Amtrak, our National Passenger Railway here in the US, had an advertising slogan - there's something about a train that's magic. Few things these days bring such universal enjoyment to all age groups like watching model trains running around. I have a Rohukan Z Scale Layout in a box that's less than a square foot and watching the little tram running around its loop is such a treat.
Even watching videos of trains running around is therapeutic! I'm very impressed by your people. They're not statues. They're doing stuff. The only worry I have is how that Morris Minor will make it over the level crossing.
You’re hardly sad my friend. There must be thousands of people who enjoy watching models such as yours running round layouts like yours. Keep on trucking, or steaming as they say, lol.
You're right Model Railroading is very theraputic. Whenever I am stress - I go run my trains for 20-40 mins and I feel better afterwards. Love your collection.
I love my steam and diesel locomotives both equally. I bought a Lima class 33 in BR green a couple of days ago and it runs brilliantly. Great video guys.
Just a quick note about the Lima 94xx - my one I got for free, had it for a few years and it never ran. Last year I decided to restore it to working order and stripped it right down, and they're not the most complicated things to strip, cleaned up all the contacts and resoldered all the joints, rebuilt it (repaint while I was at it as it was tatty) and now it runs essentially silently and extremely smoothly. If you get the time, it is well worth considering doing either yourself or by getting someone else to do it
A shame the Triang Princess is in poor condition. Can't wait to see you repair it. And tbh, I think that Great Western tender works really well with it. For modelling you could say it got it during the 1948 Exchange Trials, like how a Bulleid Pacific got a Stanier tender. Last year, for my birthday, I bought one on eBay from a seller who said they were selling the collection of a collector who passed away. Mine is in good condition (haven't had a chance to run it yet, so hopefully it works), and was painted at one point to have red wheels. It also has a knuckle coupler on the rear, which was interesting to see. I'm very glad I bought it in any case.
Super video you two but you did it again 3 in one oil, you know how it upsets them,I'm surprised you haven't been inundated with shock horror bleaters. Great to see it coming along, can't wait to see it completely finished. Frank
A nice interesting video as always, you are right there is something nice and relaxing about watching a train run round a layout.Ive seen someone say on here that it makes you forget about the problems of modern life ;)
It's not too long since you could buy Bachmann Prairies for £35 - new! Most of my purchases were 2002 -2012, when street prices were typically £35 - £69 (the latter for an A1 Pacific), with £45 - £50 being the discounted price of the latest releases. From that time I've averaged about one new loco a year. It's sobering to see the asking price of new models.
Your small OO gauge layout shows you can get a lot for a little. Bigger is not always better. One thing I seem to notice is that the OO gauge locos seem to be less costly than the N gauge locos. The cheapest N gauge loco that I have been able to buy is a Hornby Minitrix 2-6-0 in BR black for around $54.00 including postage. At least I have been able to obtain buy and download cardstock models cheaply. Your videos have been great inspiration for my growing British N gauge layout.
Nice,my dapol Scots Guardsman that I got recently with 2 double bogey coaches for £10 (and some other model railway stuff) is a bit loud too! Great vid I really like the locos you used this session! Keep it up man! -Dj
I bought a 40npound job lot a few years back and one of the locks was a princess Elizabeth in dark green which is like br green or gwr green.(I am not sure)
Hey guys, I have been trying to source some large corro like you guys use for your platforms, for my daughter's trainset. I have a vague recollection you said in another video you got it from white goods packaging. I have been to my local Curry's and local kitchen fitter but none of them have that type of cardboard packaging. Please can you advise what the corro you get is the packaging for? Or point me to the video where you do tell us? Thank you.
@@BudgetModelRailways - thank you. I was hoping that packing was readily available. Ha-ha! I have plenty of cereal packets saved up having been following your vids for a short while now, so can use that approach. Thanks again!
How on earth that first Airfix prairie ended up with classic Fleischmann couplers? Does that one have some exposed gears? You can try to put some blobs of RC car grease on the gears and let it spread inside the gearbox A good tip for non-running Lima pancake motors: sometimes the magnet swells until the rotor gets stuck. You can try replacing it with a CD-rom motor, which can be as silent as a reasonably modern loco. Just take care with the voltage
The hornby saddle tank 0-4-0s are great awhile back you could get a brand newish unused hornby 2014 collectors club for 15 quid I got one painted up The figures and made it a makeshift tender and it looks lovely
Some nice locos there... oh, and who left their phone on whilst recording... tut, tut lol ;) I bought a nice Princess class recently for £12... Mind you, I haven't tested it yet, but it harks back to when we had one as kids that we inherited from my uncles.
@@BudgetModelRailways I was talking about the electronic beeping, which is phone interferance. When we were doing commercial video I became paranoid about switiching phones off lol. I have a couple of old locos and Triang coaches, which I have picked up as part of job lots, including one of the Caledonian Railways locos. I have to repair the roof, but it is the best running loco so far. It's superb. I am giving that loco to the grandchildren when I build their layout. Looking forward to seeing you run your SNCF diesel one day, as I had that set as a kid. Love what you are doing. It's such an inspiration for people like me, as I am perpetually skint and am no longer dextrous due to Primary Progressive MS. I have lack of motivation or patience for drawn out projects... I am also inherantly lazy lol. You prove time and time again that a great little railway can be achieved cheaply and quickly.
You are 100% correct when you say just sitting watching trains run around a layout no matter its size is very therapeutic. Cheers Greg

Therapeutic ?
ℹ find the sound of the electric motors, as well as the click of little wheels over scale track strangely soothing
Agreed

I can’t believe those big locos run around those curves! Awesome ☺️
I was a bit surprised myself
The layout is coming along nicely
You're right Model Railroading is very theraputic. Whenever I am stress - I go run my trains for 20-40 mins and I feel better afterwards. Love your collection.

Great little layout, Mike! Those small steamers look right at home there!

The layout's looking great and the loco's set it off a treat look forward to the next instalment.
Thanks
Enjoyed watching some great looking Loco’s on a really nice layout!👍😊
Good to see you still going mate.
Can't get enough of your videos, man. I love it.
Thanks

Mine is in pristine condition and runs great so I will leave it alone for the moment. But yes the green one will need that treatment at some point

I plan to fix it up, but its rather down the list of priorities. Good luck with yours

Happy locos steamin around :D love it😁😍
you have some very nice steamers. tight corves and they do ok. very nice look on the layout.
triang forever.....brilliant video....nice to see...ade
Thanks, triang rules

Well said
Loving the layout it looks really nice
Thanks
Awesome guys 🤙🏻
I agree about the Prairies. All the great western locos look great
I'm trying to get an airfix large prairie in gwr green, but all too pricey
@@BudgetModelRailways they are not as good runners the air fixed prairies and very noisy

Second hand is not much better now
Thanks might attempt if I can get materials got a temporary circle for running in
I've got that standard four, it's a really good runner for it's age. I've also got the CR pug, and mine's a bit of a rocket!
The older ones were, only the newer ones have been re geared
Modelrailroading period,is therapeutic!!.........
So true

That was a real bargain, well done
Lol watching trains going round and round yep im guilty , mine 6X2 in n scale 2 main lines and 4 switches ,couldn't be happier 😊😊😊😊😊
You should add a middle concrete looking section to the level crossing in between the tracks
Its planned, the layout still has a lot of detail work to be done
@@BudgetModelRailways great. The layout looks amazing.
Thanks
I like this layout. Has a lot of things going on for its size. A little 04 diesel shunter would be perfect for it.
Thanks thats my plan
I never gave my poor little Caledonian Railway 040 enough credit when I was a kid. Wishing now I'd kept it. :(
I bought a 40npound job lot a few years back and one of the locks was a princess Elizabeth in dark green which is like br green or gwr green.(I am not sure)
very nice, maybe a bit of a restoration project in the Princess? Even spruce up the detailing?
A paint job certainly. Its also missing half a front buffer beam and a bit of the top of the tender

Hi, it just came from various packaging, the last lot was from a freezer our neighbour had delivered.
You can make platforms from ordinary card, even cereal packets by making a grid of verticals with a flat piece on the top
@@BudgetModelRailways - thank you. I was hoping that packing was readily available. Ha-ha!
I have plenty of cereal packets saved up having been following your vids for a short while now, so can use that approach. Thanks again!
If you make a vertical grid say approx 15mm high then put a top on that should be fine.
@@BudgetModelRailways - Sweet, I'll use that as my guide. Thank you. I'll post a photo once started.

When Airfix first entered the market all their models had narrow Fleischmann style tension lock couplings.
The hornby saddle tank 0-4-0s are great awhile back you could get a brand newish unused hornby 2014 collectors club for 15 quid I got one painted up The figures and made it a makeshift tender and it looks lovely
2-6-2 s were the most common where i grew up in the Wirral in 50s and 60s - coal and passengers;
Enjoyed. Waiting for the Diesels
Should be next Friday
Love this layout wish I had the skills to build it
It's not that difficult, I am pretty much self taught from trial and error
I enjoyed that
That tenderloco looks like a LMS Ivatt Standard 4MT
Tri ang Princesses not run on flex track because of the flanges on the wheel just through I would say
Depends, its OK on code 100 but not 75, it doesn't like some points but doesn't seem to mind mine

We think it might have been the motor on the old airfix loco, lol. Lots of people seem to have fond memories of those old triang locos

What happened to the Flying Scotsman?
Its running nicely thanks, Wilkinson try and give it a run now the loft layout is coming along.
The Princess you have you don’t The right tender that’s a great Western tender not LMS
I did say that it was the wrong one, fortunately we don't worry or care about that sort of thing so no worries
You proove the engine doesn't haft to be new to run well
