That bit you did with the roof caving in was spot on. Makes no sense that filmmakers think they are immune to criticism after making a bad product because "they put a lot of effort into creating their vision." Don't understand how sports broadcasters can be so critical to all these athletes playing poorly and get no flack, but telling people a movie is bad is forbidden

@@Stew91Just look at some modern feminist movies. The product can be objectively bad, but instead of taking responsibility for the poor ticket sales/ratings they shame and slur the "toxic men and fanboys" for ruining people's perception of their product. Do not even try to tell me they don't do that; every Mary Sue article does this. Then you find out that ironically, it was the men who make up the majority of the demographic that watch their "female-centric" projects. Absolutely hilarious.

    • @VikingMatt879
      @VikingMatt879 7 месяцев назад +7

@@chomosuke0720 Exactly. This is the way that feminist movies make themselves critic proof. 2016 Ghostbusters female reboot was a very very bad piece of filmmaking on every level. If you acknowledged it was horrible, you were a toxic male who hated female-driven movies. In today's woke society, doing this can get you cancelled. This makes men afraid to say the truth, so they give it a pass on paper.

Stuckmann's not a movie critic anymore, because he now won't do both halves of the job, yet he feels quite comfortable criticizing movie studios based on inference and supposition. It's a strange twist.
The sad part is that, for all the valid complaining about media and how it isn't above criticism, the state of film criticism itself is in worse shape than that of media. Most of the RUclips channels now on the "bash Chris Stuckmann" bandwagon aren't really knowledgeable film critics either, and many have their own predictable "anti-woke" dog-whistle axes to grind to get viewership. I would never go the majority of these people for an objective or informed opinion of a film, so many of them looking at Stuckmann's critical qualifications should also take a look at their own.

Both of them have told me that I just need to enjoy the movie and not think about it. Both of them feel that movies aren't supposed to be analyzed or critiqued, and you're supposed to just take a movie in and enjoy it for what it is, and not analyze themes or how a sequel is supposed to fit into a greater franchise.

There are so many awful movies nowadays, and to Stuckmann the main reason is too much studio interference? So otherwise, most movies would be great? This has to be the most ridiculous argument of all time. I think many critics (like Mark Kermode, for example) noted that, at least in the case of Madame Web, it was bad because everyone involved - director, producer, actors, and everyone else in the production team, just wouldn't be bothered.
By definition, a "critic" has to point out the good as well as the bad in all movies. Renowned critics like Ebert, Siskel, Kael, etc., were often sarcastic and even brutal in their remarks. If you refrain from saying anything that might offend and moreover, the first three of your 8 -minute video consist of advertising some other product, please do something else instead.

Stuckmann can create whatever he pleases. if he wants to go this route of only praising movies, not criticizing them, good for him and his channel must produce such income, that why would he waste time watching garbage and creating a video when he can do literally anything else. no problem there and like you say, whoever doesnt like it can simply unsubscribe and watch any of the thousands of channels that are more balanced.
the problem with the video he made was that he was telling people how they need to stop watching movies that are butchered by blatant studio interference and to "decide with our wallets"...and yet he wont give an honest review on a bad movie. and this is just hypocrisy and even sort of arrogance...
he cant just have it both ways. either he should give balanced reviews, or stick to this route he chose. and if he actually wanted to speak about studio interference sometimes butchering movies, fine, but he should have omitted anything and everything about Madame Web...

Now in regards to someone's comment that, "Criticism isn't bashing" well that's correct it shouldn't be that.
Criticism is giving a mature, thought out, and sensible breakdown of what they felt worked and did not work for a film. And then with that followed by if they liked or disliked the film overall.
And that's why I like coming to RUclips mostly versus fan groups as their reactions are more childish. Many even just bash films for the sake of bashing them to try and fit in as if they were in high school.
It's the toxic fandom that I partly would like movie criticism to die out. We have the "It sucks!" "Hollywood has run out of ideas", "You ruined my childhood!" mentality today.
Fans either forget or don't know that making movies is an art that is surreal, creative, and imaginative work that film artists share with us.
Instead the self-entitled world we live in today has no appreciation or respect due the films or the artists that create them. Not only the film but some film artists get bashed as well just over not liking their film(s).
They treat movies like a classroom assignment that has to have a particular structure and criteria that has to be met. And all of that while meeting the unrealistic expectation of appealing to every individual fan.
Many fans today cannot take the adult approach of just experiencing different things to find what they like. They act as if they don't know that they will not like everything. And that the things they don't enjoy they can just move on instead of making it a point to bash the films they don't like relentlessly and going way overboard.
    It is just plain ridiculous.

Hollywood has run out of ideas is a statement thats so outdated. And this ain't true after watching indie animated shows. It has less to do with new ideas but rather the funding and having creative freedom to make an original movie.

Look what's happening to marvel, or IGN reviews, hatred is becoming a new way of to make money and that's happening in all RUclips. So, I think this is just another artificial outrage. You make a number of good points, but I don't know why Stuckmann should care about your business model or whether the majority of those in the over-saturated RUclips media-review market are left behind. In terms of the quality they offer, many should be left behind, particularly those who have to sound an "anti-woke" dog whistle in every video in order to mobilize bias instead of providing informed opinion. If you're somehow beholden to following trends, then that's your own objectivity compromised right there. For better or worse, and whether he can now maintain it or not, Stuckmann EARNED his "privileged position" through hard work; he doesn't "owe" other reviewers anything, especially those who are now jumping on the "Stuckmann bashing band wagon" for fun AND profit.

    • @CodyLeachYT

@@CodyLeachYT - Fair enough, and I apologize if I did. It is funny, however, to look at Chris' position as "privileged" if it's acknowledged THAT he earned it, as opposed to just saying he's just in a different position in the media-review food chain from other people. Where does "privilege" really come into it?
It's certainly fair to say that his success gives him advantages that other RUclipsrs don't have, but what of it? Somehow Stuckmann needs to be more "self aware" that others aren't at his level of success because he now wants to do things differently than he previously did, even though he and his channel "don't have to innovate or evolve" while he's also theoretically free to "do his own thing"?
One thing that he's probably very aware of right now is that there certainly is no "fraternity of critics" - everyone and his brother just "has" to make a video on this "controversy." Some of these videos ARE well done and add to a valid discussion, but almost all are also playing to current trends and their own business model.
Maybe his critics need to be more self aware as well.
I don't think Stuckmann is really casting shade on what other people do. I think his failure as a critic has far more to do with now only wanting to do half the job and a willingness to now pan studios but not movies.
But there's also just too much supposition for me in the entire thing, from Chris supposedly knowing how Sony works to other people reading his video as some kind of attack or cynical "clickbait" ad-money grab. Sticking to the facts, there just isn't all that much to this "controversy", so people throw in their theories to pad it out and give it a life of its own - and that, as much as anything else, is a comment on the current state of movie criticism, particularly on RUclips.
I certainly agree that everyone, inside the movie business and outside of it, is responsible for their own levels of performance and apathy. Anyway, you provided good food for thought.

No, man. It is because he is a professional in that industry. Speaking negatively of people you may end up working with burns bridges and can end your career. This is true in ALL industries. Chris has been very direct that this is his reason for the change. He has not told other critics to stop making negative reviews. Cody got that impression, but it is just that, an impression, and Cody explicitly pointed that out.

When I was little I used to rent movies. No one in the store ever told me, "That movie is bad because of studio interference". I also sometimes watched movies in the cinema. No one there ever said, "There was probably studio interfere". I never read about such a thing in the newspaper. In school movies were rarely talked about at all and if it was, they said, "The Fast and the Furious is so good" or "Paranormal activity is the scariest movie of all time". No one knew about studio interference and talked about it. It wasn't until very late, when I started watching review channels around three years ago, that I learned that this was a thing. Where was I supposed to learn about that when the info wasn't there to teach me about it? It was either you or Chris who told me about it the first time I heard of it. Even after learning that this is a thing, I never think about it when I hear that a movie is good or bad, so for that reason I thought that Chris's video was interesting, because I hadn't heard all of that before.

The reason I stopped watching movie review channels was because I usually watched the review after I saw the movie and if I enjoyed the movie, hearing someone dump on it just isn’t fun for me. It pretty much coincided with the MCU dip in quality. I get that they aren’t making “good films” very often anymore, but I enjoy seeing these characters on the big screen and I just struggle supporting someone who doesn’t enjoy it like me

My only issue with movie criticism is that everybody thinks they are a critic and forget how to have fun. I'm not saying every movie needs to be loved or every movie is great. What I am saying is that it's becoming a thing where if it's not this grand movie or serious movie or even an Oscar bait movie, people shit on it. If it's just a dumb, fun time at the theater, it's awful. For example, Argylle. I loved Argylle. It's so much fun, it's so dumb, and I enjoyed myself. Meanwhile, Twitter people decided because it wasn't this serious spy action adventure, it was bad. If it didn't work for you, that's fine. If you had a bunch of issues with it, that's also fine. It's all about how you portray your issues, like cody said. If you can articulate problems you had in a way that's not just "oh its mid", then I will listen to what you have to say even if I disagree. That's what Cody is best at and why I love watching his reviews. He famously wasn't a fan of Halloween 2018, it's my favorite in the franchise. But because he actually knows what he's talking about, I couldn't be mad.

He’s not putting down actual thoughtful critics either, just encouraging more thought beyond just “trash” or the rage videos.

There doesn't seem to be any real critics who write anymore. Just RUclipsrs with ordinary opinions. Where are the real journalists like Roger ebert? I myself studied film in college and been watching films my entire life. I'm 39. I'm no gene Siskel. But I can tell you without a doubt. 99% of the youtubers out there know nothing about film. At least half of them have never even heard of some of the classic films like citizen Kane or the song of Bernadette or black narcissus. 90% of the younger gen zish ones don't know who gene Hackman or holly hunter or people like that are. And 99% or more have never held a film camera in their entire lives and have lived their entire lives on a cell phone. I'm no baby boomer but I'm old enough to know the real deal. Freedom of speech, expression and free will of course will always be allowed. But in this world celebrity used to mean something. Hard work in art used to mean something. If you don't know who sidney Poitier was. Then in my opinion maybe you have no business being a "film person". Solution. Keep your day job. Make a cat video. Keep your mouth shut. That goes for everyone including me. But if you are Tom Cruise. If you can make a billion dollars and you know what you're doing. Then go for it.

I've done this for years, I have my favourite movie channels on here (Yours, Movie Timelines, Goodbad flicks, Horror geek, Brandon Tenold, Horror culture, fanboy flicks etc) and i watch those fairly religiously, I don't agree with all of your movie tastes or even all of the views expressed in them but I like the personalities, I enjoy the humour and the effort that's put into the videos and I get a decent amount of entertainment value out of them. It literally costs me NOTHING in return other than to watch like and subscribe so i wouldn't have the audacity to rant and demand anything from any of the channels I watch, like you say, if I don't enjoy the content you guys produce, don't watch it, I've done it plenty of times. There's very popular channels out there I don't enjoy for one reason or another, Chris Struckmans is one of them, YMS is another, yet I don't go on there to spout shit at them, I just don't bother watching. It means literally fuckall to them that one insignificant pauper like me isn't watching their videos, yet the damage I could do to them mentally, by leaving shitty comments and getting angry and in thier face is immense. There's no need for it.
I watch channels I enjoy, leave comments pertaining to the content, occasionally say thank you and then i switch off. I form a bit of a bond with people like yourself with watching so regularly, I'm not stupid, I know the bond is not mutual because people like yourself don't see me or even know I exist for the most part but that's the thing you get as a viewer from watching certain channels, it's just a shame that some viewers can't separate the fact that the experience they're having while watching a video, is not the shared experience the creator is having from posting it, it's not like having a one to one conversation.
I personally prefer bad movie reviews, i think it lends itself to good entertainment a lot more than glowing reviews do, there's just something so entertaining about watching someone melt down over a really bad film lol People need to realise though that no one is ever going to have the exact same tastes and thoughts as ourselves, no one. There'll always be films you like that I don't and vice versa, getting angry over it is silly.
Not only is giving creators grief just an unpleasant thing to do but some RUclipsrs just can't handle any form of criticism no matter how polite it is, I learned this the hard way a few years ago when watching a channel i enjoyed called Minty comedic arts, where the only issue i had was the mic the guy was using was tinny and not very good, it sounded awful and was off putting, so i jokingly asked him to buy a better mic in the comments and he exploded and gave me a load of grief, writing baby noises and posting hate filled stuff at me. I learned that day to just not watch channels I have any kind of issues with because the people running those channels are not always the mentally sane and nice people they portray themselves as, some of them have issues lol
The best thing to do as a viewer is just like and subscribe, occasionally leave a funny or thankful comment and piss off lol There's no point getting bent up on other peoples life choices, views or movie critiques, everyone's different, that's just a fact of life.

I loved watching this, you brought up so many good points about why criticism is not only necessary, but can be genuinely joyous. I’m someone who still finds value in Many of Chris’ videos, but I found the way you navigated this subject to be respectful and insightful.
Your point on film not being exempt from criticism just because of studios and your hilarious plane story were highlights for me. Reminded me of ridiculous decisions made in former jobs of mine.

Roger Ebert had a favorite story about when he was working at the Chicago Sun-Times and had written a "four-star review" of Ingmar Bergman's "Cries and Whispers." A reader called the paper and asked him if he should go see it (I guess this person didn't actually read reviews -- which, as any critic will tell you, is often the case). Ebert said he thought it was a masterpiece, and maybe the best movie of the year. "Oh," said the caller. "That doesn't sound like anything we'd want to see." Well, that was Ebert's version of the conversation, anyway.
The point is: Nobody can tell you how YOU should "feel" about a movie, or what your experience is or was or will be. A critic's job is that of any intelligent reporter: Report what you see, cite specific examples, and explain the reasoning that brought you to your conclusions. It's like building a case in a court of law. Actual, specific evidence is the foundation of the argument. Sure, all criticism -- and all filmmaking -- is autobiographical and subjective to a large extent. But opinions about anything are worthless unless the person spouting them can explain how and why they got there, and provide the actual evidence -- in this case, by citing actual moments (images, gestures, line readings, juxtapositions of shots) from the movie itself. Otherwise it's not criticism, it's just pontificating. I would never tell someone (especially a stranger!) to go see something. A critic figures that the audience is made up of adults who are capable of gleaning information from a "review" or whatever and making up their own minds. Consumer reporting directives are not only unnecessary but presumptuous.
