How to trim Pig hooves

- We have had many requests on how to trim pig hooves. Let me start out by saying we are not farriers but this is how we get our pigs trimmed. When you start a homestead there are many expenses that come up and you need to be able to take care of some of them yourself if you can. With practice and patience trimming your pig hooves is something that you can manage and not need to pay money to have done. Also, we don't have a pig farrier that we know of locally so we have taken on this task ourselves.

That wasn't so bad. I've been noticing that our older gilts need their first trimming (they just turned one), so you encouraged us to give it a go on our own!
Awesome you can do it. It will be easier each time. They will squeal but they are fine!
I did not know you could put a Kunekune on their back like that 😮 Our herd is almost a year old and we are ready to start trimming nails. Thanks for sharing the knowledge! Nooice! 😎 STOC
Very helpful! If you have one bleed you can put styptic powder to clot it up. I keep some handy in case I cut myself shaving.
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to show the process. Always helpful to actually see how others trim hooves. Keep up the good work.
Welcome
@KCFarms
Just imagine if pigs had a volume sound reducing button 😅, then that would be great for youtube video recording.
@KCFarms he's complaining. Poor soul hates being on his back
So appreciate you doing the whole procedure of hoof trimming, even through the noise - reality. Very helpful in knowing what to expect and what to do.
Thanks so much!
Glad you enjoyed it. They all squeal but then they are fine. Some people put a towel over their head to calm them
Thank you for this video! I’m learning how to trim my pigs’ hooves and also for other pig owners in my community. This has been the best video I’ve seen on here by far. You have some beautiful pigs!
Thanks we appreciate that
Thanks so much for this video! I watched it after struggling with my breeding pair of kune kunes for a while. It's definitely no easy task!!
Welcome glad it helped
Thank you both SO MUCH for this awesome video !!! I have 4 potbellies and 1 kune , I just moved and can’t find a pig farrier anywhere !! My pigs are only use to me so I will watch this video a dozen times and give it a try !!! I will also get the trimmers you suggested !! You both are amazing pig parents !! Thank you !! 🐽❤️
Awesome glad it helped! Be prepared for them to squeal but they will be fine
Very good tutorial. We have only raised up weaner pigs to butcher before now, so keeping breeders is a whole new set of skills for us to learn. Thank you for breaking it down to simple steps.
Your welcome. Thanks for following along.
Great teaching skills 👏👌 so nice to have the boss out helping out lol. Happy New year 🎉✨💛🤗
Thank you happy new year
Hoof trimming is one of my least favorite things to do with our goats. You make a difficult job look so easy. Well done you! Those Khakis are looking good. They are so independent at first but now they come running for us because they know who brings their food. Your flock looks beautiful. It was so good to see Jamie today! I bet y'all are enjoying your time together during the Christmas break. I don't know how teachers survive the chaos of kids all day every day. God bless you for doing such a difficult but important job. Hope your Christmas celebration was everything you hoped it would be. We'll pray that 2022 is a blessed year for everyone. Thanks for sharing, blessings always, g.
Definitely not our favorite job on the farm but it gets easier over time. We had great holiday and are definitely enjoying the family time. Thanks for your support
Helped so much. Just rescued a 13lb runt. Her back hooves needed this badly. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Awesome glad it helped
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I was glad to learn how to do this,I have adopted by neices lil pop belly pig,he's only like a year old now,so I need to learn how to do it,he already follows me around an trusts me a bit,I just wanna make sure I don't cut off too much.
This was awesome to see! Thanks for sharing this!
You are welcome glad you enjoyed it!
Best video I have found thank you so much!
Thank you glad it helped
Thanks for posting this. It gives me the confidence I need to tackle this with my Kune barrow's hooves. The only person who will do hooves on pigs where I live is the vet. He will only do them with sedation and it was 408.00 for 3 pigs! Doing it myself will save a fortune. I have been too chicken to flip them. My biggest boy is almost 550 lbs. I'm pretty sure after watching this video, and with help from my hubby or sister, I can do it.
You can do it! Gets easier everytime
what a great video! so much insight. i love this. and i love piggies :)
Thanks for following along
This is super helpful! Thank you! My 4 kunes are all overdue for this because I dont have much experience doing it and have been dreading learning. So the timing is perfect. You make it look easy. My boars are huge and my two gilts are small and kinda wild, so I’m a little nervous. Maybe I’ll just practice the flips a few times first.
Definitely was not our favorite thing to do but has gotten easier over time.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who's nervous to do first time. Watching this video makes me feel better. The light trick will definitely help me bc my Sassy has very dark nails.
Thank you so much. Very helpful.
Welcome glad it helped
Impressive work!!!
I stubbled upon this video due to my current aquire of Kunekune and heard you were KC farms so I was like OMG they in KC area like me, nope, Tennessee. :D
Nope sorry, family nickname
Thanks a lot for your help. I think am ready to do mines
Gets easier and easier you’ve e got this
Great info!
Thank you!
Thank you great advice a few of our pigs at the sanctuary are around 700 pounds ..The fork works well
Those are some big pigs
@@KCFarms yes beautiful 🥰 Chester whites and spotted pigs have to use sunscreen on them because Oahu sun gives them sunburns ...We don't want that ! Take care 🥰
Great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks
My wife does not trust me with sharp objects. I'm gonna need you to head south soon for some smoked chicken, btw, bring your cutters.....lol
Sound like a plan
awesome i’ve got to do my pot belly pigs this week for the 1st time it’s way over due .It’s never been done on them. Ruby Mae is a 16 months old and max is about 5 months old.wish me luck 🍀
You’ll do great! They will scream and act like babies but you’ve got this
Thank You! I have a Pot Belly named Strawberry.
Nice video to see how that is done … how often do you do them or Ck them…?
Really enjoyed this video, my 4 are coming 1 year and need to give them their first trim. This video helped so much, I don’t feel intimidated as much now. I do trim my horses so the pigs should be easy? 🤷🏻♀️
You’ve got this
5:22 this pork really played his role great
I love Mini pigs & Kune Kunes.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Darker nails on goats and dogs are harder to see. I do use a dremel on my show dogs. Is it harder to do the larger pigs? I'm under 115# and 5 ft tall.
Well they are stronger but just hold on and they will calm down. If you get someone to help with the back legs it is easier
Great video! Thank you! I need to do my pigs I guess, they are only 4 mo old but clearly need it from what you showed. My girl started to limp, yesterday so don't know if she got a small thorn or needs a trim. Can a small splinter thorn cause a limp? I can't feel anything.
Thank you. Could be a thorn we have had pigs limp before and haven’t found anything in their feet that might cause that it could be they twisted an ankle on a root or a variety of reasons
Hi guys wanted to ask about tusk removal? Couldn’t find any info on your videos
Thank you ,put I do have another question if the do claw are way over do where they seem to be folding over ,do you stick look for the quick any help would be great and thank you
Those are tricky but I look forward to the quick info can see I just take a little at a time.
So this works well on smaller pigs? Thanks for this video starting to think about trimming our girls they are Juliana mixes so still very small but I see you said it’s easier the smaller they are. You stay so nice and calm.
Yes it will work fine on them they may scream and get loud but they are fine
@@KCFarms haha yes I don’t feel bad it just knocks me off my game 😅I can see how it works on predators!
I "inherited" a large lady pot belly pig and her hooves are super long - dew claws long but straight. How often can I trim to get her hooves back to normal? I am guessing I can only take a little off at a time until the quick retreats? Like a dog? Any advice would help! Thanks a lot! Shelby in OH
That is what I would do just enough that you feel comfortable with
I have a very large pot belly pig who was trimmed buy a farrier years ago .He is outside and his Hooves have stayed good ,but I have had hand surgeries this past two years and have not been able to try and trim his hooves . They are really elongated now to the point where I'm concerned . Can I trim those very elongated hooves without doing something wrong? Would love to see you trimming directly from the side of the person triming, so we could see the hoof better. I need to do it but I'm so nervous about clipping something too far. And it seems like for some reason they have just grown abnormally fast.
Is there a calming tranquilizer or something you can give the pig, if they are huge to be able to do this without there being a safety issue for you or them?
Is there a method you’d suggest for maybe a sitting position if someone is not physically capable?
I have seen some kneel down around the belly of the pig
Awesome Video. How often do you trim them?
We don’t have a set schedule we just check the pigs during feeding and trim when needed
If their hooves are cracked can you still trim? I have been putting hoof condition on her to help recently. Thanks in advance
We do we are just very careful. Dremmel tool would probably be a little better
Thank you. I live in rural AL and have been searching for a farrier for months. With the help of your video I’m going to attempt it myself. Itself getting pretty bad on her she’s almost a year old.
Our pig adores belly scratches, so I think one will clip while another does belly scratches... anything to stop the squealing!!
I tried to trim my kune kune and his hooves were too tough
May I have the link for the tool you guys are using?
Yes the link is down in the description
Beer bread helps
H what if their hooves look like fingers
What kind of Clippers? Looks like a pruning clipped.
They are goat hoof trimmers there is a link below in the description
Hello, my name is Saralynn. Please disregard the picture and name of my profile, as my11 year old must have thought changing it was 😂. Anyways, I instantly fell head over heels for your long-haired pigs. Please provide me information and I would love to have them on my farm! I subscribe to your channel and I’m so excited to watch all of your videos.
Thanks for following along! They are Kunekune pigs. We love them!
@@KCFarms love love! Are you breeding by chance?
Yes if you check out a couple of our latest videos you can see all of our spring litters
Is there any reason you couldn't dremel them? I used to be a dog groomer & by far most dogs are much more agreeable to dremel than clippers & it's a much better finish & less risk of quicking them.
Yes you could
Can I roll my pregnant pig like this? I took in a true and I don’t think they have ever had their hooves trimmed
Depending how far along they are I think you could. If they seem stressed you may want to wait till later. If they are close to their due date I probably wouldn’t.
What trimmers did you use when trimming the pigs hooves?
He mentioned it in the beginning of the video. I had to go back and listen to it to write it down. Amazon has them. He also posted the link for the trimmers. I seen nobody had answered your question.

I keep hearing about the order they can have. At what age do they start smelling??
The only time we smell an odor is when the males get excited
Stupid phone oder
How old are they when they usually need their first trim?
It’s different for each pig
Walter was unhappy because the other hogs were sniffing at his private parts. Probably worried he would get bitten back there.
At what age do you start trimming their hooves?
We start once we notice they need it there isn’t really a normal age to start. It’s easier to roll them the younger they are so it’s nice to get them used to it
OMG... I only have one pig and not even sure if I could do my pig... she almost a year old and a Duroc... she's a hot mess... lol
Where did you get your houses
TSC but they have doubled in price🙁
I have to trim our pigs but they're 400lbs.
You could do it get someone to help hold the back legs once you roll them
What tools did u use?
I'm fixn to trim my mini pigs hooves on my own. The vet wants too damn much just for me to bring her in an they want to sedate her just to trim her hooves.
I totally get it. You can do it gets easier everytime
How would you trim hoofs front and back by yourself?
Same thing you just have to turn around and grab the back legs . Little more difficult but can be done
you picked a smaller pig to do, how about one of your big sows? Not so easy....
We do them all the same
Are these poor pigs pets or for meat?
There has to be a better way that’s sad. It’s very stressful for the animal.
Have you ever considered not eating those animals who trust you? It takes 10+ years off their natural life span and now the largest Nutritional board in the world (who all our nutritional info comes from) say we can live healthily vegan so meat is entirely an optional choice. We can therefore choose whether or not to be cruel by killing and ezploiting animals needlessly.
Boodro not down for the nonsense
😂
This poor Pig this looks so freaking traumatizing for the piggy who'd want to do that to their actual pet not me
I keep hearing about a smell but have not ever smelled it.
Where did you purchase your clippers??
We get ours off of Amazon. We have a link down in the description of the video
