my first Petra concert at a rescue ministry in Greenville SC in 1973, which was close to the same time I saw Larry Norman, another early pioneer of Christian Rock. From then on, I went to any concerts by Petra I could go to! The music drives home the gospel and my faith got real. I kept going, and now I’m 61. See you guys in heaven. I am thankful beyond words for the witness of Petra!
Thank the Lord for Petra!! I remember being recently Saved young man.I heard The Coloring Song on radio. I went to a local Bible Book store they had a demo section where we could listen to albums .After The Coloring song ended Cameleon came on I as clerk thought this was Christian album he introduced me to Petra here I am 40 years later still serving the Lord Thank you Petra.
The Opening song in Nashville, You could hear the LORD speak, as 5 doves of the Holy Ghost came down upon these 5 wonderful men, Saying, "These are my Beloved Rocker Sons, whom I'm Well Pleased." Greg, You saved a lot of lives as the Front man for Petra. All of you were chosen for the purpose of Petra. Classic Petra in 85 was when I first heard Petra. I was a touring musician myself, and went all the wrong ways. The Lord Brought me back to Him. One evening watching RUclips, it hit me to search Petra and Classic Petra in Nashville popped up, and I have been listening everyday since. The Performance was Perfection. You could tell the Holy Spirit was ALL OVER IT. Praise God. Thank you guys. Volz? I've been around so many Front men in my years, But Greg, you have a special Anointing . Love yall my Brothers in Christ.
Petra songs has been a part of my Christian life since teenage. It helps me grow up and stand up for the Lord. Thank you Petra band for your ministry, I know Im just one of the millions that you inspired. More power to yah!
Not of this World was introduction to Petra and loved them ever since. I can listen to it over and over and never get tired of singing along. The second formation was good but Petra with Greg was just so fantastic. This is now 9 years old and I’m really hoping to hear something new again sometime.
Many many memories of seeing Petra in concert from the early 1980's to their Farewell Tour Concert at the Petra Church in Lancaster, PA. Thank you Petra! Thank you!
Thanks for the gifts you've shared and for being that light in the darkness! From my first album (Cassette!) Beat The System, as a young teen, I was able to understand the gospel through your music! Later, hearing the classic albums, I was able to understand even more, the gift PETRA was and is to this world! Bless you from Down Under! A granny leading her Poppets to know Jesus! :)
I was 5 years old and my oldest brother had a friend who let him borrow that tape. I taught myself to play guitar to that record and made a habit of always sitting down with their records and going through all the parts until I had them all figured out. Id go through all the guitar stuff and then Id go through and learn all the Slick/Lawry parts. I think my fav synth solos are from the More Power to Ya record although Lawry is one of my favorite keyboard players.

Been a fan for over 42 years it’s one of the Christian bands that saved my life when I re dedicated my life to the Lord Jesus the true living king keep rocking for the Lord
Brilliantly anointed. So talented. I saw them in a big concert in the 80s. Always listened to them on local college radio. My group of friends were really into Petra - surfers, motorcycle guys, artists, etc. I once went to a secular concert and someone came up to me and a friend in line and told us we were going to hell for going to the concert. I said that the person didn’t know a thing about me and they needed to spend more time reading their bible. I also told them that IF I wasn’t already a Christian I wouldn’t want to be one now 😂. And i turned around and kept going lol.
Well i am from little Costa Rica and yes .. i grew up listening to Petra and by the grace of God i can say .. i am on the Rock by the grace of God. I went to the only concert they did here and i loved it... God bless you guys and keep on using you as he has done so far...
I went to a PETRA Concert in San Diego .i went cause i had already had starting Hearing This Group. O W0W, what can i Say , but never had ive known all this history and Message. What a Blessing to know truly the full Story of This Great Ministry, that goes beyond the Music. God Is Good. God Bless them All . Thank You Petra, for Your Continual Ministry, for listening to Gods Voice and continually Ministry
was a baby Christian when Keith Green Died and After I was able to see you in Eureka Ca and Medford Oregon a couple times ,I thank and it was nice to see a group of people come forward to give their lives to Christ
18:20: backwards spoken message. That was my idea, my voice. I went into the vocal booth, recorded it onto two-track, and JDBrown reversed the tape and ran it though an audio gizmo. -JSLICK.
I grew up in a very turbulent time, n listenning to your music helped me as I dealt with d issues of life that were pressuring me to compromise. your music was instrumental in leading me to repentance n back to Jesus. thank U , you @.
Yes Lord, I got saved/rescued at the tail end of the Jesus Movement when music, sermons, and Believers had one goal: Tell the world about the Savior Jesus Christ! I listened to Petra and was always blessed by the lyrics and musical style. Good to see Greg X. Volz, Bob Hartman, and the other members - hair and all, sharing the history of Petra. Thanks for sharing the documentary!
I was deeply touched by this video, I have followed Petra since 1978 with their "God Gave Rock and Roll" album. I also love John Schlitt with the band so I nave been blessed by their music. I have made several videos using their music witch is so powerful.
I love Petra's music. They were a great hard rock band. Made some great albums. Wish theyd reform. Would love to see Petra and Rez band would reform and tour. That would be a great tour. No human leads anyone to Jesus. God is the only one through Christ who leads a person to the Christ. We are only instruments of God's will. Praise Jesus.
That was such a blessing to watch. Petra means so much to me. I heard More Power to ya album back in 1986, and i wasnt a Christian at the time and I would put on the LP after listening to all kinds of Satanic rock. It was like a light shining on me. Judas Kiss really captured me but I had no idea what the lyrics were about. A year later I was born again and I realised that song had sewn a seed.... the message what are you looking for the devil for when you oughta be looking for the Lord... i believe God spoke to me through the music of Petra and it changed my life forever. God bless.
Have this dvd set.First seen it on tbn and I was blown away to see the band together. Then seen them in WV on the tour. Was a dream come true didnt get to see them in concert or meet them in the 80s
I grew up in a very conservative denomination where Petra was considered devil music. I found Petra through a friend and my Dad saw how it was ministering to me as a young person. He even started listening to them and found the anointing that the Lord placed on their songs. Love Petra and so thankful for the work that the Lord did through their ministry :D
I love you Petra guys... Petra Praise - The Rock cries out been album which deeply touched my heart... Since then these worship and praise songs by Petra been driving me in many moments of my prayer and worship time with Jesus.. God bless you, Petra guys for your ministry
For those who may wonder why they primarily put out rock music, listen to Bob in the beginning and keep in mind "Petra" means rock. That is it. No other motive other than to praise and glorify God.
What a great documentary guys, I have been a fan since 1980 and I always knew the Holy Spirit had his hand upon you all but I really appreciate hearing you all tell how much Gods Spirit played the lead in your ministry. I too have wanted to play in a group that was totally sold out for Him. The words to your songs are so inspiring and make me want to praise God . After listening to some of your albums all day I feel as if I am supercharged and ready to spread Gods love. May God continue to keep you and bless you all for the rest of your lives or till His return. Peace,
I learned English translating Petra, I really did!. I am from Mexico, loved this band but I little understood the lyrics. Back those days I would use an English-Spanish dictionary to translate. So happy when Petra Alabanza came out. ;) one day my mom trashed my cassettes. Hahhah I bought them again next year, I still have like 25 cassettes.. hahaha
I really wish John Slick would have participated in this. I was a young piano/keyboard player in high school during those Petra years and I really admired and tried to copy his keyboard chops!
@@jslick4589 OMG thanks for the reply John. Don't worry I did discover the classics when I got a little older--but I think we all maintain a little bit of a soft spot for the musicians we followed as teenagers. :)
Love the group. I have to say I did get saved at one of those events that exposed backward masking in 1983 and was grateful to God for the preacher Billy Mayo
I agree! That 1970s Jesus Movement WAS a Holy Spirit enriched REVIVAL!!! My older sister and I were RADICALLY SAVED in 1980!!! The Lord used Petra’s godly lyrics as well as 2nd Chapter of Acts songs to steady my newly saved heart. But Keith Green’s music was used like a solid rock foundation that deeply influenced me to NEVER compromise!😂😂😂! Powerful days! We also enjoyed Tom Howard’s music and one of BJ Thomas’s albums, oh, and Fireworks, which Louie Weaver just mentioned.
Truly anointed men of God; I can still hear Gods' "Amen"; feel The Holy Spirits' moving through their music. The convicting power, and the ability to resonate the Christ within...what a true example of ministry, not minstrelsy. Thanks, Petra, you affirm my choice to hold to the High Standard .

Awesome Doc on a very talented and committed group of musicians who, even if you can't dig their convictions and motivations, are very passionate about this elaborate, long-standing collaboration!
TO CHUCK ROSS; What has happened in music is occultic teaching and "doctrines of demons". E.W. Kenyon the occultic teacher first passed it onto Kenneth Hagin. And today most music that has the label christian is earthly and very luke warm.
MORE POWER TO YA.......,the Holy Spirit is speaking through this group of people. You may be only one person........however, faith is being encouraged with the agreement in your soul.
Petra, Resurrection Band, Daniel Band, Stryper...in other words, bands that were worthy of playing the Cornerstone Festival. That was the golden age of Christian music. Sadly I doubt we will ever see it again, Nashville has decided what we get to hear now.
