    STAND UP FOR ANTIGUA
    Lyrics: Dr. Sir Prince Ramsey
    Musical Composer: Toriano ‘Onyan’ Edwards
Vocals: ‘The Patriettes’: Nadine Jeffrey Blackman, Charmaine Quinland Donovan, Jamila Bell, Joelle Michael, Dorothea Blackman Brown
Piano and Vocal Arrangements: Dr. George Roberts
    Photography: Dr. Gwendolyn Fevrier-Roberts
I can never forget the night on which this song was written. We were playing our usual Saturday night dominoes when someone made some careless negative remarks about one of the group’s native land. The response was instant and sharp, as the aggrieved party defended his land to the hilt. Sir Prince was struck by this, and reflected that in contrast many Antiguans almost seemed to take pleasure in saying negative things about their country. He went on to write this song that same night, and the masterful King Onyan took it to make a big hit and win the calypso crown that year.
I took great pleasure in arranging this iconic piece in a choral style for the voices of these five lovely and talented ladies. In my characteristically eclectic fashion it starts and ends with a strident call for all to ’Stand Up’, and in the middle of the piece is inserted a hymn- like passage developing the signature line ‘Ah Yah Me Born’. ‘Stand up for Antigua’ is a message for all to take to heart, not just at Independence time but throughout the year.
Thanks for listening to and appreciating my efforts. It makes all the time spent on developing these videos worthwhile. I would be grateful if everyone subscribes, shares and likes this at • King Onyan/Sir Prince ... . Also encourage friends and family to do likewise. I will be regularly uploading musical musings to this site as they emerge.

Because of this piece, I will not apologize for being a proud offspring of a married couple, who are a son and a daughter of Antigua. This is creative! Dr. George Roberts has crafted calypsonian King Onyan’s work into a unique arrangement. He is not just talented, but gifted. Those “patriettes” especially the two sopranos showed how much they love being Antiguans just by singing the song so vehemently. The whole thing was attention-grabbing. Loved it all. Kudos to all of them for a job well done.

Lovely arrangement Sir George. Individual mics would have brought out the words even more for those who are non nationals

Actually some professional musicians have suggested that recording in a studio would have been desirable to better. Being out the inner workings of the arrangement. The plan had originally been to have a studio recording. Unfortunately we were unable to get it completed before Independence and so the decision to do it live was made at the very last moment, yesterday in fact.

Question: we’re you in 3 A at AGS in 1971? I am thinking you were my classmate

u are on point re the recording. we had started recording tracks but ran out of time. so just did it live the day before I deepen and put it out
but I still intend to do a more refined recording for posterity.
I would have Ben a couple of years ahead of you at AGS. I did o levee in 1971 with Harold Lovell, Don Charles, Colin Murdoch, Lyle Browne etc.
