I absolutely love that industrial area, the cramped feeling with the buildings towering over the trains is really effective, especially with the buildings scratch built to fit the site (as they were in real life, of course). The whole thing reminds me of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.
When a loved one passes a time to gather your thoughts and emotions is (I think) essential and our hobby gives us time to do that, condolences to you and yours. The layout is coming on a treat so much on a compact layout!

I wish I had your commitment Mike - your layouts are inspirational and every time I say 'I'll have a go at that' I realise how limited my space is and I struggle to fit a round and round layout in OO gauge on a desktop. Time to go and inspect my space yet again now you've shown yet another way - thank you😎
I think a desk should be fine, this is only 20x36 so a desk would be a bit bigger. My best advice is just do it, keep the track plan simple, a loop and a couple of sidings, only needs two wires with DC, and have fun.

I am so sorry to hear about your Mum. I lost my Mum a few years ago on the 27th December. It would have been Mum and Dad's anniversary. It is a very hard time any time of the year but more so at Christmas. My thoughts are with you and your wife. God bless, keep modeling.
So sad to hear the news mate. Lost my mother in law in July and you are so right about the therapeutic aspect. Funnily enough, it is the 41st anniversary of my dad’s passing today, and I am largely into model railways (and railways in general) because of him. I actually had had a lovely afternoon laying some second half track on my glorified outdoor test track garden railway while my good lady was out walking with her friend. It really helped me, not so much by distracting me, but by reminding me of my excitement at laying my first bit of track with him on my very first layout, a piece of flexi that curved into a lovely Superquick country terminus! Of course, he actually DID it all, but 5 year old Timmy was very excited! 😁 Sadly I lost my dad because of his struggles with mental illness so thank you for your lovely little heads up about the importance of supporting those that need it ❤️🍀👍 And finally: oh my goodness! How bloody brilliant has this layout turned out to be? 😎 the factory is definitely your best build thus far (even better than that harbour station with the roof!) and it all just fits perfectly! Well done mate 🌟🌟🌟
My dad, who passed away 20 years ago, got me into military modelling as he finished with railways when I was little, he would have lived seeing me and Doug making railways. I'm really enjoying this layout, more buildings planned. Thanks for the kind comment
Love your scratchbuilt buildings, especially the BMR office and factory. The corrugated boilerhouse roof looks just like the weathered asbestos roof on our 1950's built concrete garage. Great stuff and very inspiring. I agree with your comments on Ebay prices. People have been asking silly money for secondhand stuff in the past few months. It's easy to assume that if you are buying "preowned" stuff you are going to get a bargain (the term amuses me... here you are, I've owned that a bit for you). You can often get better prices from well-known online retailers. I recently returned to railway modelling after a thirty-odd year break where life got in the way and was amazed by the quality and variety of stuff now available, but horrified by the prices. Now a pensioner I can't afford a couple of hundred quid for a new loco so most of my collection has been thoughfully pre-owned by others :)

Incredible so much in such a small area just wonderful. 2018 for us grim Father in law April out of the blue, my mother the day b4 we buried Father in law and mum in law four months later. My railway our family grandchildren saved my mind. So understand where you're coming from. Love this layout well done. Take care

I took a trip down to the small town I grew up in and took some good pictures of the house I lived in from second grade until I moved away at age 19. I plan to build a model of it and put in on a farm on my layout. I will FINALLY get that pony I always wanted as a child! :)

Love what you've done. I do enjoy a 360 degrees view to any layout. You can always find something to focus on when the train goes around the layout.
