Is this cheaper option better than the Surface Pen?

- Over the years I've tried lots of Surface Pen alternatives. And I'd almost given up... Until now! This is the first Surface Pen alternative that I'd consider superior to the Surface Pen for note taking.

Precisely the content I was looking for as I'm trying to figure out which new pen to get for my new Microsoft Surface Go 3 that's on the way. Thank you for the concise, thorough, realistic commentary. I am admittedly super envious of your giant Surface Studio!!
Happy Renaisser user here too, it's a lot cheaper than the new Surface Pen and the side eraser button makes a lot more sense for note taking. I'm glad it exists because it means other companies want to get into the Surface ecosystem. Hopefully it will make pen-enabled tablets more common.
This is the video i was looking for. Amazing, thanks!
I am very curious about this pen. I like the fact it has tilt and I'm loving the idea of an eraser button. I find flipping the surface pen 180 very slow and can send it spinning across the room 😂. I like how it's cheaper than the Surface pen and I'm curious about the software included. Thanks for the review!
I got a pen from amazon the company is sky mirror. It seems to have everything you said you wanted in the video, with side button right click and erasing and the magnetic attach, and it comes with 2 interchangeable tips. Its a great pen and works great with my surface go 2
and it turns on and off by itself and its only around 30 dollars
Can't seem to find it here in Australia. Amazon blocks a lot of products for us. Feel free to drop a link here if you have a moment.
What's the name of it
can u provide us with a link pls
I just bought a Rena 520 and can't wait to use it! Personally the reasons you didn't like it are what I liked about it. The fact that I have to turn it on to use it only serves as a reminder to myself that it's truly a stylus and not just some random pen I picked up from around the clinic! You see; I'll be using this device along with my new surface Pro 7 Plus at work while taking notes, jotting down memo's and information about patients that I need to have in order to complete my internship and a lot of the pens used in clinic look similar to these... They don't have buttons of course. Lol. Thanks for making this review and ultimately saving me $70.00 +.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm kind of curious how it feels to draw with it compared to the surface pen. Thanks for being so thorough. I was just about to ask about the pen tip compatiblity.. And you read my mind. Thanks
It's a very similar feel in the hand. It is ever so slightly lighter than the Surface Pen. The same tip too.
I recently lost my surface pen at uni and with a students budget $155 NZD is not something I'm willing to spend, so I'm really glad to hear that good alternatives are out there!
i lost my surface pen as well a couple months back, and I need it badly rn, but spending that much money for another surface pen was something I don't want to do....I hope this pen doesn't disappoint when I buy it today
I like how the eraser tool works when using GoodNotes with the Apple pencil on the iPad. The way GoodNotes works, you can set it up so that you tap an icon on the screen to switch to the eraser, erase what you want, and then it automatically switches back to whatever tool you were using beforehand. So you click the erase icon, erase what you want, and continue. To me it feels very quick and natural, and I miss it when using other applications.
Also, i agree with you, I think it would be awkward to have to turn my pencil around to use the eraser.
Hey there! Thanks for sharing your experience with the Surface Pen alternatives. It sounds like you've been on quite the journey to find the right one for your note-taking needs.
The Raphael520 from Renaiza seems intriguing, especially with its magnetic attachment feature and familiar pen tip. Tilt sensitivity might not be your priority, but it's nice to have as an added bonus. However, the need to manually turn it on and charge it could be a bit inconvenient compared to the Surface Pen.
I'd love to hear more about your experience with the Raphael520. How has it been working for you over time? Have you noticed any other pros or cons that you'd like to share? Your insights could be really helpful for others considering this alternative.
Thanks for the recommendation and your honest review! 🖊✨
If one has used traditionally configured pencils as long as I have, the posterior mount eraser, despite more movement, is much more memory embedded. In my brain to muscle memory!
Yes, that's true. That said, pen tip on glass requires a retraining and it doesn't take long to adapt. I still love the Surface Pen, but this is a good one too.
true..but in my case, we stopped using pencils since 5th grade and have only used pens since then. so the fact that i can erase my text is in itself a big deal for me.
the lenovo precision pen 2 is also pretty good but has no magnetic attachement and can be charged via usb c + has two buttons. you dont have to turn it on and off
Have you gotten a chance to get to the Raphael 530? Looking to get a cheap but decent stylus for my Pro 8 for notetaking at around $40, and not sure whether the 530 is worth the $10 more over the 520C. Would really appreciate it if you could make a followup video, and maybe also compare the 520BT and 530 since they are at the same price point
Yes I'm curious about that comparison also.
I'm looking for a pen that is similar but cheaper than Adonit Ink M. I have recently bought surface Go 2 and I am getting fed up with smudges on the screen and even though I am getting on well with the type cover mouse pad, I would rather use something else. Yes, I could use a mouse but why bother if there is an alternative. The question is whether there is an alternative ...
I already had two of them. Now I am going to buy a third one or the surface pen. The problem with my first one was that I dropped it and I lost the button on the back side. Without the button it wasn't chargeable anymore. The second one just stopped working after a year or so.
I broke the button on one too. ☹️
I bought a Rena pen after this review and to be honest, I found that it is more stable than a regular surface pen, but the surface slim pen beats the Rena pencil for performance and latency, and being able to detect subtle pressure sensitivity differences
I just realized while I preferred the top eraser while what you said does make sense... I tend to annotate with the screen in vertical position (well, more like at an angle), not on a table and I just rotate the wrist to erase, not my fingers, which for me is actually faster than looking for a button to press... I never use the pen on an horizontal screen, but if I did the button makes more sense.. By the way I also have some non surface devices that use a button instead... and for the reason I mention I prefer surface...
Good points, though with the hardware button you learn the feel of it and it eventually becomes muscle memory. Fun fact: The Apple Pencil V2 has a ridiculous implementation of a button eraser.. . It's virtual, with no physical reference and it requires you to let go of the pen to activate. It's so bad ergonomically!
@@oztabletpc Yeah sure, when I used it with my surface pro 3 (which I still have) I got used to it, but I still preferred the new one. Also I like than the new one had only 1 battery and not a separate one for the Bluetooth functions. With my pro 3 and HP X2 elite I use pen loops to have the pen always available... I know about the iPad I have the 11in and hardly ever use the button. Still it's much better than the 1st gen pencil I use with my 2015 12.9 iPad pro and mini 5 (you have it too, if I remember correctly). The new pencil feels much better in terms of size, weight and magnetic connection than gen 1 (I use all my iPads with matte screen protectors that make the pencil feel better). I actually use a screen protector on all my devices, including the Surface Book. Over time I have found a reliable brand that does not compromise the quality of the screen and removes reflections and fingerprints.
@@_Digitalguy cool. What's the screen protector that you use?
@@oztabletpc I use AtFoliX on all my devices now, they have become my favourite brand for this. I don't know if the sell in Australia though...
Great review. I'm not a fan of anything that requires thinking when turning on. Having to explicitly turn on a pen, and having to think about whether it's charged - for a heavy pen user like me, that's a deal breaker. Passive charging (like the Surface Slim Pen) or a replaceable battery that lasts a year (like other Surface pens) are much better.
As for the eraser, I find the eraser button at the back of the Surface Pens to be natural and fast. I don't find I need to be erasing so frequently and with such rapidity that it slows me down. It's also, as you say, "intuitive". If I need a more precise eraser, I'll use the app's UI to select the eraser tool and use the regular pen end of the pen.
Finally, I've become very dependent upon the clicky rear button on the Surface Pen. I launch OneNote, do screen captures and launch Sticky Notes, all using one button attached to my pen. I'm glad the new version of the Renaisser has this, but versions without it would be a no-go for me for this reason alone.
Thanks for your insights. I have a question, is magnetic attachment to the tablet always with a magnet in the pen? What if the tablet body is made of say aluminum or plastic?
Yes, the magnets in the pen are matched to magnets in the tablet.
Thank You
I got the Microsoft pen for 60€ and i would pay that price again with joy because that black surface pro7 with the poppy red pen and keyboard looks amazing ;)
Yeah, that's an awesome combo!
Hi, would you suggest this pen for a Surface Go 2 too? Or are any other better options? I will use it to take notes and study, maybe some CAD drawing. I just don't want to buy the original since the tablet is not mine, I can keep it for max 3 years....would be nice if the pen works with smartphone or other touch devices too ;)
Yes, this works on any current Surface (apart from Surface Laptop Go).
@@oztabletpc Thank you!
I used a Bamboo ink+ for a while with my SP3, and I loved it.
Now I upgraded to a SP7 and it's not the best as it turns itself off quite aggressively.
I might give this pen a shot, as I like the side eraser too.
I just got mine.
It's great, better than the Surface pen for me. Ergonomics wise the Bamboo ink+ is still my favourite, but it has problems with the newer MPP devices.
@Just bought a used SP7, I'm going to give this a try based on your recommendation.
Can you recommend a stylus pen for the surface 3. I understand its an old model but it good enough for what I use it for. I look forward to your suggestion
All of these pens will work on Surface 3.
i have a question my surface pro 4 touch not working can i still use surface pen
I have a question because you are the man when it comes to surface products....how is the surface book 3? Would you recommend it? @ Oztabletpc

Hello,
Can this pen work with Surface Pro 7?
I need to know before i purchase it
Hello, All there pen are capable to write and draw into to a External Touchscreen Monitor but the video and power source connected into a window device or laptop.
Do any of these pens open one note?
I see horrible jagged lines from the 520 successor on a surface 7+ but the machine is second hand and this is the only pen I have ever used with it so I'm not sure if the problem is the pen or the surface. Have you seen jagged lines, particularly when tilted and moving slowly.
Justice at TabletPro channel would be the best person to ask about drawing with these pens.
Hi! I bought the Raphael 530 pen.
In general, the pen works well.
I tried it on different software: 1) in windows WhiteBoard the eraser works too. 2) in Gimp and in Krita the eraser does not work.
None of the Software I have tried recognizes the pen tilt.
How can I enable the eraser in all software?
How can I activate the pen tilt?
The eraser needs to be recognized by the software, so if your software doesn't recognize it you should contact the vendor or developer. And it doesn't look to me like the Raphael 530 supports pen tilt. Again tilt is only recognized in apps that support it. A simple way to test it is in Word with a pencil tool.
Thank you mate, I have been looking for a Microsoft Pen for a while as my old one got stolen while I was in school and my parents don't want to waste money on a pen I need this for note taking in class and I Like to play tetris in class When I want to waste time lol but thanks for reviewing this pen and You deserve a lot more subscribers then you do you actually give knowledge and don't waste time Thank you for making this video mate have a good day.
There's something deeply wrong with your parents if they don't want to spend money on a pen for you to take notes in school, I mean what's the purpose of having an surface then
@@maya_void3923 well I have one now I was out of town for medical nothing bad but it was the perfect time to buy a pen there is nothing wrong with my parents of cause no one is perfect but if there is anything wrong with anyone it is me lol but using the pen on the surface go 2 which is the tablet / laptop I use is really useful I really like it
@@NoLifeGamingOfficial from what you said I still think there's something wrong with your parents because if you use your surface to take notes it's like your notepad, and it's their responsibility to provide tool for you to learn, that's the law and they are breaking it for no reason. and I didn't noticed that there's anything wrong with you, Im glad you finally have the pen, I buyed surface pro 6 cheaply on eBay but it comes without a pen and now I'm tryin to find best pen to buy for it, I'll be using it to sculpt in 3d and draw so its supposed to be best experience but I don't wanna spend so much munsy as I already made my bank account absolutely empty
@@maya_void3923 well it's personal but not some shitty crazy reason I think I know what it is
@@maya_void3923 well I do live in australia so the laws are different a little bit and my parents did not want to waste 175$ Aud on something that is going to go missing in like 6 months which happened with the previous pen as it got stolen along with my mouse lol but that does not matter also I kinda of stopped asking until the right time to get one with the highest possibility of them saying yes to getting one which worked
I can't figure out how to turn it off. I can't make it turn on OneNote with one click.
Thanks
this is a great pen. Justice did his homework on this one.
Except that this Renaisser pen sufferrs from random Interference jitter.
Does the button do lasso select?
My sp 3 pen buttons stopped working. Top button to turn on OneNote was one of them. Heavy sigh. I very had it for years but am not sure button's ever worked. No led lights up after a long press either. Still points, drags and highlights but I miss my buttons.
In this video you'll see how to change the Bluetooth button batteries in the Surface Pro 3 pen: ruclips.net/video/GhPRtdt_duE/видео.html
That will make the top button work again.
I guess everyone has their own preference, but I much prefer the eraser on the other end of the pen. It's not a matter of efficiency of movement, it's a matter of how much you have to think about it and how fiddly it is. The little button on the side method? That requires you to hold the pin at a certain orientation and when you have fat fingers it's hard not to press that button accidentally, but when you do need to press the button I can't just move a finger, I have to reposition the whole pin. It's sooooo much easier to flip the pin over, erase, flip the pin back, and keep writing.
Will Apple pencil 1 alternatives will work on Surface 3 or is there any cheap alternatives? looks like this pen costs almost half of an used Surface 3
Apple stuff only ever works work Apple. Renaisser did make a pen that had both Apple Pencil and Surface Pen tech inside.
will this work with the HP Spectre x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-f1000?
is there a pen which also has a mouse right click functionality.?? i use an HPx360 with HP pen---- it has the two buttons, no eraser. one button is set to eraser and the other set to screenshots because those are two things i do very often. planning to get a surface pro sometime later. would go for the surface pen or 520, but while i have been using the hp pen, i have come across this situatiion many times when i need to right click, and long press with pen does it, but its not very precise. i wish i could hover the stylus over whatever icon i wanted to right click then click the right click button. also, in onenote, i often switch between pen and lasso tool. is there a pen where ican program the button to that as well? so basically the summary of what i am looking for:-
1. right click button everywhere
2. lasso tool in onenote
3. screenshot everywhere
4. pressure sensitive.
Those features are from the Wacom AES pen drivers. So you can find that feature on your X360, some Dell and Lenovo 2 in 1s too. But it's not possible currently on Surface and devices with MPP (N-Trig) pens.
@@oztabletpc You can use the Pen Tool in the Microsoft Store app to remap the side buttons on the Surface Pen (and alternatives) to do that, it also enables hover right click. www.tabletpro.com/penapp
Hi. Thanks for review. Does it have haptic feedback?
Only the Surface Slim Pen 2 has haptic feedback at this stage.
@@oztabletpc Thanks. Now a day does this one still the best alternative to Surface Pens or you have other recommendations? Thanks in advance and hi from Spain.
@@clarenceg.7789 Renaisser 530 is still a good alternative to a regular Surface Pen. If you have a Pro 8 or 9 you can't beat the Slim Pen 2.
@@oztabletpc OK thanks for your help. KR
Siento no hablar español. ¡El traductor de Google debería ayudar! El lápiz renaisser sigue siendo una buena opción y está cerca de la función del Lápiz para Surface. Creo que también hay una nueva versión 530 disponible. Todo lo mejor con tu compra.
How do you keep the page from going to landscape when you're in the other direction? This is what keeps me from using my pen. I have the Surface pro6. I love my pen otherwise
Hi Brenda, what app are you using? Do you want to write in Portrait mode - like a notebook?
Use Rotation Lock. It might be available as a button to toggle in Action Center. You can also access it in Settings > Display > Rotation lock
This works for surfase pro 7?
But does it work on Windows 11? My surface pen doesn't work at all so it is now basically a $100 toothpick.
Still can't find UK store such a shame
Wacom has had an eraser on the other end of the pen long before lol
Is the first pen (The uogic note pen) compatible with a Lenovo Yoga laptop? The laptop is windows 10 home and i just received the pen in the mail, and i dont know how to connect it to my laptop. Im starting to think it isnt compatible with it at all.
There are lots of Lenovo Yoga models, so I can't really tell much from your comment. That said, most Yoga's that had pen capability used one of the Wacom pen systems, which are different to the Microsoft system (MPP). You need to check your model to find out if it supports a pen, then do a little bit of research to find out what type of pen system it uses.
@@oztabletpc I have one more question. How did you connect the uogic pen to the electronic once unboxed? Did the tip immediately start working on the surface of the electronic or did it connect via Bluetooth or some other way? I think this could help me out to figure things out.
None of these pens use Bluetooth for pen functions. If you have the right pen, they work immediately.
Have you ever tried the Alogic Active Stylus Pen?
No, but it looks like a rebrand of the Renaisser pens.
So why no EURO links?
Great video mate.. Does this one support galaxy tab??
Hey do you have any idea will it work with moto g70 lte tablet
Does the manufacturer advertise active pen support? If not then it is highly unlikely.
Does it work on non-surface & non-apple devices?
Yes, there are many other devices that use the Microsoft Pen Protocol (fromerly known as N-Trig). This pen would work on any of those. A current example is the espresso Portable display that I reviewed recently. ruclips.net/video/0KINo4tlOmk/видео.html
Love ur intro , lol
Does it work in any smartphone?
It would work on Surface Duo 1 or 2. This is an active pen, not a touch screen stylus. Most phones do not support active pens.
Does this work with Microsoft surface pro 6
Yes
Thats a big ass box for a pen.
Please be aware that the Renaisser pen suffers from random interference jitter, while the Surface Pen has none on recent Surface devices like the SP7.
I had to reluctantly go back to the Surface Pen, since I really liked to have 2 side buttons.
Hey John, can you share what you are referring to? I am in direct contact with the Renaisser people so if you can define the problem in more detail I can see if it's a defective stylus or if it's something that can be improved
I love this pen
Thanks for review, honestly after watching this video I feel like betrayed by Microsoft for paying 3 times more
This Renaisser pen suffers from interference jitter, while the Surface Pen had none, on the the latest Surface devices.
@@JohnSmith-gb8hd hey John, can you share what you are referring to? I am in direct contact with the Renaisser people so if you can define the problem in more detail I can see if it's a defective stylus or if it's something that can be improved
What is this huge touch screen screen that you call it "studio"?
Yes, it is the Surface Studio 2.
0:55 was that engineer being disingenuous and self-aggrandising, or were they just woefully ignorant when they had no reason to be?
As Wacom have had erasers/rubbers on the backs of quite a few of their digital pens for many years now.
That's true, we were using them on Wacom Penabled devices 20 years ago. But you have to acknowledge that the design is far more pencil eraser like than Wacom ever was...
And you never have to sharpen it.
