And, platform agnostic!! The only bad thing in one note it’s that you can’t set a paper size like an A4 for example, you are stuck with the almost infinte white background, and this is a problem if you wanna print your notes.

    • @alus992
      @alus992 4 года назад +69

Also ink/pen style (?) is mediocre at best. It's super artificial and doesn't mimic real ink at all so someone who want to do fully handwritten notes can be put off by it. If you could use some tool to crop or outline print sections in this infinite whiteboard to make it more print friendly and customize ink/pen style OneNote would be #1 note taking app for many many people.

TIP: If you want to avoid the horror of text boxes overlapping, create just one text box. When you want to add content, go to the last line and use cursor to move down. That way you can stay in the same text box.
One Note has an infinite canvas and if you ever hope to export your notes to PDF, you have to be careful how wide you make your notes.
I use One Note on my Mac all the time and it gets really annoying because double click&drag doesn't select by word as it does in most word processing apps. I have sent several messages to Microsoft One Note feedback, but still nothing.
I also miss links from One Note to other apps. One Note creates really cumbersome links that point to One Drive and there are very few apps that are able to open One Note and show the note when clicking a link created in One Note. Most just open a browser. And web version of One Note is not very useful...
Other than that, using One Note on Mac, iPad and iPhone is quite fun. I still have a long way to go with 5GB free One Drive storage I got when creating a new outlook.com login for starting One Note.

I absolutely agree, I like the design and usability of both Onenote and Notion, but in both cases, you don't own the software your using. Not to mention that if you look at the privacy policy for any of these major companies, all you your notes can be read by anyone at the company who feels like it, without your consent. At the risk of sounding like an ad, I'm going to stick with Joplin for a while, it's getting features faster than major notetaking apps/programs, while giving me control over my notes, where they are stored, and who has access to them. #opensource

Disagree actually, quite like this concept away from "Get off my property!". If you buy an SSD hard drive now, in 5 years it'll be too small and may no longer live. Same with operating systems and apps, all once bought and outdated. The only thing against it is that you create should remain yours: stopping an Office 365 subscription should not mean you lose access to all notes that are then deleted.

    • @andrewadams8601
      @andrewadams8601 4 года назад +5

OneNote is free and comes installed automatically on Windows 10, or you can download it for free from the Windows Store. Additionally, you can still buy Office 2019 and this includes the desktop application version of OneNote (vs the Windows 10 app). The Office 2019 perpetual license (meaning your license doesn't expire) unlocks local notebook support so you don't have to save OneNote notebooks in the cloud. This means that there is a way to avoid paying a subscription, and you don't have to use the cloud if you don't want to, but you do lose a lot of the features that would come with a Microsoft 365 subscription. Additionally, if you buy the perpetual license (Office 2019), you only get what's available at that time. You don't get the updated features that are available to the subscription plan. That's fine for some people, but others would prefer to pay a little more over time through subscriptions to always stay up to date and have the latest features be available.

Years ago, while in grad school, I would scan copies of my book from my scanner directly into OneNote and use the OCR built in to OneNote to copy everything into a text file. Then when we would have an open book test, we would just search for the terms associated with the test question.

You can get A4 pages off onenote 2016 but this only works for a single page which usually isn't enough space. I guess I could make lots of separate A4 pages, but this makes things messy, having a subsection with pages labelled by their respective number, not to mention having to save them all individually then recombining them into a single PDF.

I want to stop in here to say that I used this setup in reverse: OneNote on my MacBookPro and a Surface Pro 6, so I mainly took notes on the Surface Pro and accessed them on my Mac laptop via the sync. I want to mention that I had sync problems where notebooks refused to show up on the laptop and Microsoft support on this is super, super rudimentary. Sometimes the answer is "well that happens sometimes, re-create your whole notebook." Like, wait, what? There is no solution to this obscure error message and I need to start over? That's not acceptable. Not for Microsoft, especially.
So bear in mind that no solution here is perfect when we're doing cross-platform sync, and Microsoft is *not* (at least, yet) the master of the cloud. Not like Google. You never have such problems with Google products. Unfortunately, Google doesn't have a multipurpose handwriting-enabled note-taking app.

Very much agree with your assessment of OneNote. My history, Years ago I gave OneNote a go, did not like it, so when Evernote started I jumped in; ten years a premium user. Apple greatly improved their Notes app, it is outstanding, so I transferred all my Evernote notes to Apple Notes; OMG such a pain. Yes, I ran Evernote along side of Apple Notes.
Evernote's pricing as structured is getting out of hand. Thus over past few months I began in earnest looking at other note apps quickly settling on OneNote. Though we can access our Apple Notes via the Web, is not the same experience as using a cross platform app such as Evernote and OneNote.
OneNote, for me, is working out better than Evernote. After importing all my Apple Notes to OneNote I deleted all my Apple Notes from iCloud. Being as there are a gazillion documents on both Evernote and OneNote (same-same) I run them together. At my next Evernote renewal I will drop the premium, will exclusively use OneNote. Very much enjoy the editing capabilities of OneNote, clearly beats Evernote. My use of OneNote is on iPhone and iPad, soon moving to Android. EDIT: Aug 2020 purchased Samsung Note 20, OneNote works amazingly well on Note 20.
Very much enjoy your videos; extremely informative and I learn much. Thank you.
FYI: Jealous does not mean what most folks think it means. When one says jealous they truly mean envious or envy. Jealous: feeling or showing suspicion of someone's unfaithfulness in a relationship. Such as "a jealous boyfriend". Remember the phrase "the green eyes of jealousy", it is the fear of losing a significant other to someone else. Now for Envy: a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck.

Jealous: "feeling or showing envy of someone or their achievements and advantages." That's the top definition in the Oxford dictionary. Your definition of jealous is the second definition.

This is a great video Sara. I've found your reviews and opinions insightful. However I was surprised you didn't mention Evernote, and many people in the comments didn't either. I've used Evernote for years on all platforms and it's such a great note taking app. I enjoy how I can update on my iPad and then sync to review my notes on my Samsung Note 9. I was curious why you didn't mention it or maybe I missed you saying something about it in the past.

And you have to search for an old versiòn of One Note just to open your files. 2 in 1’s are great! I recently had my Thinkpad Yoga taken away because the company wanted the word “workstation” on every laptop. I did get another 32GB of memory and a Xeon processor...but, to be honest, my Thinkpad Yoga (P40?...i forget) i7 with 32GB of memory and a decent graphics card was PLENTY fast! And I really loved note taking on that thing using OneNote. The company got what they wanted I guess... but, “we the worker” spent a lot more time in our cubicles just because of heat generation and weight on the new workstations. GO LIGHT if your buying your own! They are PLENTY fast and a lot more versatile.

Finally somebody talks about this app.
I started using it for worldbuilding and then for college stuff, then for my job, and I'm still using it for those three things. The way things can be organized here is insane.
The only thing I don't like about it is the synching, it might as well not have it all. For some reason it doesn't work properly for me, I've tried it several times and it's just a mess when it comes to synching. It's not something that I need, since everything I do with it is at home, but still
Maybe it's because I have a lot of stuff in it, but it doesn't even seem to try to sync at all, even though it's active.

I was once an avid OneNote user back in the Windows Phone days. Eventually, I started to use Android phones and got myself an iPad for school and a main machine that stayed at home. At this time OneNote was really convenient for me since I could use my PC at home and sync my notes to the iPad and my phone. I liked that the app was really robust in terms of features (I liked using shapes for my notes. It helped with things like math and stuff). When I got an Apple Pencil things changed. I started to use Notes because it was more practical to have a better integrated app to the system itself, and I also think that OneNote didn't compare much in terms of using the Pencil and handwriting in general. Today I use Bamboo Paper for handwriting and Notes for more complex stuff since it has better features. I don't worry much because now I use an iPhone too, so all my notes are synced on mobile devices and I can still use iCloud on Windows.
Although, this video inspired me to give OneNote another try. Maybe I'll comeback to using it after all...

Also bad on a MacBook. No chance to export/print to PDF without destroying the layout. Tried to take meeting notes which needed to be shared with other people in the organization and it was a complete fail. Biggest problem of OneNote is the nonexistence of page settings which leads to cluttered PDF exports (at least on MacOS). I know many people love this "endless canvas" but it makes OneNote useless for professional note taking and sharing with people who are NOT using OneNote - in my eyes at least.

I get very frustrated with OneNote because there are so many things that you can't do in formatting that I think is basic. I don't know why they couldn't make the formatting just like in Word. For example you can do bulleted and number lists but you can't do multi-level lists. I find that unbelievable that they didn't add that ability in OneNote since it is a note taking program. As far as I see doing an outline using multi-level lists isn't possible from what I have found.

I'm honestly tempted to do a hybrid note-taking system with Notion and OneNote, because I love writing as if I had a paper notebook on my computer and Notion is absolutely disgusting to use on phone.
Basically if I want organized notes on my phone I'll use OneNote, if I want handwritten notes I'll use OneNote and later I'll just pass it to Notion.

I actually switched from using OneNote on a Surface Book to using Notability on an iPad. It’s not as full-featured as OneNote, but Apple’s algorithm for digitizing handwriting is just so much faster. Also an iPad Pro is much lighter than a laptop.
I would use OneNote on the iPad, since I really like the interoperability of Office 365 and OneDrive, but Microsoft has chosen to not support simultaneous handwriting and audio recording in OneNote on the iPad.
That’s a dealbreaker for me. When I’m taking notes during a class or seminar, I want audio synced to my handwriting. If MS allows that on the iPad, I’ll switch back to OneNote.

After ignoring OneNote for years, I started using it last year for some basic reminders and lists, and simple notetaking if ever needed...
I used it mainly cause it is truly cross platform ( Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android ) and has dark mode on all platforms. (unlike Evernote on windows, which I actually wanted to use)
Little did I know, it would replace almost all my office apps on every platform and would be my daily use app.
I now use it for notetaking, lists, reminders, Audio clips ( for song ideas ), web clipping (thanks to your video), share text within different devices I got, and send these texts to other people who also use OneNote.
