I can understand why some fans don't like Sega's decision to make Kazuma the sole playable character again; but personally I understand why they did it. The series started out with just Kazuma so it makes sense it ends with just him, and personally, I felt that the plots of both Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5 got way too tangled up in plots and characters and schemes. 5 in particular was all over the place in terms of story.

That's fair! Even if we're not playing as those other characters though, it'd have been nice to see some of them in more active roles given how important they became to the franchise as time went on (if we are viewing the purpose of this game to be a swan song of sorts). Akiyama is the closest the game gets to that, while characters like Majima, Saejima and Dojima feel like they get the cameo treatment. As I say in the video though, it's more "that's a very slight disappointment" rather than "THIS GAME BLOWS." Thanks for watching!

Kiryu being the only playable character makes sense since this is supposed to the conclusion to his story. Yakuza 6 also isn't reusing assets since it's built on a new engine, which is something the series is known for doing. My guess is they opted to spend the resources to fully develop one character rather than split them up to get 2-4 less fleshed out characters.

I mostly agree with you. My biggest problem with the game (SOME SPOILERS INCOMING) is the absurd absence of some of the best, old-school Yakuza characters, Majima, Saejima and Daigo (ok maybe not so much Daigo, but you get my point), and the fact that Haruka was absent from most of the game despite the story revolving heavily around her. I don't much appreciate the way it was handled, the way they created a situation that sent them to prison just so that we can focus more on Kiryu himself, and I wish Haruka would have woken up sooner, or maybe better yet, that there was a feature where Kiryu could visit her in the hospital at any time and sort "talk to her" about the things he's been through while he sits there and hopes for her to wake up. This minor gripe of mine is maybe offset by the fact that the Hirose Family members are strong characters and the relationship they form with Kiryu is endearing up until the final moments, and Beat Takeshi is awesome as Hirose no Oyabun. But I agree, it would have been nice with some more perspective, although not to the extent that we got in 4 and 5 which in my opinion was too much. Yakuza 0 strikes the perfect balance imo.

I discovered the Yakuza series through a playthrough of 4 by the guys over at Two Best Friends Play, and I was hooked by the end. I had to try this insane series and explore every bit of it. I started with 0 back in January of 2017 and then picked up Kiwami in August. Now I have the luxury to play through 4 and 5 on Playstation now. In the games I've played, I've come to really appreciate all the love and passion that goes into them. I cannot wait to play 6 in the coming month, and look forward to finishing Kiryu's story. Its been a hell of a ride, and I'll be sad to see it end, but its been worth the price of admission. If Hamish or I didn't convince you, seriously just buy 0 and play it for yourself and you'll understand.

Even now, Yakuza 6's is the sad but amazing send off for Kiryu.
    Spoilers
The fact that Kiryu willingly faked his death for the sake of his family but also so that Haruto (the baby) cannot be dragged down the criminal life like him is just a gut punching moment, and seeing the parallels of Haruto taking his first steps to a brighter life with Kiryu taking his final steps, finally putting the literal years of the life as a yakuza behind him is just somber.

  • @killertoadstools

In all honesty, don't start with 4, ever. It's a great game sure, and it introduces many central characters and, of course, the best boi Akiyama. However, it's plot is so all over the place that it can leave a bad impression towards the end. 5 is okay, but without prior knowledge of the series, it too can be jarring and leave a bad impression right off the bat (pun intended). I still think 0 or Kiwami are the better choices for an entry.

Really solid review. I love your earnest and down to earth perspective. As someone who’s played every game in the series multiple times in both English and Japanese, I really appreciate the spotlight you’re placing in the series. I will say though that I do disagree on your thoughts in regards to the multiple character dilemma in Yakuza 6. I agree about some pacing issues perhaps towards the end of the game, but I don’t see how focusing on multiple characters would have helped in this case; even when the plot focuses more on the grander picture, it’s still a personal struggle for Kiryu. I really wish I could discuss this stuff with more people because I may in fact be wrong. I know the story will probably be divisive for some.

Yakuza 6 has been the most immersive, well story tell of all so far. i grew up playing Yakuza games, and the first time i played Yakuza 6 was none other than the Ryu Ga Gotoku 6 itself which i bought in japan in 2018, before I could get a copy in English. Although my japanese is not great i could understand most of the story and it had an emotional impact on me ever since i finished Yakuza 5. I cannot stress enough how many things are lost in the western counter part Yakuza, as many references and music which are present in Ryu ga gotoku 6 are not in in Yakuza, starting with Tatsuro' s Yamashita Soubou song. That song a the game starts immediately puts you on the skin and bones of the characters specially on Haruka' s and Kiryu and makes you understan what doesn the song of life truly means. I loved this game and cried, and I got even more emotional with Takeshi Kitano participation

I recently got into this series through Kiwami a few weeks ago and man, I have let this series go for far too long. I found a new steel book copy for $15 on Amazon. I was already planning on getting Zero at some point since a lot of people used it as a jumping on point, but this seemed like too good of a deal to pass up. I figured a from-the-ground-up remake of the first game would also serve as a fine point to jump on, and I'm loving it. I will get 6 eventually, but I've got some catching up to do first.

I'm a very long way into the game, and I think far enough to weigh in a bit here. I really love the game, for sure. But it definitely suffers from the "new engine" problem. Since so much of the development of this game revolved around making things work with a brand new engine (which works great, I must say. Although I find Kiryu runs into things and gets stopped by them a bit too often), that it feels lighter in content than previous games. A lot of long-recurring minigames are gone or changed significantly (the hostess club minigame seemed to have gotten hit the hardest with this, of games that weren't removed entirely like the various card games). The substories are a lot more straightforward and tame than recent entries. Kiryu's movelist is fairly barebones, especially with the MUCH smaller variety in weapon-based heat moves (motorcycles and desks now use the same heat move animation, for instance).
That's not to say I'm not having a blast. While you're right about the story itself pulling Kiryu in a lot of different directions and can get overwhelming in the big picture (there are no fewer than FOUR different major organized crime groups antagonizing you and each other at once this time around, and that's even without the substories like the whole Clan Creator plot featuring real-life NJPW wrestlers as antagonists), the supporting cast is really fantastic, and that's what would matter most to our protagonist. Kiryu never really cared much for the larger schemes and machinations of the many villains of the series. What he cares about are the people around him and how he can best protect them. By giving him a new set of charming supporting characters, that comes across very distinctly. So while the actual plot is a bit of a mess, the real story of Kiryu wanting to protect people he cares for works as well as it ever has.
Overall, I think the new engine is going to be a real winner from now on, and I'm excited to see what they do with it in 7 with our brand new main character. It feels like this and Kiwami 2 are Sega working out the kinks and getting in practice with the new engine so they can really put their all into the debut of our new protagonist. We've been with Kiryu and his crew for so long, that Ichiban's going to have to really knock it out of the park.

It's a long journey (took me a year to get to Like a Dragon literally) and that's with me rushing through Kiwami thru to 6 by not doing any side stories. It is worth at least playing those games for the main story because they're all amazing besides IMO 3 (mostly). But it is just the end of Kiryu's story. That doesn't mean it is the end of the story for the other characters, or that a later game won't explore the same events from another character's perspective. As a writer, jumping between perspectives within the same work rarely adds anything to the story. Writing separate works which tell the same story from different perspectives is often far more effective.

I have to say, the story of 6 is way better than 4 or 5. I feel the story can lose focus when it's jumping between characters and can't go as far as 6 has. 0 was a much better example of having multiple main characters

Prefacing this comment saying I haven't finished Yakuza 6, but I'm nearing the end. Also, I pretty much binged all the games up to 6 (late I know) and I feel really different about the multi character complaint.
I see this complaint a lot with regards to Yakuza 6, and after experiencing so much of the game so far, I'm genuinely in disagreement with the sentiment. I'm playing 6 off of the coattails of 0 and while I loved the abundance and quality of the content available in 0, 6 has been decidedly more cohesive. I don't think I've played another Yakuza game that went to such an extent to link the themes to the side activities as much as 6 has (perhaps except Kiwami 2? Which I've sadly yet to play). However, I feel like this has largely been ignored by most. Like most everyone that plays this franchise, I love the abundance of side activities, however, I've never felt greatly compelled to complete most of what's offered (to give more context, I usually do most/if not all the side quests and character upgrades but not really go for higher scores etc) . With 6 however, it's been such a different experience. Walking into Batam, and getting a small chain of side quests with regards to engaging with darts? I was genuinely surprised. Also, the carbaret clubs actually having side quests attached to the hostesses were great and made me want to invest the time in doing them all (I know 0 had the same thing, but it was so much more of a chore finishing all of Majima's business. I loved the mini game, but it kinda overstayed its welcome. Just a bit). However, going back to the original tangent, I haven't once felt burnt out on Kiryu's adventure thus far. Every time I'm let loose in a city with time to roam, there's always something new to engage with, and the context with which I engage with those systems are always connected to the theme in some way. I really feel like the studio really went all in to make this the most immersive world yet, and I genuinely don't feel that we NEEDED another character to offset the game's pacing. Then again, I'm also probably in the minority in really loving Yakuza 3. It was very flawed, but it really captivated me. I suppose 6 being an evolution of that base concept made me instantly love it.
I'm not trying to say my perspective is the objective truth, or that someone else is wrong for being disappointed, but I feel it's unfortunate that so many seem to condense the entire experience into ''There's no Majima, terrible game." I think that's what really muddies the debate in my eyes. The game minces no words, this is Kiryu's and Haruka's story. While, I haven't reached the end, I suspect most of the former protagonists aren't going to get a satisfying conclusion, however, I'll be preemptive and say that's not going to bother me at all. All Yakuza games could be their own self contained experiences. They're all built in such a way that knowing or not knowing the previous entries won't massively impact the sequels. Saejima and Majima had their arcs. Date's arc was finished since Kiwami. Akiyama's was in 4. And yea, you could easily Argue Kiryu's arc had finished since long ago, but I would argue Haruka changed that dynamic. More so, with her role in 5 and 6 (at least what I've seen of it in 6 thus far).
Yakuza 6, at least to me, seems to be the logical conclusion of such a winding series; going back to the roots and iterating and evolving many base concepts. Personally, at least so far, I'd say I still enjoyed 0, just a bit more, but 6 is easily my 2nd favorite in the series.
PS: While everyone wanted more characters to play as, I just wanted them to bring back the friendship system. Would've been perfect if they did. And yea, I also lamented that so much of Kamurocho was ''under construction''. Would've easily been my favorite if those 2 things were amended.

Took the words out of my mouth, and I'm right there with you on being a fan of Yakuza 3! In fact, my top 3 games in this series are 0, 3, and 6, and 6 came DAMN close to dethroning both games for me. With more of Kamurocho available and a wider variety of combat options, there's a good chance 6 would have become my favorite in the series hands-down. As for the friendship system, have you gone to Snack New Gaudi in Onomichi? If not, it might scratch that itch. I personally found it quite compelling. I also think that 6 has a lot of DNA from 3, I instantly got a Ryudo Family vibe from Hirose and his boys when I first met them.

Where kiryu met with pocket racer again and he was old and lost the place. I think kiryu got a bit teary from jt? And met pocket racers son and wife too and goes on. But that got to me .. seeing pocket racer gone and him old finally and seeing kiyru it hits a different way... it shows us a end that we all eventually will get too

GiantPurplePen15 Don’t worry; I do recommend picking up 6 when you can just to support the series. 2-5 are WONDERFUL games, but if you really are itching to play 6, I recommend you (emulate..?) 2, a game that holds up very well, but definitely play the PSN downloads of 4 and 5. 3 is an excellent game but unfortunately it’s probably the hardest game in the series to find.

    • @huzi990

I've actually got the Collector's Edition pre-ordered and currently own copies of 2, 3, and 4 for their respective consoles, just not enough time in the day to get through my backlog fast enough :(. Hoping Kiwami 2 and 5 get physical North American releases sooner than later.

    • @scenedikemon
      @scenedikemon 6 лет назад +2

GiantPurplePen15 sadly it’s unlikely for 5 to ever get a physical release; if you can get it on sale it is the definitive end chapter for all other characters other than Kiryu, so it’s a must, if you have time that is lol.
Also yeah mate Kiwami 2 is amazing. Already platinumed the game. The combat system is absolutely fantastic and it’s the most kinetic the series has been. Still worth playing the original though, the original 2 may have the best soundtrack in the series.

*SPOILERS LATER ON IN THE STORY WILL BE TALKED ABOUT IN MY COMMENT*
I'd have to agree with the writing being the most consistently funny and sincere. Most of the scenes feel a lot more real than the rest of the series, especially everything with the Hirose family and its patriarch.
However, I'm sort of disappointed by some of the twists up to the point where I am, basically up to the chinese and the second fight with Ed.
Maszuoe turning out to be chinese, and just kind of being in Kamurocho is sort of far fetched and never played to before, many parts of the story can get sort of slow and especially when the player is stuck in Onomichi during the first part of the game there's almost NOTHING to do but to progress the story.
I'm not through the game all the way yet, but I'm having more fun with Yakuza 6 than I had with Yakuza Kiwami and probably more than I had with Zero.

Nice review, but I didn't like how Y3 was completely disregarded in this discussion. Yakuza started with Kiryu and features Kiryu through 7 games and several spin offs and to disregard the games that focus on his character like Y3 is a disservice to him and what the games are.
I get it that Kiryu may not be interesting to some because he can be stubborn and seem self righteous, but his life and his struggles are such an wonderful thing to experience. Because we live a story that spans 30 years of a life and not only do we see him grow and age, but through him we see a way of life slowly dying. Kiryu is the embodiment of the yakuza that were more than just criminals, but ppl that society forgot and saw no other way than the yakuza. That yakuza that helped rebuild Japan after the war, that yakuza that was rooted in the ronin samurai. Kiryu is a symbol of a way of life that became obsolete. And we see that shift of perspective as the story progresses.

I picked this game yesterday along with Wolfensein2 and Bloodborne... I only played Yakuza for a couple hours but I enjoyed the combat sequences.

Are you a veteran of Dark Souls? Bloodborne is absolutely amazing and you will have alot of fun with that one. As far as Yakuza, I knew little to nothing about this franchise. I got Yakuza 0 becasue of the hype. Played it and hated it, it caused me physical pain to dredge through the first few hours, but then the training wheels came off and I started to adapt. Yakuza 0 ended up being one of the funnest games I've played in years. Bloodborne, if you like the first few bosses and take to the game, get the DLC as soon as possible. The DLC is not a separate tale or land. It is a expansion of the main game and can be played simultaneously, that is the best way to experience it. Dont F- up like I did and try the DLC after I completed the game. After you complete BB you will have NG+ and difficulty will spike. The difficulty in your DLC will spike as well and it is brutal.

I'm pretty mixed on this engine, on one hand it's make the game feel more seamless and immersive than ever before but also the combat while fun feels very sluggish and has less depth than the previous few entries which didn't have a ridiculous amount of depth to begin with, that said, this is one of the best games in the series

I dont understand why you rag on the lack of shifting perspective when the series was always built like this before 4. You even ignored yakuza 1-3, instead urging people to play 4, 5, and zero as the entry point. In my eyes, yakuza 6 is more of a return to form after the jumbled mess of 5.

    • @NiekNooijens
      @NiekNooijens 4 года назад +2

True, but TBH i loved the jumbled mess of 5. Especially because as kiryu you're suddenly playing other sega games as crazy taxi and initial D (taxi racing with eurobeat in the background)
Also the ending of 5 was one of the most beautiful cliffhangers in a narrative driven game I've seen so far.
I'm now playing 6 and the way it continues from 5 is just a masterpiece.

The only characters I liked playing as was Kiryu, Majima and Akiyama. Didn't care too much for playing as Shinada or Haruka, insufferable. Regarding Y6, I think they got a little shy after the fan feedback on the 1st demo. 1st demo was amazing, it was like a sleek no cut( ala Birdman/MGSV) moody thing. The fight camera was up close and personal. They changed all that in the final game. Static fight cam, traditional cut-scenes. None of the sleek pacing or intrigue of the 1st demo. 1st demo even made it seem like you could buy change and customize clothes in story mode. IMO also they should hire detective novelist guy who wrote Yakuza 2 again.

So it's extremely easy to get lost when your missing an entire games worth of knowledge so for any one interested in getting into yakuza it's best to follow this order starting with yakuza 0 as an introduction to the series than kiwami as the follow up to after events of 0 and than after yakuza 6 song of life as the aftermath of kiwami. Hope I've been helpful to those that want to play the yakuza series.
