It is remarkable to watch Derren in interviews. That laser sharp focus. His mind seems to be switched fully on all the time. That ability to focus and flow whilst still being very precise in what he says is phenomenal.
"To be happy all the time" one would have to be mentally disturbed. To be "content" with all arising situations is a more realistic goal. Good advice Derren-love all your stuff.
timwins31 thank you so much for your message! I've been seeing a counsellor for over a year now seen a few psychiatrists and doctors. Also had very strong suicidal thoughts in the past and almost acted on them twice. I've been on venlafaxine for a few years now and I find it helps in taking away the worst, most painful feelings but it also seems to suck any pleasure or happiness out of life. Which means it's very difficult to motivate myself and I'm constantly thinking about what I need to do to make myself happy. So recently I have started to try to look at myself at a more fundamental level and I realise how much I try to look for some external source of happiness and my mind is really just unfocused and bouncing around like a pinball machine. I will definitely give Derren's book a try now after what you've said! I was already a fan of him too, I think he's an amazing illusionist and skeptical thinker. I think I came on this video because I was searching to see whether he had anything hypnosis and removing mental negativity. Thanks so much for the recommendation, and I'm so glad that things are going better for you now! I hope it stays with you and keeps going :)
Andrew MacDonald really? And why's that? Other than tacking my political persuasion onto a generic insult. You're the one who's tried to justify a monstrous period of suffering in human history. I hardly think that makes *me* everything that's wrong with the world.
I am happy when I am productive, thriving, successful, have good friends and a good support system. I am happy when people are nice. I get stalked all the time. I do not appreciate being the infamous unfamous because I died for a man with a tin heart and fell for dream traps and rap traps and the best illusionist of all. I love you Derren. I wish I could live for my goals and dreams and not have people actively try to kill my spirit, hope, goals and dreams.
meaning and happiness... or happiness as a byproduct of meaning... starts from the premise that there has to be meaning; meaning can only be associated with doing so... there has to be doing first= no doing, no meaning, no happiness. That is a rather limited and superficial view for various reasons: it ignores the fact that meanings change in time [people are moody; meanings change with age] and happiness therefore is not constant- it comes and goes and it needs variation [e.g. you cannot eat only ice cream for the rest of your life or even once in large quantities] therefore happiness seems to be a restless search for meanings/bamboozle oneself in making up meanings for things, in a vicious circle. How can one build on something that is not stable?! Happiness is not meaning conditioned as it is not conditioned by doing and does not reside in outside objects. Nothing that comes and goes can be real.
what is real cannot be relative to/depending on something external. The observer itself is the one to which all that comes and goes reports [there is no coming and going in the absence of the observer]. So, yes, the impersonal/devoid of any interest [and therefore judgment] witness/observer of that which comes and goes is never changing and therefore the only reality. You may call this consciousness or awareness.
There are different ways to look at 'it'. I agree with your proposal- let's get rid of the concept, but why only of that of happiness, why not of all of them?! Each concept contains in itself its opposite- bad can only be known in relation to good, ugly to beauty, peace to unrest, happiness to unhappiness. Once all are gone, what remains? On the other hand, see, everyone lives in search of... 'it' [okay, you don't like the word happiness but it's just a convention that is limited to the meaning you give it]. Whether playing guitar, fishing, playing sports, philozophizing... even getting drunk or committing petty thefts are activities that people believe would make them happy. What they all have in common is that they are based on belief [what makes you happy, another may have no interest in pursuing because their belief is different] and are time bound- they appeared at one point in time and they necessarily must go [as I said previously- you cannot eat ice cream forever, or too much at one time because you get bored and sick- replace that with playing guitar if you want]. Seeking temporary happiness in these fleeting experiences and believing that this is all life is about, is a limited view of reality. You say "whether its "real" is irrelevant, anything can be considered real by the person experiencing it" Agreed- reality cannot be person dependent; that is fantasy. "It" however, that which all are seeking [how about calling it 'peace' as all desires fulfilled result in peace- of mind] cannot be found through the mind, as an object 'out there'. That peace is beyond mind and comes to the foreground when the mind stops following thoughts, dissecting and analyzing, making judgments and labeling. "It" is the background upon which all else transits; yes, it is only now but not time bound; it is the eternal, impersonal awareness, available to anyone unconditionally and independent of the individual will. It reveals itself with the disappearance of the person [of the thought "I' to which all else is linked]. When "I" goes, the universe goes with it and only "what is" remains- existence/being, and you become that [in fact you never were anything else].
guys, the dog analogy is not relvant to humnans as they are suporeted and dependent on your help. Many humans are not so can;t be like dogs. Further, no animal uses money, we do. Take out money and we would be far bette roff. Really, guys, the analogy of a dogs happoiness is really not relevant in comparison. Respec to Derreen for acknowledging this. Have a look at the work of Tim Rayner, who is a stoic advocate, too.
Christianity completely misunderstood. We live in a fallen world, we are sinners who are going to die ('the wages of sin is death') yet Christ DIED IN OUR PLACE already so that we may not die but have eternal life. Yes, Jesus said that his kingdom is 'not of this world' - nothing surprising about that. Shame DB doesn't read some good theology as well - The Book of Concord wouldn't go amiss.
Who's the interviewer? Thanks
Michael Shermer
He's a smug twat.

It’s not cool 😎 but it makes me think

let's crowdfund a mic for derren

We heard him tho 😊 that's the main thing
Impressive that you decorated both rooms to match.
It almost looks like they're in the same room!
This should be taught in schools from the beginning
Andrew MacDonald perhaps but age would have to be taken into account
We need more people like Derren on our Plane-T
and less flat earthers
surfinmuso the earth is flat cuz when you go on another planet and walk a full 360 degrees around, you fall into the water and drown

Both are awesome!

Content with all situations?? That’s not a human thing to be
As someone suffering terribly from depression, this is extremely helpful.

Quite the interesting interview. Thanks.
