Funny thing is that this ump had a better game than an average ump. 93% correct call rate (92% is the average), 1.2 more correct calls than average. Not a terrible night considering he was up at 3:30.
Baseball players are babies. That call that started it was really close. Could go either way. Much closer than the other ones. There was no reason to complain. As a hitter, you should be fouling off pitches that close to the zone.

Honestly not even that bad. Like it’s a forgivable call and it only looks questionable with context of the rest of the game. I remember when we used to get a top-down camera to show if it clipped the plate or not. Now we gotta rely on the solid/empty imagery.

Every single time I’ve witnessed an umpire admit he missed a call during the game (other than not having the right angle or a different interpretation of a grey area in the rules) the coaches always argue later in the game when they want a close call by saying something to the effect of “you admitted you missed that one before, so why can’t the same thing be true now too.” Also, if you’re admitting you missed a call, coaches will inevitably get on you to change the call. So either you make that coach mad and say you won’t change the call you just admitted was wrong, or you make the other coach mad by changing the call that favored him. All roads lead to escalating the situation.

This missed all the pitches by Mariners pitches that were on the edge of the zone and should have been called strikes that the Ump called a ball. That is what Cal was really upset about, not the clear balls that were shown here. The most egregious misses were when Kirby Snead had just pitched the Top 8th right before this

That’s why the first thing they teach you in clinics is to be decisive and confident in your calls, even if you’re unsure. I see it all the time with newer umpires where coaches get on indecisive umpires like flies on manure and they just get bullied and abused the entire game.
