I almost gave up railway modeling because of the cost. Then I found your videos. Now I am modeling, I have become a hoarder of anything I can use for modeling and once again enjoying the hobby. Thank you
Awesome stuff! :-D This has given me a flashback. Do you remember when every year or so, a model railway magazine would do a segment called something like: "build a model railway layout for £100!" And the the builders would do things like, buy a pack of 5 tress for £20, but only use 2, then say "I've only used 2 trees so that only £8 spent". They did this where ever they could. They would end up spending closer to £250 or even £300! This really got on my nerves!!! Then one day I saw this segment that really did build a layout for £100. Including loco and stock! My 12 year old mind was blown!! :-D
I thought I was restricted in space with my N scale layout which is 6’x3’ ! The Maxime of keep it simple was never so true with this layout,it offers fun,a bit of escapism which is what all model railway modellers want. A truly great, great layout and honestly makes me think I should blow mine up and go back to basics again! Thank you!
I think this size of layout would be perfect for getting your child or grandchildren interested in the hobby and you could build it together how nice would that be ☺️ Paul
You've cracked it there Mike I can't really see how that could be improved with the constraints that you have set yourself, the coaches look the part too I like the "Apple Green and Custard" paintwork, very stylish.
Mike and Douglas, Another great layout build. This layout is deffinately a great example of what can be accomplished with minimal time and a few bits and bobs. Without a great outlay of funds or time. Guys NOT to become a nitpicker. I do see something missing. A boy and his dog standing on the hill in the shade watching the trains run by. A few Towne folk or workers ( 3 to 4 )would'nt hurt. All the best at the show and Take care.
I think the boy’s mother yelled for him to come home because his cousin from America was about to pour ketchup on haggis and eat it. The townspeople wanted to see that too!
Just goes to show that you can have fun with a small layout. This one looks really good and makes me want to do a micro. Big fan of the coaches and the colour scheme. Great work, Clint
Thank you. I was thinking about building a test track to service my trains that have been sat in the sed and to test electronic prototypes (I am an electronic engineer) and now I find I have been doing resurch on the S&DJR railway in order to create layouts on one sheet of 2X4 foot ply (or what ever the stupid metric measurments are in the UK at present!

@@gregpotter6957 Just find it sad really as thanks to Mike and Doug they have shown me loads through their videos.I am returning to this great interest after a 40 year break,i nearly was put off by a video by someone else on here,it started off ok...but he reckoned he needed to spend over £10.000 to build a layout.I havent that sort of money to spend, but these videos have shown me you dont need to spend big to enjoy making trains run.
He was just showing off, you hear them at exhibitions, its not about how much you spent its about how much fun you had, the two are usually in inverse proportion, the less you spend and the more you make yourself the more fun you have.
"Not a real model railway?" Of course it is! The problem with some people is that they are infected by an overblown sense of their own intellect! You've done a great job, Mike!
Great to see you do things out of the norm. When I did shows with our layout some 25 years ago we had a guy who built a layout n gauge on a wooden tea tray, another that was made 009 on a metal morning board in winter which was really good. So you don't need the biggest or fanciest so long as you enjoy what you have. Take care Rob yes I'm wrinkly railway man now,
Brilliant work and a nice little layout. Interested which railway would run the slug green livery lol. I like it. The definition of a model railway must have changed since I was a kid - always thought it was one or more locos running around a loop and /or sidings!
Really imaginative for such a small but very interesting layout. Well done. As for me? I am a high speed trains freak, into stations and tunnels! Some people never grow up!!!
Truly wonderful! I reckon if you added a few more details in the goods yard and to the station, the layout would look really really amazing. I love those coaches too. You guys never cease to amaze me with what you achieve in a small place. I have just moved to a new flat so I need all the space I can get, you guys are really giving me some great ideas. 😁
This reminds me of the Pallot Steam Museum on Jersey, whose line (when I visited) consisted of a tight oval of track with a station and 0-4-0 locomotive hauling short Victorian coaches. So not only is this definitely a model railway, it's actually pretty close to a real life heritage line. Actually, when I saw those coaches, I did think they look like exactly the sort of thing a heritage railway might build using a wagon chassis.
This is soo cute! I'm now building my layout just like this but hadding a bit of a Thomas the Tank Engine style to it :D Oh an idea, for the channel: a Thomas the Tank Engine based model railway :)
great job guys, looks great, love your freelance coaches,,along with the 040 loco these coaches would look great on a freelance light railway, maybe with a steampunk feel.jpj
I love this, going to do (eventually) something on a similar layout but building upwards , trains only visible via a valley with a tunnel each end with a hinged hidden purspex access hatch built in the side of scenery to deal with derailments and loco positioning . That way I can use the siding to switch points and swap the engine remotely to make it look like a background mainline, the railway being a side feature of the main diorama..will it happen probably not any time soon when it does I'll show the results! Awesome videos guys!
I think this really does highlight that anyone can have an 00 gauge layout. Who needs 009? Ha! Great work showing what can be done with limited space and money.
PS. Sadly as its neither DCC or a perfect recreation of an actual railway its unlikely that any of the magazines would cover it, they are only interested in innovation when its hi TEC and expensive.
This gives me inspiration to build something small like this, albeit a little longer, and only one siding. My problem will be the flexitrack, and my lack of patience. Will a Terrier go round at a push?
Hi. A terrier wouldn't go round mine, in fact to my surprise it wouldn't go round my 13in radius curves either.1st radius seems it's limit? Newer locos even 0-6-0s won't even go round 1st radius, it's a retrograde step
Very nice! Btw, the western side of Pulborough is still largely undeveloped: it might make a good home for the lbsc model and an outreach extension of Amberley. Where I ought to go to again . . . Best wishes, John
Have you ever considered 3d printing wagon and coach chassis, I love the coaches but don't have chassis laying around, if I could buy both and just add wheels I definitely would
Sorry I meant fingers crossed for luck. OK the smallest easy layout is to use 1st radius set track, this would approx 90cm by 1mtr as its 75cm radius circle. Flexible track would enable you to go much smaller than this down to approx 50cm but it is more fiddly to do, but we have a video in this series how to do it. If you look at our more recent videos I have built one a bit smaller using very old set track but that is hard to find. Anything we can do to help please just ask us

@@BudgetModelRailways From my angle it just looked like they were robbing you of about half inch which seemed to be as about as much as the engine was overhanging. I do like those coaches too.
By making a hole in the backdrop and adding another switch and a piece of rail going through the backdrop you could have a one track fiddle yard which would greatly improve your operation ability without adding much cost.
