Oscar nomination, calling it right now.
Now whether he wins, that's a different story. But this may be one case where the Academy is forced to recognize it, regardless of the performer not having died. I can kinda see why they would go for a more dramatic movie, if that's the case. If they did a conventional superhero movie, the Academy could just excuse it away as being, "ah, it's just another superhero movie". But if it's just a straight up dramatic movie, they're out of luck.
It's too early to tell, but Warner Bros may be trying to force their hand, by forcing them to give them yet another Oscar (they already have one for 'Suicide Squad', for makeup).

Meh. It's an interesting subject. People are always wondering when the next big superhero/comic book movie is that the Academy will recognize, and finally take home a major win. Personally, I don't think it'll happen. And I don't give watch the Oscars, anyway.
But it makes for a nice conspiracy theory, to imagine that Warner might be trying to intentionally provoke them. It's also the "comments" section, not the "say one line and you're done" section. :-P
@@PyramidHead316 I'm not too well versed in the comic book world, or even the super hero world of film these days, but while many super-hero films had a heavy emphasis on the villain, often to the point of their origin, I cannot think of a single film where the VILLAIN was the entirety of the film, and this looks like it. It could be shocking frankly. I just can't think of a better trailer though, and I just hope that the trailer isn't ten times better than the movie. Jimmy Durante's "Smile" puts a very haunting sound to it.
So anyway, while the Academy may want to ignore it and wrongly want to think of it as just another super-hero movie, it's probably anything but, because it's about a villain, and that villain, as far as villains go, isn't even super, but can be very interesting nonetheless. I am sensing there's an enormous amount of sadness that will come his way, because of something that will happen to his mother - that will be the snapping point, and we may see the police totally ignore her case, etc. This trailer is setting this way up, because there's too much time being spent on somebody which in movies is usually just a background role. He quotes her, he doses her in the tub, and he dances with her. It's a big setup for her being the snapping point, as she will be treated cruelly too, at some point at least. I'm sure enough of it, that I would be more surprised, given there could be so many things that could make him snap, if it weren't the case, than if it were.
The 2 trailers are oscar worthy alone.

I totally agree that Joaquin's performance may rival Heath Ledgers, not only the setting of the story line but also it's Joaquin Phoenix. One of the things people rarely mention in the reactions is that Joaquin and Heath were friends in real life and respected one another's work. It's bittersweet, and I can't help if he felt more motivated to do a harder more intense role NOT to be better than Heath but to pay respect to the character to honor the amazing job Heath accomplished. I can't wait for this!

This movie was directed by Todd Phillips the same guy who directed The Hangover. He wanted to stick his hands into drama thus this movie was born. Juaquin Phoenix is playing a very detailed in depth character and he nails it everytime. This is a filmakers movie. Most of the audience might not get it. But I honestly have no doubt this movie will kick ass.
He is gonna kill it as the joker. I get chills when I watch this trailer.

This movie is not trying to rival Heath, it's trying to revere him.
This movie shows what happens when society doesn't take mental anguish and instability seriously, and it leads to tragedy.
The same reason why, the same way, we lost Heath Ledger.

I would say to compare Jokers isn't fair to any actor, other then Jared, but Jack, Heath, even Hamel in there own way do justice to what could be and is the Joker and that's what makes the character so amazing.

It did rival it. You were right. Heath was incredible and deserved the oscar he got. But Heath had about 25 min of screentime and as you said, was already the joker. Joaquin carried the entire movie....2+ hours from start to finish and his performance, in my opinion, was top notch. So not sure if its a fair comparison but Joaquins story of the Joker has never been done before. Never gotten a 2.25 hour long movie of just the jokers transformation and it was incredible.

The best thing about this movie is it shows his origin story...his "rise and fall" in to insanity and future established mindset. Joker needed a standoff movie for people to not only see him as a villain, but as a man, who was shown not only pain but love as well and chose the side he wanted to serve. An innocent person who endured pain and undeniable hardships that shaped him. Every other time we have seen the joker in any other movie he has already been an established character.

Joaquin does not mess around ~ literally one of the best scenes ever was that "your faults as a son is my failure as a father" scene between Richard Harris and Joaquin in Gladiator. Even as a young actor, Joaquin went toe-to-toe with Harris. Genius.
I know these take time to make and that you guys wouldn't skip so I didn't say anything, but I think the reason people got anxious is when this trailer dropped, you guys released a bunch of reaction videos on or around the same day. So I'm sure a lot of people were expecting this to be in the lineup and when it wasn't people got anxious. I'm just happy it's here. Keep up the good work.

If anyone is smiling over this its probably Ledger, he was friends with Phoenix and this has the same dark vibe as Ledger's Joker. Phoenix will for sure do this version of the Joker justice.
