    That bit you did with the roof caving in was spot on. Makes no sense that filmmakers think they are immune to criticism after making a bad product because "they put a lot of effort into creating their vision." Don't understand how sports broadcasters can be so critical to all these athletes playing poorly and get no flack, but telling people a movie is bad is forbidden

      @@Stew91Just look at some modern feminist movies. The product can be objectively bad, but instead of taking responsibility for the poor ticket sales/ratings they shame and slur the "toxic men and fanboys" for ruining people's perception of their product. Do not even try to tell me they don't do that; every Mary Sue article does this. Then you find out that ironically, it was the men who make up the majority of the demographic that watch their "female-centric" projects. Absolutely hilarious.

    • @VikingMatt879
      @VikingMatt879 11 месяцев назад +6

      @@chomosuke0720 Exactly. This is the way that feminist movies make themselves critic proof. 2016 Ghostbusters female reboot was a very very bad piece of filmmaking on every level. If you acknowledged it was horrible, you were a toxic male who hated female-driven movies. In today's woke society, doing this can get you cancelled. This makes men afraid to say the truth, so they give it a pass on paper.

      Stuckmann's not a movie critic anymore, because he now won't do both halves of the job, yet he feels quite comfortable criticizing movie studios based on inference and supposition. It's a strange twist.
      The sad part is that, for all the valid complaining about media and how it isn't above criticism, the state of film criticism itself is in worse shape than that of media. Most of the RUclips channels now on the "bash Chris Stuckmann" bandwagon aren't really knowledgeable film critics either, and many have their own predictable "anti-woke" dog-whistle axes to grind to get viewership. I would never go the majority of these people for an objective or informed opinion of a film, so many of them looking at Stuckmann's critical qualifications should also take a look at their own.

      Keep in mind that they are often contractually obligated to lie. There are many cases when filmmakers came out later, after the contract expired, and given us their true feelings. Granted, I do agree Web was mostly likely at least partially the fault of the creatives, but we cannot be certain without more information. This is why, as Cody pointed out, Chris's video is really just pointless. There is very little evidence he is intentionally lying about anything.

      Newsflash: People sometimes lie. Especially when actors are contractually obligated to appear in promotional interviews about the movie they are in and their contract (and etiquette) demands they can't say anything openly negative about the movie _if they ever want to be hired by any studio ever again!_ Becausen o director or studio likes it if actors bite the hand that feeds them.

    It's odd that something like this warrants a discussion. If somebody puts out a product of any kind, whether it's for necessity or entertainment and expects you to pay money for it, you have every right in the world to criticize it as you see fit. Even if you somehow receive the product for free, you can still criticize it since that product is available for public access.

      like when the critical drinker reviewed Ladyballers, a Daily wire comedy movie. He's buddies with Ben Shapiro, yet he still criticized the movie fairly, and said that since its their first time making a comedy similar to the comedies from the 2000s, they need to adjust how they make it and hire better writers. 2 things. In response to the Chris Stuckmann situation.
    1. I do think Movie Criticism is slowly dying off. Because alot of people just don't take film criticism seriously unless it's about a movie they hate
    2. The people who were the naysayers in Chris Stuckmann's section have the strangest form of Short Term Memory loss since Chris literally made a video saying how he looks at movies in a different light because of him working with movies now.
    Like obviously if he wants to be a film maker he can't criticize films the say way because people are gunna be reluctant to hire him. Like do you honestly turn on your tv and here movie makers bashing other film makers? Of course not. Because they have a rep and a career to maintain.

    I really don't blame Stuckman after I learned a few details I had no knowledge of. After he made a rewrite for one of those Batman movies and posted it online he received so much hate that it went to the point that some dude tracked his father down and threatened him. I'll say this about Stuckman, he is a better man than me because if ANYBODY approach me or my family in even a slightly threatening manner (over a movie) that person would be no more.
    Yall take this shit to serious. Freaking video games, movies and comic books. Fools out here threatening people over pop culture while people in Palestine are being genocide. We need to walk up and take our heads outta these funny books for a minute. I never imagine that Nerd culture would become so volatile and toxic. I never saw the episode of the Revenge of the Nerds where the Nerds resulted to violence, all them dudes wanted to do was get girls and be Nerds. I don't know what you dudes is on now a days. It really makes me sad, I never thought I would be ashamed to be a Nerd but I am today with how everyone is attacking Stuckman. I listened to what he said about the Madame Web movie and to be honest a real Shill for the house of Mouse would not have said any of that, he actually took a chance to jeopardize his position as a potential Shill by what he said if the Mouse really wanted to trip. Essentially what he said was the movie was sabotaged but I don't think he could come right out and say that and I agree with him, just look at that movie. There is no way anyone could make a movie that bad unless they did so on purpose but I think everyone is so hungry to eat each other alive we haven't stop to look at things for what it is and I think that is the toxicity with the Nerd culture now, be have become bullies and we are so ready to attack others for the smallest reason just because they disagree with us or criticize a beloved IP of ours. I don't think this shit is that serious man. This supposed to be fun and once upon a time people like Stuckman made it fun, but now you look at that dude and he looks like hes a footstep away from having a nervous breakdown. That ain't cool man. You talking about someone who supported this culture that we have, someone who was brave enough to develop it to this point, someone who gave us something that we wanted because I know I got a lot out of Stuckman over the years. I don't like it when people gang up on one man, especially if that man is one of my mans.
    Yall take the fun outta this culture; the so called fans. Threatening people and their fam. Thats ridiculous. A dude like me from the streets and from the ghetto found a safe place in the Geek culture with all of our nerdy activities that was an alternative to violence and crime and now this has become just as bad as life in the hood where a nigga ain't even safe as a nerd no more. Dude is walking on eggshells out here! Between these toxic fans and the Shill shit, should we be surprised that Stuckman is straddling the fence now? You have to understand some of us wanna do other stuff some day. Stuckman always said that he wanted to make movies one day, that was his real aim and not to be a movie critic so he gotta walk that line out here, he can't say to much hardcore shit- he gotta play the game until hes in position. I don't like it but thats the way the business works and I think he's doing it better than I could; trying to be a corpo and a geek.
    Anyway. This shit is a huge turn off for me. Yall killing the vibe. Why don't yall tell people to relax. Can't you see this dude is under pressure- some fuck threatened his father, go look at that video when he talked about that and look how unhealthy he looks theres. Is this what we want for someone who was a champion for the culture? Yall need to relax man. We all need to chill. Can yall please just lay off that dude for a second.

    There are so many awful movies nowadays, and to Stuckmann the main reason is too much studio interference? So otherwise, most movies would be great? This has to be the most ridiculous argument of all time. I think many critics (like Mark Kermode, for example) noted that, at least in the case of Madame Web, it was bad because everyone involved - director, producer, actors, and everyone else in the production team, just wouldn't be bothered.
    By definition, a "critic" has to point out the good as well as the bad in all movies. Renowned critics like Ebert, Siskel, Kael, etc., were often sarcastic and even brutal in their remarks. If you refrain from saying anything that might offend and moreover, the first three of your 8 -minute video consist of advertising some other product, please do something else instead.

I myself studied film in college and been watching films my entire life. I'm 39. I'm no gene Siskel. But I can tell you without a doubt. 99% of the youtubers out there know nothing about film. At least half of them have never even heard of some of the classic films like citizen Kane or the song of Bernadette or black narcissus. 90% of the younger gen zish ones don't know who gene Hackman or holly hunter or people like that are. And 99% or more have never held a film camera in their entire lives and have lived their entire lives on a cell phone. I'm no baby boomer but I'm old enough to know the real deal. Freedom of speech, expression and free will of course will always be allowed. But in this world celebrity used to mean something. Hard work in art used to mean something. If you don't know who sidney Poitier was. Then in my opinion maybe you have no business being a "film person". Solution. Keep your day job. Make a cat video. Keep your mouth shut. That goes for everyone including me. But if you are Tom Cruise. If you can make a billion dollars and you know what you're doing. Then go for it.

    Stuckmann can create whatever he pleases. if he wants to go this route of only praising movies, not criticizing them, good for him and his channel must produce such income, that why would he waste time watching garbage and creating a video when he can do literally anything else. no problem there and like you say, whoever doesnt like it can simply unsubscribe and watch any of the thousands of channels that are more balanced.
    the problem with the video he made was that he was telling people how they need to stop watching movies that are butchered by blatant studio interference and to "decide with our wallets"...and yet he wont give an honest review on a bad movie. and this is just hypocrisy and even sort of arrogance...

    Now in regards to someone's comment that, "Criticism isn't bashing" well that's correct it shouldn't be that.
    Criticism is giving a mature, thought out, and sensible breakdown of what they felt worked and did not work for a film. And then with that followed by if they liked or disliked the film overall.
    And that's why I like coming to RUclips mostly versus fan groups as their reactions are more childish. Many even just bash films for the sake of bashing them to try and fit in as if they were in high school.
    It's the toxic fandom that I partly would like movie criticism to die out. We have the "It sucks!" "Hollywood has run out of ideas", "You ruined my childhood!" mentality today.
    Fans either forget or don't know that making movies is an art that is surreal, creative, and imaginative work that film artists share with us.
    Instead the self-entitled world we live in today has no appreciation or respect due the films or the artists that create them. Not only the film but some film artists get bashed as well just over not liking their film(s).
    They treat movies like a classroom assignment that has to have a particular structure and criteria that has to be met. And all of that while meeting the unrealistic expectation of appealing to every individual fan.
    Many fans today cannot take the adult approach of just experiencing different things to find what they like. They act as if they don't know that they will not like everything. And that the things they don't enjoy they can just move on instead of making it a point to bash the films they don't like relentlessly and going way overboard.
    It is just plain ridiculous.

      Hollywood has run out of ideas is a statement thats so outdated. And this ain't true after watching indie animated shows. It has less to do with new ideas but rather the funding and having creative freedom to make an original movie.
      Disneys Wish had the potential to be a good movie which is why theres so many animatics of people who wanted to see what the original concept was because the final film feels so corporate

    Stuckmann is a clear example of someone who got lucky and all his bragging about having gone to film school that idiots ate up over the years and made him a millionaire really went to his head. This is just as much on those idiots who continue to follow him and feed his ego. The only guy besides you and angry Joe I follow is Jahns. Sometimes his over the top super caffeinated energy annoys me but he’s legit. He has no ego like Stuckmann. I have no sympathy for those complaining about him now. They created the problem building him up how they did. Oh well.

  • @Malt454
    @Malt454 11 месяцев назад +4

    You make a number of good points, but I don't know why Stuckmann should care about your business model or whether the majority of those in the over-saturated RUclips media-review market are left behind. In terms of the quality they offer, many should be left behind, particularly those who have to sound an "anti-woke" dog whistle in every video in order to mobilize bias instead of providing informed opinion. If you're somehow beholden to following trends, then that's your own objectivity compromised right there. For better or worse, and whether he can now maintain it or not, Stuckmann EARNED his "privileged position" through hard work; he doesn't "owe" other reviewers anything, especially those who are now jumping on the "Stuckmann bashing band wagon" for fun AND profit.

    • @CodyLeachYT
      @CodyLeachYT  11 месяцев назад +5

      I said that he earned that position and never once said he owes anyone anything. You horribly misrepresented my point.

    • @Malt454
      @Malt454 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@CodyLeachYT - Fair enough, and I apologize if I did. It is funny, however, to look at Chris' position as "privileged" if it's acknowledged THAT he earned it, as opposed to just saying he's just in a different position in the media-review food chain from other people. Where does "privilege" really come into it?
      It's certainly fair to say that his success gives him advantages that other RUclipsrs don't have, but what of it? Somehow Stuckmann needs to be more "self aware" that others aren't at his level of success because he now wants to do things differently than he previously did, even though he and his channel "don't have to innovate or evolve" while he's also theoretically free to "do his own thing"?
      One thing that he's probably very aware of right now is that there certainly is no "fraternity of critics" - everyone and his brother just "has" to make a video on this "controversy." Some of these videos ARE well done and add to a valid discussion, but almost all are also playing to current trends and their own business model.
      Maybe his critics need to be more self aware as well.
      I don't think Stuckmann is really casting shade on what other people do. I think his failure as a critic has far more to do with now only wanting to do half the job and a willingness to now pan studios but not movies.
      But there's also just too much supposition for me in the entire thing, from Chris supposedly knowing how Sony works to other people reading his video as some kind of attack or cynical "clickbait" ad-money grab. Sticking to the facts, there just isn't all that much to this "controversy", so people throw in their theories to pad it out and give it a life of its own - and that, as much as anything else, is a comment on the current state of movie criticism, particularly on RUclips.
      I certainly agree that everyone, inside the movie business and outside of it, is responsible for their own levels of performance and apathy. Anyway, you provided good food for thought.

  • @indauroleal7953
    @indauroleal7953 11 месяцев назад +6

    I really don't think Stuckman is throwing shade at anybody. If he did, he would be bashing his own old self. He never said he regretted his Hilarocity reviews and he did not take them down . I think his decision was a smart one because he believes that being a movie critic is not compatible with his new role as a creative. Making a bad review might mean that a producer of a movie that you just bashed won't be willing to invest in your project There is nothing wrong in protecting your own interest.

    When I was little I used to rent movies. No one in the store ever told me, "That movie is bad because of studio interference". I also sometimes watched movies in the cinema. No one there ever said, "There was probably studio interfere". I never read about such a thing in the newspaper. In school movies were rarely talked about at all and if it was, they said, "The Fast and the Furious is so good" or "Paranormal activity is the scariest movie of all time". No one knew about studio interference and talked about it. It wasn't until very late, when I started watching review channels around three years ago, that I learned that this was a thing. Where was I supposed to learn about that when the info wasn't there to teach me about it? It was either you or Chris who told me about it the first time I heard of it. Even after learning that this is a thing, I never think about it when I hear that a movie is good or bad, so for that reason I thought that Chris's video was interesting, because I hadn't heard all of that before.

    I've done this for years, I have my favourite movie channels on here (Yours, Movie Timelines, Goodbad flicks, Horror geek, Brandon Tenold, Horror culture, fanboy flicks etc) and i watch those fairly religiously, I don't agree with all of your movie tastes or even all of the views expressed in them but I like the personalities, I enjoy the humour and the effort that's put into the videos and I get a decent amount of entertainment value out of them. It literally costs me NOTHING in return other than to watch like and subscribe so i wouldn't have the audacity to rant and demand anything from any of the channels I watch, like you say, if I don't enjoy the content you guys produce, don't watch it, I've done it plenty of times. There's very popular channels out there I don't enjoy for one reason or another, Chris Struckmans is one of them, YMS is another, yet I don't go on there to spout shit at them, I just don't bother watching. It means literally fuckall to them that one insignificant pauper like me isn't watching their videos, yet the damage I could do to them mentally, by leaving shitty comments and getting angry and in thier face is immense. There's no need for it.
    I watch channels I enjoy, leave comments pertaining to the content, occasionally say thank you and then i switch off. I form a bit of a bond with people like yourself with watching so regularly, I'm not stupid, I know the bond is not mutual because people like yourself don't see me or even know I exist for the most part but that's the thing you get as a viewer from watching certain channels, it's just a shame that some viewers can't separate the fact that the experience they're having while watching a video, is not the shared experience the creator is having from posting it, it's not like having a one to one conversation.
    I personally prefer bad movie reviews, i think it lends itself to good entertainment a lot more than glowing reviews do, there's just something so entertaining about watching someone melt down over a really bad film lol People need to realise though that no one is ever going to have the exact same tastes and thoughts as ourselves, no one. There'll always be films you like that I don't and vice versa, getting angry over it is silly.
    Not only is giving creators grief just an unpleasant thing to do but some RUclipsrs just can't handle any form of criticism no matter how polite it is, I learned this the hard way a few years ago when watching a channel i enjoyed called Minty comedic arts, where the only issue i had was the mic the guy was using was tinny and not very good, it sounded awful and was off putting, so i jokingly asked him to buy a better mic in the comments and he exploded and gave me a load of grief, writing baby noises and posting hate filled stuff at me. I learned that day to just not watch channels I have any kind of issues with because the people running those channels are not always the mentally sane and nice people they portray themselves as, some of them have issues lol
    The best thing to do as a viewer is just like and subscribe, occasionally leave a funny or thankful comment and piss off lol There's no point getting bent up on other peoples life choices, views or movie critiques, everyone's different, that's just a fact of life.

    I stumbled upon your channel a few months back, Jeffrey and Chris were my go too for any reviews I wanted, but when Chris seemed to avoid reviewing certain films some of which some deemed "controversial", well that took the wind out of the sales for me, we need reviewers to not take sides, there is too much of that shit being pushed in real life, we don't need it with our entertainment and art, so I decided to bow out, it's critics like goodself and Jeffrey that realise that the viewers are here for one thing and one thing only, an honest review. Keep up the great work 👍🏻🇮🇪

    Well going by what you you said about limited time on this planet. Im not going to waste it telling/listening to someone telling me me what i should and should not see or watch when it comes to entertainment. Thats quite strange and honestly even more of a time waster than making the decision for yourself. Also why are you comparing poorly made food to movies? One could sevearly hurt you the other just wastes your time and money ( also food from restaurants cost more than a ticket) yeah quite the comparison these things are totally related. And if you think a 14 dollar movie ticket is that expensive then get a job. I get it money and time is precious. listensing to someone tell me and others what they should and should not see is quite laughable.

    Very well said, and I’m sure I’m not the first to reply to your video this way, but it’s unfortunately not just the film industry. That same seemingly entitled attitude to praise just for results is in many creative fields and it’s rampant in the world and fandom of book publishing. Authors are searching for reviews of their work on Goodreads, Amazon and other reading platforms and when they find those that are less than five stars or aren’t exuding absolute adoration, there is this pushback from them and their fans about people and critics being “haters” or ignorant for not appreciating the time and effort that goes into writing and publishing a book. As someone who made her living for almost 20 years as a journalist and photographer for community newspapers, you get a variety of feedback on a weekly basis. Some of it is constructive criticism, some of it is complimentary and some of it is outright negative bordering on hostile (I had people call me names and threatento get me fired; my editor even had someone key his car). Did it bother me sometimes that people responded that way? Yes, I am not made of stone. Did I stop writing because of it? No.
    Not everything we as artists/writers/creators make is going to be golden. Some of it will be mediocre or outright poorly done. That’s just the risk you take when you turn that creative thing into a product and tell people that what you do is quality enough for them to give you their money. Not all criticism is valid, but neither is only positivity.
