My first pen and computer was a Windows CE device in the 1990's. Yet in all that time I've used paper and pens to take and keep my notes. It turns it it was for good reason. After more than 40 years of experimenting and searching you have helped me find a replacement for pen and paper. Great series of videos.
In the entire learning/creating/producing cycle to become a master of one's craft it is important to be be able to explain to others. To do that one must write and one must edit what one writes. That is where learning is finally solidified, that is where learning and creativity make one a master. I think you need to do a video or two on where the pen ends and the keyboard takes over.

I love this video. Since I started using a computer in 1978 I by default typically want to use a keyboard. I do have a surface pro and feel very good when I sit down with the pen and start writing notes and drawing diagrams. I have also found that I retain information much better when I write it with a pen.

You are so right... I want to learn more how to use my pen on my surface pro 6. I don't work outside of home. But I like to take notes church. My typing us not fast to keep up. But still uncomfortable using the pen because I don't practice enough. And One Note I really like. So I just need to practice at home. Thank you for encouraging video.

Fantastic overview of the computer input device issue, and certainly makes me reconsider my current keyboard-dominated usage. I used to work in graphics (I no longer do so professionally, but still occasionally dabble for hobby or interest based projects) and always thought the best way to do that work would have been with a pen directly on a *large* screen. But the tech was nowhere near mature enough at the time, 10-15 years ago. I'm somewhat envious of people who are young enough that this will be second-nature to them in the future. But it's going to take some considerable societal and institutional work to overcome the inertia of keyboard/mouse usage to enable that future. That's where a channel such as this can be so important. Great job!

Super intresting ideas in this video! I agree with this that pen is a thinking tool. We try to push Teams Room Content cam for this reason. To be able to run effective remote meetings with pen and collaborative thinking. aain a great video!

Great video, as previously stated I use my pen all the time on my Surface Go and my Ipads. My wife is a former teacher, she listened in and totally agreed. She stated even worst that in her school, because of the keyboards kindergarteners and 1st graders were not developing the skill to even use or hold a pen or pencil. I personally have always got more from a whiteboard when planning and coaching. I use the MS Whiteboard all the time now. Keep this great content coming!

Whiteboard is great! I haven't figured out how to incorporate it into my teaching but I might. There are similar collaborative features in OneNote, too.

This series is great. I just started using my surface pro to take notes this year in onenote as a student and I can feel I am more organized and it is overall a much better experience already

That was my experience as well. I went back to school in 2014 and used a Samsung tablet to take my notes and to do most of my reading. Almost no heavy textbooks, and all my notes and homework were in one place. OneNote and modern Windows machines just make everything much easier, as they can do both the note-taking and organization as well as full desktop functionality - and I need both.

I have embraced the pen on my Surface Go. I downloaded all of the manuals l teach from as a PDF and l write the answers and teacher’s notes on them. It is great to have one device and not carry around 6 manuals. I find myself wanting to write more using the device. I even fill out rubrics for my student’s work. Other workmates are surprised when l show them what l have done. They are also interested in doing the same.

This is another great installment! Oviatt's work sounds very interesting. As I've mentioned before, to address Oviatt's "paradox" I tell my students all the time that taking notes using a pen is better for learning, especially the subjects I teach (all economics). But I think it's not just about the mode of note-taking: In my observation, having a clamshell laptop open at your desk is just a massive distraction waiting to happen. It's begging for a chat window, RUclips, Insta, or other classes' work! Students need to understand that their own attention is their most valuable asset.
Looking forward to your next installment! I really think this will be a very valuable series to people all around the world going forward.

I came from pen & paper, I can read a story, etc... until the cows come home, but with me I have trouble absorbing it now. Thinking back to children's books with pictures in my early years & reading material now would make it easier for some to comprehend when shown. I myself have trouble seeing it in my head, until it is written down or pictured (described).
Old dog, hard to learn new tricks. ( Windows 11 I.E ......Here we go again!!!) Not everyone is a Wiz-kid that gets it in 2 seconds. Thanks for this video.

The best option overall is using pen and keyboard at the same time, so one can quickly change between different input methods and combine the best of 2 worlds. In this way graphics tablets are still superior to any comvertible like the surface. There is a fundamental and principal problem with convertibles that people tend to overlook when they buy these products.
Draw a Diagramm and scetch something then type the an explanation underneath it, which is faster. Write important questions by pen. Then some formulas, then change for mathinput and Unicode math, which you can't do efficiently without a keyboard.

Pens are great for productivity, but I'm not really interested in buying into the whole Apple luxury brand ecosystem. I have enough super brands to deal with already!

@@oztabletpc For once I have to disagree. Apple as a manufacturer now has 2 different pens and iPads in so many flavours from very expensive to really good value. even the cheapest iPad now support pen input and non Bluetooth keyboard accessories. I clould even argu e that Surface is the luxury brand here.

In my experience, in terms of note taking, the Surface Pen vs. Apple Pencil are about the same, except the Surface Pen has an eraser end that is extremely useful. As for software, personally I'd only use OneNote on either of them!

    • @gyozakeynsianism
      @gyozakeynsianism 3 года назад +2

@Hasse Edqvist I think you're right about this. Low-end iPads are the one place where Apple really does offer good value: A cheap-ish tablet with good battery life + pen support. That's something that is generally lacking in Windows land. However, you can get decent Samsung tablets with really great pen experiences for cheap - and again, you can use OneNote.

@@driver288 yes, true. I have the mini with pencil V1. I sold the Pro with pencil V2. My point is that any Apple device is like a trojan horse. 90% of the innovation Apple do is designed to get you to buy the next iThing. They are brilliant at it, but I think it's a trap. Look at thier latest financial report, 25% increase in services revenue. That's the end game for Apple. Once you have the iPad, iPhone, Watch, Airpods, Mac, Apple TV then you have little resistance to the credit card, TV+, iTunes and Apple Care gambit. It's ruthlessly efficient. And then people get hypnotised to believe that there is no alternative. But one of the things that triggers me about it is the social pressure that comes with all that. Kids and teens label you poor if you don't buy in! I can live without it!
