Look at their elbows, you can see 3 is definitely more extended than 1, Jomboy even acknowledges that the hands were closer in at 1 but then dismisses it by saying its basically the same. And like he said theres no rhyme or reason to it so if thats where the ump is drawing his line, even if I dont agree I dont think its terrible. Calling it a swing when he was behind home plate without checking though is total bs.
Jomboy has a second career as a lip reader. I love these vids cuz he gives great emphasis in the telling of what was said. This is way more entertaining than watching these things in game.
The thing is, sometimes the hands and the bat can go exactly the same distance on two occasions but one just looks like a swing more than the other. I think it's to do with body language and the timing of the pitch. If you back out way early then it looks better than if you get the same distance and back out once the ball is in the glove.
I really appreciate this ump's demeanor, especially when compared to somebody like Laz Diaz who literally got caught on a hot mic talking shit about a player who complained about his bad call. Check swings can be tough to call at full speed, and then we nitpick them in slowmo. He did a great job keeping his composure and professionalism in both games. My only complaint is that he should've asked the base ump when he was behind the plate just like the plate ump checked with him at first. But at least he was willing to have an open minded discussion about it with the manager.
I don't understand how he won't ask for help on the last one. There is no way he can be that confident in a check swing from behind the plate. The 3rd base ump is there for a reason.
@@chadkameka3582why should he ask for help if he feels the batter struck at the ball? If the rule had anything to do with the bat crossing the plate I would understand but it doesn't. In order to be a strike the home plate umpire just has to believe the batter attempted to strike at the ball. If an umpire wanted to, he could call every check swing a strike and he would be technically correct.

It’s a judgment call though. So I mean I could argue they were all swings or say none of them are and it’s still correct. Should it be the home plate umps judgement is the question…
You gotta do the Torey Lovullo defending Gabriel Moreno after he got plunked in KC tonight breakdown. Also Toronto won that last game after the manager let that off his chest which sucks for the Dbacks.
I think Suarez and Springer passed ever-so-slightly the point of offering at the ball. The other two weren't swings, and I agree, most times... ask for help.
Fair reminder: Gabe Morales was the umpire who badly missed the checked swing call against Wilmer Flores of the Giants against the Dodgers in Game 5 of the 2021 NLDS. His missed call ended the series.
It doesn't matter if he missed all 3. Be consistent and make sure you have the best chance to make the correct call. Obviously Schneider is going to say he missed all 3, he's biased, as he should be.
Nah I hate this take also. He should be trying to get to call correct every time. Even if he screwed up on the first 2, don't start making wrong calls just to be consistently bad. Just try to make the right call.
@@GregRJohnson736 Idk. Consistently shows a deliberate interpretation of the rule(s) in a certain way. As a player/coach you can take note and adjust. That isn't necessarily a problem. It can benefit certain teams and play styles so it is somewhat desirable in some situations. One person's "right" call is another person's blown call, especially in regards to baseball rules. The issue is consistency. It's very difficult to prepare when you have no idea how a rule is going to be called. That's very frustrating for *everyone* including fans.
He got two of the three. The plate umpire is under no obligation to appeal to the base runner if the plate umpire rules it's a swing. The base ump shouldn't contradict him on that anyway.
if you can watch this and dont understand why alot of us take the umps side first then idk what to say at this point managers and players are actually delusional
Does not matter if the first was a swing or not because it was actually a strike. As per umping goes, if you're going to call close ones for one team, you have to call them for the other team too. Some umps, we all know have their teams that they dislike and they will make calls in the other teams favor. I think once per game, a player or manager should have the right to knock out a disliked umpire without a fine. That would straighten the ump crap out.
Jays are bound to be touchy about this because of institutional memory. In the 80s the Joe Brinkman crew practically wore the other teams’ jerseys and flew little Fuck You Toronto flags when they did a Jays game and the League didn’t give a shit until it started to be mentioned in books.
That’s not what Morales was referring to. If that were the case, umpires have signals for all of these and he signaled strike on the swing, not for a foul ball/tip. Also, that probably would have been one of the first things he says when the coach came to argue about not asking for help.
If the first base Ump sees the top of the bat it’s a swing. If the batter checks his swing it won’t cross the plate line. If the batter is in the back of the box to get more visual time they also then have more of an angle to see the plate line crossed even if behind the front of the plate.
"Did he attempt to strike the ball?" I mean isn't that what you're trying to do when you're up at the plate? You're trying to hit the ball lol. So technically every checked swing should be called a swing every time then.
A strike is a pitch that "is struck at by the batter and is missed." Therefore, the question on any checked swing is, "Did the batter strike at the pitch and miss?" That's all the guidance the Official Baseball Rules gives us on checked swings.
Man that's tough because live they all look like they checked their swing but in replay it's more like Geno and Springer didn't swing while Walker and Daulton did.
Is that what the rule used to be? I see your point for sure, but, on the other hand hitting is already difficult enough, if they honestly try to keep the bat back and don’t break some imaginary plane/point of no return I could see giving hitters this help. But it does need to be more consistent.
My old man was an ump for 30yrs.. He told me (I assumed he was trained this) that he's looking for the batter breaking their wrist. The way he explained it, he's trying to see if you broke your wrist in attempt to make contact. If you broke your wrist after there was no chance to make contact, then it's not a swing.
That completely ignores the timing required in baseball swing to make decent contact. To keep up with pitching speeds and spin rates, batters sometimes have to start their swing motion at the top of the pitchers release to be ready for a ball that they cannot yet determine if it will cross the plate or not. If a pitcher throws 100mph heater just off the plate, a player won't know that until they have already initiated the start of their swing motion. If hitters couldn't check their swings, they would have a major disadvantage in the box. They would have to sit on a lot of pitches and we would see a lot more guys striking out without even swinging, and no one wants to watch that. It would be interesting to see if the rate of checked swings was higher during the spider-tac era a few years ago, with spin rates that high, batters probably had to pull off a lot of pitches - if every checked swing was a strike, no on would have gotten on base.
He definitely made the call behind the plate on his own as a statement, whether you think it was correct or not. It is really annoying as an umpire working a 2-man system in High school when they ask you to check with the umpire behind the pitcher, that is one of my biggest pet-peeves.
Second that, it's weird they even allow it. Also worth noting that even from 1B/3B this is a tough call considering the angle and being 100' away! Need to give the ump some room here
@@luckyluciano6552 If the defense asks you to check an your partner is in position, then its a good idea to go ahead an check. A goo partner won't overturn a call unless it looked blatantly different. But if you are working a 2 man system the only time your partner would be in proper position for a check swing appeal is with a RH batter and no runners on base; in any other circumstance his view of the batter will (or should) be much worse than yours. Overall though, check swing appeals are technically still granted at the discretion of the HP umpire, there is no requirement they you check when asked. But overall if you have the proper conditions for an appeal, there's really no reason not to.
Can we please accept that the guy was willing to accept at least ONE of his missed calls. That's more than Angel Hernandez ever did in his whole career.
His wrist rolls over in the same manner as an aggressive bunt attempt, that's why he called it. It's not a matter of the bat in such instances... They are watching the wrists.

More breakdowns, please. It's what made you successful. The other channels and content you have are fine, but the breakdowns are your thing. Thanks.
4:47 I am not positive that bat didn't hit that ball........it might be a foul ball strike
The lip reading is impeccable. Insane actually. Even if I don't care for the teams I always watch a break down. So good.
Serious missed opportunity at 4:40 to sneak in Jomboy's face on the D'Backs mascot.
Does it really matter Jomboy...my Jays suck! 😭
That passive aggressive response from the ump would've driven me crazy if I was the manager
This dude looks so happy to be an ump. I love him.
Give him a few years, he won’t like the job
Jomboy has a second career as a lip reader. I love these vids cuz he gives great emphasis in the telling of what was said. This is way more entertaining than watching these things in game.
See I Watch Baseball if Jomboy is calling
The way Snider just walks into the frame at 1:56 is just amazing
1 is a swing, 2 is up to preference, 3 is a swing, 4 is less of a swing than 2 but is close enough I think it has to be the same call.
@@25mdarchi If he wants to save himself a headache he should. If you ask for a second opinion, worst case scenario dude disagrees and you can overturn the call. Best case he agrees and you have backing. If you don't ask you open yourself up to claims of malfeasance or bias. You also dont end up on a Jomboy breakdown 🤣
@@25mdarchi He should ask because the umps down the line have a better angle. He was at 1st the day before and was asked several times to help. That's how it works.
I know the rule is muddy and leaves it up to the umps interpretation, but let's use some common sense.
3:20 Wow, this is the first time I've seen Jomboy stumped!!!
Is "What is a swing?" like the "What is a catch?" question in football?
The breakdown from Royals-DBacks last night is gonna hit like crack
EDIT: I got "I dont appreciate you *** my own call " or "Do you think your opinion matters to me?"
Amazing breakdown JomBoy... you got that whole fucking argument thats crazy. I love a good Jomboy breakdown because I wouldnt EVER know the intricacies of the argument and how all of this effects a ball game is just so crazy.
Great stuff
100%. I show these really good "battling breakdowns" to my non-sports friends. I tell them this is why I always come back to sports. Jomboy opens up this world to folks who might not have the ear or desire to be able to be aware of how hilarious this shit is.
I agree with people when they say baseball sucks. I reply, "Baseball sucks, but the people are amazing".
@JomboyMedia Man, having to censor the F-word is absolutely brutal. I mean, love you dude, so happy you’re able to secure the bag a lil bit with the sponsorships and what not, wish you all the best, can’t blame you, but it makes the videos so much funnier. Especially on this one it looked like they dropped a lot when they were arguing it woulda been hilarious to have that in there. But I understand and would never expect you to make less money for that. Just sharing my thoughts haha. Maybe try to do the videos that don’t allow it with less cussing in general? Cuz this one would have been absolute gold if the f bombs were allowed. Anyway, love you just the same brother. Great work as always.
Schneider is actually good friends with my dad. They play golf together in the offseason. I hope he keeps his job past this year, but I'm not so sure.
Im sure hes a great guy but with the moves he made he probably doesnt deserve to keep his job if the Jays are serious about contending next year.
@@Tbj93 I agree. I think he's gone after this season, unfortunately for him.
As a jays fans, F Schneider!!!
@@CryptidKeeperTCGSchneider wasn’t thr isssue
He’s not the ideal manager for the team I agree but this is all on shatkins and thr players them selves
@@osastruthraptureready1106 no I’m not talking about the players. He’s made some stupid moves. Sitting Varsho while he was in the middle of a hot streak earlier this years was the last straw for me.
I feel like Schneider went out there to get tossed, but Gabe was calmer than he expected and that flummoxed him.
I count the second one only in the first 3 but if you call springer then all 3 are a swing.
The only opinion that matters on those calls is the umpire that was asked. He can’t say wait, let me get with the other umpires. What we think doesn’t matter. Or maybe you think he should have asked the coach
@@richardduggar4665 not saying he should ask the coach but when you make the wrong call own it. And your right what we think doesn't matter in the short term but in the long term what we think as fans is what gets rule changes brought in such as the pitch clock.
3:28
What I THINK he says is something along the lines of "So do you think I'm messing up your pitchers and batters with my own calls?"
Swing
no Swing
Swing
In which case the ump was right that "he only missed 1". Still crazy not to ask for help on the 4th, that one is way too close.
Jomboy should hire one of those deaf people that can read lips super well for when he himself can’t
All 3 are swings imo
yeah as a blue jays fan i gotta agreee
I think viewing replay, yes, but #2 is close enough to be ambiguous on first viewing.
Close call sports is good on this, and using her work as my guideline (ie did they try to hit and Not the swing) they’re all strikes.
None of those were swings.
None of them are swings
"I'm gonna do this now!" 😂
My favorite part 😭😭 he’s a boss ngl
It’s a judgment call though. So I mean I could argue they were all swings or say none of them are and it’s still correct. Should it be the home plate umps judgement is the question…
You gotta do the Torey Lovullo defending Gabriel Moreno after he got plunked in KC tonight breakdown. Also Toronto won that last game after the manager let that off his chest which sucks for the Dbacks.
I think Suarez and Springer passed ever-so-slightly the point of offering at the ball. The other two weren't swings, and I agree, most times... ask for help.
I'm impressed by the calm demeanor of this ump. If a guy came at me like that I'd end up matching his emergy and escalate the situation.
Fair reminder: Gabe Morales was the umpire who badly missed the checked swing call against Wilmer Flores of the Giants against the Dodgers in Game 5 of the 2021 NLDS. His missed call ended the series.
So in other words he’s a bad umpire
This umpire stood on business I love that guy
Jomboy is holding umpires accountable!
He got two of the three. The plate umpire is under no obligation to appeal to the base runner if the plate umpire rules it's a swing. The base ump shouldn't contradict him on that anyway.
Another diamondback ejection that happened yesterday. I really want a lip reading on that.
if you can watch this and dont understand why alot of us take the umps side first then idk what to say at this point managers and players are actually delusional
Some context too is that the blue jays had a 7-0 lead and dbacks had tied it at 7-7 . Dude was already angry and worried about dropping the game.
All three were swings. This ump handles things VERY good. All smiles and stating facts.
I think it's "So do you think Springer....pitch..." But that was all I could get
Does not matter if the first was a swing or not because it was actually a strike.
As a cricket fan, I’m amazed that it is legit for a player in the dug out to argue with the umpire!
Is it just me or does it look like Varsho fouled the ball off? I think that's what Gabe Morales was referring to when he called a strike on Varsho
That’s not what Morales was referring to. If that were the case, umpires have signals for all of these and he signaled strike on the swing, not for a foul ball/tip. Also, that probably would have been one of the first things he says when the coach came to argue about not asking for help.
As a reminder, same dude called an obvious check swing to end the Giants’ 21 run.
one is a swing, two is not, three is a swing..............ump was right two out of three
If the first base Ump sees the top of the bat it’s a swing.
Just get rid of check swings altogether. It's a stupid rule that creates too much confusion. If you start the swing at all, it's a strike. Simple.
This rule is wild. If the batter attempts a swing at all, it's a swing. Simple as that. That's how it should be.
That's the dumbest take ever. You clearly don't know much about baseball. Why are you trying to suggest rules for something you don't understand?
@1uckedout I understand baseball is the only sport that can't figure out its own rules.
@@greenballoons09 Another very intelligent and well thought out take. Bravo
Id love to jomboy to actually do the commentary for MLB that would be epic lmao
He definitely made the call behind the plate on his own as a statement, whether you think it was correct or not. It is really annoying as an umpire working a 2-man system in High school when they ask you to check with the umpire behind the pitcher, that is one of my biggest pet-peeves.
It drives me crazy too, happens all the time. I sometimes don’t “check” with my field ump…not sure if I’m supposed to do that
Second that, it's weird they even allow it.
Well we knew there were going to be contenders for Angel Hernandez’ spot. He’s building his résumé.
i remember watching this game going, "man i hope jomboy does a breakdown to this"
His wrist rolls over in the same manner as an aggressive bunt attempt, that's why he called it. It's not a matter of the bat in such instances... They are watching the wrists.
Oh, I like Gabes nonchalant sass
