I'm actually the opposite, all my notes are very condensed and I take a lot of 'shortcuts' when I'm writing them down, to the point where my friends always have to ask me what it means. But I understand it and since all the information is in the shortest form possible, it's easier for me to remember.

I had a lecturer for my Spectroscopy module (Chem degree) who, the first lecture we had with her, showed us the feedback she'd received from the two previous years. At the end of the semester, students have to submit anonymous feedback for lecturers and their teaching. She got a top score for the content, but a really low score for lecture flow. She showed us on the slide that most of her feedback was "moves on too fast, can't take notes quick enough and gain an understand the material at the same time". I thought she was going to say "I'm taking this on board and slowing down a bit for this module". No, she showed us all this and then said "well, this is MY lecture, so if you can't keep up, tough". So basically, HUNDREDS of students over MANY years have told her that she goes WAY too fast, and doesn't explain or answer questions (this is compared to all other lecturers they've had for the semester) and she thought that the problem wasn't with her, it was with the other hundreds of people. Needless to say, her module was consistently the one people had their lowest mark on.

Before coming to Canada, I knew that I wanted to be a paperless guy because carrying around notebooks is hard. After you are done school and you wanna check your lecture notes, it is difficult to look for your notebook, so my solution was to buy from my country a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8 with S Pen. It is not the greatest one but it did a pretty nice job and helped me a lot taking my notes, in regards to what app did I use, I used Microsoft one note, which let me access to them on any device (other tablets, laptop or cellphone). I really liked your video explaining this to me, however, this note digital taking became popular latest 2019 and I arrived here in 2018, at that moment was more difficult to find videos like this one explaining and showing note tips.

I'm in high school and i've slowly digitalized my notes this last semester and honestly I love it. I use OneNote and what might be weird is that i write my notes down in class like a normally would and then type them up on OneNote. I love how clean and easy-to read my notes are and by both writing and typing my notes I remember them better. The reason I don't just type my notes in class is because one I don't type that fast and two some classes have a lot of diagrams and it takes a lot of time to draw them in class while trying to keep up with what the teacher is saying. So I'm wondering if investing in an Ipad Pro is worth it and if going completely digital is a good idea? Yes I know it depends on what works best for me but i wanted to see what worked for others before I go buy something I might not need.

OneNote, Office Lens and Word Mobile and Nuten saved my life in university. I started digital note taking on an Asus VivoTab TF810C using OneNote and the included Wacom Penabled stylus on Windows 8, then I downsized to an Asus VivoTab Note 8 for a faster Atom processor and migrated the stylus from my previous Asus tablet because it had an eraser and felt less flimsy than the bundled stylus with the Note 8. I quickly outgrew the Note 8 (even though I bought several on eBay for less than $60), but it was convenient to have three, one with a digital textbook in PDF, one for notes, and a third for ancillary searches, plus a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse all in a small tablet sling as the only things I had to carry to school. I’d often use my iPhone to record the lecture, and take pictures of the whiteboard using Office Lens on my phone as well, because I could send them directly to OneNote and mark them up with additional information (a true lifesaver in math classes, and classes where the professor fills the whole span of whiteboards several times during a lecture).
Towards the end of my university career, I sprung for a used Surface Pro 3, and packed along my three atom tablets to serve as extra screens for PDF textbooks (which I could highlight and annotate using the stylus). The Surface Pro 3 actually had enough power to convert handwritten notes to text almost instantly, which is why I upgraded (plus the Wacom stylus devices have a 5/8” dead zone around the margins of the screen where the pen is completely inaccurate, but the nTrig stylus on the Surface Pro 2+ line doesn’t have this failing). Still used Office Lens to take pictures and send them to OneNote.
Most insane use of all of this was a history class where we only had a midterm essay and a final essay to be submitted in writing in a bluebook. We were allowed one, double-sided, 4”x6” note card. So I converted all my handwritten notes to text and organized them in a table in 6pt Arial with a photo of the timeline the professor wrote on 24’ of whiteboard across the bottom. The professor was so impressed with my note card after the final (it stood out having been printed 8”x6”, folded in half, and then laminated), that he asked if I would email him a copy of my notes to use as lecture notes for the next quarter (which was easy since all I had to do was export my OneNote binder as a PDF and attach it to an email).
I also made heavy use of Word Mobile on my iPhone to write papers for my classes, since I could sit on the lawn, bus, or while walking around while typing on my phone. I wrote dozens of research papers in this fashion while swapping between my OneNote app and my Word Mobile app. Using the Share function it’s easy to send entire web pages or PDFs to OneNote which works similarly to Print To OneNote on Windows or Mac OS, with the added benefit of having a link automatically included on the bottom of the page (perfect for bibliographic entries at the end of the paper).
I also used Nuten, which is a scientific and mathematical keyboard that exports to your Camera Roll as a PNG that you can embed into Word documents, a lot for chemistry and physics reports in collaboration with other students in my group because it was more convenient for me to properly format equations.
In actuality, if a student only had an iPhone, and could type decently fast one the keyboard, installing Office Lens, OneNote, Word Mobile, Acrobat Reader DC, and Nuten would be sufficient to take good lecture notes, carry PDFs of textbooks (and highlight and annotate them), do research (and organize it in a virtual binder in OneNote), and write papers (and format them properly), as long as they had a decent data plan. Adding an inexpensive fine-point active stylus could even bring handwriting into the mix. Plus I’d also suggest adding Voice Notes app to the mix and a decent Bluetooth headset to place closer to the podium for better sound quality for recording lectures. I’ve even taken things one step further and written Wolfram notebooks for Calculus on my phone using the Wolfram Cloud app complete with plots of mathematical functions and their derivatives. And used the PowerPoint app, my Lightning to HDMI output adapter (also great for watching Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video from my iPhone via the projector and speakers in empty classrooms), and my Apple Watch as a presentation remote for presentations in communications classes (complete with virtual laser pointer via the phone screen).

Oh, and as far as PDF copies of textbooks are concerned, there is usually no “legal” way to obtain one that I know of, I’ve bought digital textbooks from the company, and they’re usually tied to locked down app with crappy DRM that needs to phone home to the mothership every time you load the textbook in order to make sure you have permission to use it, which is completely shitty for something that costs as much as a physical copy of the textbook.
My usual workaround is to email the professor before the start of the quarter to see what previous versions of the textbook are acceptable (which is quite often the case, since textbook companies often roll-in the errata from the previous edition into the new one, reorder some chapters, and give the textbook a new styling and cover, then slap on a hefty price tag), buy a used textbook online ( I use bookfinder4u.com to search for the ISBN of the target textbook and sort the results by price), saw the spine off with my friend’s table saw and scan the entire thing to PDF using the auto document feeder on the scanner at the university library, run the whole thing through OCR, add bookmarks for chapters and headings using an old copy of Acrobat Pro 9 I bought for cheap at Half-Price Books, and I have a “legal” unencumbered by DRM copy of the textbook I can distribute to all of my devices for usually less than $10 and a couple of hours work.
I hole punch the original, slap it in a binder with section dividers, and I can often sell it to an underprepared student on the first day of class for what I paid for it plus a $5 lunch at Little Caesar’s. I get fed, the other student saves money, and we’re both satisfied. Win-win!

Some things I thought I think are worth mentioning:
    One Note:
-It supports pressure sensitivity, so your strokes get thicker the more pressure you add. This makes your handwriting ten times better and more paper like
    - It also has a really good lasso tool which does exactly what the goodnote lasso tool does.
    - You can change your paper type, that means you get lined or boxed pages
-It's really good to import pics and pdfs to write notes on.
About the iPad and apple pencil thing:
    - Don't get an iPad Pro, it is super expensive especially for people who won't be using the hell out of it.
    - A great alternative is the iPad 6, has exactly half of all the features of the iPad Pro, and it supports Apple Pencil. This makes it really good for people using it for hobbies/studying. Also, it's half the price at $329.
-If you're a college student, Apple has a really good student discount over its products!

You say you don’t stylise your notes but seriously they look neat and cool. Using OneNote and Notability seems like the perfect fit for me. A lot of my studies include reading research papers. When reading after I got the gist of say a paragraph or a section, i take a screenshot of the same, paste it in OneNote and write what I think about it, simplify the equations/theorems and proofs on the right, that infinite paper really helps my use case, and when I taking notes in class or from an online lecture, Notability really shines through. Sadly neither of them support in built bookmarks or outline of pdfs (yet), so it is a bit heart breaking to go to other apps just to read books. The style I follow with OneNote, an be implemented in LiquidText as well, but I haven’t tried it yet.

i've used my ipad gen 6 (2018), an apple pencil and the onenote app for this last school year i'm a third year uni student and i can honestly say this is hands down the best thing i ever did!, you can insert your slides and write your notes right beside them so you always know what note was made about what point, you can use the split screen feature to have your book on one side and your notes on the other , you can easly rewrite notes to make them more orgnized without the guilt of wasting paper, you can save all the notes you toke from past cources easly, no need to carry pens, books, slides, paper as you can easly replace all of them with the ipad it's really great I LOVE IT only down side tho is you can't use it to upload homework or assignmants to blackboard

I got a bonus at my old job last year, and I opted to use it for an iPad and the new Apple Pencil (gen2). It was probably the most expensive indulgence I have ever made, and I was TERRIFIED to use it. I am heavy handed, so the screen was freaking me out some, even though I really liked the options for it.
One of the things I purchased to make my life easier was a screen cover/protector. The one I have is a thicker plastic, but it doesn't affect the use of the screen at all. So if you, like me, are heavy handed and scared of using the screen, invest in a screen protector! I now use my iPad all the time and I am much more confident about using it.

You don’t need a hybrid to take both typed notes and handwritten notes! I have an ipad pro (or air i’m not sure lmao) that has an apple pencil so i can take handwritten notes on the app of my choice, but you can purchase a wireless keyboard for your ipad that will also prop it up just like a computer so you don’t need to purchase a hybrid. Make sure you get a good keyboard that won’t cause your ipad to fall or anything while taking notes during class because, well, that would be very embarrassing. I recommend ZAGG ProKeys, it has two options for how you want to angle your ipad, and the keyboard can connect to your ipad wirelessly without bluetooth. The only thing that’s annoying is that it needs to be charged every month or so depending on usage, but it charges fast and you can always check the battery before class. The charger is also the same as an ipad charger which comes in handy in case you loose the charger to the keyboard. ZAGG ProKeys aren’t very cute or aesthetic but I like the sound it makes when I type and you can always paint it if you want the keyboard to look more aesthetically pleasing or fit to what you’d like. Just don’t get a cheap cute one off of amazon.

There's some information missing from this video. With One Note, while it's an endless document, you can set it to appear like Lined and Graph paper through the 'View' tab. The version of OneNote you're using is the app version, but there is a larger version included with Microsoft Office that offers some additional options. I like OneNote a lot better, bc I can import my professor's PowerPoint presentation slides into the page and take notes directly on them. Since Microsoft created the app, you can import any file/document from some of the Microsoft Office applications.

You know more people buying ipads is way worse than “chopping down trees”. More ipads = more mining of metals such as cobalt and lithium in developing countries by children trying to earn enough money to get food. Mining ruins environment. Think about all the pollution that it will take to make just the battery of the ipad.
And a lot of paper manufacturers use bamboo. And bamboo grows extremely fast. Also especially in the U.S they take trees down in a sustainable manner so there’s enough time for other trees to grow. Developing countries don’t even care about sustainability.

I’m starting college this year and I plan to purchase the iPad 6th gen just because it’s on the cheaper end even though i rather have a pro of course who wouldn’t it works better with my budget because I’m also purchasing a MacBook Air for my typing portion of notes and class work I love to hand write notes so I’m very exited to get my iPad but I’m so nervous to go paperless when it comes to text books do you find it easier to have them online or still hand flip the pages from an actual book? Great video keep up the great work!❤️

I think a hybrid between paper and digital works best for me! :)
    Thanks for the video Caitlin

Same :) I download (or purchase from etsy) handwritten (note-taking) fonts that look like a kid or a student's handwriting, my fave free font are Gaegu and Caroni. So I type instead of writing but it still gives the effect of handwriting.

I loved your video on this! I'm looking to pick up a tablet soon so I can start taking handwritten notes in one place instead of 50 notebooks.
Also, not sure if anyone else needs a decent flashcard app, but Anki is a free tool that lets you create flashcards that you can sync across your devices (you can also use drawings, insert pictures, etc). I also really like that it dynamically shows you the material you actually need to learn (i.e. you'll see flashcards you get wrong more often so you can actually learn the material).

Just thought I'd add that, if you're going to have digital notes, then it's best to do so on a tablet or a laptop w/ a touchscreen (e.g chromebook) because typing notes means you're more likely to forget them as it's easier to type than write.
If this is smth that doesn't bother you because you look over your notes often and want the consistently neat notes that typing provides then it's fine but I thought it was best to mention it for those who don't have a large touchscreen device such as an ipad and don't plan on purchasing one.

I have an iPad and I do prefer it because I get annoyed if there is anything wrong in my notes. When I wrote a word wrong i started over again and I think for me it’s better to use an iPad where I can delete everything easily. I think I used a lot of paper which annoyed me 😬🙃🙂

In my case, I study languages, which tablet do you think is good for university? is the cheap iPad enough for a student or should I go with the air? Pro is way too expensive, unfortunately.

You could go to View>Paper size
then customize your desired paper size and then save it as a template.
To make it your default template:
Go to Insert > Page Template > Always use a specific template, and then select the template you just made.

How did you make the outside line of the grey box disappear after you used the shape tool? You didn’t explain it how you basically just shadowed it and I can’t figure it out for the life of me. Please explain 😭😭

    • @mahfuzahismail
      @mahfuzahismail 5 лет назад +1

BaileyAllie just undo it after you draw the shape. Line will disappear but background colour will retain. But make sure you turn on the FILL COLOUR option first

If you don't have money for an ipad (let's be honest, most of us don't) look into drawing tablets, there's some with bluetooth and most you just connect it with a cable, you can get one for like $20 bucks now. Here are some upsides :
    - Cheap
    - You have everything in one place (laptop or phone)
    - Shortcut keys
    - Very portable
    - Probably won't get stolen
    - You don't have to spend like 100 dollars on a stylus or a pencil alone

For those who can't afford an Ipad, Get a Graphics/Drawing tablet!
I recommend Wacom One graphics/drawing tablet, it's only 35.99 on Amazon right now which is really affordable (You don't have to buy one with a screen btw). You can connect a graphics tablet/drawing tablet to your Laptop (Mac/Windows) and handwrite your notes on OneNote/word or any software you want. They take some getting used to, your handwriting might be bad at first but once you do it will be a really great tool.
