  • Edward, Manish, Neil, Chris & Chris are back and, after three weeks of rest Episode 35 is a big one!
90 minutes of pondering which is the best car of the past 30 years, the "reverse Tardis" of cars: big promises and falling short of delivering, ergonomic failures, Formula 1 becoming bigger and bigger, and of course: this week's two car garage for £40k!
Speaking of 2 Car Garage, YOU can now choose next week's two car garage! Put it in the comments below and the panel will select one as they're recording the next episode! Keep it short, sweet, but most importantly: interesting!

Also doesn't it make sense ergonomically? You can go straight from start, engine on, first gear, hand brake off, done.

@@jonathancarson1974anything that can easily be solved is dealt with, e.g Mercedes started pre-scoring their keys to snap off in a controlled manner starting with the W123, now everyone who uses a key does it.
I assume a cut in the wrong place near the knee can cause or contribute to bleeding out.
Mercedes even backed the pre scored wooden trim onto aluminium panels so it would be flexible but snap into squares when impacted 😂

Two Car Garage: You’ve been hired as the creative director for the new James Bond film. You have to chose 2 new cars for 007 from any brand of your choosing. One has to be a newer car to advertise a new product and the other is to be something vintage pre-80’s. You’ve been allocated a budget of 400k for both cars.

2 car garage entry for Episode 36.
(I am making small edits that I find fitting, the original will be commented below)
You are the chef extraordinaire of Porto Cervo. Having worked all your life for sparsely little, you have finally earned yourself a good living- owning 3 of the ritziest restaurants in the area.
You have 400.000 euros (300.000 more than you have in your bank account ) to buy two cars. The first, a 4 four door belter that goes completely under the radar of your wife- who you plan to leave for someone half her age.
The other is for you to enjoy on the weekends you aren’t in the kitchen. You don’t want something that is necessarily scary fast or brand new- but something that will keep you honest if you misbehave.
It would be nice if you could get out of them one day, without having lost money- but not at the cost of getting what you want.

The fun thing about the jump the shark metaphor is that it is used to describe when something reaches its peak and fails. When Fonzie jumped the shark it was in season 5, they went on to make 6 more seasons, so it isn't a great metaphor for failure at all...

Two car garage: you’re a Hollywood film director in the late 2000s ready to take on the mantle of filming the greatest practical car chase in film history, attempting to top the likes of Bullitt, Ronin and The Spy Who Loved Me. You need to choose 2 understated yet powerful sports saloons that stylistically fit into the gritty vibe of a European action thriller film. The chase is set in a busy metropolis before finishing on the wide open-road, so something nimble for the city streets with a powerful V8, V10 or V12 is key. This being a Hollywood blockbuster, the studio has given you a generous budget of £250,000 to spend for both cars.

Neils statement on TopGear only talking about EVs etc is upsettingly accurate. I recently went on holiday, did the traditional stock up on car mags, sat down on my sun lounger, picked up TopGear mag, flicked through (as you do, back to front to assess the pics first), immediately put it down and picked up Evo. I won’t buy TopGear mag again, ever.

    Two Car Garage Suggestion:
As a 45 year old, and newly devoiced, I find my self with considerable more time on my hands because I only have the kids ever-other week.
The devoice now being in the rearview mirror, a tidy sum of £50,000 is sitting in my skyrocket.
Car no. 1 - something ULEZ compliant is needed, that has space for the kids, and cater for the sun/winter trips to the French alps. Plus offer a bit of style/sex appeal for when I am back in the game…
Car no. 2 - now feels like the time to fulfil the dream of owning a car from the 80s that I never could afford when I was a teenager/early twenties. However, I would like a car that I could modify in my newly found free time, but still be able to drive to and from the odd track day throughout the year (importantly, not a car that will show up my lack of talent on a track).

  • @jammakid
    @jammakid 8 месяцев назад

Love the show - glad to have you back.
    Two car garage -
    1. You have £1k /month to lease a car through your vat registered business (bearing in mind co2 as you don't want an outrageous tax bill at the end of the year). It doesn't need to to be a family car but has to be able to get 2 youngish kids in it if you have to do a school run.
    2. You have £50k to spend on a family car which will need fit in the 2 kids and a hungarian vizsla for dog walks in the country, and it will also occasionally need to take the family on 600 mile round trips for Cornwall holidays. It needs to be at least 18 months inside its manufacturers warranty.

On "spending $400m for the Vegas GP" thing, I have a different view: If FOM can pull off the Vegas race on $400m, it's very good value for money. It always cost that amount of money to build an F1 track. Shanghai's F1 track cost $350m to build. That was based on China's labor cost 20yrs ago. To do it in 2023, in US, in Vegas, for $400m, is kind of impressive.

Great to have you back guys...next time give us addicts a bit of notice before you disappear so that we can arrange Friday therapy sessions 🤣
BMW i8 ....are you serious TG?
Reverse Tardis can be a good thing in certain (nonautomotive) areas of life?!
Most annoying ergonomic failure - any car with the bonnet release on the passengers side!
F1 for me is now reduced to watching a YT 4 minute highlights....I just cant waste any more time on it.
Two car garage - main car R129 or R230 SL500, great , beautifully engineered practical mile munchers. Classic cabriolet Triumph Stag, (best restored car you can find). Both have really good Hardtops for the midge season. Manish's 300 ME is a good call, but NOT a cabriolet which the brief stated, BTW the original Peter Bohanna vehicle displayed at the Racing Car Show (I was there in 72) had a Maxi engine and gearbox, before AC took the project over.

    2 car garage.
South of Ireland roads, so quite bumpy - nothing to stiff or it will feel very crashy. You love a hot hatch but would like to stand out at a car meet so nothing too generic.
You commute to the capital once a week so a motorway cruiser is essential but something interesting enough to keep you awake and possibly tempt you to take the backroads home every once in a while.
Budget is a FIRM (you hear that cooper!) 20k euros.

Interesting fact. My old boss invented one of the systems rail systems and is also connected with the automotive industry.... probably can't elaborate further on that one.
The handguard surrounding the barrel of an AR-15 that appears to be ventilation is another system. The most popular of which is M-Lok.

Going to bore you with a fact about the SAAB key... In the 70s/80s SAAB did research into crashes and realised that people were smashing their kneecaps in the key causing the kneecap to shatter. They therefore decided to move it into the centra console where as you all pointed out it need to be in reverse to release, this made it incredibly difficult to access and damage the ignition barrel to steal the car.
I always thought it was quite nice ergonomically especially if you have a lot of keys on your keyring :)

My submission for Two Car Garage: He’s 35, married with a 2 year old daughter, his father raced a Sprite in the 70’s and our man grew up watching the hey day of Formula Ford. He’s finally able to start racing and has bought a lovely Reynard 84F with plans to run the Champion of Brands in ‘24. After purchasing the race car and trailer our man has 25,000 to spend on a vehicle that can tow the race car, haul the young family to town and the seaside and pass for acceptable in the company parking lot. GO!

Glad you’re back! Oh how we’ve missed you.
Anyway here’s a 2 car garage that should make you think outside the box.
You’ve favourite period in time is the mid 80’s to the mid 90’s and you have a penchant for the quirky. You have a limited budget of £30,000 to buy 2 vehicles, a daily driver that has to be a family car. The other can be anything rare (possibly imported) and something to take to coffee run.
Both vehicles must be from 1985-1995 and be quirky and give you a buzz when driving, but also get nods of appreciation from fellow petrolheads.

Every single one of Cooper’s cars of the thirty years are bang on.
If you were going to choose a hybrid it’d have to be a Prius.

Two car garage idea based off a recent experience. You have a budget of £100,000 to buy two cars for two separate trips with you and your partner. The first trip is a drive from the south west of England to Marseille to watch the rugby and the second trip is from the same start point to Lille remembering that the cars have to fit your luggage for the trips and two comfortably. This was a recent trip by my parents and the cars they took where A Porsche 997 Turbo Sport Chrono manual for the first one and a Mercedes R129 Sl 320 Auto on the second. No restrictions on country of origin just the budget.

PLEASE do not do away with the music section. I have learned so much from Manish, and experienced such emotions...everyone else's suggestions are great too, I've been getting into ZZ Top, and love all the quirky 80s pop songs from the others.
Also may I request an 'after dark' episode where everyone's on the booze and slagging off EVs?

The Saab ignition down by the gears/hand break was there to stop keys ending up in your knees in head on collision, so DL your point about why not having the key next to the steering wheel is explained by Saab design.

56:16 The Saab key placement was initially (70s, I think) to prevent your knee from getting stabbed by it in the case of an accident, something they just kept for the sake of being different!

I’ve had three 320d’s and now have a FWD 118d which I really like. Plus it has the right combination of touchscreen and buttons. It all just works

Two car garage: collecting cars has introduced the 5 year 50k mile bumper to bumper warranty which can be applied to any car purchased on the site for $6k.
You are a man in your mid 20’s who works from home and volunteers with a Greyhound rehoming non-profit in the evenings requiring you to drive dogs around the country semi frequently. On the weekends you race in the hot hatch championship in your Honda civic race car which requires you to tow your car to tracks around the UK.
You have 25k to spend on two cars, one of which needs to be your new daily driver. The cost of the warranty must be factored into your budget, IF you decide to purchase it for one (or more) of your vehicles.

I understand Ed's pet peeve with the FWD BMWs but I have to say the 128ti is brilliant. However, the original 1-series has more "driving pleasure" cooked into it for sure. Due in large part of course to the RWD.

2 Car Garage. A nice English lady marries an American. They are deeply in love and both of them decide they want to buy the other a car. She wants to buy him what the English think is the perfect American car and separately, he wants to buy her what an American thinks is the perfect English car. They has $25,000.00 each and neither knows the other is car shopping. Thanks for a great show. Pat. New Hampshire USA

Here you go lads, 2 car garage.
Chris Cooper can come up with the narrative of who might be in the need for these 2 cars.
    1) A petrol SUV that ticks as many boxes as possible (interested to see what Chris Harris picks 😂). For under 55k.
    2) An early 2000's hot hatch for under 10k.

Two car garage with also an idea to chat about past F1 drivers alongside the currently format. You and your wife and dog are planning a trip from the South, through Mid Wales to North Wales for a 4 day break in two cars including a track day for one car on Anglesey (as you are meeting the team there). On the way you want to visit Tom Pryce’s home and small memorial (F1 link). You want it to be make you feel special car to you, good on road and track but nothing two expensive (I did it my old gen 1 Evora). Your wife goes onto the cottage you have booked just outside Abersoch where you join her later but she won’t drive around the narrow lanes so you’ll be doing the driving around the area with her and the dog. Vehicle has to be able to navigate the lanes and also fit in with the visiting wealthy set (by being cool) that have holiday homes there. Budget say £70k

Saab's key placement was a safety feature. In a crash the key can jam into your knee when placed behind the steering wheel.

Two car garage - carrying on from Aberdeen mentioned on this episode. Husband and wife, £30k budget, one car for commuting Banchory to Aberdeen preferably SUV (bigger the better) with minimal servicing/run costs for 2/3 years for wife and one classic car for classic car enthusiast husband. Classic car must be suitable for taking daughter, Penelope, to nursery and Sunday drives around Royal Deeside with the family and dog. Classic car can have some tinkering required to satisfy the inner mechanic
